In 2009, the Check It formed in answer to Washington D.C.’s record-high crime rate against its LGBT communities. As the United States' first documented LGBT gang, its members strive to protect one another; they fight to survive the gritty areas of the nation’s capital through confidence, style, and ready violence. Following members Day Day, Tray, Alton, and Skittles, Check It examines the cruelty its young members faced in childhood, the new family the Check It has given them, and the destructive behaviors that threaten its members’ futures. With some guidance from gang counselor Ron Molten and other community leaders the Check It might stand a chance, but as Ron attests: while being black comes with its own set of challenges, being gay and black is a whole other beast. —Amber Love

Filmed on the ground beginning shortly after the flood waters receded, this documentary follows three individuals from the eponymous St. Bernard Parish as they attempt to reconstruct their lives in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Each has had to struggle in different ways following the hurricane, and each has a story to tell about it. Whether they accidentally slept through the evacuation and witnessed the devastation first hand, or they came back to find theirs was the last home remaining on the block, through their accounts of survival, resilience, and rebuilding we learn that “home” can have as many meanings as there are people around to utter it. -Peter Goldberg
