SPORT 2009
of this year some of the junior boys will have to make the step up next season. A big thank you has to go to Bill Jager for his energy and enthusiasm throughout the season, Bill's commitment ensures that the boys get the best chance to be successful in a sport that he is very passionate about.
JUNIOR VOLLEYBALL 2009 Volleyball at a junior level at Boys' High has increased in popularity and we have seen healthy numbers turning up to weekly sessions. Like the senior boys, the juniors started off with a beach tournament in which we were also very successful. Nick Jager and Orion Kana won comfortably with Mitchell Aro, Mark Houwers and Henry Boon coming in third. A successful day for the boys, showing that they had the skills required to do well in the upcoming indoor tournaments.
CYCLING The first competitive event for the year was the Taranaki Secondary Schools Championships. This was held at Lepperton. The NPBHS A team, which consisted of William Tennent, Hayden Brooks, Jason Thomason and Arran Richards comfortably won the Teams Time Trial. They completed the 15km course in a time of 25:54. The NPBHS B team, which consisted of Chris Taylor, Tom Burrell, Liam Paterson and Jamie Aitchison were second equal in a time of28:18. After a few minutes rest, the boys had to get themselves ready for the Individual Time Trial. The course was 7.5 km long. Liam Paterson was second in the junior boys event while in the
senior boys, William Tennent was first (12:06), Hayden Brooks was second (12:33) and Jason Thomason was third (12:35). The other major event for the year was the Nationals at Levin and Feilding. Arran Richards competed in the under-16 boys' road race. Hayden Brooks and Jason Thomason competed in the under-17 boys' road race. Jonny Hobo-Tuck competed in the under-20 division. All of the boys finished well off the pace but it was great experience for them and a chance to race the top cyclists in the country.
T.S.S.A. INDOOR BOWLS On Wednesday 26 August seven NPBHS students played in the TSSA Indoor Bowls tournament hosted by North Taranaki Indoor Bowls at the Central Hall, Belt Road. The squad consisted of a fours team, Vincent Sharp (Skip), Alex Sprott, Joseph Bailey and Dylan Hayman, a pairs team of Ethan Bilderbeck (Skip) and Jonny Hobo-Tuck with Mark Potroz playing the singles. Mark, who had been selected as reserve, had to play at the last minute in the very strong
singles competition. He played steady bowls throughout the day and if he maintains this form he will be a strong contender for future events. The pairs combination played great bowls to have three wins from four finishing third overall. They had the opportunity to represent North Taranaki at the Secondary Quadrangular Tournament but unfortunately were unable to play at this event due to other commitments. The fours combination went exceptionally well going into the last round unbeaten. Their last game was against NPGHS (also unbeaten),
this was to be a very tense game with the result decided with the last bowl of the last end when the NPGHS skip knocked out a BHS bowl for the draw. This left the BHS team one point short of achieving a place in the top three. Thank you Mr Noel Knight (Coach) for your time and Ms Ami Bennett (Sports Administrator) for your encouragement.

NATIONAL KARATE CHAMPS, AUCKLAND Connor Anderson won gold medals in the intermediate Black Belt Kata (technical routines) and also in the Kumite (fighting). A very successful national event for Connor to come away with two very important national titles.
During terms three and four we had a general

muster of players interested in playing and trialling for the top junior team. After a few weeks of training and trials the squad was narrowed down to ten players and preparation began for the Taranaki Regional qualifying tournament that selects who is the top ranking team in Taranaki for the North Island Champs. After some good training sessions and with an athletic, well focussed team, the boys went into the TSSSA tournament confident that they could be successful. The team went through the tournament unbeaten, managing to win all of our games convincingly. The result meant that the team goes in as favourite to win the Taranaki regional qualifying series.
practised worldwide and is in the Japanese education system as a national sport. At this stage the World Cup that was to be held in Tokyo later in the year is postponed due to the recession. We congratulate Connor on a huge achievement for him, but he has put in a lot of training for it. A very talented young sportsman with dedication and discipline.
The profile of volleyball has risen in the school over the last couple of years, due to some good results from the senior team and some good guidance from Bill Jager. Hopefully 2010 will see some similar results for a sport that offers a lot for the young men that take part in it. Mr Michael Somers
