Did not commit an error in 32 games in the outfield after committing seven errors each of his first two seasons • Spent first three professional seasons with the Kalamazoo Kings of the independent Frontier League playing for manager Fran Riordan, who spent the 2003 season with the North Shore Spirit in the Northeast League. • In 2008, finished fifth in Frontier League walks (63) and fourth in triples (5). • Starred at Rutgers University from 2003-2006. Best Major League season came in 2005 when he hit .285 with 5 HRs and 44 RBIs in 139 games with St. Louis Cardinals while filling in for 3B Scott Rolen following Rolen’s collision with Dodgers’ 1B Hee Seop Choi on 5/10/05. Rolen needed left shoulder surgery. First MLB hit was a two-run triple off Dodgers’ Dennys Reyes on 8/27/97. First career HR came off Phillies’ Mark Portugal at Veterans Stadium on 9/12/98. Signed as nondrafted free agent by Toronto Blue Jays on 5/5/94 and made Major League debut on 8/27/97 with Pittsburgh Pirates. Has played over 250 Major League games at third base, second base, and shortstop. Was a New York-Penn League All-Star shortstop in 1996 with St. Catherines Stompers, when he was second in the league with 37 stolen bases. The Pittsfield Mets were also part of the New York-Penn League that season.

2009 w/ American Defenders of New Hampshire (IND): 68 games, .269 avg, 5 HR, 30 RBIs, 3-5 SB • Was acquired by New Jersey via trade from the Pittsfield Colonials on June 18 in exchange for OF Quentin Davis and C Scott Knazek. • Prior to being traded to New Jersey, was batting .192 with two RBIs in 17 games for Pittsfield in 2010. • In his first professional season in 2009 with the American Defenders of New Hampshire, Chavez hit .269 with five HRs and 30 RBIs in 68 games while throwing out 33% of runners (second-best in the Can-Am League) • Was drafted out of high school by the Kansas City Royals in the 19th round in 2005, but did not sign. • Played freshman and sophomore seasons at Palomar Junior College in 2006 and 2007 seasons. At Palomar, Chavez was errorless in 181 chances and threw out 30 of 56 attempted base stealers (53.5%). • Transferred to Division I Indiana State University for his junior season in 2008 season and hit .224 in 23 games (15 starts) for the Sycamores. •

Finished his college career at Lindenwood University (NAIA) in 2009.
