This historic building sits on one of Chico’s busiest thoroughfares, with no easy access. To reach the building while traveling south on The Esplanade, a vehicle must turn left either onto East Second Avenue, three blocks north of the building, or East Frances Willard Avenue, three blocks south. The vehicle must then pass through a historic R-1 residential neighborhood. It is obvious that the traffic impact to this residential and historic neighborhood will be considerable.

The county should not sign a contract for an occupant for this 18,000-square-foot building with nine parking spaces. The city should resolve the traffic-circulation and parking problems or insist on a use that will not exacerbate the neighborhood’s significant issues with traffic. The poor planning of the past that left this historic building without off-street parking is a warning not to perpetuate bad planning.

When the traffic circulation issues and the infrastructure improvements to the streets, sidewalks and crosswalks are completed, then perhaps the county could consider a tenant for the building. Ω

Was it right?

Let’s remember the cost of the war: more than 4,400 Americans killed, tens of thousands injured, many grievously. At least 100,000 Iraqis dead and more than 4 million displaced. More than $3 trillion in American treasure spent, according to Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz.

Many Iraqis today say life is better. Much depends on where they live.

If it’s the almost exclusively Shiite south or the Kurdish north, life is peaceful and prosperous. But if it’s a region where Shiites and Sunnis are in conflict, such as Baghdad, car bombings and other forms of violence are common, and life is still defined by bloodshed and fear.

Iraq has the trappings of democracy, but that’s all. In fact, Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is doing all he can, including arbitrary detention of opponents, to centralize power and keep Iraqi Sunnis from having influence. Some people say he’s hardly better than Saddam Hussein.

Was it worth it for the United States? In The war, which was the long run, no. “Almost everything the U.S. did in Iraq was a disaster,” beginning with basing the invasion on a fear of non-existent weapons of mass destruction and going in without a plan or even minimal understanding of Iraqi culture.

This incompetence led directly to the Sunni-Shiite conflict that plunged the country into civil war in 2006—and now threatens to do so again. And, when photos of torture at Abu Ghraib prison came out, they destroyed the image of the United States as a nation built on humanitarian principles, not immoral coercion.

Meanwhile, Shiite dominance of the Iraqi government and its increasingly close ties to Iran have helped foster that nation’s rise as a power in the Middle East, which was exactly what U.S. leaders did not want to happen there.

Was it worth it? That’s largely up to the Iraqis, and only history will tell.

Was it right? Absolutely not. Ω

A welcome option Elsewhere in this issue (see Downstroke, page 8) we report

that Chico soon will have a second television news purveyor. Reddingbased KRCR’s owners recently purchased the FOX20 studio in Chico and, according to reliable sources, plan soon to launch a Chicocentric news show that will compete with the Action News team on Channels 12 and 24.

Most readers will remember that for many years those two stations were separate and competitive. Then they merged, and so did the news teams.

This was good for the stations’ bottom lines, but it was bad for Chico. The spark of competition that had spurred two stations to try to outdo each other was gone.

Local television news programs, like daily newspapers, have been struggling of late. People increasingly get their daily news via the Internet.

That’s why KRCR’s decision to do a Chico news show is welcome. A good local news broadcast offers a package of stories and information in a cohesive and visually attractive way that can’t be found on the Internet.

Our hope is that this new competition will spark greater viewer interest in what both TV news teams are doing, foster sharper reporting and editing and, ultimately, enhance the Chico public’s awareness of the issues, events and people that are important to the community. Ω

Rogues’ gallery Our state senator, Jim Nielsen, isn’t the only elected official accused of not living in his district. Add state Assemblyman Richard Pan to the list, which also includes Los Angeles-area state Sen. Rod Wright and L.A. Councilman Richard Alarcón.

Credit Sacramento Bee reporter Jim Sanders with busting Pan. For several nights Sanders hung out in front of the Pocket-area condo Pan had sworn he lived in, under penalty of perjury, so he could run in the 9th Assembly District. Sanders saw no signs of occupancy there. When he camped in front of Pan’s Natomas home, outside the district, he saw Pan and his family there every night. Oops.

The result was the biggest front-page story in the Wednesday, March 13, issue of the Bee. It was headlined, in inch-high type, “Lawmaker seldom at ‘home.’”

Sanders’ piece also called attention to the cases of Wright and Alarcón, both of whom are facing criminal charges. He made no mention, however, of Nielsen.

Two days later, the Bee’s editorial board jumped into action, calling on Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully to launch an investigation. “The available information suggests that Pan is, at the very least, skirting the law by keeping his real residence in Natomas,” the editorial reads.

I hope the Bee has better luck than we’ve had. On several occasions the CN&R has called on Tehama County DA Gregg Cohen to look into Nielsen’s claim that he lives in a doublewide mobile home in Gerber cow country, rather than the expensive house in Woodland, outside his district, that he actually resides in.

After all, Nielsen is the biggest rogue in this particular gallery. The others have fibbed about their residences only once, but he’s done it twice—and, apparently, gotten away with it both times.

Funny story: Jerry Olenyn did a nifty piece for Redding’s KRCR-TV news about my impending retirement, announced here last week. But when my wife went online to watch it and typed my name in the search box, the story that came up, from about a year ago, was headlined “Sex Offender Arrested for Urinating in Front of Civic Auditorium.”

It seems that 45-year-old Robert Speer, who is from Ceres, in the San Joaquin Valley, was really drunk when police officers found him. They arrested him on an outstanding warrant, failing to register as a sex offender, urinating in public and public intoxication. It wasn’t clear whether he’d attended the auditorium show by the rock band Five Finger Death Punch.

For whatever reason, KRCR posted that story but not Jerry’s profile of me. I’m enjoying the dose of humility.

Mind opener of the week: If you have a stereotyped notion of mentally ill homeless people, this week’s cover story will challenge it. Author Don Regis-Bilar is mentally ill, and he’s homeless as a result, but he’s also a smart man— and a heck of a writer—who defies anyone’s stereotype.

His story offers valuable insight into the world the homeless inhabit as seen by someone who’s been there. We’re pleased and proud to present it.

Re “Notes from a gun nut” (Cover story, by Jaime O’Neill, March 14): When I began reading this article, I thought it was going to be a fairly objective piece, which would be a refreshing change from the usual left-leaning material commonly found in these pages. Of course it was not to be. It quickly degenerated into the predictable tripe about gun owners in general being fat paranoid drunks who carry a lot of “free-floating anger.” Really? How do you arrive at such a conclusion?

And where did you come up with that list of “Cold, hard gun facts”? Are they simply “facts” because you say they are? Exactly who “predicted” that by 2015 gun deaths will exceed auto deaths? Just because something conveniently supports your position doesn’t make it true.

Finally, with regard to your concerns about alcohol being served at this event, I hope you are equally concerned with any restaurant that serves alcohol. Every restaurant patron who chooses to drink is going to leave that restaurant by getting behind the wheel of a deadly weapon. Hopefully they’re not wearing camo.

Jaime O’Neill missed one bit of data in his story: the fact that according to the Department of Justice (really easy to look up), Americans use guns in self-defense 2.5 million times per year. I’m not citing the Kleck study. I’m citing the DOJ. What would happen 2.5 million times per year if law-abiding citizens were to lose their right to keep and bear arms? Lose countless wallets? Cars? Lives? Good thing we will never find out.

For a liberal paper that even as a conservative I enjoy, I was surprised by this story, which seemed pro gun. As usual, and typical of liberals, the end of the story (“Cold, hard gun facts”) used statistics he must have made up to scare people.

The lies start with a prediction (a prediction is a hard fact?) that gun deaths in 2015 (average deaths from all guns is about 8,500 per year) will surpass automobile deaths (32,310 in 2011) by 2015. Really?

I don’t have to even look at his other indisputable cold hard gun facts to know I don’t need to look at his other made-up claims. I would be embarrassed to publish this pack of lies. Guns need to be kept from unstable people. Guns are for stable Americans to protect themselves and to have fun shooting. Please turn your guns in, Jaime!

Editor’s response to Mr. Stuermer: The 6.6 million figure is an estimate that comes from the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, founded by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. It has been cited in numerous cases, and there is general consensus that it is reasonably accurate, but nobody knows for sure because of a lack of data. According to The Washington Post’s “The Fact Checker” site, that shortage of data is because “foes of gun control have thwarted extensive research on guns.”

According to the site dosome thing.org’s “11 Facts About Guns,” close to 33,000 Americans were victims of gun-related deaths in 2011, about the same as the number of auto deaths. The number may already exceed the number of auto deaths.

About the claims that “more than a million Americans have died of gun violence since 1968” and that all U.S. war deaths don’t equal gun deaths since 1960: According to the Pulitzer Prizewinning fact-checking site Politifact, the number of deaths caused by guns—homicides, suicides and accidents—from 1968 through 2011 is 1,384,171; the total number of deaths in all U.S. wars is 1,171,177.

For Mr. Chinchay: Our Internet search found no DOJ figures regarding defensive gun use, nor, in fact, any consensus on what constitutes DGU. Estimates ranged from Mr. Kleck’s 2.5 million, now largely debunked, to Bureau of Justice Statistics numbers indicating that, each year from 1987 to 1992, about 62,200 victims of violent crimes used guns to defend themselves, while another 20,000 annually used guns to protect property.

Feeling the pain Re: “It’s union vs. union” (Newslines, by Ken Smith, March 14): It is not only a financial burden for Butte County employees, who now have to pay all of their retirement contribution benefits and absorb rising costs of medical benefits, but it also has had a profound effect on the local economy.

If you take the average of the cuts to the take-home pay and multiply that by the total number of Butte County workers, it adds up to about a $15 million annual loss to the local economy.

One worker said she gave up her cable TV. I have made many cuts in local spending because I now have $300 a month less takehome pay. I don’t buy my morning coffee at Bidwell Perk anymore; I brew some at the office. I go to Pelican’s Roost restaurant only once a month now. Same thing for Sierra Nevada, which I used to frequent once a week.

What has the county done with the $15 million a year they save by not paying for employee benefits?

We see new shiny vehicles, many new employees, a new big solar project and remodeling projects going on as well as other empire building. Butte County workers as individuals certainly have already felt the pain of “sequestering,” but indeed so has the rest of the county.

Water rates going way up I received a notice in the mail about Cal Water raising their rates for customers. It said that “rates would increase the typical residential customer’s monthly bill by $9.37” in 2014.

I pay $32.86 a month. If my rate increased by $9.37 a month, I would pay an additional $112.44 a year (plus sewage), which adds up to $405.72 annually!

I am concerned about this rate increase.

Cal Water can increase rates in 2015 and 2016 without further notice to customers, and 2015 and 2016 rates may be higher, due to inflation.

Cal Water wants to increase the rate by about 38 percent in a threeyear period!

If Cal Water followed a five-year set plan, with only a 7.6 percent increase each year ($29.96), it wouldn’t be so hard for people to pay.

There will be a hearing at the

April 15 meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the Chico City Council chambers (421 Main St.).

I don’t think many residents know about this decision to raise the rates, nor do they know by how much. The public should know about this, and it should be published in all the local newspapers.

Parking-meter ‘money grab’ I have to park in downtown Chico as part of my job, and I am disgusted with the “parking war” going on every weekday. The city of Chico is conducting all-out war on parking-meter violators.

The city employs several people to walk the streets of downtown and inflict, sometimes with glee, $29 worth of misery on people trying to do business or shop. I guarantee there is a line item in the Chico budget for projected income from parking tickets.

Parking violations are easy money for cities, but in Chico it’s a “money grab.” If I came downtown to buy something and I got a $29 parking ticket, I would never come back. Simple as that.

Any time Chico really wants to do something to provide safety to citizens, how about enforcing the crosswalk laws, enforcing the stoplight laws and protecting the sidewalks? But that would require a peace officer, not a city employee on a power trip.

I am disappointed that I voted for all but two of the sitting council members. They appear to be incapable of recognizing that no data demonstrating that Nakamura’s plan for restructuring provides any useful benefit to the city of Chico.

The restructuring chart he showed to council was incomplete; the projected deficit information used to bolster the need for terminating city employees was out of date; the staff report the city manager was to prepare for council regarding the restructuring was incomplete; and still, council has not asked for actual numbers that show that the city is in the financial condition the city manager assures them it is.

As bad as Nakamura seems to be at managing the city, the City Council is even worse at making informed decisions.

What’s next? Is the city manager planning to also hire a friend of his to run the city’s engineering department? Will City Council continue to turn a blind eye?

Since I live alone in rural Tehama County, this precluded me from

To prolong embezzlement of interest from my settlement, the defendant’s insurance company’s been filibustering compensating me for my injuries for more than seven years now. This has caused me severe and increasing financial hardship and enormous legal fees.

Astonishingly, the insurer’s been doing this with the Tehama courts’ full knowledge and cooperation.

I’m an intelligent, responsible, clean-living person. If such injustices can happen to me, they could happen to anyone. For the sake of your readers and the country, I pray you’ll start publishing more pieces that explore the corrupt alliance between the insurance industry, the courts, and our local, state, and national governments. Citizens could then resist its continuing advancement. Such is precisely why our forefathers bestowed us freedom of the press.

Banks, insurers wary of fracking Re “Farmers getting fracked” (Guest comment, by Dave Garcia, March 14): Due to the 400-word limit I was unable to include [in my guest comment] vital farmer information involving the risk industries of insurance and banking saying no to fracking.

Rabobank, the world’s largest agricultural bank, no longer sells mortgages to farmers with gas leases. Nationwide Insurance, the seventh-largest company, is refusing to insure landowners whose land has been leased to lessees with fracking operations. The company determined that the exposures presented by fracking “are too great to ignore.”

Part of these industries’ concerns over fracking may be based on the oil industry’s own research, which reports a 6 percent well-casing failure rate on all wells drilled, with the Deepwater Horizon being the world-renowned example. The same reports state that after 30 years an average of 50 percent of well casings leak. No wonder insurance companies and banks are backing away from fracking operations.

NEW NEWS FOR CHICO

Looks like Chico is getting another nightly TV news broadcast, beginning sometime next week.

While no one wanted to go on the record, word is KRCR’s Channel 7 in Redding is putting together a Chico-based news team that will broadcast out of the FOX20 studios in downtown Chico during the 10 p.m. time slot. The two stations are both owned by Bonten Media Group and Esteem Broadcasting of Bristol, Va., which bought them last year.

Included on the FOX20 news team will be current KRCR correspondent Tyler May and veteran TV news reporter Jerry Olenyn, who occasionally writes for this paper. One other member of the team is Colin Steiner, who up until March 19 was a news reporter and board operator for KCHO radio.

STATE STINGS UNLICENSED CONTRACTORS

Six Butte County men were cited during a recent two-day sting operation in which state investigators teamed with the Butte County District Attorney’s Office looking for unlicensed contractors. Using a house in Chico, the investigators put out requests for jobs, including painting, landscaping, fence building and tree removal.

The suspects were contacted via ads in local papers, on Craigslist or business cards and fliers posted at local home-improvement stores. Those who responded and bid more than $500 for labor and materials were issued notices to appear for contracting without a license.

The six cited were Laslo Szontagh, 36, of Chico, who bid $1,200 for labor to paint the exterior of the house; Guillermo Serrano Tejas, 46, of Chico, who was cited for bidding more than $500 for landscaping services; 31year-old Juan Carlos Rodriguez, of Palermo, ditto; Andrew Louis Colenzo Jr., 52, of Paradise, who bid $1,300 to build a fence; Herod Fred Miller, 33, of Oroville, who offered to remove three to four trees for $850; Jeffrey Gerald Steels, 48, of Oroville, who bid $800 to $1,000 to paint the exterior of a residence. The men were cited for contracting without a license and illegal advertising, both misdemeanors.

CHICO MAN GETS GOVERNOR’S NOD

Gov. Jerry Brown has reappointed Chico’s John Lane to the State Mining and Geology Board, where he has served since 2009. Lane, 48, has owned and operated Chico Environmental Science and Planning LLP in downtown Chico since 2002.

He’s worked with the Butte County District Attorney’s Office on a number of environmental investigations and has led research expeditions of Chico State students to remote areas of the world, including Papua New Guinea and Borneo, where they’ve identified rare or even previously unknown insects, snakes and frogs.

Britton explained that maintaining Chico’s flora is a delicate balancing act involving environmental, fiscal and public-safety issues, and that the decisions are not hers alone to make.

Chico has a three-person Tree Committee—a subset of the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission—that has been working on the draft urban-forest plan for the last year. The committee has public meetings on the second Wednesday of each month; Britton expects the April meeting to be the committee’s final look at the draft before it’s passed to the BPPC and then City Council for approval.

In addition to the BPPC and city

staff, about a dozen community members who care about Chico’s trees regularly attend tree-committee meetings.

One of them is Kristina Schierenbeck, a Chico State biology professor, botanist and conservationist who has praise for Britton’s efforts.

“She’s doing a great job of balancing input from a lot of folks,” she said.

But Schierenbeck is also critical of the city’s tree-planting policies. Particularly, she is unhappy the city’s list of more than 50 approved trees includes fewer than 10 native species. She is also concerned that many of the species used to replace Chico’s aging and failed trees

won’t grow as tall. Schierenbeck said she hopes the new urban-forestry plan will address these concerns.

“The importance of planting native vegetation can’t be understated,” Schierenbeck said, “and I think it’s very important they be reminded that the General Plan speaks specifically to the importance of planting natives.

“The other thing is to not plant invasive species. I just want to encourage the city to stay the course of continuing to be a little more progressive about its planting practices.”

Schierenbeck said some trees the city plants—particularly Chinese pistache and London planetree—are dangerously invasive. The latter species, she said, can potentially hybridize native trees to extinction. She also stressed the positive aspects of planting native trees, such as assisting in pollination and bolstering the declining local bee population.

She pointed out that Chico’s natural habitat was riparian forest, like what is seen alongside Chico’s creeks—valley oaks, California sycamores and other large trees accompanied by a thick ground vegetation—and she would like to see Chico’s urban forest be an extension of that. This type of vegetation once dominated much of California’s landscape, and now less than 2 percent remains, she said.

As for size of the trees, Schierenbeck said many of the species on the city’s tree list are smaller ornamentals that are

about safety and availability of native plants, but said another challenge to Chico’s urban forest is even more difficult.

“The biggest issues we face are fiscal,” she said. “It’s a matter of funding and staffing just to maintain the existing trees. We have four people on our tree crew to maintain the 28,000 trees that we already have.”

She explained the staff does most of its work maintaining and pruning healthy trees from a lift truck with a 65-foot reach. Many of Chico’s older trees are in the 100- to 120-foot range, and the tree crew has to climb them to maintain them, which is more time-consuming and thus more costly.

Britton has instituted some programs to help offset costs. Since 2009, the city no longer plants new trees unless they are replacing old ones, and has moved to a citizen planting system. They are also exploring the possibility of selling wood from valuable trees they have to remove, such as black walnut. As it stands, treeremoval contactors get to keep the wood and sell it themselves.

Britton noted that, though somewhat smaller, many of the species are still fairly large.

“I think that in 50 years people will still be happy and proud if we have a 60foot canopy instead of an 80- to 100-foot canopy,” she said.

Schierenbeck isn’t so sure.

“It could end up looking like any other boring valley town,” she said. “I hate to imagine it, but it will look like Fresno.” Ω

Peaceful St. Patty’s Day Downtown brawl the exception on a calm holiday weekend hile there was some fear of a rowdy, W three-day St. Patrick’s Day weekend in Chico, the holiday turned out to be tamer

than usual, with the exception of a late-night brawl at a downtown bar.

Although St. Patrick’s Day fell on the Sunday of a weekend with beautiful weather, celebrants were better behaved than in recent years, according to the Chico Police Department.

“Thankfully Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 15 to 17, were very quiet,” said Chico Police Sgt. George Laver.

Whereas arrests for a typical St. Patrick’s Day range from 55-75, this year a police press release shows only 61 arrests for the entire weekend. Nor surprisingly, 27 were arrested on charges of being drunk in public.

The next-highest categories included 10 arrests for driving under the influence and nine for drug possession.

Laver could not pinpoint any single cause for the relatively peaceful holiday, but suggested that the timing of Chico State’s and Butte College’s spring break weeks, which started the Monday after St. Patrick’s, most likely played a role. Laver said many students left town earlier in the weekend, including Chico State freshmen, since the campus dormitories closed on Friday, March 15.

Of those arrested, seven were Chico State students, four were from Butte College, 34 were locals and 15 were from out of town.

Laver couldn’t say if the new “Respect Chico” campaign played a significant part.

Respect Chico is an educational program that encourages locals and visitors through window signs and a website, www.Respect Chico.org, to drink responsibly and respect

others and the city. It was launched by the owners of several downtown restaurants and bars in conjunction with the Chico Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Chico Business Association.

The one black mark on the weekend

was a massive fight outside of LaSalles Bar at 229 Broadway on Sunday evening. The brawl involved nearly 100 revelers and LaSalles employees, but resulted in no major injuries.

Laver said the melee started inside the bar around midnight when a bouncer escorted a 24-year-old woman outside for being disruptive and intoxicated. Brothers Barry and Steven Sayavong objected to the bouncer’s actions and confronted him, which Laver said prompted the violence.

A Chico police officer two blocks away saw three or four fights in progress and called for backup, said Laver. Soon thereafter, approximately 15 officers from the Chico Police Department, University Police and the Butte County Sheriff’s Office arrived and detained the instigators while keeping the others at bay.

Arrested at the scene were: Dominique Jamaica Nikita Duncansouriya, 24, on charges of being drunk in public and delaying or resisting arrest; Mary Jane Brown Valencia, 23, on a charge of battery; Steven Sayavong, 25, on charges of fighting and challenging to fight in public; and Barry Sayavong, 22, on a charge of battery.

“All you have to do is look at Main or Broadway streets to see what I mean,” she said. “Most of the big old trees are gone, and if there are any left their days are numbered.”

Schierenbeck said she understands some of the rational that leads to planting smaller, non-native trees. For one, the nursery industry is more focused on ornamentals, limiting the availability of natives. City planners would also need to provide larger planting strips in urban areas to accommodate the large trees’ root systems, and big trees also present public-safety issues, as upper limbs can fall unexpectedly.

“Sure, I don’t want my kid to be crushed by falling limbs,” she said.

“Nobody does. But we have to ask what the real risk of that happening is and what we’re willing to sacrifice because of that risk.

“If we’re serious about sustainability, the question is, what are we sustaining?

What we need to sustain is biological diversity, and that can’t be done by planting more crepe myrtles and Chinese pistaches.”

Barry Sayavong is the name of the man initially arrested in connection to the stabbing of former Chico State student body President Joseph Igbineweka in April 2010.

Originally charged with a hate crime and attempted murder, Sayavong, a Butte College student, was released from custody and the charges were dropped because of a lack of evidence (See “Rush to judgment,” CN&R April 12, 2012). Igbineweka’s assailant turned out to be Jorge Aguilar Ceja, who was linked to the crime through DNA evidence found on the knife used in the stabbing.

Laver likened the LaSalles brawl to a schoolyard fight that begins when one person pushes another and quickly escalates. In this case drugs or alcohol caused the violence to spread, he said.

“People use these incidents as an excuse to take out their anger or testosterone on others,” he said. “‘I want to punch someone, so I do.’”

Other bars reported fairly mild activity.

Caroline Dabrowa, a server at Bella’s Sports Pub, said the crowds in the bar were slow on Friday and Saturday. “But we were packed on Sunday with lines the whole time,” she said, emphasizing that the patrons were well behaved.

“The only problems we had were two people who passed out in the bathrooms and two who threw up on the tables.”

A manager at The Graduate Restaurant & Bar said St. Patrick’s Day was much slower than last year. “Saturday night was very busy, but Sunday the crowds were definitely slower than in past years,” said restaurant manager Jake Lapp. “Last year our corned-beef-andcabbage special sold out by 1 p.m., but this year we had leftovers at closing time.”

Laver said the Chico police are grateful for the overall improvement in the holiday-goers’ behavior. “I’m thankful to the public and especially business owners and those who are college-age for keeping this St. Patrick’s Day weekend a safe non-event,” he said.

ince the middle of January the smell of sewage was thick in the air near the corner of Fourth and Main streets in downtown Chico.

Doug Roberts, owner of Duffy’s Tavern, which sits near the corner, also noticed it, as did many of his customers and environmental scientist John Lane, whose office is on the second floor on that corner.

Roberts and Lane both asked the city to look into the matter, as day after day they could see milkycolored water spilling out from under the sidewalk and into the city storm drain directly in front of the Main Street bar called Lost on Main.

Lane said the city’s response initially was slow and that he eventually contacted the State Water Resources Control Board, which in turn contacted the city. Lane’s professional history includes working as a hydrogeologist for a Watsonville company that designed water-supply and wastewater-treatment systems and managed stormwater systems. He took samples of the water and sent them to a lab to test for E. coli and fecal matter.

“The lab called us back and wanted to know where the sample was from because it tested so high in fecal matter and coliform bacteria,” he said. The city, Lane said, could have been cited by the state for violation of the Clean Water Act. The problem was finally identified and then fixed in mid-March. The trouble was a combination of downtown Chico’s high groundwater levels and old plumbing installed in the downtown building’s basements decades ago. In this case, it was the restaurant and bar

called the DownLo, which sits beneath Lost on Main. The building is owned by Dennis Ullrich, and the two bars are managed by his son, Kyle. Neither man could be reached for comment on this story.

Matt Thompson, a senior

civil engineer with the city, said the downstairs bar has two sumps, or holding tanks; one to collect rising groundwater, the other to collect sewage from the public toilets. A power failure sometime in January damaged the pump that feeds the sewer sump.

That sump was connected by a pipe to the groundwater sump, and as it backed up with sewage it eventually flowed into the groundwater sump, where it was pumped up and into the storm drain, which eventually empties into Little Chico Creek near the skateboard park on Humboldt Avenue.

“All the pipes are buried under the floor,” Thompson said. “When they put these pumps in many years ago they engineered a connection to keep the basements from flooding should the sewer pump fail.”

The pumps have an alarm should they fail, he said, but the electrical failure fried the alarm.

“When it happened, it worked like it was supposed to when it was designed all those years ago,” he said. “But they are going to retrofit it, so it doesn’t happen again.”

In a letter to Dennis Ullrich, the building’s owner, Thompson said that when the plumbing was installed decades ago a connection between the sumps may have been

legal under the existing building code. Today it is not, he said.

“The cross-connection has demonstrated that it is a potential threat to public health and must be eliminated,” he wrote. “Please obtain a plumbing permit and isolate the groundwater sump from the sewer sump.”

Thompson said the Ullriches

have been very responsive in the matter.

“I have every belief that they will do what we’ve asked,” he said.

“We haven’t considered any fines at this time, because they have been not only cooperative but [also] proactive to try to get this problem identified and resolved.

“I like to reserve fines for people who are, let’s just say, much less civically minded than they’ve been. They’ve been a great help in resolving this issue, so we are going to treat them like partners.”

Thompson said the problem has raised a red flag for the potential for this to happen in other buildings with underground restrooms, such as the University Bar on the corner of Wall and Second streets.

“We put out the fire but learned we have a lot to do, including a survey of downtown businesses to help us identify other places and hopefully get it fixed.”

Roberts, Duffy’s owner, appreciates that the smelly river running in front of his bar is gone, but has some reservations.

“I’m glad it’s been fixed,” he said, “but I do have some concern about how easy it happened and that it could happen again.”

That occurred back in 2009, when the BHS ran both the shelter and the adoption programs, and the facility won a $50,000 makeover through a contest sponsored by an online pet-product retailer. (The city took over shelter operations in February 2012.)

The publicity, they say, helped clear out most of the cats at the facility.

the community worried that the nonprofit would no longer facilitate feline adoptions.

That’s because, beginning on Feb. 1, the Chico Animal Shelter stopped accepting stray, feral and surrendered cats.

“I spent one to two hours a day talking to owners,” said Alexander Tuesday morning (March 19) at the organization’s administrative offices on Fair Street.

“Telling them, ‘We have not closed the Cat Adoption Center.’”

What people often don’t understand is that the city shelter and BHS are separate agencies, though the two work in cooperation, with BHS taking many of the city’s animals into its adoption programs. The shelter’s new policy of not accepting cats is in line with the stance many municipalities have taken in recent years, after decades of having an open-door intake policy yet making little or no headway in reducing the overall cat population.

Since the beginning of March, BHS has been conducting a pilot program allowing for the surrender of certain adoptable pet cats, and on Wednesday, March 20, that program was opened up to the general public.

The Cat Rehoming Program requires those wishing to surrender a cat to fill out a detailed application form (found on the BHS website at www.buttehumane.org) that asks questions ranging from the animal’s age to what its personality is like.

Cats eligible for the program must be spayed or neutered and in good health. Each animal will be checked by a veterinary technician, Alexander noted, and then, depending on the availability of space at the Cat Adoption Center, accepted into the adoption program.

A visit to the clean and well-run facility this week revealed dozens of healthy adoptable cats scattered among a few rooms, lying on specially constructed PVC-pipe beds of various heights, peeking out of chests of drawers, and climbing on other cat-friendly accessories.

Alexander said the 31 cats up for adoption constitute a fairly small number, though behind the scenes dozens of other cats are being prepared for adoption.

Only recently, with its adoptable-cat population on the lower side, BHS has begun partnering with animalwelfare agencies outside of Chico, taking in adoptable animals from such areas as Oroville, Corning and Orland.

“We’re pretty stuffed full at all times, so this is a new thing for us,” he said.

Alexander was quick to point out, however, that kitten season is just around the corner, and while things have been quiet over the winter months, he expects the cattery will be hopping now that warmer weather has triggered the feline breeding season.

BHS likely will take in its share of kittens and cats from the city shelter, which makes exceptions on its intake policy for orphaned kittens, as well as sick and injured cats that require rehabilitation or euthanization.

On the city side, Tracy Mohr, animal-services manager, said she has been encouraging members of the public to use social media and sites like Craigslist to rehome pets themselves since the new policy went into effect, and the shelter staff will now also refer residents to the BHS’ Cat Rehoming Program.

Both Mohr and Alexander noted that the city carefully considered the no-surrender policy before adopting it, meeting with animal-welfare organizations from throughout the region. There was consensus it is the right thing to do, they say.

In short, there aren’t enough adopters to give each stray cat a home, so taking all of those animals to the shelter means they will linger at the facility or, in the case of feral cats, be euthanized. The public is counseled to come together to spay and neuter stray and feral community cats, taking advantage of low-cost programs offered by BHS, Paws of Chico, Pawprints Thrift Boutique, and other organizations.

Mohr said most residents seem to have accepted the new no-surrender policy fairly easily, although she, too, has had to deal with concerns from the public.

“We have had people call and they’re upset, but once we have a conversation with them and say why it’s beneficial to the cats, they’re understanding,” she said.

President Obama is urging Congress to approve funding for clean-energy research to move away from vehicles reliant on oil.

Obama has proposed using revenues from federal oil and gas leases on offshore drilling to fund $2 billion (or $200 million a year) in research for “breakthrough” technologies like batteries for electric cars, biofuels made from unusual materials like switch grass and engines that make more efficient use of natural gas, according to SFGate.com.

The president’s idea of an energy-security trust is modeled after a plan submitted by Securing America’s Future Energy, a group of business executives and business leaders working to reduce the nation’s oil dependency.

Creation of such a trust would require the approval of a divided Congress; many Republicans are pushing for expanded oil and gas drilling on federal lands, while many Democrats support further development of renewable energy sources.

EXTREME WEATHER DOWN UNDER

The Australian government has cited climate change as a major factor in the nation’s recent extreme weather events.

While the country has traditionally hesitated to link climate change to individual weather events, a report released by the Australian Climate Commission concluded the global phenomenon was largely to blame for the recent record-setting, four-month heat wave, which was followed by heavy rains and flooding that caused about $2.43 billion in damage, according to The New York Times.

The report, titled “The Angry Summer,” asserts that Australia’s naturally occurring cycles of drought and flooding rains will become progressively more extreme unless major steps are taken by the global community.

SACRAMENTO RIVER PLANS REVEALED

Preliminary drafts of California’s controversial Bay Delta Conservation Plan were released on Thursday, March 14.

The draft documents for the $14 billion project, which would involve two giant tunnels to divert water from the Sacramento River and three new intake points along the river in Sacramento County, are considered a preview of the formal draft expected in July, according to The Sacramento Bee. The tunnels ostensibly would protect the water supply—which serves 25 million Californians and 3 million acres of farmland from San Jose to San Diego—from floods, sea-level rise and earthquakes. Supporters also maintain the project would restore 145,000 acres of habitat critical to wildlife.

For the love of sprouts Despite health risks, sprouts are seen by many consumers as a nutritious addition to their diets by

she’d grown in her home to happy locals.

These days, she’s still a regular at the market—but as a shopper, not a vendor. Too many regulations had gotten in the way of her sprouts business, and recent national attention on the tiny greens means more stringent policies might soon arise.

“I’d been growing in a converted closet,” Shanti said during a recent phone interview. “But at a certain point [growing sprouts] was put under California state regulations instead of Butte County regulations, and they had to be grown in a commercial kitchen, and every batch had to be tested for two different pathogens.”

She explained that this change was not mandated—the county simply realized it wasn’t the correct oversight agency.

Nonetheless, the steps required to bring her garden up to code were too much for Shanti, so she stopped growing commercially.

“Sprouts offer super good nutrition,” said Shanti, who used to sell alfalfa, clover, mung, fennel, peanut and adzuki sprouts, in addition to her popular sprouts mixes.

“They break down proteins and fats to a state that’s more easily assimilable in your body.”

But Shanti’s difficulty with state regulations five years ago was just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to those interested in growing sprouts today. Several outbreaks of salmonella and E. coli over the past several years have been traced to sprouts, putting them—along with other bacteria-carrying produce—on the federal government’s public-health radar.

“Produce has been identified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as the most commonly identified food vehicle for food-borne illness outbreaks,” Patrick Kennelly, of the California Department of Public Health’s Food and Drug branch, wrote in an email.

“The Sprouts Safety Alliance is one of many produce safety initiatives that is currently going on in the United States.”

The Sprouts Safety Alliance Kennelly referred to was formed last year by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, with

cooperation from the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Institute for Food Safety and Health. The goal is to create guidelines for sprouts growers that will help increase the safety of their products. The main concerns are that sprouts are often grown in tubs inside (not in the ground), and that they’re usually consumed raw rather than cooked.

“Sprouts are grown in a warm moist environment, and are routinely flushed with water to maintain the moisture necessary for the sprouts to grow,” Kennelly said. “Unfortunately, this is the same type of growing environment that allows harmful bacteria to rapidly grow and reproduce.”

He explained that bacteria present on one seed can easily be spread to other seeds in the bin during the washing process.

sprouts regularly tout their nutritional value as well as the ease with which they can be added to one’s diet.

“They’re an inexpensive, easy source of vegetable protein,” she said. “And they’re versatile; they’re great for people who are wanting to put more vegetable protein in their diets.”

Many sprouts are a good source of protein and vitamin C, according to the International Sprout Growers Association.

“Sprouts are the only form of agriculture that can be locally grown and available in all four seasons,” reads the organization’s website.

Sprouts also have been linked to cancer remedies as well as heart health. The University of Saskatchewan has studied the health effects of broccoli sprouts in pregnant rats and released its find-

Surprisingly, this dietary change not only improves the health of the expectant mothers, but also has a lasting effect on the offspring.”

But, all news isn’t good news for sprouts and human health. Kennelly pointed to 3,000 people who became infected with E. coli in 2011 at a festival in Germany. The outbreak was linked to raw sprouts and led to 53 deaths.

to consuming sprouts, many point to the fact that they are most often eaten raw. Kennelly suggests cooking them as the easiest way to kill harmful bacteria.

“It is next to impossible to determine if your sprouts are contaminated with dangerous bacteria that are capable of causing illness,” he said. “For that reason, we would recommend that consumers cook sprouts thoroughly to reduce the risk of illness, as cooking kills harmful bacteria.”

discontinued her sprouts stand, she’s approached often at the farmers’ market with questions about her intentions to start up again. As of now, the answer is no—the price tag is too high (registration fees range from $348-$1,790) and the requirements are too much for her to want to deal with. In fact, there are currently no registered sprouts growers in Butte County, according to the California Department of Public Health. (Organic sprouts are available locally at the Chico Natural Foods Cooperative, which buys them from a distributor in Sacramento, as well as at S&S Organic Produce and Natural Foods.)

Shanti’s not letting governmental rules get in the way of her own eating habits, however. Her belief in the nutritional value of sprouts keeps her growing for herself, and she said she would consider teaching a class about sprouting to others who are interested.

“I’ve been sprouting personally for 20 years,” she said. “Right now, really the only thing to do is to grow them yourself or grow them with someone you know.” Ω

TIME BOMB, NOT FOOD There’s a billboard near my house featuring a huge photograph of Jack in the Box’s new Hot Mess burger, an astonishing, piledup mélange of burger patty, onion rings and jalapeño peppers on a sourdough bun, slathered in “gooey pepper jack cheese,” as Jack in the Box’s website describes it.

“Jack in the Box’s Hot Mess Burger is possibly the messiest fast-food burger my hands and mouth have ever wrapped themselves around,” wrote Marvo, in a January 31 post at TheImpulsiveBuy.com.

“What makes this burger so messy?”

Marvo asked. “What was to blame for my excessive use of paper products was the greasy, toasted sourdough bread and the melted white cheddar and pepper jack cheeses,” which Marvo described as “more like a cheese sauce…[that] didn’t harden much and … oozed all over the place.”

THE PULSE MEDI-CAL EXPANSION PASSES

California’s Assembly and Senate have passed two pieces of legislation to expand the Medi-Cal program.

Under the umbrella of the federal Affordable Care Act, which will require most Americans to buy health insurance by 2014 or face a penalty, the state Senate and Assembly bills will ensure more than 1 million low-income and uninsured Californians will have access to Medi-Cal coverage, according to The Sacramento Bee’s Capitol Alert. The bills extend coverage to adults over 65 who don’t have children living at home, and raises the ceiling for eligibility to 138 percent of the federal poverty level, or $15,400.

More than 7 million Californians are currently covered under Medi-Cal; the expansion likely will result in between 1 million and 1.6 million new enrollments by 2014.

WOMEN’S LIFE EXPECTANCY FALLING

The average lifespan for some of America’s women is getting shorter, a study finds.

Researchers from the University of Wisconsin looked at federal death records for nearly all of the nation’s counties over 10 years, finding about 43 percent had declining life expectancy for women, especially disadvantaged white women, according to the Huffington Post. They found the average premature-death rate— mortality rates for women ages 75 and younger—rose in 1,344 of the counties studied.

Many of the counties with high prematuredeath rates were in the rural South and West, and some experts point to such factors as high obesity and smoking rates.

Women typically have longer lives than men (a baby girl born in the United States today is expected to live to be 81 years old, while a boy is expected to live to age 76), but data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show the gap has been narrowing since the late 1980s.

OF SKIN CANCER AND ASPIRIN

Regularly taking aspirin may reduce women’s risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, a study finds.

Researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine looked at data on 60,000 American women between 50 and 79 years old over a period of 12 years, finding those who took aspirin regularly had a 21 percent lower risk of developing melanoma compared to women who did not take the anti-inflammatory, according to SFGate.com. Further, women who took aspirin for five years or more had up to a 30 percent reduction in risk.

The authors noted that the study did not meet the standards of a clinical trial, as the research involved self-reporting on the part of participants.

The technology is called 4-D cardiac ultrasonography, and Feather River is the first hospital in Butte County to employ it.

What is the fourth dimension? Essentially it’s time, translated into motion.

“When we talk about how the heart is actually beating, it moves in more than one dimension. We can evaluate it better looking at it this way.”

Four-dimensional ultrasounds have been used in obstetrics to show the fetus to expectant mothers and their doctors.

Through cardiac scanners, the technology has made a logical leap into cardiology.

Feather River still uses its 2-D scanners, but cardiologists now have the option to order 4-D scans when needed.

“We’re really excited to have this equipment up here on the Ridge,” said Benjamin Mullin, the hospital’s director of cardiopulmonary services. “The image quality that these machines generate is

superb, and physicians may be able to see things that they couldn’t before, to help them with their diagnosis. The more information they can get, the better it’s going to be for the patient.”

Heart scanners have been in use for many years, to detect a variety of conditions. The new scanners are particularly helpful in detecting weaknesses in the heart walls. This may apply to patients undergoing certain cancer treatments known to affect the health of cardiac muscle tissue.

In these cases, a significant application of 4-D is AFI, or automated function imaging, which GE describes as a software tool that animates scans to show “in real time” strain on the heart wall.

“When using the automated function imaging, we can see if there’s a segment stiffening,” Meyer said—potentially an earlier sign of trouble that may not be detected on a two-dimensional image without the benefit of AFI. “Many patients can benefit from that, even those you wouldn’t expect,” Meyer continued. “It’s a way to be able to make sure the heart muscle is strong and healthy in all the segments.”

The 4-D scans require only five to

10 minutes more than the 2-D scans, running the total time for the test to 45 min-

utes to an hour.

“It’s just like [getting a 2-D] an echocardiogram,” Meyer said. “They lay down in a darkened room like you would [for] a sonogram. The technician scans the heart and activates the protocol to initiate the automatic function imaging, and the machine pretty much takes care of that.”

The information gathered in the scan gets downloaded as the scanning takes place, and the physician reviews the scans later.

Business is booming on the 4-D cardiac ultrasound scanners: “We’re using both of them every day,” Meyer said, “to capacity.”

Physicians and technicians received special training on the equipment. So far, Meyer said, the reviews are positive, with different physicians appreciating different aspects of the technology.

“One of our doctors is just thrilled with the AFI,” Meyer said. “Another is more conservative and said he’d wait to say what his favorite tool is.”

As for how patients will benefit, Meyer said, “I feel we’ll be giving them quicker insight into the health of their heart muscle, and that may in the long term help their outcome.” Ω more HEALTHLINES continued on page 17

meeting the needs of North State residents who look elsewhere for health care, Oroville Hospital is expanding its services and its physical footprint.

The hospital announced last week that it would open a 68,000square-foot complex at 2450 Oro Dam Boulevard—the old Montgomery Ward building that Oroville Hospital is leasing a few blocks from the medical center’s main campus on Olive Highway.

Along with housing an internalmedicine clinic and expanded physical-therapy center, the facility (called Dove’s Landing, after the bird in Oroville Hospital’s logo) will hold a medical spa, dialysis center, pharmacy and urgent care.

The penthouse will contain administrative offices.

“We’ve been watching that building for a long time,” Robert Wentz, CEO of Oroville Hospital, told the CN&R. “We wanted an upscale, beautiful medical office building to meet the needs of our population who have been driving to Sacramento for their health care.

Meanwhile, proximity to the Oroville Sports Club will allow physical therapists to expand their treatments to include water modalities.

The new offices at Dove’s Landing will accept Medicare and most private insurance plans, though cosmetic procedures at the medical spa are not typically covered by insurance and will require payment by the patient. Other hospital clinics will continue to accept Medi-Cal patients.

Dove’s Landing is expected to open in four to seven months. (“Hopefully before the end of the year, we’ll have a party,” Wentz said.) Oroville Hospital elected to keep the exterior shell of the building—which was recently remodeled—and fully refit the interior.

“It’s a very sturdy, tilt-up concrete construction with tremendous utilities coming in,” Wentz said of the decision not to raze the existing structure. “It’s a very good building that’s stood the test of time.”

Searching for snipes My life as a mentally ill and homeless man by Don Regis-Bilar

n a mid-November evening last year, I was sitting in the caged-in back seat of affable Chico police officer Scott Harris’ squad car. A light rain was falling. I was grateful that I hadn’t been handcuffed, as had been recommended by a peer assistant at the Torres Community Shelter, where I had been a “guest” (their term) for seven days.

Peer assistants are well-trained individuals whose job it is to be available for guests to talk with, generally in times of trouble. About an hour and a half earlier, I had been in the conference room at the Torres talking with the peer assistant about my state of mind. Johnny Meehan had opened his office door adjacent to the room and, seeing me in tears, asked if he could join us. I nodded yes.

Johnny is my service coordinator at the shelter and had admitted me seven days earlier. Service coordinators act as guides to move us through and out of homelessness.

I was born in San Francisco in 1954, so I In a halting and disjointed manner, I was explaining that since noon I had been obsessing about suicide and how I could pull it off. At the mention of the word “suicide,” Johnny explained in a calm, professional manner that it was Torres policy that he call the Police Department for a “welfare check.”

While waiting outside for the police to arrive, I paced and chain-smoked cigarettes. With a reassuring demeanor, the peer assistant stayed at my side until Officer Harris, after asking me a series of pointed questions to assess my mental stability and doing a patdown, placed me in his vehicle.

In the darkness, I could see a glowing green-on-black computer screen that held an account of my behavior and symptoms. Stopped at a red light before a freeway on-ramp, Officer Harris turned and said, “If you ask me, Don, the mental-health system in California is broken.”

He was correct, of course, and his comment was prophetic as to what I was about to endure.

can easily recall the late 1960s and early 1970s, when then-Gov. Ronald Reagan closed the majority of mental institutions in California. Then, in the 1980s, as president, Reagan slashed funding for mental-health treatment in the United States. Both acts caused a steep rise in homelessness, as homelessness and mental illness often go hand in hand.

The irony remains that President Reagan was shot by a mentally unstable man.

My own mental illness first became apparent when, at 9 years of age, I swallowed a vial of my father’s sleeping medication. It was 1963, and the notion that parents sexually abused their children was generally not considered.

Being sexually molested by both my parents overshadows my earliest recollections. I never forgot, never repressed those memories.

That was the year President John F. Kennedy’s assassination played out on all three television channels for days.

The message was clear to me: No one was safe from harm—not the president of the United States, certainly not a child.

seem surreal.

Finally, at age 39, I cracked up under the pressure, folded the newspaper and admitted myself to the Carson-Tahoe Hospital Psychiatric Ward for 28 days. There, I felt I got a handle on my mental illness by connecting the dots between my childhood and adulthood. In the end, I resigned myself to being one of the walking wounded.

Additionally, my family had the cloak of the Catholic Church, with all its strict mores and patriarchal indoctrination, to assist in projecting an image of normalcy.

As I was growing up in San Francisco, the social upheaval and violence of the 1960s became the backdrop to my childhood and only added to the fear and confusion of a little boy. Conversely, the civil-rights and peace-and-freedom movements instilled a vague sense of hope that, of course, has never been fully realized.

My own mental illness first became apparent when, at 9 years of age, I swallowed a vial of my father’s sleeping medication. It was 1963, and the notion that parents sexually abused their children was generally not considered.

There would be more childish suicide attempts, yet no medical professionals, including child psychologists, caught on. Adult perpetrators are adept at manipulating children not to tell their secrets. During my formative years, my brain was being calibrated to accommodate psychological adversity.

The abuse stopped when I was 14, when my parents divorced. I entered a period of rebelliousness against my mother, who had, as was the custom in 1960s California, full custody of me.

But it was too late. The hardwiring of mental illness was in place. I made a succession of suicide attempts, one of which left me in a coma for eight days. I can still recall the disappointment I felt when I returned to consciousness.

In 1983, thinking getting out of the city would do me good, I moved to South Lake Tahoe, where I lived for

nearly 30 years prior to moving to Chico.

Throughout my life, periods of dark despondency have been interspersed with times of great lucidity and productivity. At Tahoe, I distinguished myself by co-founding and publishing a controversial newspaper, The Tahoe Reader, with the highest circulation of any print medium in the Tahoe Basin. It gave me a significant public profile and tremendous power, neither of which I could handle well.

The newspaper years were a time of feeling I was barely holding it together, self-medicating on pot and Xanax and writing of my depression in a series of columns titled “Fear and Loathing at South Lake Tahoe.”

I lived in much-admired homes with beautiful gardens, sat on boards and civic committees and wielded influence with my newspaper.

Tahoe is a community of the working poor, and I was anointed a “crusader for the downtrodden” by the wife of an owner of a ski resort. Looking back from my present circumstances, my concerns about poverty and social inequity

ground often live lives of failed relationships, post-traumatic-stress disorder, alcohol and drug abuse, self-hatred and suicide.

Bingo on most points.

I’m a tightly controlled man, so alcohol and drugs have not played large roles in my life. Marijuana is another matter. I often said publicly at Tahoe, “If it weren’t for pot, I’d be dead,” meaning that marijuana simply worked for me. There are certainly downsides to its use, but overall I have found it ... comforting.

As for relationships, I’ve had my share, but a goal has always been not to have children, to make sure there was no chance I could become my parents.

I’ve had great friendships, some romantic, some not. I’ve had great relationships, some platonic, some not. The concept of long-term commitment seems endlessly tedious to me, and solitude is what I strive for.

In late October 2012, close friends at South Lake Tahoe told me they were concerned about my behavior. What they had observed was that I was divesting myself of all material things and cutting myself off socially. At their urging, I called the crisis prevention line. I spoke at length with a

counselor named Richard Greco, and he asked me to promise to meet him at South Tahoe’s Barton Memorial Hospital’s emergency room.

After assessments by a series of healthcare professionals and being watched carefully by at a young female, then a young male, volunteer, I was placed on a 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold and sent to a mental hospital, North Valley Behavioral Health (NVBH), in Yuba City.

I spent two weeks there. I rarely spoke with any psychological counselors, but I nevertheless was placed on six medications.

Some of the stigma of mental illness has been mitigated by the pharmaceutical industry’s massive advertising campaigns.

Depressed? Pop a pill, even though some of the side effects may leave you feeling suicidal.

It is easier and more cost-effective to place the mentally ill on meds than provide us with therapy.

Then, inexplicably, I was discharged to the

Oroville Rescue Mission, without being given a choice. It was an edgy place. I lasted just four hours.

I walked into town and found my way to Oroville Hospital, but it took seven hours before I had the courage to walk in. I was admitted as being suicidal and having a mysterious infection for which I was given antibiotics. After three days, I was discharged to the Torres Community Shelter in Chico.

The Torres, which I had read about online about two years prior, is a remarkably well-run place. A 120-bed facility, it acts as a halfway house—a place where people whose lives have hit the skids to regroup with guidance and, hopefully, move on to productive existences. As a nonprofit, it is unusually transparent, with Bill Slack, the shelter director, maintaining an opendoor policy to any guest who wishes to speak with him. Furthermore, Brad Montgomery, the executive director, conducts monthly meetings, all guests invited, to discuss the ongoing operations of the shelter, take suggestions and answer questions.

There is a two-page, single-spaced list of rules (each of which you must initial) to which guests must adhere. The rules make sense, considering the orchestration required to make the shelter work on a daily basis.

The paid staff exhibits well-trained frontline professionalism, and a cadre of volunteers are ever cheery and gracious in meeting our needs.

Not only is one given a warm bed, hot shower, food, clothing, toiletries and overthe-counter medications; there are also oncea-week art classes and AA meetings for those so inclined.

The problem at the Torres is with a small, vocal number of guests who complain endlessly about the rules, the food and the staff.

I would like to say, “This is not a hotel, it’s a shelter and all of this is free to us. If you don’t like it, leave,” but I never do.

Police Department’s Crisis Intervention Team, continued to engage me in intelligent and soothing conversation as we drove through the rain.

When we arrived at the Butte County Department of Behavioral Health’s Crisis Services Unit, or CSU, I was let into the waiting room. Officer Harris wished me luck and said goodbye.

The purpose of the CSU is to assess individuals who walk in voluntarily or, as in my case, are taken involuntarily for a 23-hour assessment.

In the waiting area, I met a patient half my age whom I will call Chris. He would be instrumental to my survival over the next two weeks.

For one thing, he introduced me to “snipe hunting”—seeking out cigarette butts to either smoke or remove the tobacco from and make into a “rolly.” I realize that, to those outside the subculture of homelessness, snipe hunting may seem disgusting and desperate, but many aspects of homelessness would seem disgusting and desperate to the uninitiated.

Chris and I were placed on 72-hour holds at the nearby Psychiatric Health Facility (colloquially referred to as “the Puff”), where we would become roommates. Both our holds turned into two-week holds. My stay was uneven, to say the least.

Initially, I felt hopeful when I was told by the lead psychiatrist, who gave me a great deal of his time, “You’re smart, you’re going to get better and your most productive years are ahead of you.”

ondary psychiatrist that I was not suicidal. I asked why. “Because he’ll try to discharge you, and I don’t want you discharged,” he told me.

But when Thanksgiving weekend arrived, the lead psychiatrist was off work for several days, leaving the secondary psychiatrist in charge. Apparently wanting to free up my bed, he discontinued all of my meds.

This triggered more than 72 hours of sleep deprivation that was tortuous. On the third evening, as I began to experience audio and visual hallucinations, the charge nurse telephoned the secondary psychiatrist at home twice, asking that I be prescribed something for sleep. He refused.

“I’m being treated as if I’m a poor homeless man, which I am,” I said to the charge nurse.

With tremendous compassion she responded, “Yes, but that doesn’t give him the right to mistreat you.”

As at Yuba City’s NVBH, the real benefit came from bonding with other patients and the wonderful mental-health workers who interacted with us the most on a daily basis.

Chris and I, two men from very different backgrounds, talked for hours every day, and we both came to believe that our Puff experiences would have been much more challenging were it not for our becoming friends.

We were discharged on the same day. It turned out that my social worker, who was responsible for coming up with a discharge plan for me, did nothing that he said he would. Chris and I were booted out so quickly that they failed to give him his wallet.

At the Torres, I was welcomed back warmly by

staff and guests. My bed was as I left it. I met with Johnny and described what I had

endured at the PHF and assured him I was basically OK. I wasn’t, however, and by 9 p.m. I was unraveling in the office while talking with two staff members.

Again, one of them explained matter-offactly that she would have to call the Police Department for a welfare check. Those two women, eventually joined by another staff member, formed a protective circle around me as we waited for the police to arrive.

“You know what I thought when I first met you?” one of the women asked. I looked at her blankly. “I thought, there goes a very nice man.” I had no idea what she was talking about. At that moment, I was entirely selfloathing.

Two Chico police officers arrived this time, playing good cop/bad cop. I didn’t get their names. The good cop asked the requisite questions and noticed that I could not control my trembling. The bad cop, to my dismay, said with unabashed contempt, “People who are going to kill themselves don’t talk about it, Don.” I wasn’t about to argue, but made a tacit promise to myself then and there that I wasn’t going to go back into another mental hospital.

Thankfully, it was the good cop who drove me to the CSU, and our only dialogue was when he asked if I minded the music he was playing.

At the CSU, I stood outside smoking a snipe with another patient. A train whistle sounded in the distance. “It’s talking to me,” he said.

“What’s it saying?” I asked.

“It’s telling me my dog is dead,” he answered tearfully.

Steadfast to my promise to myself, I convinced the staff that I was stable, and was not sent off to a psychiatric hospital.

I am back at the Torres now, toughing out my scattered-marbles mind. I have the support of the staff there and friendships with a handful of other guests. I’ve followed up with my outpatient appointments at Behavioral Health, and so far it’s going well. A team is developing a treatment plan for me. Its four members include a psychiatrist who respects my wishes not to be prescribed any other meds besides Wellbutrin (an antidepressant) and Seroquel (a sleep aid), which I’ve been taking for two months; a nurse who manages my medications weekly (so that I’m not in possession of a lethal dose) and encourages me to write; a case manager who speaks with me with encouragement and a sense of camaraderie; and a clinical social worker whose competence and empathy move me when she says, “I don’t want to see you hurt yourself.”

I am categorized by the Behavioral Health team as “severely mentally ill” based on my lifelong history of mental illness, my recent spates of hospitalizations and my “suicidal ideation.” The team members, as well as Johnny at the Torres, believe I will get well. I have no clear sense of that, but because of all the sincere efforts being made to fix me, I’m willing to give it one more shot.

rity Administration are attempting to address my financial needs.

As a poor person, this is all at no cost to me. I feel no guilt or shame about that, as I have paid my societal dues.

In some ways, I feel faux-homeless: I’ve not earned the badge of honor of living on the streets, I haven’t had the gumption to panhandle (although I’ve had no money for nearly three months), haven’t been rousted from the bench at Children’s Playground, where I often take short afternoon naps, or been shooed away from Barnes & Noble, where I sometimes read for hours before checking back into the nearby Torres Shelter.

Chico has been largely welcoming to me.

Despite the brouhaha over the unsavory aspects of the downtown area, I find it pleasantly quirky, and City Plaza is a crossroads for us homeless.

On Saturdays the group Food Not Bombs serves up delicious free meals, the makings of which are contributed by Chico Natural Foods and the Saturday farmers’ market.

Some of the nearby coffee shops and Lyon Books and the used bookstore are hospitable, even though I don’t spend a dime. And then there are the tremendous resources of the Chico State library and the Butte County Public Library.

On Jan. 15, I attended the monthly meeting of the Greater Chico Homeless Task Force. It had been years since I attended such a bureaucratic gathering. Addressing the

nearly overwhelming issue of Chico’s homeless population, one of the panelists said, “We’re struggling with how to deal with it.”

Many days I walk or bike alone for miles, losing

myself in the astonishing vastness of Upper Bidwell Park. Connecting with nature has a settling effect on a man like me.

Throughout my life I have become adept as masking the trouble within my mind. I am reserved, well-mannered and confident in my social skills. Often I have been told, “You don’t appear mentally ill” or “You don’t look homeless.”

My response is bewilderment. Tell me, what do mental illness and homelessness look like?

There’s potential light at the end of the proverbial tunnel, if I can figure out how to turn it on. I’m signed with a literary agency in New York City, and a major publisher is waiting for me to produce a book synopsis (three chapters and an outline). The concept of re-entering anything close to public life leaves me wholly blocked.

One of the ironies of my life is that I am in very good physical health. Every day I remind myself of yoga philosophy: engage the breath, stay in the moment, don’t look back and don’t look forward. Also, I often think of Chris’ last words to me as we said our goodbyes, “You’re pretty cool, man.

De la Prade’s short version of the Babes’ beginnings is, “I’m an accordion player and I like to wear sexy outfits. That’s where it all started.” The full story includes her own coming to terms with the instrument.

She describes her father as a Francophile from Vermont, the son of French-Canadian parents who listened to accordionladen French music that, in keeping with typical child-parent relations, she found really dorky as a kid. But at age 19, while working in a music shop full of jig-diggin’ Irish musicians, she wanted to expand her musical horizons.

“Playing guitar was like chopping wood in Irish music, and I wanted something that could play melodies and harmonies,” she recalled. “So I thought, ‘Am I a mandolin player? No. A banjo player? No. A fiddler? No. But an accordion player? Hey, maybe.’”

Her father approved and bought her what she described as a “top-of-the-line, beautiful walnut button box.” Within months, she was busking the street corners and train stations of Boston, where she attended music school.

“The accordion is great for street performers,” she said. “People have seen a million guitarists, but an accordion is kind of rare. So even when I could only play 10 keys on the right hand I was getting great feedback.”

Fast forward a few years and de la Prade was working in Oakland’s Smythe’s Accordion Center and playing regularly around the Bay Area. A photographer wanted to take pictures of her and her accordion in front of Mission district murals in San Francisco, and she was inspired by the results.

For two years, de la Prade would run out of the repair shop’s back room every time she heard great accordion playing and a woman’s voice in the store, and she would give them a business card and invite them to join her project.

She said the project came together in 2008 when Isabel Douglass, who she described as a “world-class musician and dropdead gorgeous” signed on and offered to help with layout.

“We printed 1,000 units and they sold out in three weeks,” she said. “I’d never heard of any accordion compilation CD selling like that, so I figured we were doing something right.”

The annual release also includes a few revue shows and a visit to Duffy’s Tavern (which this year occurs on Sunday, March 24). This year’s lineup features de la Prade and fellow Accordion Babes Luz Gaxiola, Skyler Fell, Joan Wilson Rueter, Diana Strong and Amber Lee Baker. In addition to plenty of squeezebox action, the babes also use a fiddle, a guitar, a trombone, and a glockenspiel. The four-time Grammy winner’s portfolio is exhaustive and includes a bluegrass stint with Lester Flatt in the 70s as well as six years with Johnny Cash in the 80s. Perhaps Stuart’s most notable role is as leader of the extraordinary and versatile touring and recording band, The Fabulous Superlatives. NPR picked the 2010 Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives recording, “Ghost Train,” as one of its top ten albums of that year.

are entirely wooden. Much of the wood is in beautiful condition, protected (and hidden) for its 60-plus years by carpet. But there by are sections that provide small mysMaryRose teries to us: Why is the wood in the Lovgren hallway a light blonde, while the bedrooms are much darker? Do these marks suggest an additional wall existed between the master bedroom and its bath? What caused that dark stain here, those small holes over there?

Printmaker Allison Hyde, recent winner of the Solo Exhibition Award in the Janet Turner Print Museum’s 2012 National Print Competition, lets this fascination with such mysterious artifacts drive her art—from rolling, inking and printing the bedroom floor of an abandoned house, to altering photographic imagery using the ash from a fire. In “(De) Constructing Memory,” Janet Turner a series of 70 or so metal and plastic Print Museum hangers rest on a suspended closet Chico State rod. But instead of shirts or sweaters 898-4476

there are soft paper prints, each hanging down raggedly like cloth. The printed image on each is the inside of a room, and as the prints transition from left to right, bits of the room disappear, until the final paper prints are not prints at all. Hyde told me that this piece is a reflection on her grandmother’s Alzheimer’s and dementia, how her memories deteriorated over time. “I physically altered the negatives and ... scratched away things that I didn’t remember about the house [as well as] things that I thought were more pivotal to her,” she said. “The images fragment more and more until some of the sheets are just blank.”

Photography continues to be the medium in “What Remains: In Midair.” A girl with long dark hair in matching spotted pajamas jumps on a bed, head looking down. At least, that’s what I think I’m seeing, as the image is hard to make out, recreated as a serigraph using charcoal and ash. “Through the process of printing imagery with the gritty ash and charcoal from a fire, or distortion of large-scale photographs with repeated layers of deep black ink washes,” explains Hyde in her statement. “I aim to deconstruct the past, and reconstruct a visceral and emotional experience that speaks to history and preservation, memory and loss.”

The largest piece in the gallery seems the least effective. Rather than highlighting some enigma of a past life to be solved, “Mourning the Ephemeral V. III” stages one. Blackened and charred frames are stacked and strewn around a burnt two-drawer dresser with intact mirror on top. I can’t help but see the artist carefully arranging the set, dispelling the mystery inherent in her other pieces.

Hyde’s revealing a story in the marks left behind by making more marks through printmaking is where she does her best work. “The evidence of a person’s life often exists in the traces that remain after their passing,” she told me. “It’s these places that are steeped in history and tell stories about a person and about a person’s Ω identity that I’ve really been most interested in.”

NOW IN FULL COLOR Let Arts DEVO tell you about birds and the bees. Wait, scratch the

birds. Let me tell you about the poodle and the bees. You see, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and the two giant cherry trees on the DEVO compound have formed one giant white globe that is casting a bright light over the back yard. It’s a shining beacon to the new season, and the bees have taken notice and are eagerly going at it in the first orgy of the spring. All this activity has gotten me worked up as well, and last Saturday I ventured out into the nature surrounding our house with our tiny poodle in tow. As I got to work on the wildness—cutting back overgrown shrubs here, yanking out weeds there—my little friend found the most sunny spot on the patio and passed out.

As I began to clip, and cut, and dig through the yard, I let myself daydream about all that is happening in the upcoming spring. The first thing I thought about as I sneezed, and scratched, and stubbed, and bled, was A bee’s life. how much time I was going to be spending in the yard. There are days’ worth of maintenance to be done, and things haven’t even really started growing yet!

In addition to the weekends working (and barbecuing!) in the yard there is of course the upcoming Chico Area Music Awards season. I’m stoked to be helping with putting on the CAMMIES again. It’s a ton of work, but there are some great new bands that have me excited (have I talked about the French Reform yet?), some great old bands that have me excited (go to www.youtube.com/user/botchiireels and see the video of Surrogate’s super-catchy single, “Lovers,” made by former Botchii madman Tom Botchii), and I am excited about Rick Barnett’s super-sweet, old-timey, bird-musician art for this year. (Check out this year’s schedule on p. 21.)

There is, of course, a ton more than just the CAMMIES on the local community-events horizon. Every weekend of spring is packed. Kite Day is this weekend (March 24, Community Park); the Thursday Night Market opens the first weekend in April; the California Nut Festival at Patrick Ranch is on the same day as the CAMMIES finale (April 20); the Wildflower A bird-musician’s life.

Century race is the following week (April 28) and is followed by the Endangered Species Faire (May 4), Chico Art Fiesta (May 10-12), Music for Music Fest (May 11), the fair (May 23-27), and the Bicycle Music Festival (June 1).

There are also a ton of imminent changes that I will be attempting to not freak out about: The huge sycamores outside my office window are being torn down (and the street around it will then be torn up) as they prepare to build a new roundabout. Origami Recording Lounge owner Scott Barwick is closing down the live-show side of his business for now to focus on working in and remodeling his recording studio. Local theater god Jerry Miller has stepped down from the Summer Theatre Festival, and as of now, no one else has stepped up to continue that tradition. Oh, and as you may have read in last week’s issue, the biggest change of the entire spring is the fact that CN&R Editor Robert Speer is retiring! (Stay tuned for more than one column of devotion on that historical front.)

And my friend and colleague, current badass Managing Editor Melissa Daugherty, is taking over the editor job in May. That’s like … holy shit, how is so much happening?! Oh, and I gotta do my taxes!

I planned on writing a column about plugging into the energy source of spring to get juiced up for the season, but I think I need to find a warm piece of concrete and just bask in the warmth for a little while before getting started.

Rated PG-13. rise-and-fall tale with (spoiler alert, sorta) some semblance of recovery and redemption toward the end. But the resolution of these plot points is Poor half-hearted at best.

What the film does best is more a matter of jokes, gags, Fair comic bits, absurd stunts, strokes of satire, and whatever other silly business that turns up, willy-nilly, along Good the way. It has movie-scale production values and a story arc of sorts all right, Very Good but most of that superstructure turns out to be little more than a convenient place to hang a string of somewhat Excellent

disparate comedy sketches, not all of which are particularly well-conceived.

Director Don Scardino and his production designers (sets by Keith Cunningham, costumes by Dayna Pink) have some fun with lavish parodies of Vegas-style glamour, and there’s a big, attractive supporting cast on hand to provide some agreeable padding and relief for a story that never really gets beyond first and second gear, emotionally.

Alan Arkin has another piquant oldster role—as over-the-hill magician Rance Holloway, whose cheesy instructional tapes provided Burt, a bullied child, with his introduction to “magic.” James Gandolfini does a chummy turn as the possibly mobbed-up (and “Trumped”) casino mogul, Doug Munny.

Olivia Wilde holds up bravely as Jane, who is the utility infielder in this cast of characters—starstruck stage hand, comic magic-act ingénue, neglected assistant, would-be magician, and oh-what-the-heck formulaic “love interest” for the improbably narcissistic Burt. Jay Mohr is game too— playing Rick the Implausible, a magician/ comic who stumbles over his own punch lines, if and when he actually gets them out.

But Carell/Wonderstone barely registers as any kind of fully realized character, comic or otherwise. Even with his proven talents, Carell has no place to go with a character whose extremes of naïveté and callous egotism, of arrogant ambition and childish sentiment, take such arbitrary and willfully absurd form.

Maybe only Carrey could have made comic/dramatic sense of those bizarre extremes. But he’s got the two-dimensional villain/nemesis role here, and under these muddled circumstances, that’s more than enough for him to steal the show without half-trying. Ω

The Croods

Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone and Catherine Keener provide voices for this computer-animated feature about a prehistoric family on an adventure through uncharted territory. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG.

Olympus Has Fallen

Things explode all over Washington, D.C., as it is attacked by terrorists who kidnap the president (Aaron Eckhart).

His only hope is a disgraced former security agent (Gerard Butler) trapped in the White House and helping authorities who have no choice but to rely on his inside knowledge of the situation. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated R.

Oz the Great and Powerful

It’s been 74 years since the release of The Wizard of Oz, and director Sam Raimi (Spiderman) and company are exploring its title character, pre-Dorothy and gang.

Struggling magician/con-artist/womanizer Oscar “Oz” Diggs (James Franco) isn’t living up to his “great” potential, working the circus scene in Podunk, Kansas. So when a tornado sweeps him away to the land of Oz, where the inhabitants believe that he’s their awaited wizard, he goes with it. With the help of Glinda The Good Witch (a sappy Michelle Williams), this amateur hero attempts to save the citizens of Emerald City from the wicked sister witches (Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis).

There’s plenty of visual oohing and ahhing to be had, but the fun stops there. The dialogue falls flat and the mediocre acting does little to save it. Keep traveling down that yellow brick road. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG —R.B.

Ronald Harwood has adapted his own play about retired opera singers putting on one more show for the retirement home that is their special last refuge. Dustin Hoffman, making his directorial debut, amiably indulges a frisky cast of veteran Brit actors. The arrival of haughty diva Jean Horton (Maggie Smith) makes possible an on-stage reunion of the eponymous quartet, but maybe not—Horton’s still-heartbroken ex-husband (Tom Courtenay) figures in the erstwhile quartet and the now-humbled diva has her own pride and self-doubt to deal with. The other members, the exuberantly randy Wilf Bond (Billy Connolly) and the sweetly erratic Cissy Robson (Pauline Collins), nudge things toward geriatric farce early on. But once the diva is present, the tone changes to something verging on the tragicomic, and the feel-good finish (with a decorous touch or two of the bittersweet) is certain to draw a few well-earned tears. Harmony Korine (writer of Kids, and writer/director of Gummo and Julien Donkey-Boy) wrote and directed this twisted spring-break tale about a group of four college co-eds (including Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez) who hold up a fast-food joint to get money to fund their vacation and find themselves caught up in the dangerous and exciting underworld of a party-happy gangster (James Franco). I wonder if the night will go terribly wrong in this comedy written and directed by The Hangover screenwriters about two party dudes taking their friend out for his 21st birthday on the eve of an important medical-school interview? Cinemark 14 and Feather River Cinemas.

Jack the Giant Slayer

We start in familiar territory, with a teenage Jack accidentally letting some magical beans loose into the soil, causing an enormous beanstalk to explode toward the sky. It connects to a dangerous land between Heaven and Earth, where angry giants dream of making human bones into afternoon snacks. The beanstalk has also carried Princess Isabelle into the giants’ world and, damsel in distress that she is, she needs saving! (For all its updating, the storyline doesn’t do much for feminism.) There are some fun moments from a strong ensemble of actors, and the fantasy land of the giants’ world looks pretty cool. All the basic fairytale themes are recycled here:

Yet coconut oil may not be the evil grease it was t has saturated fat and can increase

once branded as. Though this tropical oil still retains some of the negative reputation that it gained during errant health by campaigns of decades past, foodAlastair Bland ies, health advocates, doctors and chefs of today are increasingly praising the virtues of coconut oil.

The product, which is extracted from the flesh of ripe coconuts and which remains opaque and solidified at relatively high temperatures, is famously fragrant; even in a crock pot mĂŠlange of spices, grains and veggies, coconut oil makes itself known with its sweet and incomparable aroma and taste. “I use about five gallons of coconut oil every couple of weeks,â€? says Ann Leon, owner and chef at Leon Bistro, on Main Street. Leon’s restaurant features mostly California-Mediterranean cuisine, yet the tropical scent and flavor of Southeast Asian coconut oil find an easy home in her kitchen. Leon uses coconut oil to sautĂŠ vegetables, to flavor chocolate mousse, to soften and sweeten fruit smoothies, to melt into root vegetable purĂŠes, in curries, and as a general replacement for butter.

At S&S Produce, grocery buyer Chris Schadt has seen coconut oil turn from reviled villain into esteemed superfood. “People used to say stay away from it,� says Schadt, noting that only in last four years has coconut oil exploded into its current star status. “Now, more and more people all the time are looking for it, often for their hair or for their skin, and also for cooking.�

Coconut oil was first castigated as a particularly unhealthful food in the years following World War II. The major strike against it was its saturated-fat content and its supposedly negative effects on cholesterol levels. As late as the 1990s, coconut oil was receiving negative press that labeled it a source of artery-clogging saturated fat and “bad� cholesterol. However, the studies of 20 years ago that spawned the unsavory hype were conducted using partially hydrogenated coconut oil, which contains trans fats. The good

stuff—and most of what is now available at retail outlets from your local cooperative to Costco—is unrefined, unbleached, pure and natural virgin coconut oil.

Yes, coconut oil contains saturated fat, but much of this fat is lauric acid, which boasts natural antifungal and antibacterial properties and is believed to support the immune system. Coconut oil has been linked to low levels of heart disease in Pacific Island populations. While it can increase cholesterol levels, this effect occurs mostly with high-density lipoprotein, or HDL—known as the “good cholesterol.� The overall consensus today is that coconut oil is good for us.

The vast majority of the world’s coconut oil is produced in the Philippines, Indonesia and India. The nuts are cracked open and the flesh ground out and dehydrated on heated sheets of metal. Finally, the dried shavings are pressed, rendering pure liquid oil.

Sealed in jars, the oil coagulates at room temperature.

At most small retail outlets, customers can expect to pay about $15 to $17 for a 32-ounce jar. Leon buys her coconut oil at Costco—among the most economical retail sources for the product. “A gigantic bin is about $20,� she says.

Leon also incorporates coconut sugar, coconut flour, coconut milk and coconut butter into her menu.

She notes that coconut oil is fast gaining popularity largely due to the increasingly popular paleo diet, by which adherents avoid all foods that were not present in mankind’s pre-agriculture days, like grains, dairy and refined sugars and oils. The paleo diet is frequently advertised as a meat-lover’s banquet, but vegetarians and vegans can participate, too—and among the many non-animal foods that paleo dieters thrive on is the coconut.

Falling in love with coconut oil is easy. Cook something. Anything. Brown rice. Quinoa. A kabocha squash. Potatoes. Serve some on a plate and melt coconut oil over the dish. Season with salt. Eat—and just try to go back to olive oil. While coconut oil is traditionally used in kitchens of South Pacific and tropical persuasions, and while it’s unlikely that chefs of classic French or Italian cuisine would ever incorporate coconut oil into their recipes, the truth is, their food just might taste better if they did. The first thing you’re likely to notice on this album—even before you are struck by Lisa Cee’s vocals—is just how well the fine guitar work provided by BR Mallon complements Cee’s voice. Mallon covers the waterfront of blues and rock styles on this 14-song disc, and he’s got all those licks down cold. He doesn’t overshadow Cee’s talents, but he sure does make a strong claim for his own highly developed skills on tracks like “Fire,” or on the old Staples Singers soul/funk standard “I’ll Take You There.” On “White Rabbit,” Cee and Mallon team up to revisit mid-’60s Jefferson Airplane psychedelia, though it’s not the best cut here, nor does it really measure up to the original. But perfect albums are rare, and I can probably count on my fingers the number of albums I’ve heard over the years on which every single track is a winner. About 10 of the songs on My Turn are pretty damn good, and a couple of them— “Cold Hearted Woman,” and “Fire in the Sky”—are likely to make you sit up and take notice. That’s a high percentage of good stuff by any measure, making it worth taking your turn at giving it a listen.

Sherlock Holmes would know not to judge a book by the cover—or in this case, by the subtitle. While Maria Konnikova does an excellent job of weaving together Holmes’ century-old adventures with modern psychological and sociological studies, detailing the inner-workings of our brains, she fails to bring her insight off the page or out of the laboratories. Konnikova lays out the facts and studies—reiterated ad nauseam— as if that’s enough information on how to adjust our way of thinking, failing to understand or note that an almost omniscient hand was guiding Holmes and the studies through controlled and contrived environments.

It’s great that Konnikova keeps this from becoming a DIY self-help book, but it suffers when she fails to apply her research and insight to the real world. As a result, it reads like a thesis desperately trying to reach a minimum word count. Dive into the book as Holmes would—with no preconceived notions—and you’ll discover a wonderful, if not tedious, analysis of Holmes’ methods through a modern psychological and neurological perspective. How you apply that to your life, well, that’s anything but elementary.

Comedy fans probably know Chelsea Peretti, either from her Comedy Central appearances or cameos in shows like Louie and Kroll Show. Now you can talk to her, too! The funnywoman launched her weekly podcast, Call Chelsea Peretti, about six months ago and it is pretty much what it sounds like—listeners call in and then, well, the magic happens. Sometimes the callers bring ideas of their own, or follow up on previous conversations, but other times Peretti picks the topic. Usually it’s something about murder, being punched in the face or her “food test,” which is basically Peretti listing a bunch of random foods to the caller to find out if their personalities are compatible. A recent episode with Adam Scott (Peretti used to write Parks and Recreation, in which he stars) features a ridiculously long, but particularly funny discussion of favorite snacks. (Teaser: Tune in to find out Scott’s personal Trader Joe’s snack recipe.) Be warned that her first few podcasts suffer from a lack of direction and her nasally voice borders on annoying. By episode three, however, the comedienne finds her way and her rhythm and the real Chelsea Peretti comes out to play.

After dumping a parking-meter canister full of quarters, dimes and nickels into a large secure cart, Greg Munster shifts his attention to the chilly morning air, tightening up his coat before inserting the change cartridge back into the parking meter, a firm click indicating the parking meter is good to go. With a slow, deliberate push of the heavy cart that holds dollars upon dollars of accumulated downtown Chico parking-meter change, the tall, brawny Oroville native moves onto the next one. Munster, one of two regular change collectors, has worked with General Services/Public Works for the past 26 years, after a decade of owning his own antique-clock repair shop. While the meters have changed over the years—switching from mechanical to electronic models—Munster’s positive attitude and enjoyment of his work remain the same.

Was the transition to electronic meters difficult?

Well, we had to have training, so we’d go out to the factory and learn how to deal with electronics. There’s a bunch of stuff we did on the computer that we never did before, so I had to be proficient with computers because I didn’t grow up with computers. The mechanicals were in constant repair—we were taking them apart, cleaning them, fixing what was wrong with them, putting it back together and putting it back on the timer, before you’re ready to put it back on the street. With the electronics, we have the possibility of recording everything—so we can go to the computer and

know exactly what happened to that meter.

What’s one of the most enjoyable aspects of the job?

Well, there’s a lot of self-gratification in coming to work and knowing what you have to do.

I’m not the kind of person who likes to deal with a lot of new things. So after this many years, you can pretty much put everything on a list and just go down the list and fix whatever’s wrong with it, or determine it’s time to replace it.

What should people know about the meters that they might not know?

Well, if you beat on them, they won’t work any better! But if there’s something wrong with the meter and we find it, we’re not going to ticket somebody for something that’s wrong with the meter. We’re not here to stick it to anybody; we’re here to provide a service that is a non-general fund to the city. What we do does not come out of the general funds, which is where all the money hits are being taken.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The TV

reality show Freaky Eaters profiled a woman named Kelly who had eaten nothing but cheesy potatoes for 30 years. Her average intake: 8 pounds of potatoes and 4 cups of cheese per day. “I love cheesy potatoes,” she testified. “They’re stewy, gooey and just yum-yum-yummy. They’re like crack to me.” I’m a bit concerned that you’re flirting with behavior comparable to hers. Not in regards to cheesy potatoes, of course, but to some other fetish. I will ask you to make sure that you’re not starting to overspecialize. It would be wise to avoid obsessing on a single type of anything.

There’s a retrospective exhibition of the work of my wife, Janice Porter, in the Trinity gallery in the Humanities Center on the Chico State campus. In gathering and transporting the work from our shed to the living room and to my workroom and back to the living room and finally to Trinity, I realized again what a good artist she was, imaginative, daring, and skillful. It also dawned on me that, although it sometimes seems like we were together forever, we spent most of our lives apart, and I wasn’t familiar with some of her early paintings.

She selected most of the work in the show last summer, and it ranges from the late ’70s to a couple of years before she died. I like seeing how her work changed, from mostly stylized figures, which she refined and developed in her illustrations for children’s books, to increasingly fluid, abstract forms when she started hanging around with that academic crowd.

Janice was never much interested in selling work, and I’ve been reluctant on her behalf. Pricing paintings that used to hang in the dining room felt like selling a pet turtle—not a dog but not a knick-knack either.

I wore a sign at the reception that said, “I’m okay.

Thanks for asking.” Although it was an hour or so between printing the tag and actually wearing it at the reception I was still okay when I put it on, which didn’t have to be the case. I look forward to seeing friends, well-wishers, and other allies, but enough sympathy renders me speechless and headed for an exit.

I’ve been attending a bereavement group sponsored by the terrific Enloe hospice program, and the last time we met we compared comments from other people, from “It’s time you got over it and moved on with your life” to “I’m sure it’s all for the best,” “You’ll find somebody else,” and the dreaded “I have someone you should meet.” We cringe and roll our eyes, though we know they mean well.

The reception went well. I went outside only once and then not for long. I knew I might blubber at some point, but I wasn’t worried for two reasons. First, I almost always blubber alone, very seldom when someone else is around. Other people seem to give me something to think about and do so I’m not just being sad and lonely. The other reason I wasn’t worried about blubbering is that I have a right to blubber when and where I please, and they’d better not try to stop me.
