This year the squad was named later in term 1 so that they could hit the ground running in the local Youth division (Under 19} at the start of term 2. With the return of players who featured in the squad last year mixed in with the undefeated year 9 team from 2012, things looked promising.

a bridge too far. Hamilton scored 3 goals from set pieces and despite a valiant effort from the N PBHS boys they couldn't make a dent in the deficit. 2nd place out of 12 teams and considering the calibre of the opposition it was a great result. Many ofthe senior players stepped up during the tournament and can be proud ofthe way they represented the school and

This year the boys played a number of opponents that were a lot bigger, stronger and usually faster than them. The boys, however, always played with more skill than their opposition and managed to score some great team goals that got everyone on the sideline fizzing I 2nd in the league is a good accomplishment although the boys realise they were more than capable of winn ing the league. They will learn from the experience and be better for it.

The boys didn't need any extra words of encouragement to get up for that game. Unfortunately the boys had played theirfinal against Gisborne earlier in the day and winn ing the trophy was

their families.

This season we were lucky enough to have two players selected in the New Zealand Under 15 team to tour Malaysia. Drew Farnsworth has been selected as a non travelling reserve at this stage and Gian Squatriti- initially selected as a non travelling reserve has now earned a place on the tour. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the parents who make appearances a ll over the country and in particular New Plymouth to ensure that their son gets the best support possible. Michael Taylor and Dam Squatriti also deserve a mention for the great they work they did at the Hillsdene Tournament in Tauranga your efforts were greatly appreciated by all.

The squad made it's way over to Tauranga for the 3rd year of the Hillsdene Trophy. It was always going to be a tough ask with 7 games in a 2 V2 day period but the boys were up for it. After narrowly losing to Hamilton Boys' High in pool play 3- 2 the boys had good wins against Western Heights High, Tauranga Boys' College, Long Bay and Aquinas, the boys made it through to the semi final where they would play Gisborne Boys'. The squad had played exceptional ly well throughout the pool play and each and every member of the squad got a lot of game time and managed to perform at a very high level to ensure that they got themselves in the position to win the tournament. In the semi final against Gisborne the boys came out firing and scored 3 quick goals to put Gisborne on the back foot from the outset. That would be the end of the scoring as

Callaghan made his way up to the front and scored the equaliser from a well constructed piece of football. 3 -3 was more than a fair reflection of how the games was played and the N PBHS boys played an outstanding gamel

College Matches This year the boys were able to play 3 college matches and test themselves against the best players in their age group from sim ilar schools. First up was Ham ilton Boys' High and although the boys were under a lot of pressure from the outset, a spirited performance meant that t hey pushed the H BHS boys hard. Eventually going down 2-0 wh ich was a creditable end res ult given the pedigree of some ofthe Hamilton players. Next was Pa lmerston North Boys' High School- the boys played very wel l and dominated for most ofthe game. Unfortunately a defensive error meant that the score was eventually 1 - 1 and despite the boys pressing for the winner it didn't come. After the two away fixtures the boys hosted Wellington Boys' College. A team made up of a number of year 11 players who fancied themselves against the smaller lads from NPBHS. In the game ofthe season the boys played their hearts out and matched their opposition from the capita l in terms of skill and ability and brought far more intensity than their opponents. The game was locked at 2- 2 late in the second half and Wel li ngton looked to have sealed victory with a great goal from their central midfielder. Their celebrations were short lived, however; when Harry
