these are a few of our

We share the things we are obsessed with this holiday

Ornaments Department store Christmas trees are tasteful and elegant displays of holiday coordination and cheer. Our tree looks nothing like that. Our tree is an ad hoc conglomeration of ornaments: Handmade gifts from friends and family hang next to plastic cartoon characters and crystal snowflakes. Each year we add to our collection, carefully choosing something that reflects the past year — a feathery bird to commemorate leaving the nest or a dollar ornament to celebrate starting a new job. Sometimes though, we just pick something pretty, which is how we ended up with a swarm of Christmas jellyfish on our tree. Anne Stokes

Snow It’s not something we get here in Sacramento, but if you venture out of town this season, take a day to enjoy the snow. There is nothing quite like the serene feeling you get from the sparkling glow of a fresh, pristine blanket. Of course, we all know the best part of untouched snow is kicking through that powder, feeling the crunch under your feet, and making your mark by blasting down a hill on a toboggan or falling onto your back to make snow angels. As a former country mouse, experiencing the peaceful magic of snow — and disturbing it like a rambunctious little kid — is always on my list of holiday to-dos. Kate Gonzales

My Favorite Things by

Rob Stewart executive producer & host of “Rob on the Road”

What is your favorite holiday memory? The year that I got every single character from “Star Wars.” I was a “Star Wars” geek. But in all seriousness, any time I get to spend with my family. Those are the holiday treasures that last forever.

What is your favorite holiday movie? “Miracle on 34th Street.”

Boyz II Men ChrIstMas Pandora statIon

My Boyz II Men Christmas Pandora station was created in equal parts irony and nostalgia. While merrily (read: drunkenly) decorating my tree, I grew tired of Bing, Frank and Judy and wanted something a bit more contemporary, but not Josh Groban or Michael Bublé contemporary. I thought back to the Christmas music I listened to as a kid in the '90s, and the Boyz II Men Christmas station was born! Now, sounds of Mariah and Whitney break up the stream of holiday standards. But if you want the joy of the uninterrupted 1993 Boyz II Men album, “Holiday Interpretations,” you can pick it up at Dimple Records for $2.99. What a steal! Plus, you can avoid that awkward moment when Chris Brown pops in to sing “Try a Little Tenderness.” KG

What is your favorite local holiday destination? I love walking the grounds of the California State Capitol because they do such a great job bringing the holidays to life.

What is your favorite holiday cookie? Probably just a good old-fashioned gingersnap, fresh-made. And we do all our gingersnaps with mascarpone cheese on top.

What is your favorite holiday tradition? My favorite holiday tradition is the fact that we always do a Christmas goose instead of turkeys or ham or whatever people usually do. We do a really old-fashioned dinner.

Which wine pairs best with the goose dinner?

Either a riesling for a white wine or a pinot noir for a red wine. For vegetarian [meals], they can’t go wrong with a savignon blanc, and we recommend our barbera, or anyone’s barbera — a classic Italian red wine.

Rankin and Bass caRtoons Before slick digital animation sucked the soul out of Saturday mornings, there was Rankin and Bass. Their stop-motion cartoons are still the gold standard of kids’ TV programming, with feel-good stories of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey and the adversarial Miser brothers. Honestly, it’s not officially Christmastime until Burl Ives sings. In our house, it’s still a family holiday tradition to curl up together and sing along as Rankin and Bass’ “animagic brings our favorite Christmas carols to life. While not exactly “Netflix and chill material, it’s still worth at least a holiday snuggle. AS

What is your favorite holiday tradition? I would say Christmas caroling with my family in our neighborhood every year with lampshades on our heads. My family had a few hot toddies. It stuck one year.

What is your favorite holiday movie? “It’s a Wonderful Life. I cry every year!

What is your favorite local holiday destination? In front of the fire having a glass of wine with friends in Lake Tahoe. That’s the best place to relax to me.

escaping holidays the

Ideally, the holidays are a time for family, cheer and good will toward men. Practically, however, the holidays can test your stress-management skills. Whether you have the time to run away for the weekend or just enough time to disappear for a few hours, sometimes we need a holiday from the holidays. Locally, you can spend a few hours and try your hand at blackjack, Texas Hold ’em, or baccarat at Rancho’s Club Casino, where owner Rubin Marquez’s homemade chili verde is a Christmas Eve tradition. If you need to get away, the Napa River Inn is a romantic place to eat, drink, treat yourself to a spa day and shop (for yourself) until you drop. “We’re a great way to celebrate not having to work too hard!” says the Napa River Inn’s Melodie Hilton. “One of the amenities included in your room price is breakfast in bed. We’ll give you a menu and you can hang it on your door at night and have breakfast delivered to your room.” AS

My Favorite Things by

Maj. Ivan Wild Del Oro Divisional Commander, The Salvation Army

Do you have a favorite holiday food? I grew up in an English family, so we had what’s called a Christmas log. It’s like a yule log but chocolate. It’s very English.

Do you have a favorite holiday song? I would say “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem” because I think it captures the story of Christmas, of bringing good will and goodness to all mankind. The reason that Christ came was for the benefit of others. Christmas is really about giving to others.

Stay clear of the mall, RSVP ”no“ to that Christmas party, because you’re going to escape the stress of the holidays with a weekend away at the Napa River Inn. Photos by Michele chaPlow

What is your favorite way to volunteer or give back year-round? I ring bells at the red kettles to help out in that way, but for me during the rest of the year, I do like to give back to the community. I coach soccer, I like to get involved in community affairs, I like to get involved in school functions and those types of things. I like to give to anything community-related.

Gifting Tickets When you don’t want a gift as impersonal as a gift card but don’t want to risk guesstimating what size they wear, we love giving tickets as gifts. From a night out at the California Musical Theatre’s “The Book of Mormon” to one of the last Kings home games at Sleep Train Arena, there are a vast array of choices that make such a gift a thoughtful one. “When you give tickets as a gift, especially if you go with them, you’re spending two or three hours of your time with that person,” says Joe Morgan, writer and editor at Sac Sports Nation, where sports fans can win local game tickets all year long. "If Santa could bring me anything, it would be King’s playoff tickets. Santa might have to get involved for that to happen, but we sure hope it does.” AS

Christmas light bingo

holiday flavors without thE CaloriEs

Instead of merely oohing and aahing over our neighborhood’s creative holiday lights, we like to engage in friendly (read: competitive) games of Christmas light bingo. We make sure to have a few easy picks, like Rudolph or Santa, as well as a few wild cards thrown in for good measure. Winners reserve in-your-face bragging rights until the next game. If your part of town is lacking in holiday spirit, there are several neighborhoods that keep electric companies in the black. Some of our favorites include the Land Park area, Pebble Creek Drive in Rocklin and Dovewood Court in Orangevale. AS

We all have that certain co-worker whose holiday diet plan is to feed everyone else cookies, cakes and fudge until they’re the skinniest one in the office. Sometimes the best way to deal with such temptation is to give in to it, in a manner of speaking. At Planet of the Vapes, you can find all sorts of holiday flavors to indulge in, from the Elegant Beast’s berry and cookie crumble flavored Archibald Lennox to Vape Fu’s Cool Karma, a peppermint-candyflavored mix of cool mint and menthol. And don’t miss their 12 Days of Christmas countdown, with different goodies on sale each day. AS

ggnog in its many forms is good for any occasion: Eggnog latte for your morning commute, eggnog candles to spread this joyful yuletide scent, soy eggnog for vegans and eggnog a la Martha Stewart to loosen up guests at your holiday party. Sacramento’s venerable ice cream shop, Vic’s Ice Cream on Riverside, even has an eggnog flavor available by the scoop or pint through the end of December. “It’s thick and creamy. There’s a little bit of spice with the nutmeg, but it’s definitely sweet,” says Vic’s manager Dave Gilson. “We bring in quite a few holiday flavors, but that is one of our more popular [ones].” The demand for all things eggnog at our house is proportionate to the short duration of time it’s available in stores. Half-gallons have been known to disappear in a matter of hours, leaving sad, empty cartons behind as evidence. Some family members have even taken to hiding a secret nog stash just so they don’t have to share their eggy delicacy. AS

My favorite dish that she handed down to me, which I’ve tweaked a little bit and is actually on our menu here at 3 Fires Lounge, is her chicken, bacon, Gouda mac and cheese. It’s to die for.

what is your favorite holiday memory? My favorite memories are [holidays] with my grandmother. My grandmother was the best chef I’ve ever known. She would make sweet potato pies and biscuits from scratch. When I was really young, I thought it was magic that she could make these things.

do you have a favorite holiday cookie? Snickerdoodles. I eat them year-round. It’s my favorite cookie for life.

My Favorite Things by

Devin Yamanaka afternoon news host, Capital Public Radio

What is your favorite public radio holiday story? I love David Sedaris’ readings of his “Santaland Diaries.” His impression of Billie Holiday is spot-on and my favorite part.

What is your favorite holiday cookie? Sugar cookie with sprinkles. Not the long, stick-like sprinkles, the tiny red and green ones. And no need to get frosting involved. Just bake the sprinkles right into the cookie. That’s better because they won’t fall off and get all over the place when you’re trying to eat. I’ve thought about this.

What is your favorite holiday song? “Skating” from the soundtrack to “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” I’m not a huge fan of holiday music, but that’s one of the few I seek out each season.

Cozy gear

Ham

Summer is one of my favorite seasons. At a certain point, however, my seasonal circadian rhythm gets fed up with 100-degree heat waves and starts to crave the sound of raindrops on the roof, the taste of hearty stews and bundling up in cozy layers. According to Freestyle Clothing Exchange owner Elizabeth Kelley, faux fur is the best of both worlds: cozy AND fashionable! “My passion right now is faux fur. It’s great! It’s luxurious, it’s cute, fun, looks great during the day and at night, so you can’t go wrong with that,” she says. “I think it’s fun for this time of year, especially since it’s getting cold and we’re finally getting a winter!” AS

Nothing marks the season like stuffing yourself silly during a holiday feast. Some enjoy prime rib, the Grinch had roast beast, but the more traditional of us enjoy the best main course of all — a warm, spiral ham sticky with honey glaze. While some may petition for a holiday turkey, that bird’s day has long passed by late December. From the smell of ham slowly filling up the house to that first juicy bite, it’s a staple I simply refuse to give up (you hearing me, Mom?). And the leftovers? Ham is good for breakfast, lunch AND dinner for days! KG

Frumpy is fine for snuggling up at home, but the holidays are a chance to dress to the nines when out at all those holiday parties. I’m all about bundling up in fun tights, boots, scarves, gloves and long jackets. It’s my most elegant season, which basically means I make every attempt to dress like Audrey Hepburn. Love Junky Boutique owner Kendra Holman says a popular holiday trend for the ladies is the classic form-fitting, black lace dress. Yes, please! Burgundy and a bit of bling are also popular in her store around the holidays. When you have the perfect outfit picked, why not pamper yourself with grooming at Sleek Wax Bar and a new ’do or candy-cane-inspired nails from Glam Hair & Nail Salon? You’ll be set to wine and dine all holiday season. KG

CroCk-pot Between parties, dinners and shopping, the holidays can be one of the busiest times of year. To survive the stress, I try to do little things to treat myself well. Enter the Crock-Pot. Crock-Pot cooking is one of the simplest and cheapest ways

to spoil myself with a delicious meal (and all the wonderful smells!) after running around all day. Soups, stews, chicken pot pie and even desserts — my day-to-day menu is filled with soul-warming goodness that I hardly lift a finger to make. Plus, when I share with friends and co-workers, they think I’m a terrific cook thanks to my secret culinary weapon. KG

What is your favorite holiday memory? Opening presents with my dad. I would always ask for dolls or something pretty. There was one doll, she was a fashion doll, and it’s kind of common now, but it was really special back then to get a doll with all these purses and outfits.

My favorite dish that I like to make is a sweet potato recipe that one of my sisters gave to me. You could not like sweet potatoes, but you’d eat this. It’s that good.

What is your favorite winter clothing item? My favorite cool weather item is something faux-fur-lined. It could be a sweater, a vest, or anything. It just gives you that extra warmth and it looks festive because of the faux fur on it.

Visiting family This one is cliché, but for good reason. The holidays are a great reason to put away your phones and spend quality time with family. These days, my family’s celebrations are predictable. Dinner, gift exchange, dog snuggles and naps and, if mom gets her way, a game of croquet. Each Christmas as a kid, my family would travel to southern California to visit my grandma and a large cast of

aunts, uncles and cousins. My aunts would pack into the kitchen to prepare dozens of tamales while kids played barefoot outside, trying to reach sweet fruit from the loquat tree. Since then my grandma has passed away, so those are memories I cherish. This season, embrace the cliché and make some room for quality family time. KG

Growing up with a “Texican” for a stepdad, tamales were in season during the holidays. It’s an annual tradition for the women of the Garcia clan to gather and produce enough neatly wrapped packets of masa and shredded pork to keep the whole family stocked through January. Luckily, I get to reap the benefits of tamalemaking day, knowing this bounty only comes but once a year. Flaky, flavorful meat ensconced in tender masa ... if you’re looking for a better reason to pop open a bottle of Corona this month, there is none. For those unfortunate souls without a tamale connection this season, head over to Cielito Lindo Mexican Gastronomy in East Sac. Chef Ramiro’s tamales are here, with pork, chicken and rajas (poblano pepper) options available now through Christmas. Michelle Carl
