Opening knight In schools across the borough, young people are learning about knights, bishops, kings and queens though the mind-boggling game of chess. But this is no closed tournament. If you’d like to learn how to play, or practice with your chess mates, head to Stratford Library. More than 300 children enjoyed a day of chess fun and games to celebrate the launch of chess classes in Newham’s primary schools and libraries. They were joined at Stratford Library by British chess champion, grandmaster Gawain Jones, who took on Mayor Sir Robin Wales and children from Ravenscroft School, Canning Town, on a giant interactive board. Chess sets and lessons are being introduced in 14 schools, with the aim of expanding to all 64 primary schools by 2015. It is thanks to a partnership between Newham Council, charity Chess in Schools and Communities, and East Village, the first legacy neighbourhood from the 2012 Games. As well as promoting chess in schools, the partnership will develop chess clubs and lessons in libraries and hopes to set up a borough team, a chess festival, and provide giant chess sets in parks. Sir Robin said: “Chess is a great way for our young people to build confidence, concentration and problem-solving skills. I hope as many as possible take up the opportunity to play this wonderful game.” Stratford Library’s Chess Club is now open to all. Come along to The Grove, E15 every Thursday from 5.30-7.30pm.

Amira, 8, Carpenters Primary School, E15 “I like playing board games with my friends. Chess is a fun game, it’s not too difficult to play and it’s not too easy either.”

Abida, 10, Ravenscroft Primary School, E16 “I play chess at school and I practise at home with my dad. You have to think carefully about your move because otherwise you might lose the game.” Yusuf, 9, Carpenters Primary School, E15 “I used to play chess with my brother at the weekend. It is fun and I like winning. Now I know how to use all the pieces I find it easy.”

Daniel, 8, Ravenscroft Primary School, E16 “I started playing chess when I was three. It makes me use my brain a lot. One day I might be so good that I can teach chess.”
