GUATEMALA MISSION TRIP REPORT I woke up this morning to an electronic alarm, walked to my fully plumbed bathroom, and took a warm shower. I walked into my closet and chose what I would wear and then into my family room and turned on the TV to check the weather and news. From there, I went through my dining room to the kitchen, filled the Keurig with clean and safe water from my sink, made coffee and got something to eat out of the fridge. When finished, I left my home, locking the doors, got in my vehicle and drove the 5 miles to my work. This might sound like a typically morning in the life of someone who lives and works in Newnan, GA, but is not how a large portion of the world lives. With nearly 15 million in population, Guatemala has the largest economy in Central America, but around 60% of their population lives below the national poverty line of $2 per day (25% make less than $1 per day). That was not a typo, our lunch probably cost more than the majority of Guatemalans will make in a week. Shockingly, nearly 50% of Guatemalans live in inadequate housing, with about 1.25 million people living in homes made of cornstalks or scavenged materials. Education accounts for only 2.6% of Guatemala’s GDP and the average Guatemalan child will only go to school for 3.5 years. It is a very different place than Newnan, GA. On February 25th, 19 church members from Newnan First returned from a mission trip to Guatemala. While there our team had the opportunity to be God’s hands and feet as He built a new home for a family in San Raymundo. Gloria and Jennifer Patzan had lived in a home measuring about 16ft x 20ft with their extended family for the last 16 years (since Jennifer was born to Gloria). They had lived there together with 12 other people. What we built for them would be considered a shed here in America, but is was a mansion for them. We also had the opportunity to visit and participate in some classes at a school which is making a tremendous impact on their community as they fight to educate and change the course of life for as many Guatemalan children as they can. We saw and were able to participate in the work of the Kingdom as God is restoring and renewing a community of people in San Raymundo. I’d like to invite you to the Connect service this Sunday, March 11th at 11am in the Parish Hall as members of our Guatemalan mission team share their experiences from our time there. We’ll hear from adults and students on various different topics and views, and hopefully you’ll find encouragement to remember that…
