was stunned when he found an oil well in his vineyard in 2011. Veneco Inc. owns his mineral rights and proceeded to drill and frack a well without even notifying Lyons.

Keith Gardiner is a third-generation Kern County farmer whose three 50-year-old deepwater wells were contaminated with chloride. He suspects the oil field tank farm and disposal well next to his property. The investigation will probably take years to prove, just like farmer Fred Starrh’s eight-year, $8.5 million judgment against Aera Energy. Aera contaminated Starrh’s groundwater with by frack wastewater, and now he is suing Dave Garcia Aera for $2 billion in punitive damages to clean up his aquifer.

The author is the Kern County farmer Mike Hopkins is political chairman of suing the California Division of Gas and the Yahi Group Sierra Geothermal Resources (DOGGR). HopClub. existence of the oil and agriculture industries.

The oil companies’ impunity has united Kern County farmers, who have formed the Committee to Protect Farmland and Clean Water.

The committee complained to the county supervisors of the oil industry’s encroachment on their farmland without notice and polluting their groundwater, soil and air.

These actions convinced the county supervisors to start crafting an interim public process for resolving land-use conflicts.

Water is life. We must have clean freshwater to grow our crops and food. Fracking mixes thousands of pounds of toxic carcinogenic chemicals with millions of gallons of freshwater and injects this brew into the earth, leaving from 30 percent to 70 percent of this toxic brew in the well. Fracking removes freshwater from our water cycle, leaving this unusable toxic brew to contaminate our groundwater, surface water, soil and air.

Agriculture is California’s No. 1 industry, with 81,500 farms producing $43.5 billion in annual profits in 2011. Fracking and farming don’t mix; just ask farmers Starrh, Lyons, Gardiner and Hopkins.

meeting, to scrap the agenda for the next council meeting, on March 26, and use the time for a workshop “digging deeper” into the goals of the new group Clean and Safe Chico, was a bold move. Members of the group had just made an impassioned and persuasive presentation to the council, and Goloff wisely decided not to let the momentum dissipate.

The eclectic ad-hoc group was formed to come up with responses to homelessness, but particularly the homeless transients and panhandlers who hang out downtown and in various other spots around Chico. It’s a good group with heartfelt goals, but as CN&R reader Bill Mash, himself homeless, notes in a letter to the editor on page 6, “When you target a minority sector under the guise of making an area ‘clean and safe,’ you do an injustice to the entire Chico community.”

Demonizing homeless transients is harmful, Mash writes, because it encourages another downtown group, alcohol-fueled “young hoodlums,” to take out their rage on homeless transients.

That’s why the council should focus the workshop on all of the factors that make Chico, and especially downtown, less than “clean and safe,” not just the homeless transients. Yes, there are more of them downtown, but let’s not go overboard. Downtown is still a highly attractive area. Our guess is that many Chicoans—probably most—still enjoy coming downtown during daylight hours.

Weekend nights are another matter. Too often, the sidewalks are filled with drunken and belligerent youths making a spectacle of themselves and frightening passersby. Any effort to make Chico cleaner and safer should also focus on them. Ω

A worthwhile filibuster Sen. Rand Paul’s old-fashioned, 13-hour filibuster last week

drew attention to the United States’ use of drones to assassinate suspected terrorists around the world. As Glenn Greenwald writes, “For the first time since the 9/11 attack, even lowly cable news shows were forced … to extensively discuss the government’s extremist theories of power and to debate the need for checks and limits.”

Polls show most Americans support the use of drones to kill terrorists, but that’s in part because most are unaware that far more innocent civilians, including children, are killed than terrorists.

As some analysts have noted, the program reflects an “empathy gap” whereby innocent people in Pakistan or Yemen are less worthy of living than those elsewhere. Imagine the outrage were the U.S. to target terrorists in London or Berlin, with the resulting “collateral damage.”

The drone assassination program is also deeply troubling because the criteria for targeting suspected terrorists are uncomfortably broad. Mere association with suspected terrorists, or being a man of a certain age in a certain village, is enough to generate a death sentence.

Then there’s the tricky matter of targeting people who happen to be U.S. citizens, as was the case with Anwar al-Awlaki. The Obama administration has been forced to twist itself into legalistic knots to justify taking the life of an American without due process.

Some people have pooh-poohed Sen. Paul’s biggest concern, which was that the administration might someday use drones to kill Americans on American soil. That would never happen, they say. But in fact the president has the power to label anyone anywhere, even an American on U.S. soil, an “enemy combatant” and do anything he wants to that person.

This represents an unprecedented expansion of executive power that every American should be concerned about. Sen. Paul did us all a service by calling attention to it. Ω

Passing of the torch As I’ve often said about my tenure at the CN&R, I’ve been working here long enough to have quit twice and been fired once. Well, I’m about to quit again, this time for good. I’m retiring at the end of May, after nearly 30 years at the paper, off and on.

I’ll no doubt do some reminiscing in upcoming columns, but for now I want to introduce my successor, our current managing editor, Melissa Daugherty. She will have the distinction of becoming the first female editor-in-chief in the paper’s history. About time, I say.

Originally from the East Bay, Melissa’s long had ties to this area. Her grandparents owned an almond and walnut farm outside of Hamilton City, and she spent many holidays here with them and her cousins. So it was natural for her to attend Chico State, where she majored in journalism and worked for three semesters on The Orion student paper.

After graduation in 2003, she took a paid internship with the Enterprise-Record, eventually going full time there, covering the town of Paradise and Glenn County.

But her best beat, she says in a short bio she provided me, was Chico State, where she “broke some pretty big stories, many picked up by AP.” Some of the highlights, she writes, include a story about the Chico fraternity whose members had sex with porn stars filming a video for a Van Nuys-based porn company; a story about an L.A. Times reporter who parachuted into Chico, got his article all wrong, and when Melissa busted him got fired; and her investigative piece about the death of Chi Tau pledge Matthew Carrington in a hazing ritual in which she revealed that his would-be frat brothers had been warned during a campus lecture that water hazing could be lethal.

In 2007 she moved over to the CN&R, where she’s filled almost every major role at the paper—Greenways editor, special-projects editor, news editor and managing editor—in addition to writing more than 140 stories. Along the way she and her boyfriend, Matt, managed to get married and have a baby together.

I’ve worked with Melissa for six years, so I know she’ll be a great editor. She’s got all the right skills, she knows the area well, her colleagues respect and like her, she’s a superb content and copy editor, and she writes beautifully. She could work anywhere, but she and Matt love Chico and are fully committed to this community, so here they’ll stay.

Re “Another one bites the dust: Chico building director gone in a cloud of mystery” (Newslines, by Tom Gascoyne, March 7): I find it odd that the best person for the position of assistant city manager is an employee who comes from Hemet, the place City Manager Brian Nakamura was last working. According to Mr. Nakamura, Mark Orme competed against 55 other candidates and (with the city manager having the last interview and say) came out the best possible choice. An unbelievable coincidence, at best.

I am curious why, if Mr. Orme is such a qualified employee, he did not become the Hemet city manager? I am also curious why (in tight economic times) Mr. Orme had to be hired at near top step. Additionally, Mr. Nakamura’s admitting that his friend from Hemet was “on his mind” does not indicate an open selection process.

Mr. Nakamura’s management style shows a clear tendency to fail to supply the City Council with timely information as to how he has arrived at a decision. When he brought the recommendation to reduce department heads, he admitted that the full report was incomplete due to time constraints. He did the same thing with salary adjustments of the remaining department heads. Finally, he clearly knew that he was going to hire Mr. Orme, but did not notify council until after salaries were set by the council.

Transparency and professionalism in city government are essential. I hope the city not only encourages these traits, it also demands them.

City Council, it is time to take a very serious look at the city manager you hired. We know he is willing to lie. He publicly stated to his staff, the council and the public in Hemet: “The outpouring from the community, council and department directors really confirmed my decision that ultimately I want to stay in Hemet. I never had a real desire to leave.”

That was less than a month before he accepted the job in Chico.

We’ve watched him talk in circles and give non-answers as he unveiled his plan that, as far as I can tell, is a promise to lay off close to a million dollars’ worth of employees with no data as to the real impact on the city. We’ve watched him end the careers of two longtime city employees. You don’t really think anyone is buying this “sudden retirement” nonsense, do you?

Now, after he’s jacked up the salary of the assistant city manager position, Nakamura is bringing in an old buddy to fill the job. By now you are realizing you made a bad hire.

You must be. So what are you going to do?

What about the hoodlums?

Re “Tackling transiency” (Newslines, by Robert Speer, March 7): When you target a minority sector under the guise of making an area “clean and safe,” you do an injustice to the entire Chico community. You also send a message that these people aren’t “OK,” giving young hoodlums additional impetus to attack and beat defenseless people during alcohol-fueled rages.

It’s abhorrent to exclude the issue of college students’ behavior while under the influence of alcohol in public meetings to make downtown safe. You might be thinking, “Ah, that’s not fair, it’s just a small minority of college students making poor choices.” If so, understand the very same thing can be applied to the homeless population. Until the issue of alcohol-induced violence and mayhem is addressed, downtown won’t be safe. Period.

More coyote tales Re “The coyote hunt” (Cover story, by Allan Stellar, Feb. 28): My grandfather was a hunter.

He took my grandmother hunting in Idaho for their honeymoon. He would track big bucks for days, camping in the snow from Tuolumne to the Warner Mountains. He never shot more than he could carry, and he would probably laugh at what passes for a “hunter” these days, zipping around on four-wheelers in coordinated Cabella’s camo, shooting pre-ordered pheasants in a pen.

He was no environmentalist— he bent sheet metal and shot pool for a living—but he was practical, he knew right and wrong, and he would have seen killing dogs

en masse as wasteful since it doesn’t achieve the desired goal of reducing their populations, which is the whole justification for the “hunt,” right? Shooting dogs for fun is not hunting, and it does not make someone a hunter.

I like both city folk and rural folk, and it’s too bad everyone gets so polarized because the majority of folk in both those places are nice, really. My issue is that this particular issue isn’t about “tradition.” “Tradition” is taking your kids into the wild and teaching them how to be patient, how to think like an animal, to track, to shoot and dress a deer, and how to

Adin is a lovely community of good, caring, hard-working people who take care of one another and welcome strangers as friends.

Hunting is a part of their heritage and livelihood. It is a shame that Mr. Stellar had to denigrate the whole community in a misguided attempt to “bear witness for the coyotes.” It’s an even greater shame that the CN&R had to print his nonsense.

be a good person. “Recreation” is popping coyotes like Now & Laters with a pistol-grip AR on the weekend for prizes.

I have lost many hundreds of dollars to coyotes, so I know the frustration and even considered poison and traps. But in all honesty one could kill a thousand of them today and there would be just as many tomorrow. From a population biology standpoint you can’t make a dent, which is one of the reasons it is high time to do away with this and other legal dogkilling sports.

I don’t anymore feel like I need to control nature, mostly because I can’t. I am smarter than them most of the time, and building cages and not being lazy has reduced losses to near zero, and while bending metal all day is nowhere near as fun as a 30-30, I can hear the coyotes howl at night and look my dog straight in the eye, and there’s nothing more Western than that.

I must object to Robert Speer’s assertion in his From This Corner column (“Coyote tale,” Feb. 28) that Allan Stellar’s piece was fair and balanced. It seemed to me that he went to Modoc County in search of violence and gore, and, finding none, he resorted to cheap caricatures of bloodthirsty, rifletoting rednecks instead.

Northeastern California has a predator problem. Adin has found a creative, entrepreneurial way to address the problem. Mr. Stellar may disagree with the coyote hunt, but any valid arguments he may

As a rancher who manages to live peacefully with coyotes and other predators, I take issue with these hunts. Not only is it well documented that they are counterproductive in reducing coyote populations, but killing as a part of a contest to see who can kill the most is wrong.

I’m not a hunter, but if I were a hunter who ate what I killed and treated the sport with respect, I would be furious to be lumped in with people who kill simply to win some sort of prize or trophy. Is this really what we want to teach our children? That certain lives have no value, or that our livestock matters more than our wildlife?

Thanks for highlighting the decimation of the coyotes. I have not heard them in the early morning hours for months. They are one of the charms of the Chico area— the wildness with the hominess of the area. The author did an excellent job of shocking me with pictures and descriptions of what he and his brave granddaughter had to endure in the Clampet-like mindset of Modoc County. And these are the yahoos who are protecting their gun rights. We should all be deathly afraid. Bring back protection for the coyotes and run the yahoos out.

I have never owned one in my life. People have their privilege to do what they want with their guns. However, I don’t agree with allowing people to have all these multi, big magazines, assault rifles, and that kind of thing. SCHOOL DISTRICT GETS DESIGN AWARD

The Chico Unified School District announced this week that it had received the 2013 Leroy F. Greene Design + Planning Award of Honor for the 42,000-square-foot science-classrooms structure recently built on the Chico High campus. A press release says the “building’s shape and orientation on the site were carefully developed in order to save as many of the campus’ mature trees and to allow for maximum daylight entering learning areas at all times of day.”

The building includes 16 classrooms, three science labs and a student commons area. Also receiving the award was the DLR architectural firm, which designed the building. The award is named for former Assemblyman and state Sen. Leroy Greene, who during his 36 years in office sponsored bills to fund the modernization of school facilities. Greene, who died in 2002, also introduced the bill that legalized bingo in California and one that would have legalized prostitution. That measure failed.

BEC OFFERS BLOOD TESTS

The Butte Environmental Council has received $11,000 in two grants that it will use to give blood tests to five people who lived close to the Covanta-owned cogeneration plant Pacific Oroville Power Inc. The ash from the plant, which created energy by burning wood as well as ag and “urban” waste, tested high in dioxins. There is concern that the exhaust from the burners may have contaminated the air for those who lived close to the plant.

BEC’s Mark Stemen said the organization is still figuring out how to offer the tests to those who may be affected. The tests will be analyzed by a lab in Germany, Stemen said.

The grants came from the Patagonia outdoor clothing company and Clif Bar organic food makers. Both companies’ websites mention their respective environmental activism.

CHICO MARINE KILLED BY TANK

Chico High grad and Marine private Casey Holmes was killed Monday (March 11) during a training exercise when he was struck by a tank on the Twentynine Palms Marine base in Southern California. Holmes graduated from Chico High in 2011, joined the Marines last May and completed basic training in August.

A family representative told KHSL-TV news that Holmes (pictured) was stationed in Hawaii and had last visited Chico at Christmas. He was said to be a gifted athlete in high school and considered among the most physically fit in his Marine company.

The family released the following statement: “Casey is remembered for his tenacity of spirit and his loving nature. Casey dearly loved his family and friends. Casey was happy to serve his country and was proud of his success in the Marine Corps.”

County turns to hawks and falcons to chase annoying gulls from the landfill

In recent years the state has urged landfills to try to disperse the birds, or the “flying rats,” as employees have come to call them.

The gulls, though considered disease-spreading vectors, are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Act, making it illegal to kill them or remove them or their nests from private property.

Of course, the property where the landfill has sat for nearly 50 years is public, and the birds— which come from Utah—don’t actually nest there.

Initially the county used pyrotechnics in the form of a propane-fired cannon that would emit a blast on regular basis, unnerving not only the gulls, but also the workers and customers.

Marina Winslow is the county’s solid-waste inspector. “I inspect the landfill every month,” she said. “Vector control is required by the state.”

An inspection report from her on the landfill dated Feb. 25, 2008, includes the note: “Upon [local enforcement agency] arrival to the tipping area, numerous seagulls were observed at the working face. Take necessary measures to keep birds out from the open space.”

Her Dec. 23, 2008, inspection report says: “Seagulls were observed at the work face area. The operator was applying screamers to control the birds.”

Winslow said the “screamers,” or soundproducing devices, were not effective.

“The gulls were not scared of the sound of the shotgun at all,” she said.

“They don’t care.”

So the county decided to try a new approach. In December, it awarded falconer Dave Myers a four-month contract to see if he could disperse the scavengers with his falcons and hawks. Judging from a demonstration last Sunday morning (March 10) organized by Winslow for county employees and their families, the new approach is not only effective, but also makes for great theater.

Abatement Services. He’s long been a falconer, having gotten his first bird in 1967, when he was 12 years old.

“I was originally a lizard boy before I

got a bird,” he said. “I guess I just advanced.”

He got the county contract—$1,000 a week—after making a bid last fall and is now on site seven days a week, six hours a day.

He has a business partner named Alan Taylor who’s been a falconer for 25 years. They have 10 birds in all— falcons and hawks—and use a combination of them each day. So far, the birds of prey haven’t caught a single gull, but their mere presence is enough to keep the pests away.

As Myers talked, the peregrine falcons, gyrfalcons and Harris hawks were either in crates or sitting outside tethered to perches. The birds wore fitted leather hoods to keep them calm. One gyrfalcon was on a perch on the front seat of Myers’ parked truck, listening to countywestern music.

“It keeps her calm,” Myers said. “At home they have TVs, and they mostly watch the hunting station.”

Myers demonstrated two approaches to scaring off the gulls. The first was carried out by a 9-month-old falcon named Parker. Myer pulled the hooded bird out of his crate and fitted his leg with an electronic tracking device. Then, with the bird placed on his leather-banded

wrist, he removed the hood. Parker, tethered to Myers’ arm, fluffed his wings and gave out a series of screeches.

Almost as if on cue, a flock of perhaps 100 gulls had gathered in the sky above, circling in coordinated motion and moving closer to the ground and its awaiting trash.

Myers pulled out a “pole-lure”—a fishing pole attached to a rope that carried a piece of meat on its end. He released Parker and began swinging the meat. The bird began its swift motion of flight, rising and then diving in blazing speed toward the food. The swarming gulls noticed this, and in unison they lifted higher and moved to the south.

Myers then pulled a Harris hawk named Venus from her crate and removed her hood. She, too, sat on his leather glove as he walked her across the landfill to a point about a quarter-mile away. He warned the children before he walked away, “Kids, keep quiet and don’t wave your arms and hands. She might think you’re food.”

He released Venus, and she flew over the area where customers—private and commercial—were dumping their trash.

The bird landed about 25 yards from her audience on a post that held food. Her initial flight again pushed away the circling gulls that had moved back and closer to the ground. She then made a series of flights, circling each time back to Myers’ waiting glove. The gulls disappeared.

Myers said that, besides the landfill, he has a contract with the county’s two casinos to help keep them pigeon free. And he is hoping to expand his business to cover area agricultural businesses as well.

county’s Waste Management Division.

He said the county is working under the California Code of Minimum Standards for hauling and disposing of waste materials, which includes keeping vectors out of the trash.

“We typically cover the trash with soil or tarps at night, to keep the gulls away from the trash this time of year, he said. “We used pyrotechnics for a while, but that was pretty devastating to the workers and the public.”

The gulls, he pointed out, learned to live with the blasts.

“It’s amazing how adaptable the gulls are for these predators, too,” he said. “If [Myers] comes out at 9 or 10 in the morning, they’ll fly away. But they’ll come back the next day at 7 in the morning. So now he comes out and stays from 7 until 4.”

Mannel said that, beyond state encouragement, the county is trying to effectively shoo away the gulls for practical reasons.

“We did this in part to try to find a very effective technique to protect the employees and our customers,” he said.

“You put 5,000 gulls in the area, and they’re crapping on everything.” Ω

About three dozen employees—some in office wear, some in weather-beaten orange shirts and all fresh from a day’s work— attended an informational meeting at Chico’s Oxford Suites Tuesday (March 12) evening held by the Redding-based United Public Employees of California (UPEC), Local 792, to hear what the organization has to offer employees.

The workers are members of the county’s General Unit and Social Service Worker Unit currently represented by the Butte County Employees Association (BCEA), Local 1.

The units include employees working for Public Works, Behavioral Health and other departments.

UPEC Business Manager Christopher Darker and union relations representative Christine Perry reiterated several times that the meeting’s purpose was not to poach the BCEA’s members, but simply to let them know they have options.

“We’re not here to knock our brothers and sisters,” Perry said. “Some of the people here asked to learn about us. This is America; we think competition is healthy, and we came down tonight to share our strengths and introduce ourselves.”

The meeting turned into a good deal more than a meet-and-greet as angry employees shared horror stories about co-workers whose wages qualified them for public assistance and others who hadn’t received raises in more than five years. Some said they work multiple jobs to make ends meet.

At the heart of the debate are last year’s contract negotiations between the county and its employees. In the end, workers were forced to accept a deal that included a 2 percent raise (which workers say isn’t enough to keep up with inflation and cost of living), but cut their employer’s contribution to retirement funds.

The employees have also absorbed rising costs of their medical benefits.

One worker, who asked not to be identified, summed up the situation thusly: “We now pay all of our PERS retirement contribution, which is 7 percent of our salary. The county used to pay this as part of our benefits package. We still are required to pay this contribution, but now out of our pockets, which for me and many of my co-staff adds up to about $300 a month less take-home pay than just three years ago.

“We are also paying more for our crappy health-care insurance. We pay more for copays, office visits, prescriptions and deductibles.”

The UPEC reps touted these separate decisions as evidence of the union’s democratic approach.

“We’re here to research and present you with options, and then you guys vote on everything you want to do, and we’ll make it happen,” Darker said.

At the end of the meeting, several workers took away petitions that would decertify BCEA as their labor representative. Perry said 30 percent of the union members’ signatures are needed to move it to the next level, a confidential poll of all members on whether to stick with the BCEA or move to UPEC. She said the General Unit needs 275 signatures and the Social Service Worker Unit 150, and they must be submitted between April 3 and May 2.

UPEC represents 3,500 workers in 65 separate bargaining units from the Oregon border to Carmel. It is a member of the Laborers International Union of North America and the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO).

This was UPEC’s second meeting in less than a month with BCEA members. The first was held Feb. 25 in Oroville. Perry said employees invited them again to accommodate Chico workers who couldn’t make it to the first meeting.

“The fact finding proves that Butte County compensates its professional employees at far lower rates than Sutter, Yuba and Tehama counties, and that we’d continue to fall behind other counties at the rate we’re going,” said PEA President and Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Bennett.

“We have a great group of people who work for the county and really care about the community,” she said. “Most of us live here and have a vested interest in keeping it a safe and healthy place to live. But if we can’t compete with other counties, many of which are smaller than Butte, we’re not going to be able to keep, retain and hire the best people for some of these jobs.

“We didn’t get the same deal as the other unions got because we chose to reject that initial offer. We didn’t feel it was fair considering we aren’t even competitive with surrounding counties, while at the same time there are department heads getting pretty nice salary increases of their own.”

Nakamura backers step forward City employees say changes are much needed ot everyone who works at N Chico’s City Hall is unhappy with the changes occurring there.

This week, three city employees contacted the CN&R in an effort to counter the bad press new City Manager Brian Nakamura has been getting since he began restructuring city departments.

Two of those employees, a man and a woman, came to the CN&R office for an interview; the third submitted her thoughts in writing.

They asked for anonymity to avoid retribution in the workplace, so we’ll call them James, Karen and Anne.

Their conclusion: Some people simply don’t like change. They’re accustomed to the way city government was managed in the past, like a big, happy family where, as James put it, “jobs were protected at all costs,” work demands were moderate and there was a good pension down the road.

Nakamura was brought in, they say, because that model wasn’t meeting the city’s needs at a time when the one-two punch of a state budget crisis and the national recession had depleted revenues to the point where, as James put it, “we didn’t have pencils to write with.”

Nakamura’s marching orders from the City Council were to restore the city’s financial health and make it solvent, and that’s what he’s tried to do, the employees say. As an outsider, he’s been able to see the city from a business-like perspective and make the changes needed to restore its health.

He’s getting a bad rap, they insist. As Anne put it in her written comments, “Between the recent articles and anonymous city employee comments, it sounds as if Brian is walking around City Hall, pointing his finger at people saying, ‘You’re fired!’”

Karen knew why they left, but both assumed there were good reasons for the separations.

Some city employees have actively tried to undermine Nakamura, they said, by publicly questioning why he met with certain people, canceling scheduled meetings without approval, counseling other employees to disobey his directives and sending anonymous complaints to the media.

Contrary to their accusations, Nakamura has been “very open from day one,” Karen said, adding that he was completely forthright at department-head meetings, explaining the challenges the city faced and how “right-sizing” would be needed to meet them.

James and Karen weren’t surprised when Nakamura announced that Mark Orme, who had been his assistant at his previous posting, in Hemet, would replace Rucker as assistant city manager. “He needs somebody he can absolutely trust,” Karen said, “not a team that is going to be undermining him.”

To these employees, the easy familiarity and feeling of security that had prevailed before had led to “a sense of entitlement and complacency,” as Karen put it. Many employees—though certainly not all—were in “no rush to get things done,” she explained.

Since Nakamura began shaking

things up, she continued, quite a few people have sharpened their work habits and become more productive. There’s a renewed interest in performing well from people who want to keep their jobs.

What’s happening at City Hall is similar to what happens when a floundering corporation gets a new CEO, James said. A shake-up is to be expected.

Mayor Mary Goloff, like most of the council members, agrees that Nakamura is taking the city in a positive direction. She too has heard from city employees who support him. “The hostility is from people who are resistant to change,” she said.

Historically, she said, the city has been run by people promoted from within who have strong relationships with city employees.

Being an outsider, Nakamura “brought a level of objectivity that enabled him to take the city in the right direction.”

It’s not easy. “I’m having a difficult time because so many of the city employees are people I care about. I care about their families.

But my obligation is to serve the city.”

She said she has no problem with Orme’s hiring, which she called a “non-issue.”

“Am I surprised Brian went after a person he knew? Not at all,” she said, adding that it was understandable that he would want to build his own team.

“I think a year from now we’re going to see that these changes have been good for Chico,” she concluded.

Bulgaria smiling Chicoan looks to hometown to help orphans hristina Stoimenova is enjoying each day Cer and to its fullest, taking in the beautiful weaththe convenience of everyday life in Chico, her hometown, but also a place she’s just visiting.

For the past nine years, Stoimenova has lived in Bulgaria, a small Eastern European country, and the poorest in the European Union. Life is harder in almost every way in the former communist nation, and it’s especially difficult for the children in orphanages, a segment of the population that has been terribly neglected by society and the corrupt country, where there are more children in orphanages than in any other country in the EU. Especially ostracized are those known as Roma children, the politically correct term for Gypsies, Stoimenova explained. Bulgarians generally are extremely prejudiced against Gypsy kids, whose ethnicity in recent years has been traced to India. The children are throwaways, growing up without the education and social skills needed to be successful in life.

“These kids don’t have a lot of hope,” she said.

But Stoimenova, whom Chicoans know as Christina Lando (daughter of former City Manager Tom Lando and Cindy Page), is working to change that.

And she’s back in the States temporarily to shed light on the plight of these forgotten children and to convince others to come to their aid.

Stoimenova, 36, and her husband, Spas, a native Bulgarian she met while working with orphans at a summer camp, are here raising funds to open a family-based center to house six to eight orphaned kids and provide them with the love, support and life skills necessary for them to lead healthy and productive lives as adults. There’s a great need for such family-like environs, as the institutions the orphan children are reared in provide only the most basic of needs, often just food and shelter, and where abuse is common.

Thus, when the children leave the relative safety of the orphanages when they turn 18, most are ill prepared. While the men oftentimes can eke out a living doing hard labor, the women don’t have as many options. In general, many of these young adults turn to crime, the women mostly selling their bodies, Stoimenova said.

“That only reinforces the stereotype,” she said.

Stoimenova described how Bulgarian orphanages are often overloaded with children, upward of 20 in some cases with just one person in a supervising role. Conversely, the family-based center the Stoimenovas are proposing to open would include two live-in parental figures, ideally a married couple, as well as a psychologist, social worker and tutors; basically everything needed for the children to transition to adulthood.

“We want it to be a model that can change people’s perception,” she said.

“That’s what can change society.”

The Stoimenovas are working with The Smile Bulgaria Foundation, in cooperation with Global Outreach International, a Christian nonprofit the couple have partnered with as missionaries, teaching everything from reading and writing English and Bulgarian to practical job skills such as sewing and computer literacy. They are working to raise about $65,000, which would sustain the center for a year. So far, they’ve raised about 10 percent of the funds. They plan to return to Bulgaria in August.

Originally, the Stoimenovas had planned to act as the house parents in a home, but the couple put that plan on hold and instead will oversee the facility because they are raising two young daughters, Joanna and Abigail, ages 4 and 22 months, respectively. When the girls grow up and leave home, Stoimenova says, then she and her husband would like to be the parental figures in a center.

“Hopefully by that time there won’t be a need,” she said.

DAVIS WATER PROJECT APPROVED

A recently passed measure that will allow Davis to draw water from the Sacramento River has already prompted a lawsuit from opponents.

Measure I passed with 55 percent of the vote on March 5, officially approving the $245 million Surface Water Project that will allow the communities of Davis and neighboring Woodland to supplement their water supply by drawing from the Sacramento River, according to The Sacramento Bee. But to pay for their share of the project— which will include a $110 million water-treatment plant in Woodland, a $13 million intake facility on the river, $60 million for water pipelines and $63.6 million for local facilities, land purchases and other costs—Davis residents are looking at a 42 percent increase in water rates in 2013-14.

Yolo Ratepayers for Affordable Public Utility Services has filed suit on the grounds that Davis is overcharging its residents and not paying for the municipality’s own water use.

KEYSTONE XL TOTALLY GREEN?

A recently released State Department report analyzing the potential impact of the Keystone XL pipeline project on climate change has drawn the ire of activist groups.

The 2,000-page assessment, released on March 1, suggested the pipeline would have little effect on the climate, claiming Canada’s oil sands will be developed with or without President Obama’s approval and U.S. oil consumption would continue as usual, according to The Washington Post.

Environmental groups have long maintained President Obama’s administration has a chance to send a strong message about moving away from fossil fuels by denying approval of the the pipeline, which would transport tarsands oil from Alberta, Canada, to the Texas Gulf Coast.

Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club, called the report “deeply flawed analysis.”

OBAMA MAKES EPA, DOE PICKS

President Obama has turned to an experienced hand to replace Lisa Jackson as U.S. Environmental Protection Agency administrator.

Gina McCarthy, currently the EPA’s assistant administrator in charge of air and radiation, will replace Jackson barring protest from the Senate, according to SFGate.com. Additionally, Ernest Moniz, a physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will replace Steven Chu at the U.S. Department of Energy. McCarthy played a key role in developing the tough national fuel standards implemented by the Obama administration during his first term.

Obama said McCarthy (pictured) and Moniz will be expected to invest in American energy and job creation and “doing everything that we can to combat the threat of climate change.

“They are going to be a great team,” he said. “And these are some of my top priorities going forward.”

survival as a result of overfishing, anyone watching his or her health—or concerned about the environment—might be tempted to forgo fish altogether.

Unlike so many other food choices— organic versus non-organic, fresh versus processed—deciding which fish to select requires a lot of specific knowledge before determining if it’s one to choose or to avoid. This includes needing to know how a fish was raised, or where it was caught, and the survival status of a particular species which changes as fish populations diminish and rebound. Thankfully, there are a number of new tools to help us become better fish buyers.

Wallet cards—such as the free, down-

loadable one put out by Shedd Aquarium in Chicago (see column note)—are probably the best-known consumer tool for making ecologically sound fish choices, with smartphone apps a close second. Aimed at maintaining or restoring diminishing fish stocks, these little cards have lofty goals.

Using simple color coding, wallet cards break choices into three categories: • Green: Best choice. Fish stocks are abundant and well-managed; fish is caught or farmed in responsible ways.

• Yellow: Good alternative. There are concerns with how the fish is caught or farmed, or known habitat destruction.

• Red: Avoid. Biomass needs time to recover or changes are needed in how the fish is farmed or caught.

• Overfishing: This happens when the biomass of a species becomes critically low or if a species is fished faster than it can reproduce to replenish stock. Haddock in the Northeast was for many years on the “avoid” (red) or “good alternative” (yellow) list depending on the catch method.

Better management beginning in 1995 ended overfishing, allowing the species to recover. Choose hook-and-line-caught haddock (green) when possible.

• Bycatch: This is the unintended discarded dead or dying fish and other marine life. Fishers are allowed nine pounds of discard to every one pound of intended catch—a plainly unsustainable ratio. Ask about bycatch reduction equipment infor-

Pacific halibut fishermen adopted fly-fishing streamers and catchshares to dramatically reduce the destruction of seabirds and turtles from their longlines, and to protect the fishery from overfishing. Look for wild-caught Alaskan halibut (green).

• Habitat destruction: This comes from destructive fishing methods such as bottom trawling— a practice that’s not unlike clearcutting a forest to catch a few deer.

Whole habitats are mowed down by large, heavy rolling bars paving the way for nets pulling up the ground-dwelling fish and everything else around it. Some trawlers have modified equipment to create less damage to the ocean floor.

The vast majority of imported

shrimp is farmed in environmentally destructive conditions. All shrimp imported in the U.S. from Thailand is farmed. Only about 25 percent comes from recirculating systems that do not release untreated waste into the environment. Choose U.S. wild-caught shrimp if you can get information about bycatch reduction or imported Thai shrimp if it is

• Aquaculture/farmed fish: At least half of the seafood we eat is aquaculture-raised. That is, farmed.

And some fish farms use more fish (such as anchovies) for feed than they produce. Pressure is mounting for internationally recognized, environmentally sound aquaculture standards.

Sushi eaters, are you aware of the fact that some of your favorite eats—such as yummy bluefin tuna—are being overfished, in large part due to the huge demand for sushi fish? Bun Lai, chef/owner of Miya’s Sushi in New Haven, Conn., knows this and is doing some inventive things about it.

The sustainability minded chef began adding seafood species viewed as invasive—such as whelks and periwinkles—to his restaurant’s menu. They are plentiful and tasty, and eating invasive species “help[s] to restore and regenerate habitats,” said Lai. “Today we eat very few species, like tuna. ... And because of it, we’re having a horrifically damaging impact on the living planet.”

So, do your homework on invasive West Coast species of crabs, shellfish and so on, and suggest that your favorite local sushi place get really creative and sustainable with its menu. Who knows?

Maybe an (invasive) Carcinus maenas crab roll will soon appear on its specials board. Exciting!

• Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing: Prior to 2010, IUU fishing accounted for 19 percent of world seafood catch, with an estimated worth of $13.5 billion. Some international discussions have begun to address improved traceability.

Bluefin tuna (“avoid”) is near collapse thanks to well-documented illegal fishing. Chilean seabass also comes from waters with high rates of illegal fishing. Avoid it altogether or choose only Marine Stewardship Council-certified Chilean seabass.

If you are nursing or pregnant, steer clear of large fish like tuna and swordfish, which have the highest quantities of pollutants like mercury and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), substances that can impair neurological development in infants.

And sustainability can also include economic and social goals.

Is the fishery from which your purchase comes managed in a way that sustains fish and local fishing communities? Many people choose to participate in community-supported fisheries programs to support their local economy and local families.

interactive Skype lecture—titled 21st Century Economics (or Down the Rabbit Hole)—given by author and Yale University graduate Charles Eisenstein to an audience of about 70 people assembled in Chico State’s Ruth Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall. The event was hosted by the university’s Peace Institute.

“In all areas, we’re reaching limits of growth,” Eisenstein said, referring to the push to obtain fossil fuels by such controversial means as fracking, Arctic drilling and the proposed Keystone XL pipeline as evidence that we are “running out of options. And [these options] are increasingly destructive to the environment and our civilization.”

A question-and-answer period following Eisenstein’s talk (he was Skyping from his home in Pennsylvania) focused first on the panel in attendance, consisting of moderator and former Chico State music professor Robert Bowman, Chico State economics professor Michael Perelman, local acupuncturist Adam Moes and progressive activist Dan Everhart, and next on questions from the audience.

Questions from a couple of panel members largely took the form of lengthy speeches on the topics that interested them, unfortunately, rather than succinct questions to Eisenstein. This had the effect of not giving Eisenstein a chance to weigh in much, and pushed the audience question period late into the evening. The Q-and-A period would have been more effective by limiting each panel member’s turn to perhaps a five-minute time period that included to-the-point questions to Eisenstein.

THE PULSE BLACKLISTING BPA HITS SNAG

Chemical companies have filed suit against Gov. Jerry Brown’s administration, asserting that bisphenol A (BPA) should not be included on California’s “blacklist.”

Filed by the American Chemistry Council, the suit claims that BPA—which is widely used in household plastics and aluminum cans—does not belong on the state Environmental Protection Agency’s list of harmful chemicals, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The suit suggests a 2008 report found no clear evidence that BPA poses serious health risks; however, Allan Hirsch, chief deputy director of the California EPA said the same report found “that there is clear evidence that bisphenol A causes developmental toxicity in laboratory animals.”

BPA’s addition to the toxins registry is of particular concern to manufacturers, as placement on the list can be a virtual death sentence for a chemical.

Government spending on Medicare and Medi-Cal in California has exceeded the total amount of the state’s general-fund budget, a report finds.

The report, released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, found that the federal and state governments spent $46 billion on Medi-Cal in 2011, while the federal government spent $59 billion on Medicare, a health program for the elderly, according to The Sacramento Bee. The BEA noted that California pays about $16 billion to Medi-Cal annually. Further, the report estimated that state spending on Medicare and Medi-Cal has doubled in the last 15 years, and is set to equal 10 percent of national gross domestic product by 2037.

The BEA also estimated that the federal government spent six times more on health programs than on unemployment benefits and 16 times more than on food stamps.

MIRACLE PILL ON THE WAY?

Recent findings regarding the life-extending chemical found in red wine and dark chocolate could have big implications for a burgeoning pharmaceutical niche.

Harvard geneticists David Sinclair and his colleagues, who have long researched how resveratrol—found in grapes, peanuts, cocoa and berries—combats the effects of obesity, diabetes and certain forms of cancer, claim to have discovered a link between the chemical and a group of enzymes called sirtuins, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Sinclair said resveratrol stimulates a sirtuin known as SIRT1, which “is like a Pac-Man that removes these proteins and tells other proteins to go out and repair the cell,” shedding light on the anti-aging properties of resveratrol. His previous research has already prompted a $30 million-a-year resveratrol supplement industry, but the new findings could pave the way for designing a “miracle pill” in the future.

In advance of Enloe Medical Center’s health-education event, local experts share health-maintenance tips

with patients about their health—one she heard from a nutritionist with the American Heart Association: Your body is your home and you can’t move out of it.

“Expanding on that,” she said, “I remind people how much we spend on our homes and our cars to keep them nice and to keep them running. Don’t our bodies deserve even more attention?”

In that spirit, Moore also appreciates the metaphor in the title of Enloe Medical Center’s community health event, Inspiring Healthy Lives: Build Your Wellness Toolkit, which will give attendees the opportunity to add tools to their metaphorical toolbox—or, put another way, to build what Moore calls “pillars of prevention.”

The Friday-afternoon (March 15) event includes a variety of activities: discussions, consultations and screenings. The goal, said Enloe Community Outreach Coordinator Deanna Reed, is for “members of our community to come meet with a variety of health professionals to learn about heart

disease and diabetes risk factors, as well as to participate in one-on-one screenings to help give them a baseline for their own health. With that information, we hope they will have at least a few new tools they can use in their own day-to-day lives to make smart choices when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle.”

But what about the people who aren’t able to attend? Moore and Heather Rushing, a clinical dietician at Enloe, shared some tips with the CN&R in order to help readers expand their personal-health toolkits.

• Anytime is a good time to stop smoking.

“This used to be something I had to talk

about all the time,” Moore said. “Unfortunately, it still is a problem, but much less of a problem than it used to be, certainly in California.”

Nonetheless, smoking cessation is her top tip.

“Within a year of not smoking,” she explained, “the risk of a heart attack goes down by about 90 percent, and in two years they’re back to that [risk level] of a non-smoker. Truly there is no organ system in the body that doesn’t respond to getting rid of nicotine.”

• Eat balanced meals with whole foods.

“Try to stay away from more-processed

foods, because they aren’t having a great effect on our health,” Rushing said. “The more-processed foods tend to go through the system quicker, so you tend to eat more, and that’s really affecting our weight and increases risk of diabetes.”

Fruits and vegetables should constitute the bulk of your grocery cart. Still, it is important not to overload on any one particular food group. When placing dinner items on your plate, make sure you have protein, carbohydrates and vegetables.

• Use measuring cups when preparing your meal.

Even if you’re eating a premade food, make sure you keep the portion-sized dietary information on the package in mind.

“Many people come in [to a dietician appointment] and say, ‘I’m eating healthy,’ but they’re eating too much,” Rushing said.

“Be aware, when you’re looking at a label, of the serving size and how much you’re actually eating.”

• If you see something in a TV commercial … eater, beware.

Both Moore and Rushing endorse this tip. The majority of edible products advertised on television are either processed foods or fast food.

“The food industry is trying to

sell products, so they’re going to try to make themselves look good,” Rushing said. Read labels and menu information carefully.

• Don’t miss meals.

Many people skip breakfast or don’t make time for lunch. Problem is, they’re likely to overeat when the next meal comes around.

“When eaten in combinations, the energy and glucose that come out of food will last for four or five hours,” Rushing said. “You’re looking for energy—that’s what you get from food.”

Feel free to snack if you get hungry between meals—just do so healthfully.

• Get out of your chair and get your heart pumping.

When it comes to exercise, Moore says, “there’s no age at which it’s not beneficial. I would say I’m probably talking to people about exercise now as much as I used to have to talk about smoking.”

Cardiovascular exercise is particularly important for people with high risk for heart disease. Consult with your doctor or physical therapist to find a regimen that’s right for you.

• Get enough sleep.

Stress is a double whammy— not only does it cause some people to overeat, but it also can interfere with sleep patterns. Moore points

to the benefits of sleep’s restorative properties. “When people are deprived of energy from lack of sleep, they’ll try to make up for it by eating more,” she explained.

• Incremental progress is still progress.

You don’t need to make drastic changes all at once. “If you’re talking about diet and exercise and weight loss,” Moore said, “it’s been shown over and over again through evidenced-based medicine that when people lose weight with dietary changes, slowly, they’re much more likely to keep it off— because they’re creating new habits.

“When I talk to people about exercise, I tell them, ‘Don’t do a marathon immediately.’ Push yourself a little bit more every time you go out.”

Taken as a whole, the tools above truly can help build pillars of prevention.

“For many years, I’ve called heart disease and stroke the diseases of the 20th—and now the 21st—century,” Moore said. “It’s amazing to people that in the middle of the 20th century, heart attacks were still, believe it or not, pretty rare. President Eisenhower was probably the first really wellknown person to have a heart attack; then it seemed like they were popping up all over.

Moore attributes the change to “a lot more smoking, a lot more sedentary lifestyles, all of the labor-saving devices, the beginning of fast food and unhealthy foods, and people not simply wearing off the calories [as they did] before when they were much more active.

“There are some people who have a perfectly healthy lifestyle and still have a heart attack. But if we look at the major proportion of people, all of those things can make a difference in reducing the risk of early onset of heart attack or stroke.” Ω

I

am a gun nut. I like the feel of a pistol in my hand or a rifle stock against my cheek. I like the smell of gun oil and cordite. I like the shiny bluing on a barrel, and the look of a case-hardened frame.

I like the sound when I cock the hammer of my .45 single-action, those crisp little clicks when I advance the cylinder. I like seeing a beer can flip into the air when I’ve made a snap shot that is true.

The memory of a well-placed shot I made decades ago can still replay itself in my mind, bringing with it thoughts of good friends and good times now gone.

When I was a boy, I yearned for a BB gun until I got one at age 8 or 9, then went on to dream of my first rifle, which I got when I was 12, a single-shot .22.

Over my lifetime I’ve owned or shot everything from muzzle-loading blackpowder guns, long and short, to more modern weapons in calibers from .22 to .54, and shotguns from .410 to 8 gauge. I currently own four handguns. That puts me two guns below the average gun owner in this country, where six guns per owner is the “norm.” In California, there are an estimated 40 million guns, slightly more than one gun for every single resident of the state, including babies and old people on respirators.

My brand of gun nuttiness still finds expression in fantasies I picked up as a kid, daydreams in which I stood with the valiant defenders of the Alamo. I’ve always resonated to that image of a heroic last stand, which may be why I, and lots of guys who share my affliction, identify with the last scenes in The Wild Bunch, when Warren Oates, Ben Johnson, Ernest Borgnine, and William Holden march toward their doom in a fight against overwhelming numbers. Unless you’re a little nuts your own self, there’s probably no way to explain the weirdness that made so many guys think that the way Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid went out guns a-blazing was about the coolest imaginable way to leave this planet.

So, for a gun nut like me, the prospect of attending the 37th Annual Chico Gun Show on a mid-February weekend was enticing.

There are far worse ways to spend time than looking over neat old guns laid out on folding tables for sale or trade. I’ve attended gun shows before, in Sacramento, Las Vegas, 18 CN&R March 14, 2013

Notes from a Reno and up in Washington State, but I’d never been to the Chico Gun Show before. In the current post-Sandy Hook environment, however, where gun owners are being whipped into hysteria with fears of gun confiscations, I worried that driving my pickup truck with its Obama bumper stickers to a gun-nut gathering might not be the most convivial way to spend part of a weekend.

Calls for strengthening regulations on gun shows have prompted wariness on the part of gun-show participants everywhere. And, though California law makes gun shows here much more tightly controlled than in other states, apprehension and antagonism are in

the air, the polarization that infuses lots of issues currently dividing people. On no issue, however, is the polarization greater than on the subject of gun control.

Two days before President Obama’s

second inaugural, avid supporters of the Second Amendment proclaimed a Gun Appreciation Day. On that day, five people were shot at gun shows across the nation. None of those accidental shootings happened in California, and no one died. Still, I was not keen on sustaining a flesh wound while prowling through the Chico Gun Show, fondling weaponry and chatting up a few big-bellied men selling various kinds of death-dealing appliances.

My apprehensions were eased when I contacted Rhonda Burns, a congenial woman who has been promoting the Chico Gun Show for 13 years. She assured me they have rigorous rules to prevent accidental discharge of any of the hundreds of guns on display and for sale each year.

“Our show is well secured,” she said, in

advance of the show. “The Department of Justice requires all firearms be checked and tagged with the owner ID at the door. California has strict seller restrictions and regulations.

All of the dealers who have firearms at their tables have their actions tied open so the actions can’t be engaged. We abide by all California and federal laws. We have security on the premises, and we’ve never had a problem.”

My anxieties thus calmed, I headed out to the gun show, where 70 vendors had assembled to sell their wares to the anticipated 3,000 attendees.

There was lots of interesting stuff for sale at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds on that recent Sunday morning, everything from powder horns for black powder to camouflagethemed earrings for that special someone.

There were more than a few camouflage outfits worn by potential buyers who didn’t look like they were heading out to a field anytime soon, making the camouflage pants and jackets distinctively ineffective for blending in with the gun show décor, but pretty good for

blending in with other clientele.

One vendor was selling wall plaques reading, “Due to the high price of ammo, I will not be able to provide the courtesy of a warning shot. Thank you for understanding.”

At another table, a guy was selling stun guns of various shapes and powers, some touted as protection against pit bull attack.

I stopped and talked to a dealer who had a nice Colt single-action “Peacemaker” under a sign that read: “Very Rare Colt, Never Owned By a Sheriff or Outlaw.” I liked the drollery of that note, and I liked the guy behind the table.

For those not in on this kind of joke, he was lampooning the tall tales that attach themselves to old guns. Spend some time around gun shows, and you’ll soon find out that there’s hardly a post Civil War-era firearm being traded that didn’t once belong to John Wesley Hardin or Billy the Kid. There was a large booth where you could buy a gun safe to store your gun collection, with specials on offer for gun show atten-

dees. At another stall, I bought a raffle ticket that might win me a rifle with a camo stock. Proceeds of the sale of the raffle tickets benefit programs to help keep Oroville kids off drugs.

I saw a little boy carrying what appeared to be a plastic cross-section of a zombie head and torso. A little farther down the aisle of vendors, I discovered where he’d gotten it. A couple of pretty Chico ladies were selling four different targets, cast in plastic to look like zombies. Since zombies are the “undead,” you couldn’t actually call the targets “lifelike,” though they were definitely human forms, albeit uglier than most liv-

ing humans.

“They’re single-use targets,” one of the young women informed me. Obviously, the targets were being marketed to target shooters who’ve spent time in darkened theaters watching actors like Woody Harrelson turn the cinematic walking dead into hamburger.

I stopped to say hello to Rhonda

Burns, pleased to put a face to the voice I’d heard on the phone. “We see this as a family event,” she told me. “We get lots of families. Lots of law enforcement people, in and out of uniform, show up. It’s in conjunction with the Butte County Sheriff’s Posse.”

Burns couldn’t have been friendlier, even though I’d made it clear that the piece I was writing was likely to include some things gun lovers might not like. “Buying and selling firearms the right way is a legal right,” she said, “and we support that.”

I spoke with her at the full bar being operated about midway through the line-up of vendor tables. I was a little surprised to see hard liquor being sold in this context. Even though there was security, and the guns going in and out of the place were all secured, it made me nervous. sation with a vendor who’d told me of a law enforcement friend of his who’d accidentally put a 9mm round through the palm of his hand while drunk. After five operations, that hand still isn’t entirely functional.

NRA propaganda was being dispensed at the Chico Rod and Gun Club table, and I heard an angry old man fulminating about what a travesty it was that Sen. Dianne Feinstein is reintroducing the assault-weapons ban that was law during the Clinton years, but eliminated during the early years of the Bush administration. Among the NRA broadsides being handed out were sheets bearing an unflattering picture of Feinstein and another with the headline: “Anti-Gun Democrats Again Working to Erode Second Amendment Rights in Sacramento.” That seemed redundant. There are lots of pro-gun Democrats, of course, but there are absolutely zero “anti-gun Republicans,” even though Ronald Reagan, the saint of Republicans everywhere, couldn’t find a reason why any civilian would need the kind of guns Feinstein’s legislation seeks to ban.

The Chico Rod and Gun Club has a 50-year history, and has maintained a shooting range in Upper Bidwell Park for most of that time. Donations to the club are tax-deductible, and the organization has bestowed its blessings on recently retired Congressman Wally Herger with the club’s “Defender of Freedom” award.

It’s entirely likely that Herger’s successor, Doug LaMalfa, will also earn that award from Chico gun lovers some day, in recognition of his service to the National Rifle Association’s

As I’d expected, there was some palpable paranoia at the Chico Gun Show on the second day of its two-day run. Gun dealers live in fear that new gun laws are going to run them out of business, and they tend to see enemies everywhere. It’s a little like the paranoia that attended parties I went to back in the ’60s where the experience of taking a hit on a joint was amped up by the suspicion that anyone not dressed as we were might be a narc. And some of these gun nuts are old hippies, with hair gone white and tied back, wearing the kinds of buckskin drag that Dennis Hopper affected in Easy Rider back in those purple hazy days of yore.

Then, too, my peace symbol belt buckle might have pegged me as an anti-NRA liberal in the minds of some gun sellers. That’s sorta what I am, of course, so the hostility I sensed may have just been the unease I brought in with me. But at least a couple of guys wearing NRA caps engaged in what writer Ishmael Reed once called “reckless eyeballing,” giving me that angry-faced once-over hardly ever seen from people looking to sell me something. I couldn’t help thinking of the lyrics to the old Buffalo Springfield (the name of a rifle, incidentally) song with the lines: “Paranoia strikes deep/ Into your heart if will creep/ There’s a man with a gun over there/ Telling me I’ve got to beware.”

Paranoia is one of the nuggets of nuttiness that afflict some American gun nuts, but there are other pathologies that attach themselves to an avidity for firearms. Some mental-health professionals think it’s clinical.

According to a psychiatrist I spoke with about this story, those most inclined to believe the Second Amendment was intended to protect us from our own government are “giving voice to their fears of facing the dangerous father from their childhoods. Guns give them added power to defeat him—also a form of identification with his frightening strength. In some ways, that’s a healthy adaptation, except it doesn’t work. There aren’t enough guns to erase the paranoid anxiety, that subconscious sense that government equals dad. Ironically, getting more guns PHOTO BY KYLE DELMAR

only increases the paranoia.”

When I was a young father, we moved

to a place on the outskirts of Quincy. Our next-door neighbor was a bullet-headed old man who’d moved from Southern California and gone into full survivalist mode. His house was littered with guns, and he was fond of discharging them at all hours of the day. He routinely blew crows out of the trees just for the hell of it. He was reckless with his guns, and it was scary living near him.

County code made it illegal to discharge firearms within a hundred yards of a roadway or a neighbor’s house. But laws are often not enforced, and when I filed a complaint, the sheriff’s office would not respond.

My neighbor turned out to have been the district attorney’s friend and campaign manager when that public servant had run for office. It will surprise no one to learn that both my neighbor and the D.A. were big NRA supporters. Though I was not able to get a response to my complaints from local law enforcement, the gunfire slacked off after my neighbor’s wife was injured when she knocked a loaded handgun off a bureau. The gun discharged, disfiguring her face.

At around that same time, I met Clarence, a saloonkeeper who kept three loaded bigcaliber handguns strategically placed under his long bar. There’s a quote I picked up somewhere that goes, “With his will, or against his will, a man reveals himself with every word,” and with every word I heard Clarence speak, he revealed how much he was aching to shoot someone. Clarence had a lot of free-floating anger in him. That’s hardly a rare quality among gun owners, or any other random group of Americans.

They were in the Butte County jail, charged with stockpiling explosive devices for a yetto-be revealed purpose. Agents from Homeland Security, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and other national, state and local agencies converged on the Murphy’s Melody Lane home on Feb. 14, two days

before the gun show, arresting the couple and confiscating a small arsenal of weapons that included assault rifles. What that couple was up to has yet to be revealed.

As I was leaving the gun show, I saw a couple of gun buyers wearing crucifixes prominently outside their shirts, and a seriously overweight guy with proclamations of faith tattooed on his forearms. As I backed out of my parking space in the Silver Dollar parking lot, I noted a truck with one of those “freedom isn’t free” bumper stickers. And that’s certainly true. The freedom to have so many guns and such a confusing morass of federal and state gun laws costs us some 30,000 lives a year, far more than all the men and women lost in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past 11 years.

When Vice President Joe Biden presented the recommendations his hastily assembled committee had come up with in response to the Sandy Hook massacre, the gun lobby exploded, firing off volley after volley of outrage at the “tyranny” of “King” Obama and his minions of freedom-denying anti-gun pansies. But the actual recommendations are far less draconian than NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre and other voices in the gun-nut corridor would have their followers believe.

What is being proposed is universal background checks on the buyers of guns, a law we already have here in California. There’s also a proposal for uniform gun registration in order to keep track of the guns that are out there, but Dudley Brown, a spokesman for the National Association for Gun Rights (a group just a smidgen to the right of the NRA), tells his followers that “gun registration is the first step toward confiscation.”

After the Sandy Hook massacre, Mike Huckabee, once a candidate for president, proclaimed: “It isn’t a lack of gun regulation that caused the Sandy Hook massacre. It is the fact that we’ve removed God from our schools.” Last year alone, however, there were 115 shootings in churches where God, presumably, had not been cast out.

Vying for the title of Bull Goose Loon of Gun Nuts, LaPierre, the guy who’s paid a million bucks a year to be the face of the NRA, thinks that “it’s not paranoia to buy a gun. It’s survival.”

In all my years of shooting, I’ve never fired a round in anger, never hurt anyone intentionally or accidentally, and I am grateful beyond words that no fellow human being’s blood is on my hands or on my conscience. I am grateful, too, that it has never been necessary to protect my home and family with a firearm. I’ve dispatched countless bottles and cans to that big waste dump in the sky. I spent lots of ammo and lots of time with Jim, my much-missed best friend who was with me during most of those days we shared, shooting and acting out scenes from our favorite westerns, playing cowboy even as we grew older and he, alas, was admitted to heaven after several brave years spent knockin’ at heaven’s door.

law abiding and harmless as Jim and I. Like us, they were grown men playing with dangerous toys. The arrested development found in all too many gun nuts finds expression in the childishly oversimplified idea that “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun.”

But good guys can change in an instant, becoming bad guys when drunk, when angered, when deranged. American children die every year because too many grownups simply won’t submit to sensible restrictions on the toys we can have. But I am one gun nut who would happily surrender his guns if doing so would allow a few more kids to grow up, find mates, have children of their own, and grow old watching the thousands of sunrises and sunsets denied to those 20 bulletriddled children who died last December at an elementary school back in Connecticut just a few days before Christmas. Ω

Cold, hard gun facts The numbers tell the story

ou can hear all kinds of dubious “facts” thrown around by people on both sides of the gun issue, but here are a few statistics that are beyond dispute.

• In the weeks since the Newtown massacre, the U.S. racked up more than 2,500 gun deaths, slightly more than 30 people a day lost to firearms. Nowhere on the planet do human beings who aren’t at war kill each other with firearms at that rate.

• For every person who dies in a gun homicide in Canada, six people die by gun violence in the United States.

• The USA accounts for just about 5 percent of the world’s population, but half of all the world’s guns in private hands are found here.

• It’s predicted that by 2015 the annual number of American deaths by guns will exceed the annual number of deaths in car accidents.

• Between 2006 and 2011, 680 American kids under 13 were killed by guns.

• Men commit homicide 10 times more often than women do.

• Two out of three women killed by their husbands are killed with guns.

• Assaults on women are a dozen times more likely to be fatal when a gun is involved than assaults with any other weapon.

• More than a million Americans have died of

The irony is that alarmingly few people Harlen Adams Theatre know about the organ at all. The 24-foot-tall, Chico State 20-feet-wide instrument with a gleaming pol898-6333 ished façade trimmed in gold leaf rests just out of plain sight backstage at the Harlen Adams Theatre, and in recent years makes only two annual public appearances—during the department’s holiday show in December, and at the annual Chico Bach Festival, which is happening this weekend. The event will kick off Friday, March 15, with a performance of Bach’s German Organ Mass on the Centennial.

“This was the lesser of many evils in terms of places on campus we could put it,” said Rothe, explaining that other proposed locations—Laxson Auditorium or center stage at Harlen Adams—proved too costly or otherwise problematic.

Rothe pulled off some miraculous magic tricks to have the organ built in the first place. When he came to Chico State to teach in 1968, Rothe—who started playing piano at age 4 and organ in his early teens—saw a need for a great organ in town, and began a decade-plus campaign to get one.

“I went over several years to talk to the university presidents, and they were all very nice, patted me on the head, gave me an orange and sent me away,” he explained.

convinced the university to put an organ builder on staff, hiring Munetaka Yokota in 1984. Over the next several years, Yokota and Rothe organized a volunteer workforce of faculty and students to build the organ themselves in what would be the first attempt to build an organ onsite since the Middle Ages.

As Rothe is a Bach devotee, he decided to model the organ after one in Dresden, Germany, built in the great composer’s era, with some changes made to incorporate other styles. The 2,400 tin-and-lead-alloy pipes for the organ’s 32 stops were handmade by volunteers in the university’s Art Department, and much of the work was centered in a shop at the University Farm. Weights were cast with lead from bullets collected at the old Bidwell Park shooting range. The keys were made from carved shin bones of university-raised cows, and the organ’s bench and pedal board were carved from wood from the Hooker Oak tree. Altogether, the cost of materials was well under $100,000; Rothe estimates it’s worth 10 times that today.

It’s fitting the organ, partly inspired by Bach’s

work, remains an integral part of the annual festival. This year, guest organist Angela Craft Cross will play one of the maestro’s most intricate compositions—a group of pieces collectively called Clavier-Übung III and more commonly known as the German Organ Mass.

Scholz—who took over as Bach Festival Director when Rothe retired—explained the piece’s original name translates to “Keyboard Practice” and is the only one of four ClavierÜbungs Bach wrote for organ, with the rest composed for harpsichord.

“Bach would write in various styles and compositional techniques that were very good for practice,” Scholz said. “So it’s basically him giving a set of practice pieces that also worked in terms of parts of the mass.

“Bach was pooh-poohed by his contemporaries for writing music that was way too difficult and not useable,” he said, explaining that one fugue in the work requires the organist to simultaneously play six different melodies, two with each hand and two with the feet. “Well, it’s not necessarily meant to be usable; it’s him showing off a little bit.” Ω

Of course, this being a Hollywood shootParadise Cinema 7. Rated R. ’em-up thriller, it’s not exactly a surprise who’s gunning for Victor’s boss (Terrence Howard).

The surprise is how tenderly director Niels Arden Oplev (of the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) bucks the Hollywood template Poor and focuses more on the cautious courtship between Victor and Beatrice. Both are shattered people, their facades held together by the Fair glue of becoming partners in revenge.

For those who want two hours of bullets, blood and extended CGI spectacle, this might Good be frustrating. Dead Man Down most assuredly delivers the goods with bursts of stylish mayhem and sweaty machismo, but here the mayhem serves the narrative, not the other way Very Good around. But Oplev also takes care to create vulnerability between his two leads, emphasized with an undertow of dread. One definitely gets Excellent the vibe that The City demands a blood sacri-

fice, and hope makes for a tasty entrée. But while Oplev’s portrait of Manhattan is not the postcard we’re accustomed to, he still manages to evoke the mystique.

While there are no amazing twists to be found here and the narrative is only a step above fundamental, there is still some unexpected subtext at work as well as the slow-burn pleasure of watching the director unpeel the layers of character motivation like an onion.

Rapace is unafraid to have her beauty painted over in a patchwork quilt of scar tissue and play Frankenstein to the neighborhood bullies, and Farrell delivers with his brooding shtick, but reinforced here with a definite air of determined hopelessness.

Granted, the climax takes a sudden detour into Hollywood absurdity, but by that point it’s a little too late in the game to derail the positives. Ω

A raunchy comedy starring Jason Batemen as a businessman who tracks down the deceptively wily woman (played by Melissa McCarthy) who has stolen his identity. Cinemark 14 and Feather River Cinemas. Rated. R.

Jack the Giant Slayer

We start in familiar territory, with a teenage Jack accidentally letting some magical beans loose into the soil, causing an enormous beanstalk to explode toward the sky. It connects to a dangerous land between Heaven and Earth, where angry giants dream of making human bones into afternoon snacks. The beanstalk has also carried Princess Isabelle into the giants’ world and, damsel in distress that she is, she needs saving! (For all its updating, the storyline doesn’t do much for feminism.) There are some fun moments from a strong ensemble of actors, and the fantasy land of the giants’ world looks pretty cool. All the basic fairytale themes are recycled here: saving the kingdom, true love overcoming class differences, and so on. It’s fun, but, just as the giants might, we see it all coming from a mile away. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13 —R.B.

Oz the Great and Powerful

It’s been 74 years since the release of The Wizard of Oz, and director Sam Raimi (Spiderman) and company are exploring its title character, pre-Dorothy and gang. Struggling magician/con-artist/womanizer Oscar “Oz” Diggs (James Franco) isn’t living up to his “great” potential, working the circus scene in Podunk, Kansas. So when a tornado sweeps him away to the land of Oz, where the inhabitants believe that he’s their awaited wizard, he goes with it. With the help of Glinda The Good Witch (a sappy Michelle Williams), this amateur hero attempts to save the citizens of Emerald City from the wicked sister witches (Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis). There’s plenty of visual oohing and ahhing to be had, but the fun stops there. The dialogue falls flat and the mediocre acting does little to save it. Keep traveling down that yellow brick road. Safe Haven

Swedish director Lasse Hallström (Chocolat, The Cider House Rules) helms this story of a young woman (Julianne Hough) who moves to a small town in North Carolina to hide from her past only to find that, after getting close to a local widower (Josh Duhamel), her past has followed her to the sticks. Cinemark 14. Rated PG-13.

Silver Linings Playbook

Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper) is returning to his blue-collar neighborhood in Philadelphia after a court-mandated stay in a mental institution. He’s determined to make amends for the violent incident that got him institutionalized in the first place—as well as separated from his wife and fired from his job as a schoolteacher. But making amends is not going to be easy, due in no small part to the fact that the family abode is a bit of a madhouse. The lively onscreen results for writer-director David O. Russell look like a romantic comedy of an unusually brash and farcical sort. And the heart of both the comedy and the drama becomes evident via Pat’s offbeat collision with a recently widowed Goth/punk gal named Tiffany (a terrific Jennifer Lawrence). Cinemark 14. Rated R —J.C.S.

Ends tonight, March 14. Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin in a geezer gangster comedy. Brash humor and a giddy impulsiveness give it unexpected charm. Noah Haidle’s script, his first for a feature-length film, feels like an amalgam of Goodfellas, Grumpy Old Men, The Bucket List and whatever aging gunfighter movies you’d care to name. Nevertheless, the comic lines he’s written for Pacino and company have a pleasing wallop to them, and director Fisher Stevens does a brisk and skillful job of ushering the cast through the story’s rambunctious zigzags between half-serious action and rowdy farce. Pacino is a scruffy delight. Walken has fewer laugh lines, but he’s superb as a guy who listens and thinks a lot and doesn’t have to say much to get his point, comic or not, across. Pageant Theatre. Rated R —J.C.S.

Warm Bodies

Here we have America a few years after the rise of the dead and the ensuing fall of the living. The few folks who huddle behind a walled-off sector of the city don’t care about what brought about the plague, because they are too busy staying alive. The dead don’t care, because they’re dead. Well, aside from one zombie who we come to know as “R” (Nicholas Hoult) whose heart begins to flutter when he spies a hottie breather named Julie (Teresa Palmer). He tries the ever-reliable approach to stealing a woman’s heart of eating the brains of her boyfriend, which, um, gives R the dude’s memories and kick starts his heart. Ultimately, Warm Bodies delivers by balancing a sweet li’l love story while maintaining the underlying grottiness of the zombie premise. Cinemark 14. Rated. PG-13 —C.B.

Barleywines abound as season winds down

I classic refreshment of a summer day, the ideal brew of a cold winter evening should be something at the f a light and zesty lager, cold as ice, is the

opposite end of the beer spectrum. Sure enough, January, February and March are traditionally the months when breweries by Alastair release what might be the king of Bland craft beers—the barleywine.

This rich and delicious style, born long ago in Britain, is usually honey- to amber-colored, often quite sweet, and approaches wine levels of alcohol (hence the name).

Sierra Nevada’s Bigfoot barleywine contains more than 9 percent alcohol by volume, and some barleywines—especially modern American ones—go as high as 15 percent or more.

Traditional British barleywines are softer on the hops and heavier on the candy and caramel notes.

Anchor’s Old Foghorn—one of the first barleywines brewed in the United States, in 1975—was modeled after British beers encountered by the San Francisco brewery’s owners as they toured England’s pub country, seeking brewing inspiration. Old Foghorn, on the low end of the scale at 9 percent alcohol by volume, has retained its gentlemanly composure even through the American extreme brewing craze of the past decade.

Elsewhere, American barleywines have become a recognized style, bigger, stronger, and bitterer than the original English renditions. Dogfish Head in Delaware, for example, makes a ferocious beast called Olde School, which is brewed with dates and figs and weighs in at 15 percent ABV. Many others measure 12 percent and 13 percent, and increasingly popular among brewers is to age barleywines prior to bottling in wooden barrels that once contained whiskey, rum or wine. Bigfoot—which has touched such boozy wood on a few experimental occasions—is one of most extreme of American-style barleywines. The beer is famously bitter, so aggressively hopped that it could just as well be categorized as a double IPA. But whereas IPAs are best consumed fresh from the tanks, barleywines originated as beers for the cellar, to last through the cold months. They served as a source of calories for people for whom solid food may not have been a guaranteed asset in the winter.

Brewers quickly discovered that barleywines, better than nearly any other beer style, can endure the passage of months—and years—with grace. That is, rather than grow skunky or sour like a forgotten lager in the basement, barleywines mature and grow. Their easy-drinking sweetness of youth turns thick and chewy, with elderly specimens exhibiting wonderful flavors of caramel, vanilla, dried figs, and fudge. The presence of the word “old” in the names of so many current barleywines reflects the tradition of keeping these beers in the cellar.

With bitterly hopped barleywines like Bigfoot, the changes brought about by time are especially dramatic: the hops fade quickly as the malt character develops. Tastings of aged Bigfoot are popular among many beer aficionados, who may sample several vintages side by side to study like scientists the dramatically different stages of maturity.

Barleywines can be expensive—$6 to $10 or more for a 22-ounce bottle—and they are always precious.

Like acclaimed wines, barleywines may be treated with great reverence, and cherished by the sip through an evening—especially when it’s cold out. Popular barleywine marketing imagery portrays cabin-bound old-timers sipping mahogany brown beer from tulipshaped snifters by a roaring log fire, as snowdrifts pile high outside. (No: a barleywine is not for drinking on the lawnmower.) Barleywines are opened on special occasions, perhaps with special people. But whosoever you may be hosting the night you open that longawaited barleywine, the beer—at least for a few moments—becomes the guest of honor.

What barleywines to try? Still very much in season, there are many to be found currently on retail shelves, including Lagunitas’s Olde GnarlyWine, FiftyFifty’s Old Conundrum, Rogue’s Old Crustacean and 21st Amendment’s Lower De Boom. Coming later in March is a collaborative barleywine made by Deschutes, Rogue, and North Coast brewing companies (as part of Deschutes’ Class of ’88 series). Meanwhile, Anchor’s Old Foghorn and Sierra Nevada’s Bigfoot are still around as well—but as spring and summer warm up the days ahead, stash unused bottles of barleywine in a cool place until next winter.

They’ll be waiting. Ω

The Rough Guide to Cumbia

Adam Green & Binki Shapiro Adam Green & Binki Shapiro New Rounder For most indie-pop fans, the name Adam Green might not ring any bells initially, until the reminder: “You know, the guy from The Moldy Peaches.” And where The Moldy Peaches were simply a lo-fi good time, Green the solo artist is a more refined good time.

His lyricism is irreverently poetic, capable of creating a range of moods, while the songwriting itself quite often achieves perfection with its brevity. Green’s latest work with sultry songstress Binki Shapiro (formerly of Little Joy) only enhances the above praise, as the two channel a duet approach fantastically reminiscent of Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra. Their 10-song, self-titled effort evokes both romantic playfulness and longing, drawing in listeners with a pair of voices that seem bonded by natural adhesive. “Pity Love” is the album’s definitive track, a flawless cut of bouncy, melancholy pop that hooks you with the verse: “My heart is everywhere, clapping out like thunder/ everybody, everybody’s cheating on each other.” The album’s succinctness—clocking in at 28 minutes total—is one of its biggest strengths; every brief gem, from “Just To Make Me Feel Good” to “Pleasantries,” leaves you wanting even more.

Tomasz Stanko New York Quartet ECM The odds were good that I was going to like this double album even before the first note sounded. It’s named in honor of my favorite poet, Wislawa Szymborksa, the Polish writer who died last year. Any musician who shares my love of Szymborska is bound to be running his or her soul train on tracks very much like mine, and Stanko most assuredly is. The 70-year-old Stanko was born in Poland, but his bassist, Thomas Morgan, is less than half his age, and was born in Hayward. The exquisitely sensitive pianist David Virelles was born in Cuba in 1983 (Virelles also contributed to the lovely The Sirens album by Chris Potter). Gerald Cleaver, the drummer, was born in Detroit in the early ’60s. Despite the differences in age and places of birth, these four guys are utterly in tune with one another, as tightly knit as ensemble players ever get. Of the connection between the poet and the songs, Stanko writes in the liner notes: “The pieces ‘Faces’ and ‘A Shaggy Vandal’ take their cue from Szymborska’s poem, ‘Thoughts That Visit Me on Busy Streets,’ a wry meditation on old and new forms.” This is jazz of a very high caliber, and if it serves to encourage the listener to go out and read Szymborska, so much the better.

PAC 135 For the opening-night performChico State ance of the theater department’s first 898-6333 production of the spring semester, director William Johnson and his Chico State cast and crew surround that promising plot device with a good measure of energy and entertaining elements (including some great music), but unfortunately it’s mostly window dressing for what turned out to be largely a one-note performance; that one note being that Hamlet was a jerk and Ophelia is (sort of) not having it anymore. There’s really not much else to take away from the avant-garde semimusical.

Underlining that one note was the play’s dialogue, which was a combination of Shakespeare-like heightened language with a touch of hillbilly vernacular and construction. Either of those elements has the potential to be tiresome in a contemporary play, but blending them together and having the players deliver the result with vaguely Southern accents just didn’t work.

The actors did their best with it, heightening their voices to meet the theatrical nature of the language (but that just might’ve made things worse).

Joining Ophelia and Hamlet (back in the form of a leather-clad ruffian named Rude Boy) are other names from the past: Gertrude (as a whorehouse madam) and Horatio, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (who go by H,

R and G, respectively). And the story here is mostly just a series of verbal fisticuffs among various groupings of the characters strung together, the only narrative being Ophelia’s changing opinion of Rude Boy as they go back and forth and back and done.

Erin Duffey as Ophelia was most successful at rising above the noise. She had a great voice (both spoken and in song) and played the part as sort of a feral wolf-girl found in the wilderness, full of lust and anger, and was fun to watch as she made her way to and through Rude Boy with energy and courage.

While Ophelia got to branch out of her previous character, the once-complex Hamlet’s punishment seems to be that he be reduced to a blunt caricature.

Murphy Mayer does fine in the role, but since rude is all he can be, well …

Nonetheless, there are several parts of the production to recommend. The music was fantastic. Songwriter Marcel Daguerre created a range of sounds with his original numbers (set to the playwright’s lyrics)— from beautiful, harmony-rich folk tunes to dark-sounding rock songs—that provided much of the play’s emotional impact. Local folk group The Railflowers (with help in spots from guitarist Dave Elke, violinist Joel Quivey and Daguerre on bass and drums) supplied the live soundtrack, and their airy, sweet-voiced version of Appalachian folk was pitch perfect.

And the singing by the cast matched up beautifully with what The Railflowers were doing offstage. Duffey’s rich voice was especially impressive, and the six women in the Chorus of Ophelias lived up to their name with flawless, goosebump-inducing accompaniment.

Scenic designer Daniel Schindler and crew also created a nice, simple scene with the stage at the center of the room being formed out of what looked like a giant boulder surrounded by a moat of a river that would reveal different characteristics with each lighting change. And keeping with the surreal nature of the play, hanging from the ceiling were trees with roots growing down below the lights and casting creepy shadows across the stage.

In the end, despite the moments of creativity and many inspired choices for this production, it was hard to get past the play’s rough delivery and the fact that it Ω didn’t end up anywhere interesting.

The short telephone interview went on to explain that, despite his father’s being out of the picture for so long, the two of them did eventually develop a relationship, and Garcia-Sarnoff (who is now a father himself) was even at the hospital when his father died a couple of years ago. CENTURY IN THE MAKING The first bit of news for the Chico Women’s Club is that the 102-year-old Steinway grand piano that has been in the hall for 80 years has just returned from its $40,000 restoration. The impressive instrument made its public debut last weekend during the 10 Chico Silent Film Festival, and according to Women’s Club member Sandy Goulart everyone in attendance raved about its beautiful sound.

The second bit of Chico Women’s Club news is that the longstanding community group is turning 100. In October of 1913, a group of 29 women (including Chico founding mother Annie Bidwell) started the Chico Art Club (which it was called until changing to its current name in 1960), and on Sept. 8 of this year the women’s group will be hosting a party in celebration of 100 years of serving Chico. Leading up to that occasion, they will be producing a series of Centennial Steinway concerts to recoup funds spent on the piano. The Ebony & Ivory campaign will feature one concert per month leading up to the anniversary event—each with a different musical theme (jazz, folk/bluegrass, classical, etc.)—with a big gala concert/ progressive dinner capping it all off on Sept. 27. maker Hal Roach worked on scripts with his team of writers, he sometimes employed an unusual strategy to overcome writer’s block. He’d bring in a “Wildie” to join them at the conference table. They’d engage him in conversation about the story they were working on, and he would provide unexpected ideas that opened their minds to new possibilities.

Alexander Fleming launched a medical revolution. He developed the world’s first antibiotic, penicillin, making it possible to cure a host of maladies caused by hostile bacteria. His discovery was a lucky fluke that happened only because he left his laboratory a mess when he went on vacation.

theory of the “butterfly effect” proposes that a butterfly flapping its wings in China may ultimately impact the weather in New York. Here’s how the writer Richard Bernstein explains it: “Very slight, nearly infinitesimal variations and the enormous multiplicity of interacting variables produce big differences in the end.” That’s why, he says, “the world is just too complicated to be predictable.” I find this a tremendously liberating idea. It suggests that every little thing you do sends out ripples of influence that help shape the kind of world you live in.

football quarterback Joe Ayoob holds the world’s record for throwing a paper airplane the longest distance. After it left his hand, the delicate craft traveled more than 226 feet. Word Play is about accessibility to anyone. I want anybody who’s interested in performing to feel comfortable and safe … I want people to be able to come and perform and to witness poetry as well. I try to make it available to anyone who wants to get up [and perform].

I just want people to treat it with respect. I have no limits as to who gets up there and participates, as long as it’s done out of respect.

How did the first Word Play go?

The first one was great because it was a young crowd combined with some of the older crowd, and was a great atmosphere of acceptance. It’s about the words, not any specific form of poetry, and it doesn’t have to be poetry. It could be a story or comedy. It’s just about you getting up and expressing words that you enjoy and love.

What’s your background with words?

When I was 18, I first performed a poem at Has Beans’ open mic. Then I steadily got involved

with the slam scene around here. I moved to Humboldt when I was 20 to attend Humboldt State, and I became involved with the slam team there. We would host the traveling top slam poets, so I got to meet some really successful poets. Through that, I became involved in the production aspect too. I got to be involved in this wonderful community of poets who all supported one another.

What does it cost to attend this event?

A distinction I’d like to make is that [Word Play] is not about making money. I am charging only a dollar, for the café. I personally make nothing, and I’m not interested in money.

I just want people to come. It’s really about the community aspect. That’s my dream for it at least. I think that’s an important distinction, because I’ve heard that many people feel they shouldn’t have to pay to hear poetry or to perform poetry.

Work day I start with an hour of meditation, and I wash yesterday’s dishes. Then I make a cup of something, Morning Thunder or Roastaroma usually, sometimes coffee for a harder kick.

I feel obligated to go through my email. There’s hardly ever anything worthwhile in my inbox, save daily quotations from Abraham-Hicks and Living Compassion. Still, I’ve got to see if the British High Commission for Nigeria has finally cut me a check for the $8 million promised me by a former government official who wants only to rid himself of the burden of his former boss’s fortune.

I’ve gotten offers and proposals from Mrs. Farida Waziri, Abel Ubeku, Ben Ayodele, Mrs. Rose Wood, Khyati Desai, John McGowan, Mr. James Nana, Mr. Paul Smith, Dr. Omar Bin Suleiman, and Robert S. Mueller, who works for the FBI. More than once someone overseas named Porter has died intestate, and I’ve been picked to inherit all of his money. I haven’t gotten it yet, but when the cash shakes loose I don’t want to miss out, so I keep checking my email.

If no money has fallen out of the sky, I go through

my notes. I use a digital recorder, so my notes are sound files. Now and then listening to notes gives me a useful idea. I usually know when I record a note whether I can get a column out of it, though I may have to listen a second or third time to know what’s there.

I used to read the news headlines for fodder, though not anymore. Politics and commerce—mostly the same thing—are easy subjects in that I have plenty to say about what’s going on. When I write about easy targets, though, I end up thinking about them as targets, and I no longer think constant attack is helpful to me or the things I care about.

Janice was never comfortable with my political writing, and I’ve come to understand why. In desperation I can fall into my old habits and whip out a rant that’ll fill my box on the back page, but when I do, although I can make me laugh—which is always satisfying—it feels like cheating and a waste of time.

I just checked my email, and it seems that a Chris Brunelle, who goes so far as to address me as “Dear,” has a “package box” for me containing $1.5 million and has been waiting for some time for me to claim it.

All I have to do is pay the $195 “security keeping fee” and I’m good to go. Finally.
