Autumn rarely disappoints as far as film content is concerned, so do take advantage of gems such as Ken Loach’s ‘The Old Oak’ and Kenneth Branagh’s ‘A Haunting in Venice.’ We also give everybody the opportunity to rewatch ‘Oppenheimer,’ and experience the whirlwind that is ‘Barbie’ (including a special ‘Baby Makes 2’ screening for parents with little ones).

Some of you may enjoy films from the scarier end of the scale. If that’s you, you’re in for a trick and a treat as we approach Halloween at the end of this season. Chichester Cinema’s Creepy Carnival will include the light-hearted ‘Haunted Mansion,’ the cult classic ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show,’ and on its 50th anniversary, a remaster of the iconic horror – ‘The Exorcist.’

Some great film and talk combinations are also on offer: we focus on legendary Japanese director Yasujirô Ozu as well as the incomparable duo of Powell & Pressburger. There will also be a talk on the African American singer/actor Paul Robeson of ‘Ol Man River’ fame as part of Black History Month, alongside a screening of ‘Show Boat.’

I would dearly love to hand out a few mentions after another successful Chichester International Film Festival in August. BARBIE

To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling deliver super impressive performances in the smartest blockbuster of the summer.

Barbie is living her best life in her perfect Barbie world, partying of an evening with Barbie political leaders, supreme court judges and Nobel laureates, and a castrato chorus of beach-bunny Ken clones when suddenly she is assailed with the terrible thought of dying. She must journey to the real world outside to sort this out and so she and Ken arrive in scuzzy Santa Monica in time-honoured fish-out-ofwater style. Dismiss this film at your peril - it is definitely not made for 8-year-olds and their Barbie dolls. At its core, Greta Gerwig’s (‘Ladybird’, ‘Frances Ha’) film delivers a surprisingly strong emotional hook in Barbie’s conundrum of being caught between her idyllic plastic life and the ever-changing, complicated real world.

Back by popular demand: In the shadow of the pandemic, a small town rallies to protect a beloved local bookstore. A landmark in Lenox, Massachusetts, The Bookstore is a magical, beatnik gem. Ever since 1976, it has been owned and operated by Matt Tannenbaum, a tall, solicitous, eccentric, engagingly garrulous lover of stories and words and literature who ritually answers the phone with a jaunty nerdish “Hello, bookstore!” Tannenbaum’s fondness for his store and its wares is a beautiful thing to behold, even at its most vulnerable. This intimate portrait of The Bookstore and the family at its heart offers a journey through good times, hard times, and the stories hidden on the shelves. Lovers of books, and especially bookstores, will be swept away by this real-life survival story.

If you missed it in the summer season, here is your final chance to see one of the films of the year, a quality biopic from one of the premium directors of the 21st Century, Christopher Nolan (‘Inception,’ Interstellar’ and ‘Dunkirk’). Selected screenings will include a five minute intermission.

Physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) works with a team of scientists to develop the atomic bomb. He served as the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II and is often credited as the “father of the atomic bomb” for his role in the Manhattan Project, the research and development undertaking that created the world’s first-ever nuclear weapons. This is a story rife with controversies and drama, which takes on nobody less than the man who ushered in a new level of war, whether he wanted it or not. Brace yourself for a torrent of emotion from the fantastic Emily Watson as a simple, pious newlywed in von Trier’s challenging examination of faith and its limits. The first of our von Trier double that will also feature ‘Melancholia’ from 16 Sep. In a small and religious coastal town, a simple, devoutly religious Scottish woman, Bess McNeill (Emily Watson), finds a pårtner in an oil rig worker from Norway, Jan Nyman (Stellan Skarsgard). However, the relationship grows strained when Nyman breaks his neck in a horrific work accident on the rig and becomes paralysed. Unable to perform sexually and suffering mentally from the accident as well, Jan convinces Bess to have sex with other men, which she comes to believe is God’s work. Issues of faith, devotion, sexuality and divine intervention are at the centre of this daring and provocative piece that placed writer-director Lars von Trier on the international map.

Filmmaker Alice Winocour based her film on her brother’s experience of the Bataclan attacks, but focuses on how survivors put their lives back together after such events.

Virginie Efira plays Mia, a no-nonsense journalist and translator in her 40s, partner, no kids. It’s bad luck on a grand scale that she’s in the restaurant targeted by terrorists. Winocour films the attack mostly from Mia’s perspective, flat on her stomach lying on the ground. Like her, all we really see is the killer’s feet. It’s the sound design – breaking glass and terror – that makes it unbearable. Three months later, with a frustratingly hazy memory of the attack, Mia finds herself numbed and unable to resume her life. Efira is brilliant in scenes where she doesn’t say a word, barely twitching a muscle in her face, yet somehow you know what she’s feeling. (Subtitles)

A new road threatens a mountain community in Lucas Millard and Kate Stryker’s gently observational documentary. Every winter Mikma and her family travel by foot from their village deep in the Himalayas of Nepal to sell local medicinal plants in urban markets. This year, construction of a new highway to China has begun in their roadless valley, and things are never going to be the same. Mechanical diggers gouge chunks out of the hillside while the locals look on, concerned about the fate of an elderly neighbour’s potato plot. The inevitable collision between progress and tradition dominates the film. It’s beautifully observational, catching wonderful details of daily life along with the sparky personalities of the people on screen as they make their annual migration. (Subtitles)

There’s a good reason why this film has managed to carve out significant space in the summer box office marketplace.

1970s Rome: a time of great social and cultural change, full of grit and glamour. The young Borghetti family has just moved into one of the many newly-built apartment blocks in the city. Despite the beautiful, sweeping views of Rome from their top floor apartment, the family is not as close as they once were. Clara (Penélope Cruz) and Felice (Vincenze Amato) are no longer in love, but are unable to leave each other. Clara finds refuge from her loneliness in the shelter of her special relationships with her three children. The oldest, Adriana (11), an unknown child in this new neighbourhood, deliberately presents as a boy to the neighbourhood children, pushing the family’s bond towards breaking point. To say director Emanuele Crialese’s camera falls in love with Cruz would be an understatement. (Subtitles)

The tantalising history of the Elvis TV “comeback” special of 1968 is told and then retold from every conceivable angle in this earnest and all-encompassing documentary.

Premiering days before the anniversary of Presley’s death, ‘Reinventing Elvis: The ‘68 Comeback’ reveals what really happened behind the scenes of this mesmerising hour of television. When it aired on the night of 3 December, 1968, the special became the most-watched television event of the year. Nearly half of the entire TV-watching audience tuned in to see Elvis Presley, clad in an iconic black leather suit, deliver some of the greatest performances of his life, reinvigorating his career and changing the pop-culture landscape forever. The outtakes are revealing too, none more so than previously banished footage of the backing dancer Susan Henning canoodling openly with Elvis in scenes that are disarmingly intimate.

Amsterdam’s journey becomes a fight for personal survival and to find a place for the Irish people in 1860s New York. Spectacular, brilliant, but punishing, with what must be the two bloodiest battle scenes ever committed to celluloid. At the least, the film is a corrective to the accepted notion that urban violence is a 20th century phenomenon.

Punjabi hero Rocky (Ranveer Singh), is heir to a Delhi sweet empire, and a man not visibly lacking in self-esteem, “I look like Prada and Gucci got together to give birth to me,” he wails, flanked by hundreds of adoring female dancers who seem in no mood to contradict him. It’s up to the hard-hitting Bengali TV journalist Rani (Alia Bhatt) to bring him down a peg or two when they join forces as impromptu matchmakers. The central love story is backed by the sadder story of the grandparents, all played by giants of Hindi cinema, with a respect for life’s complications and disappointments that has almost entirely vanished from American movies. Mark Cousins, the award-winning filmmaker behind ‘The Story of Film: An Odyssey’, ‘The Eyes of Orson Welles’ and ‘The Story of Film: A New Generation,’ tackles this question and looks at the auteur with a new and radical approach: through the use of the auteur’s own voice. As Hitchcock rewatches his films, we are taken on an odyssey through his vast career - his vivid silent films, the legendary films of the 1950s and 60s and his later works - in playful and revealing ways. Anton Corbijn’s first feature documentary tells the story of Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey “Po” Powell, the creative geniuses behind the iconic album art design studio, Hipgnosis, responsible for some of the most recognisable album covers of all time. During this period, record companies didn’t dictate to acts like Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Paul McCartney what their LP covers should look like - Storm and Po did. They made money; they lost money. They did great things; they did silly things. They fell out bitterly; they made up. They never played a note, but they changed music. Corbijn manages to capture their you-know-it-when-yousee-it Hipgnosis style through his own crystalline lens, even in his archival selections. A fun ride for anyone with any affection for that era of music, especially those who miss the days when album cover art mattered.

This Academy Award-nominated film presents a series of interconnected romantic entanglements. Narrated by an omniscient guide (Anton Walbrook), the movie’s characters include the prostitute (Simone Signoret), who meets up with the soldier (Serge Reggiani), who later becomes involved with the maid (Simone Simon). The film’s whole outlook on human desire is cynical, and yet the tone is breezily charming throughout. Here, love is bittersweet all round. Visually brilliant and innovatively told. (Subtitles)

Depardieu commands an uncharacteristic stillness, dialling down his famous charisma, surrendering himself to the material. Director Leconte pays loving tribute to Simenon’s vast and classic oeuvre with devotion to character, rich ambience, and a great story skilfully told. A heart-warming story of friendship and survival set against the backdrop of the 2001 Foot and Mouth outbreak. Bea Roberts’ twohander about male friendship and a dying way of life is small but beautifully observed.

Adapted from Roberts’ multi-award-winning stage play, the film tells of the relationship between a Devon farmer and the vet who is assigned to cull his precious herd. Nigel Hastings and David Fielder reprise their hugely successful on-stage roles as Jeff and Michael. This is a savagely funny and sad play directed with real delicacy by Paul Robinson. The between-scene transitions denoting the passing of time are exquisitely managed. There are terrific performances, too, from the leads as the odd couple who, in the absence of women, forge an enduring friendship. Premiered in the UK at the recent Chichester International Film Festival.

It’s a sweet journey that will leave you wishing you could stay longer in Regan’s world.

As a planet hurtles toward a collision course with Earth, two sisters (Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg) cope with the approaching doomsday in different ways. The second of our remastered von Trier films after ‘Breaking the Waves’ from 2 Sep.

The story centres on a young woman, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) – Von Trier’s surrogate – who experiences a debilitating depression just as the literal end of the world is nigh, with a blue planet, the titular Melancholia, looming in the sky and set to hit Earth. In ‘Melancholia’, von Trier has created a mission statement of a masterpiece, one that reminds us that nihilism itself can serve as a legitimate form of creation, a means as well as The End. It is so powerful because it refuses to do what people in the grip of mental disorder are often pressured to do: make the pain small. 12 years on, it stands as a masterpiece about mental illness.

Join the Portokalos family as they travel to a family reunion in Greece for a heartwarming and hilarious trip full of love, twists and turns.

Back in 2002, Nia Vardalos’ ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’, based on her own upbringing and romantic life, went on an unprecedented box office run, climbing every week through sheer word of mouth to become the highest-grossing romantic comedy ever. The Portokalos family takes a trip to Greece for a reunion with their extended Greek family - the final wish of patriarch Gus, who has passed away. (The real-life actor who played Gus, Michael Constantine, passed in 2021.) While Toula and Ian search for Gus’ childhood friends, love blossoms between Aristotle and Paris (which is an unwelcome development to Paris, who had ghosted Aristotle before the trip), and Aunt Voula continues to be Aunt Voula, the most hilarious member of the Portokalos family.

Their amateur sleuthing is quickly uncovered by Michel and triggers an unlikely - and bold - business proposition for them both. Few caper comedies have this much heart, and few romantic dramas offer such an appealingly nutty plot. Keeps you off-kilter, and its escalating antics always entertain. (Subtitles)

Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends, are separated after Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea. Twenty years later, they are reunited for one fateful week as they confront notions of love and destiny.

The film follows two people who might be soulmates, even though they have never kissed and haven’t been in the same city for two decades. Writer-director Celine Song modulates perfectly the delicate tonal balance of this wise, wistful film, dividing her narrative into three distinct segments and following the characters when they’re roughly 12, 24 and 36. After our sell-out preview screenings, this wonderful local documentary receives an official release. Textile artist Allan Brown spends seven years making a dress by hand from foraged stinging nettles, all picked on the South Downs near Brighton.

Beautifully filmed by award-winning documentary maker Dylan Howitt, ‘The Nettle Dress’ follows Allan along the whole seven-year journey. This is ‘hedgerow couture’, the greenest of slow fashion. It’s also his medicine, the way he survives the death of his wife, that left him and his four children bereft. The challenge of making near zero carbon clothing sourced within a few miles of his home means relearning ancient crafts and recalls Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale ‘Wild Swans’. From early experiments making nettle thread, through foraging, processing, spinning, weaving and cutting the cloth. The elderly Shukishi (Chishu Ryu) and his wife, Tomi (Chieko Higashiyama), take the long journey from their small seaside village to visit their adult children in Tokyo. Their elder son, Koichi (Sô Yamamura), a doctor, and their daughter, Shige (Haruko Sugimura), a hairdresser, don’t have much time to spend with their aged parents, and so it falls to Noriko (Setsuko Hara), the widow of their younger son who was killed in the war, to keep her in-laws company. Paul Robeson (1898-1978), son of a freed slave, professional football player, Shakespearean actor and film star, renowned baritone and political activist, was also targeted by the US authorities for his progressive views on a range of social and political issues. A local priest (Jason Miller), however, thinks the girl may be seized by the devil. The priest makes a request to perform an exorcism, and the church sends in an expert (Max von Sydow) to help with the difficult job. Game-changing films are often the object of parody and referencing which tend to chip away at their status. However, ‘The Exorcist’ is still very scary and its notorious scenes still make for uncomfortable viewing.
