PAOLA DIANA TAKES IT ALL! Inspirational, ultra-glamorous entrepreneur, Paola Diana, is a self-confessed glass-ceiling breaker.

© Angela Sara West 2019 www.angelasarawest.com

She heads up a trio of highly-successful companies and, as a committed advocate of women’s rights, and the bestselling author of an insightful female empowerment book, she’s a tireless campaigner for female welfare and equality. Paola talks to Angela Sara West about how she made it to the top. She’s described as a “real all-rounder”, with a dynamic life seeing her successfully balance motherhood and multiple businesses. As the founder and Chairman of the Diana Group, she has established her company as a market leader in the recruitment and luxury lifestyle field and 06 NEWPORT VISION APRIL/MAY 2019

been recognised in The Spear’s 500 2019 as one of London’s most influential service providers for high-net-worth individuals. Undeterred by the gender stereotypes and limiting boundaries she faced growing up in Italy, Paola wholeheartedly rejected the outdated rhetoric of women being unable to balance a career with motherhood and founded Nanny & Butler and Sigillus, offering invaluable services ranging from highquality childcare and household help to exceptional lifestyle management services to an elite clientele. She has since launched SupremePA, providing head hunting and recruitment services for secretarial staff.

As the leading secretarial recruitment agency, covering all industry sectors, from banking and professional services, to theatre and retail, SupremePA specialises in head hunting highly-experienced executive and personal assistants, alongside recruiting into all support roles, from office manager and senior secretary positions, to receptionist and administrative roles.

All Roman roads lead to... London!

Paola has proven to be a multifaceted success story… but how did it all begin? Armed with a BA in Political Science and an MA in Communications from the University of Bologna, she spent five years advising various political and non-profit organisations and was the director of a think tank supporting former President Romano Prodi, before being appointed Executive Director

at ULIBO University, working in project management, coordination and PR. In 2007, Paola’s first-hand experience of the difficulties of finding high-quality childcare and home help inspired her first business venture and Nanny & Butler was born! The leading global bespoke search consultancy now operates from offices in Rome, Milan, New York and London’s Notting Hill, providing high-end services to royals, dignitaries and ultra-high-net-worth individuals in countries including Switzerland, Russia, the Middle East and the US. “I took the UK’s business model for nanny services and used it in Italy. I was surprised by the demand when I launched my website,” she explains. Nanny & Butler has set the standard in recruitment for private household staff.

Butler. “People would ask for the best interior designer or access to an exclusive event... I saw a huge demand for requests above and beyond household staff recruitment and childcare.”

The very best luxury lifestyle experiences The world-class company offers discerning clients and busy entrepreneurs the most exclusive, extraordinary, oneof-a-kind lifestyle experiences with the utmost discretion, providing concierge services and professional advice, assistance with developing businesses sustainably, and everything from VIP entry to premium real estate and wedding planning. No mean feat. Whether it’s the latest ‘hard-to-get’ supercar, offmarket Picasso art, wedding proposals by helicopter or tracking tigers in India... even space flights, “We make ‘the impossible possible’ for our members,” says Paola.

There will, of course, always be a huge demand for a ‘Mary Poppins’ in high-end households and the company’s phenomenal success prompted Paola to found Sigillus, an exclusive luxury lifestyle management company which, she says, occurred organically following enquiries at Nanny &

A very creative person, who loves challenges and doing new things, she says it’s important to always remain realistic and confident in providing the best luxury lifestyle experiences. “There’s never a problem, only a solution for our members. We ensure we have an in-depth understanding of our members’ lifestyle, needs and desires, providing them with a one-of-akind lifestyle experience. Being innovative and proactive is vital. We are highly flexible in satisfying each request to provide the very best, unique, tailor-made services. Returning clients are a sign that you are doing well. It’s so rewarding as a business owner to have that loyalty.”

The philosophy behind her companies’ exceptional service? “We ensure we have an in-depth understanding of our members’ lifestyle, needs and desires. Being innovative and proactive is vital in proposing suggestions and offers of the most exclusive, contemporary attractions in every perspective of a luxury lifestyle. Due to our extensive and exclusive networks, we’re able to provide professional advice and services in each field with our bespoke and unique consultants worldwide. We are highly flexible in satisfying each unique request, going above and beyond to turn clients’ passions into extraordinary experiences.

Flying the flag for female entrepreneurs

Paola is particularly passionate about equal rights for women and feels it’s her mission to ensure women are represented equally in both business and life. In building her booming business empire, she overcame numerous barriers. As a mother of two, she encountered sexual prejudice on her way to the top. “In Italy, men who hold power like weak women who will cry and fold at the first sign of resistance. They want women whose sole purpose is to be lovers, wives or daughters of men. This was never going to be the case with me,” she explains. “I struggled to find a job in Italy. I got into politics via a professor I’d previously worked with and then decided to become an entrepreneur so that I could be my own boss and not have to face sexism in my career. What does not kill me makes me stronger. Women are the biggest change agent of the 21st century.”

A thought-provoking politician

Paola used politics to help raise awareness for issues relating to women’s rights. She’s a massive supporter of Hillary Clinton, who wants to make positive changes for women. “Politics should be the noblest of arts, but instead it often forms a stage for men to flex their egos. When this patriarchy collapses under the blows of science, a new era will form… an era where empathy, knowledge and peace will count for more than muscles.” In 2006, she founded PariMerito (Equal Merit), a game-changing association and think tank which lobbies and campaigns for female empowerment, and was instrumental in the passing of an Italian law requiring every company board to have at least 30% female representation. “The idea to start PariMerito came very naturally to me. There’s a real gap between opportunities for men and women. We have to network as a society and come together to create this change.” “Female leaders set an iconic image in society with strength, education, ability and capability in professional life. More support is needed for women at the top of the career hierarchy, to make a revolution of the ‘glass ceiling’. A successful and sustainable business stems from a gender-balanced board of directors. Highly-educated women have a huge capability for taking strategic and management responsibilities, as well as providing professional advice in many corporations.

LUXURY LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE 07

Sometimes, women have strengths in certain areas that men don’t, which indicates that successful businesses need both women and men on the board.”

A bestselling author

Paola has established herself as a profound figurehead for defying all laws of gender supremacy. She has relayed her experience of working closely with the Italian government in her books, and has established herself as a leading light in the literary world as a result of her bestselling book ‘Saving the World. Women: the XXI’s Century Factor for Change’. Perfectly combining the theories of sociology, science and history, Paola has developed a niche for herself that has seen her lauded as a female activist renowned for digging beneath the surface to uncover what truly constitutes a patriarchal society. Already a bestseller in Italy, the book is being translated into English and extensively revised to incorporate recent events that impinge on female conditions and the struggles to achieve a meaningful equality. “I write about history to free us from the past, I write about the present to strive for alternative destinies and I write about the future because the world we live in is not the only one possible.” Paola’s polemic style of writing is aimed at inflicting impactful modifications in governments, industries and cultural institutions. “We can’t close our eyes anymore to the enormous social emergency that is the conditions for women and girls worldwide. The time has come to take a leap and help those

08 NEWPORT VISION APRIL/MAY 2019

left behind. Our governments can’t act as if nothing is happening when women’s rights are constantly disrespected,” she says. “My heart bleeds for the millions of women who suffer injustices every day, all over the world. Everyone’s heart should bleed the same way, just as we live and breathe in the same way. Indifference is the antechamber of evil.” “I think my experiences have led to me making the fight for women’s rights my mission. Female empowerment is much more than a secondary issue or the issue of a minority; it is a disruptive power that will

change the social system in which we all live. It is a creative force that will shape our society to follow a completely different path, where inclusion, empathy, respect, happiness and peace will flourish. Feminist and humanitarian diplomacy should be based on the principle that women’s rights are inalienable universal rights and, as such, cannot be denied because of religion, culture or tradition.” She sources inspiration from successful entrepreneurs who have started from nothing and achieved greatness. “Richard Branson is a genius, and I love

how he’s a creative innovator in his field. Steve Jobs was great and truly left his mark on the world. I love Elizabeth Arden’s story... She started out alone with just an assistant, selling creams door-to-door and it has turned into a global empire!” Her best career move? “Aiming for the top of the market and not lowering my prices, even in moments of crisis. Making this decision let people know our value and set our position in the industry.” And her worst career gaffe? “Making the mistake of trusting someone who I thought was a friend, mixing business with friendship. I’ll never do this again…”

She says the best thing about being an entrepreneur is the freedom of having her own agenda. “And doing what I wanted to do as a mother, not only as a worker. I stayed connected and worked from home so I could enjoy the moments of my children growing up. Being your own boss, it’s so rewarding to have the independence and creative freedom to make your own decisions and see your ideas quickly become a reality. I love that I don’t have to prove myself to anyone, which adds even more to my confidence!”

40s, 50s and beyond…

Unsurprisingly, proactive Paola works relentlessly, splitting her time between her native Italy and the UK: “I have a home in Rome and an apartment in Mayfair, London... enjoying both countries’ cultures and weather!” She’s hands-on with her businesses, directing the teams and overseeing the day-to-day business operations and strategies. Stylish Paola somehow manages to maintain a successful work-life balance. “Life is not just about business and success, but having a loving family you treasure for life. I don’t want to miss any stages of my children’s development.” With the big 5-0 the next milestone for Paola, does age matter to her? “I love myself more now than ever.

Before, I was more insecure and spent a lot of time dealing with stupid issues, not focusing on the important things. Now, I feel powerful, strong and successful and definitely don’t care about age! Honestly, age is just a numerical figure, but the mind matters a lot. I feel very young inside and even my daughter’s friends love me and connect with me on social media. I surround myself with happy, positive and energetic people to boost optimistic energy, which makes me happy and feel young. It all comes from within.” A large slice of her market is the over-50s category and she feels she understands this age group extremely well. “Women this age are our best clients as they appreciate life more, know what they want and are more open to enjoy things to the fullest.” Stunning Paola clearly takes good care of herself: “I have a massage every week, do yoga and meditation to revitalise my body and mind, and walk whenever I can to stay fit. I love the classic, powerful, elegant look with a touch of sexy. I’m not afraid of showing my curves. I admire Italian designers, but I do appreciate Chanel. Givenchy and Balenciaga are also favourites.” Any guilty pleasures? “Many! I love food, especially Italian, which has the most calories!

I love pasta, desserts and Champagne. Years ago, I gave up feeling guilty and started enjoying the food I want. We only have one life and I feel comfortable with myself. That’s all that matters. I disagree with modern culture, which wants us to all be skinny and young forever. Women can be beautiful with all of their curves and signs of ageing... we don’t all have to fit the stereotypical cookie cutter image.”

Time out

Where does this successful entrepreneur go for a much-needed break from business? “It’s hard to switch off completely, but it’s important to refresh myself and come back to work even stronger. I love spa retreats and having peace of mind by the sea. I adore small islands where I can really relax and feel the sea’s energy. I’m particularly in love with the Maldives - it’s like paradise - and local culture in exotic countries, plus unforgettable experiences, such as a safari in Tanzania.” What’s next for this unstoppable entrepreneur? “I’ve recently launched Sigillus in Dubai and New York, and hope to go global!” Can women have it all? “Yes, of course! But first of all, they need to want it all. Be ambitious and then take it all!”

Outdoor Living

We obviously need to make the most of the sun when it reaches Wales so an outdoor living area where time can be spent with family and friends is not only a necessity but an investment. A space for dining or relaxing is no longer just a table and chairs or a pair of recliners. It's time to invest in a space that can be enjoyed year after year. Outdoor sheds and outhouses are now becoming an additional living area for the summer months with firepits and dining areas being places to enjoy, congregate and celebrate. 22 NEWPORT VISION APRIL/MAY 2019

DESIGNER GARDEN

Colour- go green

Adding colour is always easy in the garden and can be added with beautiful flowers and accessories. When planning to decorate a room in the home, colour palettes can be restricted but the garden is a place where you can really go wild. As for traditional hanging baskets, 2019 makes way for more greenery and foliage. It's also all about pots, pots, pots and you can add some real statement pieces or themes throughout your garden using a variety of sizes.

Lighting

As the sun goes down on your summer BBQ there is no reason why your fun should end. Lighting shouldn't be an after thought in your outdoor living space. Strategic placement of lights and plants can make your garden just as beautiful during the darkness of the evening and night as it is in the sunshine.

The Weather may not be the warmest but whilst the sun is shining it is the perfect time of the year to start work on your garden. We all want our gardens to be an enjoyable space that can be enjoyed throughout the summer by all of the family. We want it to be an escape from the confines of our four walls, somewhere visually appealing that can be used to rest, play, cook and dine. So this issue we are looking at the key trends to make your Garden the most versatile place in your home! LUXURY LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE 23

NATHAN PALMER

We have had a cold, windy and rainy start of the year, and it is time to find a remedy for it: I propose neon colours. Bold, dazzling and daring will be the keywords for this summer’s fashion, and will brighten up everyone’s day, in rain or sunshine. Crazy, creative prints and 60’s fashion will hit the market at full storm, and, fortunately or not, 60’s fashion will make a comeback. And as the season of horse racing approaches quickly, prepare for an amazing show! It's a chance to bring out your inner Southern dandy. And whether you do it with a brightly coloured bow tie or some pastel chinos, it will impress at whatever event you attend for the day at the races. How exactly do I create a suit then, all the while following trends yet still maintaining the unique aspect of my brand? Inspiration and vision, creativity. When you’re looking at fabrics as a fashion designer, you need to be able to understand in your brain and your mind what that’s going to look like as a garment.

26 NEWPORT VISION APRIL/MAY 2019

Bold, Dazzling and Daring WILL BE THE KEYWORDS FOR THIS SUMMER’S FASHION, AND WILL BRIGHTEN UP EVERYONE’S DAY, IN RAIN OR SUNSHINE.

How is that fabric going to treat? If it is a really stiff fabric, what type of garment are you going to make that’s going to suit that fabric the best? So, number one being creative. You need to have an eye to look at something and see how to make it better. Then finding inspiration is essential to creating a suit. Finding inspiration is just as much about the attitude with which you wear the pieces. Looking at everyday life, and mundane events, and visualising them as an art piece, as a garment. I enjoy this creative process, as it allows me to see more of a suit than just the visual aspect of it, but also the story behind it. While newer fashion trends focus on the bold and bright, they also often take inspiration from, and honour, older heritage and traditions.

This is why my new collection will be centred around seventeenth-century fashion. As summer ends and autumns starts, the elegant and sophisticated collection will bring warmth to people I want them to feel powerful and timeless. We’ve talked about fashion, but what is in the future of my brand in itself? I am currently hoping to establish an online retail store within the next three months, to make my products more accessible. I also have several events planned in the next few months to promote the fashion show that I will be holding in September, showcasing my new collection about seventeenth-century fashion, so keep an eye and ear out for more! ...
