Graduates’ Feedback
19
Message of Congratulations from the Principal It is a pleasure to welcome you to the very first graduation ceremony of Newham University Centre. Four years ago, NUC welcomed its first students and a new era of higher education for the college was born. Our aim is to give students a high level of individual support, underpinned by committed and skilled teaching in small, personal groups. The outstanding accomplishments of the graduates here this evening provide convincing proof that we are succeeding. Our graduates have shown perseverance, great effort, hard work and the highest levels of learning, skills and knowledge in achieving their goals. Their success has often been hard won but, with drive and determination, they have overcome whatever obstacles stood in their way. The friends they have made, the experiences they have enjoyed (and, perhaps, some they haven’t!) will stay with them all their lives. They are exceptional people. They have also received exceptional support - from family and friends, from their peers, from employers and from teachers and college staff. I congratulate all of them too. In the end, though, tonight is about our graduates. Their hard work has been rewarded, not only by the very considerable achievement of graduating successfully, but by the excellent career and further study opportunities that are now open to them. I know an exciting and rewarding future lies ahead for all our graduates. Tonight is their night. They have truly earned it.

Mission Statement
History of Newham College & Newham University Centre Newham College of Further Education was established by the London Borough of Newham in 1985 to ‘to better serve the needs of the people of Newham’. It resulted from a merger between East Ham technical college based at the campus on High Street South and West Ham technical college in Stratford. The College has six further local neighbourhood learning centres and a number of innovative subsidiaries.
also partners with UEL, Westminster University and Cambridge ESOL in the delivery of education courses and Edexcel in the delivery of HNC and HNDs.
The Centre for Innovation and Partnerships was established in 1997 by Newham College to open up new ways of training and support for individuals and businesses. It utilises European and other regeneration funds working collaboratively with a wide range of partners. The College developed and operates the Fashion and Textile Museum. The museum is a cutting edge centre for contemporary fashion, textiles and jewellery near London Bridge and was originally founded by iconic British designer Zandra Rhodes. The College developed New Horizons London which is the London franchise of the global IT training business, New Horizons. The Women’s Business Centre specialises in business training and NewTec provides childcare facilities.
HNC/D Hair and Beauty
The two technical colleges have a history going back to the turn of the 1900s. The West Ham Municipal Technical Institute on Romford Road was dubbed ‘the people’s university’ at the opening ceremony in 1900. It provided courses in science, engineering, including its own degrees, and art. It had a ‘Women’s Department’ teaching secretarial and other skills. Later it became a technical college and then split into a further education college and into departments that eventually became part of the University of East London. In 1871, the local education board organised evening classes in chemistry, mathematics, the use of tools, building, cookery, shorthand, and ‘ambulance’. This became a school and college called the East Ham Technical Institute in 1905 near the town hall in Barking Road. Opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales, the college included carpenters’ and plumbers’ shops, a building department, and a clinical laboratory. Plashet and Langdon schools were created after the war as well as the East Ham Technical College of Building. In 1962 a new technical college was built and by 1967, it had around 10,000 students.

History of Newham College & Newham University Centre
Over the last three years the University Centre has grown with over 650 students now studying on higher education courses. We are delighted and honoured to say that this is the first cohort of students graduating from the centre. The centre offers the following programmes:
HNC Advanced Practice in Children and Families CELTA: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages PCET: PGCE and Certificate in Education BA/BSc (Hons) Counselling Studies (CBT and Integrative Therapy) BA/BSc (Hons) Combined Studies with pathways in Business and Management, Counselling Studies, Education Studies, English, Politics, Psychology and Sociology. BSc (Hons) Psychology and BSc (Hons) Child and Adolescent Psychology (both with the prestigious BPS accreditation) BA (Hons) Business and Management BA (Hons) Business, Organisational Behaviour and Coaching BA (Hons) Leadership and Management (top up) MA Integrative Counselling Studies Today Newham College has an enormous range and variety of provision. With over 10,000 funded students, it has two main campuses in East Ham and Stratford and a number of local centres delivering learning in the heart of local communities in and around the London borough of Newham. Although Newham College has delivered higher education for many years the development of Newham University Centre (or University Centre Stratford as it was initially named) heralded a growth in the college’s provision of higher education.
MA Specialist Counselling Studies The centre is dedicated to offering high quality, affordable education (with most course fees at £4,500), and providing opportunities to students who might otherwise not be able to access higher education. As a relatively small university centre we strive for, and value, the high levels of contact we can provide between students and staff. Lecture groups are comparatively small and the largest consists of 50-60 students, and most interaction happens in much smaller seminar groups and tutorials.
This development began with the institutional validation of Newham College with both The Open University and Leeds Metropolitan University in 2009. The Centre

Academic Gowns The Cappa Clausa was the first academic robe worn in medieval universities. These original gowns were used on top of clothes in an attempt to keep the academic warm. From the 15th century the hood became an impractical piece of headwear due to wigs and ruffs and so was worn down the back.
Partners in Learning Some of the gowns worn today
Over time the shape and colour of gowns and hoods has become strictly regulated. With rules originating from the medieval and tudor ‘sumptuary laws’, the laws which governed who was entitled to wear which colours.
Westminster University
Through its partnerships with a range of institutions worldwide, The Open University (OU) validates awards which have parity of esteem with awards offered throughout UK higher education. So a validated award is exactly the same as an OU direct award in terms of employment and application for postgraduate study. The OU’s validation activity supports the University centre’s mission to widen access to higher education. NUC have been able to take full advantage of this and offer an exciting range of programmes.
Newham College is a recent member of Westminster University’s consortium delivering education courses.
Leeds Metropolitan University
This later included different colours for differing levels of qualifications. The Burgon Society is an organisation which promotes the study of academic dress. For more information on this subject see the following: www.marstonrobing.com www.burgon.org.uk
The Open University

Leeds Metropolitan University has its origins in the 1800’s. It now has a student body of 29,000. NUC was part of its impressive Regional University Network, which enabled students to gain experience through coaching, flexible learning approaches, festivals & celebrations. NUC lecturers were able to take advantage of opportunities to explore innovative research, curriculum developments, personal development and share best practice across the Network.
Edexcel Edexcel, a Pearson company, is the UK’s largest awarding body, offering academic and vocational qualifications, including HNC and HNDs.
Cambridge ESOL Cambridge ESOL provide the world’s leading range of qualifications for learners and teachers of English; their expertise stems from over 100 years of language learning and assessment backed by outstanding support for learners and teachers and by world-class research and quality management. There are many graduate recruitment events in London throughout the year, we will keep you informed about events coming up that we recommend you attend. They are excellent for networking and finding out what is going on in your area of work. We also run workshops and employer talks at NUC, you’ll be invited by email whenever these are booked.
