My friend Katie met Sam at a Campus Crusade for Christ meeting during their first week at university. And she was impressed! Not only did Sam exhibit spiritual maturity and natural leadership skills, he was also handsome and a lot of fun to be around. Soon, they both accepted ministry responsibilities with Campus Crusade and began working together. Katie quickly decided Sam was the man for her. Unfortunately, Sam hadn’t reached the same conclusion. Over the next few years, Sam and Katie continued to spend a lot of time around each other through their ministries with Campus Crusade. They developed a strong friendship, but Katie longed for more. So she decided to help Sam along, to woo him with her sweet attention. Since the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, Katie baked cookies for Sam. She regularly managed to run into him as they both crossed campus on their way to classes. Katie used her artistic talent to create a special drawing of a bird with a passage from Ephesians. She also gave him other gifts that reminded him of their mutual love for Jesus, like a hymnal and cross-stitched Scripture. Katie appealed to Sam’s fun side by mailing him a pumpkin through the campus post office. One summer Katie even traveled to visit Sam in another state where he was doing short-term ministry. However, more than all these demonstrations of affection, Katie prayed for Sam. Katie also prayed for herself. She asked God to take away her desire for Sam if the longing was not from Him. WH
