Local Scene Read off your library fines!: Now through Aug. 19: This year the Read Off Your Fines campaign will be held in conjunction with the Summer Reading Program at Yolo County’s Arthur F. Turner Community Library, located at 1212 Merkley Avenue in West Sacramento. Participants will be able to deduct $1 from their fines for every 15 minutes spent reading a book of their choice in the library and also use those minutes toward earning incentives in the Summer Reading Program. Now until Nov. 24: West Sacramento Urban Farm Fresh Veggie Box Program: The West Sacramento Urban Farm Program is proud to offer a weekly fresh fruit and veggie box filled with locally grown produce from Center for Land-Based Learning farmers and affiliates. Go to landbasedlearning.org/veggies to learn how you can sign up for this program and get the benefits of fresh and healthy fruits and vegetables. Lunch at the Library: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 12:00 p.m. Children (ages 6-12) are invited to come out and enjoy a FREE lunch at the library. Aug. 9: League of Women Voters Meets Tonight: The League of Women Voters is now establishing an active group in West Sacramento. Join us tonight at Round Table Pizza, 2105 Town Center Plaza, at 6:00 for a one hour organizing meeting and the opportunity to become a founding member. We are a nonpartisan political organization, encouraging informed and active participation in government, working to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influencing public policy through education and advocacy. West Sacramento Chamber of Commerce presents the 2017 market season at The Barn! The 2017 market season will be on the second Thursday in the month in June, July, August. It will be a fun-filled community event which will feature our local farmers, makers, music, food, beer, kids zone, and activities for adults, too! Aug. 11: Back to School Health Fair: Yolo County Children’s Alliance is excited to announce the second annual Back to School Health Fair! This event will be held at the Family Resource Center, 637 Todhunter Ave, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The focus of the event is to provide West Sacramento youth with school supplies and to equip families with valuable local resources. Youth grades K-12 will be receiving backpacks courtesy of Yolo County Backpacks for Kids and there will be a bike raffle! Free! Aug. 11: U-Pick Flowers- Center for LandBased Learning: Enjoy the beauty and pleasure of picking your own fresh flowers at this U-pick event at the 5th & C West Sacramento Urban Farm. You will be able to design your own bouquet and take home the freshest flowers possible! This event is hosted by Flourish Farm Farmer Laurie Gates. Please bring your own bucket or other container and clippers to cut flowers. A few buckets and clippers will be available for use for those who do not have their own. Meet live bats from our local area then have fun creating crafts, playing bat games and dressing up like a bat. Bats are important to the agriculture of the Central Valley. It is important that young children begin to learn about the world around them and to appreciate it. Sacramento and Yolo Counties are home to hundreds of thousands of bats. The Bats and Crafts event aims to end the fears and myths while sharing the importance of these mammals. This special event aimed at young children, especially those that are too young to stay up late to watch the bats fly, takes place Saturday, July 15 and Saturday, September 16 from 10 am to noon at the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area Headquarters.
