A seaside town steeped in history. Thwaytes Court is located in the seaside town of Herne Bay, situated on the Kent coast in the district of Canterbury. The seafront of Herne Bay stretches two miles and was awarded the European Blue Award for its safety and cleanliness. Features along this picturesque beach include the clock tower, the sea defence jetty and fresh seafood restaurants for your enjoyment. The name Thwaytes Court which celebrates Mrs Ann Thwaytes, a wealthy woman from London who donated £4,000 to build a clock tower on the sea front. This is believed to be the first freestanding purpose built clock tower in the world. The town’s pier has been dismantled and restored many times over the centuries and, during World War II, a sea-fort was built off of the coast of Herne Bay and Whitstable, which is still in existence today. To the East of Herne Bay is Reculver, this was the testing site for the bouncing bomb used by the ‘Dam Busters’ during the war.
