WELCOME TO

Claremont Sixth Form

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Claremont Sixth Form. Sixth form marks a key stage in your son or daughter’s education - it is the doorway to their future destination. Our commitment, to each and every one of our students, is to identify the right pathway for them and to give them the impetus to get where they need to be.

We have a strong track record in delivering in this area - with over 80% of our sixth form students accepted into their first choice of destination. We achieve this by being highly ambitious for our students, working with them individually to develop a bespoke programme that reflects their strengths and helps nurture their talents and skills. We have a very broad curriculum, with over 26 different academic programmes on offer, so there really is something for everyone.

We pride ourselves on the high expectations our teachers have for their students, where ambition, attitude and effort are central to what we do. I hope to welcome you and your family to Claremont Sixth Form very soon.

The academic offering in the Sixth Form is based around A Levels and BTEC qualifications. We offer a wide range of A Level subjects, encompassing all of those subjects that might lead to degree study at top Russell group universities. The academic life of the school is organised around five ‘Faculties’Enterprise, Creative, Science, Humanities and Communications - each of which provide a rigorous programme of study both inside and outside the classroom.

Alongside A Levels we offer BTEC qualifications which are modular courses that appeal to more practical learners. We offer BTECs in Sports Science, Performing Arts, Digital Media and Business, which cater for the diverse academic skills of our students and offer routes to further education for all abilities and interests.

OUR VISION

To be a respectful learning community with an unwavering commitment to ‘get better’ at all we do, because learning is a journey that never ends.

Study

Sixth Form is the bridge between school and the possibilities of the world outside. It is the final stage in a long journey and why much of the focus for us at Claremont is to prepare our students for the challenges of adult life.

As students begin to take on more responsibility for their studies, our dedicated Sixth Form Centre provides space for them to work independently as well as collaboratively. A common room and silent study area provide the necessary framework for our students to use their time effectively, and dedicated careers and support staff are based in the building to provide day to day advice and guidance.

Timetabled lessons are devoted to ‘study skills’ to help foster the different ways of working that are central to success in a post-16 educational environment. The transition into Sixth Form is a time when our young people ‘take the wheel’ in their education, with the tutorial team always on hand to ensure they navigate effectively the hills and valleys of these crucial years.

7

Extend

At Claremont, there is an understanding that learning is not confined to the classroom. A wide range of trips and visits away from school help enrich our students’ awareness of the world and provide a deeper context for their continual development. Physicists visit the Large Hadron Collider in CERN, biologists head to the Eden Project and our historians visit Churchill’s Cabinet War rooms and home at Chartwell. Our politics students were in the House of Commons as the new Prime Minister made her maiden speech.

Each academic programme seeks opportunities to deepen students’ understanding, ensuring that the love and pursuit of knowledge is not confined to textbooks.

As part of the International Schools Partnership (ISP), there are a number of opportunities to travel to our sister schools, whether on exchange visits or for annual events such as TEDX talks and student leadership conferences. Sixth Form students are at the forefront of the ISP Buddy Exchange programme, which enables them to experience a period of time learning in one of our partner schools overseas - be that in Europe, or further afield.

Claremont Sixth Form aims to provide opportunities for all of our students to extend themselves beyond what they might envisage is possible.

Challenge

In the modern world, it is often fine margins that distinguish between the good and the very best students. At Claremont we look to give our students the qualifications and skills that mark them out in a very crowded higher education marketplace. The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) does just that. Students embark on a project that can be anything from a high level academic essay, creating a documentary or even cycling the length of Britain!

The process allows our students to learn how to turn ideas into reality, extending themselves beyond the confines of the curriculum. Elsewhere, the Duke of Edinburgh Silver and Gold Awards provide further opportunities for extension, as does the Gold Arts Award. Each qualification enables our young people to showcase their wider skill sets and develop new ones.

Challenging students to push themselves beyond their comfort zone is an essential element in our Sixth Form programme.

Pupils become resilient, determined and ambitious learners who embrace all that school life has to offer.

Discover

At Claremont, we provide students with an astonishing range of opportunities through our co-curricular programme. Built around five key areas, Service, Active, Community, Leadership and Academic ‘Plus’, students are able to build their own bespoke programme, giving themselves a platform to become masters of the things they love whilst discovering a few hidden talents they never knew they had. It provides the platform for developing a healthy and broad set of interests that will appeal to both potential employers and future universities. Whether maintaining fitness through a wide range of active offerings or developing leadership and communication skills through debating or as a member of the CSS news team, the rich co-curricular programme allows students to add layers of extra value. We emphasise a holistic approach where our students are encouraged to stretch and challenge their own knowledge, skills and abilities as they embark on a journey of discovery beyond their normal comfort zones.

Being able to prepare young people for Maths degrees at Harvard as effectively as for Fashion courses in London is something all our staff are deeply proud of.

HEAD OF SCHOOL

Lead

The Sixth Form is the culmination of many years of personal development for our young people. Each student will have passed through the stages of education, always looking up to those in the years above for guidance and inspiration. It is with this in mind, that we have developed a leadership programme in the Sixth Form where our students are able to organise, inspire and guide those further down the school. Being selected as a Claremont School Prefect is both a privilege and an opportunity to make change in the community. As well as taking part in workshops and specialised training, prefects are encouraged to lead their own project in the school, allowing them to leave their mark for those moving up to the Sixth Form in the future.

The activist mindset is encouraged amongst all Sixth Form students, challenging them to find ways to work with others in order make the community a better place for everyone. Student led activities, sport leadership initiatives, setting an example in the classroom - each student will have their own way to inspire those around them.

15

Compete

One of the strong attractions for many students who join our Sixth Form is the opportunity to be part of a developed sports programme. At Claremont, we believe participation in sporting activity helps develop good habits to take into adulthood.

Regardless of ability, students have the chance to benefit from the advantages of a well developed fitness programme. Students in the Sixth Form choose between ‘Squads’ or ‘Fitness’ pathways. For students playing in squads, football, hockey, netball and cricket are the core sports, with training and regular fixtures scheduled throughout the school year. Being part of a squad provides unparalleled opportunities, and the platform for working with others, building a healthy lifestyle and being part of a team.

The Football Academy provides an elite programme that attracts students from across the world, and we compete against some of the leading sports schools on a routine basis. In hockey and cricket we have forged strong links with local clubs, which gives our students further opportunities to compete in the local community. Students choosing the ‘Fitness’ pathway enjoy a diverse range of activities which vary each week and might include strength and conditioning, fitness, yoga or badminton. We have excellent facilities which include our own indoor swimming pool, a weights room and fitness and dance studios.

Our programme at Claremont provides the perfect pathway to sport at university level, nurturing the skills and attitude that translate so well into other areas of Sixth Form life.

Clubs, sporting tournaments and other events make a strong contribution to pupils’ enjoyment of school and to the development of healthy lifestyles.

OFSTED 17 ACTIVE

PASTORAL

Students have high aspirations for their future and are determined to succeed.

OFSTED

Aspire

At Claremont we often talk of ‘Amazing Learning’. Amazing learning happens when our students simply surprise themselves, their parents and teachers, with the levels of learning they have reached. Because this level of learning is amazing, it doesn’t happen every day. But it should happen every so often for everyone in the Sixth Form.

When the time comes to leave Claremont, we want students to take with them the memory of excelling beyond themselves, into their adult lives. Through our tutor and progress systems Claremont students are encouraged to aspire to reach above and beyond what they thought possible. Aspiration and achievement come from a culture where getting better in all that you do is celebrated and encouraged at all times.

19

Connect

As part of the International Schools Partnership (ISP), Claremont is able to offer students a genuinely unique learning experience. ISP has more than 60 schools around the world, from Chile and Columbia to the west, to Vietnam and Malaysia to the east. For students and staff at the school this provides unique opportunities to connect with a global community of schools.

The International Learning Opportunities Programme (ILOS), enables students to connect with our sister schools whilst taking part in film festivals, mathematics challenges, student leadership conferences, chess tournaments and environmental collaborations. The ISP Buddy Exchange programme enables our students to visit any one of the ISP schools across the globe. Being plugged into this network allows for a cultural education for all students, with Sixth Form students in particular, able to build relationships and have cultural learning experiences with their peers from all over the world.

The International Schools Partnership is a global learning community of enormous scale, with central departments dedicated to improving student pathways, developing and sharing education innovations and technologies, and delivering an evolving programme of unique international learning experiences.

High standards of behaviour, good manners and respectful relationships throughout the school make a strong contribution to pupils’ learning.

OFSTED

Inspire

We empower our Sixth Form students to have the confidence to express their own viewpoint and be bold in their vision for their own future, and that of the world around them.

We encourage students to take an activist approach and we provide formal opportunities for them to meet with other students, both from their peer group and also younger years. Student voice groups also meet regularly to act as a forum for student initiatives, and to provide experience on how to successfully communicate with others and implement change.

22
23

Nurture

It is said there has never been a better time to be of school age. Never has there been more opportunities or choices, rocket fuelled by a technological revolution that has opened up whole new worlds of study and employment. Yet, never has there also been more pressure on young people to meet expectations and take advantage of the opportunities presented by the modern world.

At Claremont we are acutely aware of the mental health challenges faced by this generation. Our strong pastoral systems include a dedicated welfare team, personal tutors and a PSHE programme that seeks to prepare our Sixth Form students for life ‘on the outside’.

PASTORAL

Building resilience and intellectual independence is prioritised whilst also ensuring there is a safety net to capture those who find themselves overwhelmed by life as a teenager. We seek to give our students the tools to manage their wellbeing and mental health, whether it be through our fitness programmes or simply having people to talk to within the school community. We aim to ensure that our leavers are ready to face the challenges that lie ahead and thrive as they head out into the world.

24

The school gives the development of pupils’ personal and social skills a high priority. As a result, pupils become mature, articulate and thoughtful learners.

OFSTED

Prepare

From the moment students enrol in our Sixth Form they are preparing for the next stage of their education. Early in Year 12, students are exposed to the multitude of opportunities available to them beyond Claremont. This first year in the Sixth Form culminates in a ‘Futures Week’, when our students take the first steps towards an application to university, apprenticeships or the workplace. We offer workshops to help students reflect on, and evaluate their individual competencies; external visits to university fairs and we host talks from external speakers about a range of professions to include law, journalism, architecture and sports science.

‘Futures Week’ is a comprehensive experience that seeks to open our students’ eyes to both their own potential and the rich possibilities that might be available to them.

25

Apply

Students in the Sixth Form are supported by the dedicated ‘Futures’ team who guide students towards potential careers and through the application process for university. Our Head of Futures is central to this, providing expertise and counsel that ensures students are able to make informed and appropriate decisions for their future. This role is supported by our team of Sixth Form tutors who guide students, step by step, through the application process. They help craft the crucial personal statement and write the all important school reference.

At Claremont, we recognise that this support is only effective when underpinned by a deep knowledge of the individual student, and by taking on the role of the critical friend, we can ensure applications are rich in detail and are a genuine reflection of each student’s talents and aspirations. The diverse range of destinations our students go on to after Claremont is a reflection of this considered and dedicated approach.

CPARTNERSHIP

The school’s well-planned curriculum enthuses pupils about learning and prepares them exceptionally well for the next stage of their education.

Celebrate

Over the last few years, Claremont Sixth Form has quickly shown itself to be an environment where students achieve more than they ever thought possible, matching or bettering the results of many other leading schools in our area, with our academically diverse programme. This year we saw 55% of our results graded at A* or A, or their BTEC equivalent, demonstrating a rigour in exam preparation to complement the wider holistic experience of a Claremont Sixth Form education.

Each year, a significant proportion of our students gain access to their first choice of university. In recent years, these have included a wide range of institutions such as Cambridge, UCL, Durham, Bristol, Exeter, Kings College London, Harvard and Wellesley College. Equally, our artists and performers go on to attend some of the top art and drama schools in the land, demonstrating our core aim of preparing students for their chosen destination, regardless of their particular aptitude or interest.
