River for the people, bar none By Mike O’Connor Easy access to the river is one of the defining features of life in Teneriffe.

Its river walk is enjoyed by people from all over the city with significant public funds spent in constructing and maintaining it. What a shame it would be, then, if the commercial interests of a few were to impinge upon the simple pleasures of many. It’s an issue raised by a proposal to be put to the owners of apartments in Mactaggarts Place, the riverfront complex in Vernon Terrace, Teneriffe, at their body corporate’s annual general meeting on May 5. It asks them for approval to spend $30,000 to “fence and landscape the northern grounds…’’ An explanatory note states that “the northern grounds area is currently not utilised for the benefit of the body corporate and it is proposed to develop the grounds and provide further pergola and BBQ areas for

residents’ use enhancing the value of Mactaggarts for the benefit of all owners”. The public has long enjoyed access from Vernon Terrace to the riverwalk on a pathway between the apartment complex and its car park. Surely it is not the intention of the body corporate to fence this off and bar river access to the public? I contacted Mactaggarts Place manager Martyn Tiller who refused to comment, demanding instead to know who had told me of the proposal, a demand I refused. Asked to deny that it was intended to fence off the river access, he said: “I won’t make a comment either way.” Asked if he was prepared to say that the resolution referred to the pathway and its attendant grassy areas along the river he said: “No. Unless you’re prepared to tell me who approached you.” Teneriffe is about the river. Any attempt to limit access to the public should be resisted, if that is the intent here. If it’s not, then surely there is no harm in saying so.

COUNCIL CONNECTIONS Sandakan and Submariners shone on ANZAC day

The ANZAC spirit certainly shone through our suburbs last week. Here at Brisbane City Council we are committed to ensuring our local war memorials are in top condition for residents to pay their respects, and are pleased so many locals commented on the beautiful new stonework around the Sandakan Memorial in New Farm Park. We want to protect the memorial for future generations and recently secured the funds for a major restoration of the site. These works include new seating and stonework, and garden beds. Along with Teresa Gambaro MP we ensured new flags for the Submariners Heritage Trail at Teneriffe fluttered this ANZAC Day – we are dedicated to ensuring our fallen heroes continue to be commemorated at shining local memorials.

Ivory Lane Walkway Widening We are pleased to let you know that we recently procured funds to undertake major maintenance work on the Ivory Lane walkway – the project is currently underway. The walkway was at the end of its design life and required replacement due to the deteriorating timber structure. It will be replaced with a durable concrete and fibre composite structure to provide a safe pedestrian and cyclist connection to and from the Story Bridge, City Reach Boardwalk and New Farm Riverwalk. We are determined to continue to invest in lifestyle and leisure improvements so that residents are able to enjoy the outdoors in Central Ward. The new walkway will be wider with an improved decking surface and additional lighting for pedestrian and cyclist safety.

IDAHOT Day Lights Up the Story Bridge On Tuesday 17 May people from all over the world will come together to mark International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia IDAHOT Day. We are glad to show our Council’s support once again by lighting the Story Bridge and flying Vicki with Gai Lemon, Director, the Rainbow Flag on City Hall. Brian Black said he wasn’t aware of any issues that would sway his vote and he based his vote “probably more on the leaders”.

Alexandra Conley said: “There’s a lot of street dumping and noise from tenants we have around our way that isn’t policed or looked after.” She would base her vote on the “local candidate, definitely”.

Sarah Nicholas with Theodore.

Co-working great for business and your social life By Stephen Clarke NEW Farm local Sarah Nicholas runs her own business, findagreatnanny. com, which helps parents find reliable and trustworthy nannies. Like other self-employed professionals, she needed somewhere to work that was out of the house. “I started working at home but it was lonely and it’s too easy to get distracted,” said Sarah. She found that she lived just around the corner from a co-working office. It’s called Salt Space and is nestled in a heritage building right at the heart of New Farm’s bustling Merthyr Village. Sarah said it was a great creative co-working space for professionals, businesses, freelancers and remote workers. Salt Space is air-conditioned throughout and offers a range of desk options, from a desk at the roomy co-working space to a private studio.

Sarah has been using Salt Space since May last year. “I decided to come in here and try it out and it’s been great. “You make really nice friends and meet people who can give you advice on things. “Salt Space is quite relaxed but can still be very professional. “Some other co-work spaces aren’t as well taken care of or have dark little rooms. This is the most friendly I’ve been to.” Having worked as a nanny and trained as a psychologist, and with a baby of her own, Sarah said she knows what to look for in a nanny. “My recruitment process is pretty rigorous so I’ve managed to find a group of nannies that I’m very happy to send out on jobs. “Something I ask myself: ‘Would I leave my baby with these people?’ If I feel comfortable doing that, they get through.” Saltspace is located at Level 1, 888 Brunswick St, New Farm QLD 4005

NEARLY 6 million Australians, or one-in-three people older than 15, volunteer some of their time every year. This means about $25 billion of unpaid labour contributed to the Australian economy each year, about 75 per cent of it to not-for-profit organisations. According to data provided by Volunteering Australia, the most popular areas of volunteering are sport/recreation and welfare/ community. National Volunteer Week runs next week (May 9-15) to highlight volunteering. One local organisation, Footprints in Newstead, benefits from volunteers, who help people who are experiencing social and financial disadvantage. Footprints CEO Cherylee Treloar said these included people with disabilities, older people, people with mental health issues, and people who were homeless or have complex needs. Volunteers support the work of Footprints from administration to touch football games, organising events to art and craft, cutting hair to cooking meals and much more, said Ms Treloar. And while volunteers are not paid, she said volunteers at Footprints felt

it was very rewarding and beneficial. “There is a wealth of research that demonstrates the positive correlation between volunteering and healthy aging,” Ms Treloar said. Volunteer Coordinator Sabina Nowak said Footprints had invested a lot of resources into ensuring volunteers are adequately supported. Janice Norman, activities support volunteer with the centre-based activities program, said it was her way of “giving back what I have received”. Footprints volunteer hairdresser and owner of the successful Northside salons The Hairologists, Arren Heely, said: “We don’t do it for certificates and recognition. “When talking to some of the homeless guys and hearing they could be in that situation from just one bad decision, it is a reality check for us.” A Footprints client, Donna, said she really appreciated the volunteers who give their time and the difference they had made in her life. THE Footprints community centre has started its move from Commercial Road to 24 Light Street, Fortitude Valley. Executive officer Andrea James said services were suspended on April 22 and programs would resume on Monday May 9. “Our Homeless Outreach Program will resume on Wednesday May 25,” she said. “We plan a launch of the new building in June and welcome interest from local residents, so don’t hesitate to contact us, our contact details remain the same (07) 3252 3488.” Ms James said Footprints in Brisbane started in 1991 as the New Farm Community Options Program under the auspices of the New Farm Neighbourhood Centre. It became an incorporated association in 1995, moved to Sydney Street and changed its name and became Footprints in 2005. From three staff in 1991, today Footprints employs more than 100 people and provides a range of community based services in the Brisbane metropolitan area. “Over the past 25 years Footprints has kept to its vision of walking beside people offering support where needed to assist them to stay at home and live independently,” Ms James said. “Footprints has become a highly regarded not-for-profit across the community sector and Government. “It has been recognised for providing support for people with disabilities, older people, their carers and families, people with mental-health issues, and people who are experiencing social and financial disadvantage and those at risk of homelessness or homeless persons. “Over the last several months, we have been preparing our new premises and thanks to our many clients, staff and other supporters for their goodwill as we make these changes.”

Practice also specialises in LGBTQI support By Timothy Swanston IT’S been only six months since opening but the Central Clinical Psychology Practice (CCPP) is already delivering specialist psychology services to Brisbane residents. Dr Michael John, principal clinical psychologist at CCPP, said the practice was very “values” based. “We provide a broad array of clinical psychology services based upon a social justice ethos, and so are pleased to offer bulk-billing to persons referred by their doctor,” he said. “For persons without a GP we do offer as a professional courtesy, a brief consultation to talk about their needs and to talk with them about options in terms of them moving into therapy.” Dr John specialises in cognitive behavioral therapy, which he said was the cornerstone of the practice. He said the practice was particularly interested in helping people with complex and multi-layered concerns. “With such presentations, intervention is never a ‘fix the symptoms’ undertaking but rather, a personal growth process, focused upon those ends to which a person aspires.” Other facets of the practice were family and relationship problems and support

Community spirit makes a great contribution HERE’S a sentence that has been mentioned to me so many times of late: “Oh wow! Only two months until the Teneriffe Festival! You must be excited?”

since the first year but our seventh sees the concept being re-invigorated.

teneriffefestival By Jillian Kingsford Smith

And while I am excited, I’m also full of anticipation. There’re so many moving parts to this festival and it doesn’t necessarily become easier each year … it just becomes more familiar. This is aided enormously by the fabulous team we have built to develop the annual event. I’d particularly like to mention two of those people who have approached us to volunteer their time in areas we needed assistance. James Meale, a Teneriffe local and the owner of design firm Graf-X (www. graf-x.com.au) has been working with us to create a unique logotype for the Tastes of Teneriffe, a sub-brand of the festival. We can’t wait to re-launch the Tastes of Teneriffe. It’s something we’ve had around

The Tastes of Teneriffe celebrates the vibrancy of our suburb through food. Long known as the home to some of Brisbane’s most iconic restaurants, Teneriffe similarly attracts the trendsetters of hospitality, those keen to feed the latest trends or revive good old-fashioned service and atmosphere. In a nutshell, we’re all about the Wine, Dine, Coffee and Brew! If your establishment is interested in participating in Tastes of Teneriffe 2016 please log your details at www. teneriffefestival.org/contact I’d also like to welcome Lynn Hunt to the team. Lynn is heading up our volunteer program, which is understandably an important

resource. Lynn approached me late last year as she was moving into the area in August and wanted to start meeting people and integrating into the community ahead of that. What a champion! She hasn’t even moved into the suburb yet and she wants to give up her time to assist with the festival. If you’re interested in volunteering some time on the day, simply submit an application and Lynn will be in touch. www.teneriffefestival.org/ volunteer Last but not least, I’ll be hosting an information evening on Monday May 9 at 6pm at the Railwayman’s Shed, 29 Macquarie Street. We’ll talk a little bit about the various festival activities planned for this year and also have representatives from the Brisbane City Council Festival’s Liaison Office and Queensland Police Service to answer questions. I hope to see you there. Jillian Kingsford Smith can be contacted at hello@teneriffefestival. org

That girl from Killarney bakes up a storm THERE was once this girl from Killarney – a bright-eyed, talented girl named Jocelyn Hancock who grew up on Braeside, the Hancock family farm of 650 acres (263 hectares).

villagepeople by Gary Balkin

She was inquisitive and passionate about growing and producing food and the hills and paddocks of Killarney were green and lush with grass. Killarney was – and still is – a quiet country town on the Darling Downs, south-east of Warwick, not far from the New South Wales border. The five waterfalls surrounding Killarney made the town and countryside a scenic tourism destination. A secondary-school work experience period at Robert Weis’ famous top-of-the-Toowoombarange establishment, Weis’ Restaurant, opened Jocelyn’s eyes immeasurably. “I saw the retail side of catering

for the first time, and I was hooked,” she told me. “It was so different and so practical. My Mum and grandmother had taught me much about cooking at home, and suddenly I craved experience and new ideas.” Jocelyn now knew her direction. “I grew with a very strong work ethic from my parents and now I am trying to teach my two sons the same ethic. But that Weis’ experience set me on my way.” Robert “Rags” Ridgway assisted Jocelyn’s chef’s apprenticeship path with much of her apprenticeship served at his premier Rags Restaurant in Caxton Street. From the multi-award winning Rags, Jocelyn became really inspired in her quest to be trained in baking great delicacies. She went to London for two years, mostly at Gunthorpe Hall, then Sally Clarke’s Bakery, then crossed the Channel to Paris to the Ritz Hotel for a twomonth period of intensive pastry coursework. “Going to England and France was an important part of my career,” Jocelyn insisted. There is no doubt this experience was the defining period

Jocelyn Hancock at her Teneriffe home. of her life. When she returned to Australia, Jocelyn worked at Baguette then she was off to Melbourne to work with Stephanie Alexander at her signature restaurant. Next was her first move to a small holding in an old nursing home kitchen at Hill End, Brisbane and she began to establish Jocelyn’s Provisions. At Hill End, Jocelyn had a good kitchen but she said the site was disadvantaged in some respects. She began to supply the Broncos catering team with cornbread, loaves and buns, for their 1400 sit-down diners fortnightly at home games. It was at the former migrant centre, Yungaba where I, the writer, was able to offer – as an option – a sub-lease of the large kitchen with its big ovens and prep areas to the rising star Jocelyn. This same kitchen had once fed up to 300 immigrants three times a day, every day. We were all proud of its history, from the late 19th century, but particularly post World War II when the floods of European migrants landed there on the jetty … which

is no longer there. Yungaba’s heritage had been like that of New York’s Ellis Island in the US, near the Statue of Liberty, where migrants were first processed on arrival. There were about 80 nations represented in small tenancies in the then-Yungaba precinct in 1994-2002 or later. Jocelyn stayed there for two years but looked afield again after securing a Qantas contract, and others. My supervisor at Yungaba, Annette Costello, often used Jocelyn’s breads, cornbread and her famous cakes and tarts in catering to our ex-European neighbours in the Yungaba precinct. “I can remember when one morning I entered the big kitchen,” said Annette. “Jocelyn was showing me some of her freshly baked bread. “She took out a loaf from the oven and held it like it was a precious baby, and described to me the contents of her creation. “The look on her face and the gentle way she held the loaf was wonderful.

Minister Fysh makes a splash

Makeover for soccer fields a success

The Merthyr Road Uniting Church welcomed Rev Murray Fysh last month to lead the parish in New Farm. He came to the position after having what he called “a conversation” with the church. He said he felt he wouldn’t accept a position here then woke up with an enthusiasm that he could do much for the New Farm community. “So I take it as a ‘call of God’, which is really hard because I don’t have a theology that goes that way,” Mr Fysh said. “I think I saw a huge amount of potential in the church being engaged in this community.” Mr Fysh comes to the position with a wealth of experience and an impressive resume, most recently working as the chaplain manager of pastoral care at Wesley Hospital in Auchenflower. “I think I have a rather pragmatic understanding of how God works in the community,” he said. “It’s about helping people to reconcile to each other, to the land, to God, to whomever and that way we lead to a community that actually is a community of substance.” An area of concern that Mr Fysh

Rev Murray Fysh. has identified is loneliness in the New Farm peninsula. “Survey results suggest there are 11,000 in the New Farm peninsula area but only 8000 residences, so a huge number of people live by themselves,” he said. “I think one of the predominant community needs, which never comes out of these survey results, is loneliness.” Mr Fysh said he was considering a move to New Farm with his wife, a theological college lecturer. “We have an incredibly valuable community infrastructure here that has not been developed fully,” he said. “One of the things I’m really interested in doing is creating a community hub.”

By Timothy Swanston THE kids seem to love the newly upgraded soccer fields at New Farm Park. President of New Farm United Soccer Club Barry Neighbour said the works had made a big impact for the club. “All the teams are reporting that it’s more fun than ever to play on, it’s just fabulous,” he said. “If we had to try to find that sort of funding for repairs it would mean we would have to raise registration fees and reduce our spending in other areas.” Central Ward Councillor Vicki Howard committed $227,000 towards the project to improve safety and the conditions of the much-loved fields. “This field is a major recreational hub for the New Farm community and is regularly used for a range of purposes including personal training and other sports,” Cr Howard said. “The dry condition of the fields was posing a safety risk for park users, which is why Council carried out these works as a priority.” As part of the works, council upgraded the irrigation system, graded

Cr Vicki Howard with Phil Witulski director of coaching, New Farm United Soccer Club Front row: (left to right) Sterling Moran, Ben Vickery, Nicholas Vega de Seoane, Rose Fogarty and Julian Treasure the existing surface and then laid new turf. Mr Neighbour said the club had unique circumstances, with its fields being part of the well-used and much loved New Farm Park. “We don’t have the opportunity to rest any of the areas for minor repairs which means we can’t treat it like a normal soccer field 365 days of the year. “As a club we are extremely thankful to Council, particularly to Vicki to help underwrite that without cost to the club.”

That whole ‘driven’ thing is in the genes

I LOVE to drive. I get a whole-body experience when I drive.

villageview by Beth J Leach I love changing gears with my left hand, steering with my right, depressing the clutch with my left foot, accelerating with my right. I love the sound of the engine roaring, the clunk of the boot, the close of a well-built door, the throb of the stereo, a tick-tocking indicator. And I especially love the feel of the wheel on my fingers, the curve of a handle’s grip in my palm, working through a smooth, six-speed gear box, being cradled by a bucket seat. I love the “new car” smell, the smell of petrol and oil and the leather interior package. I love an exterior with confident attitude, one that hints at all kinds of possibilities, capable, exciting, sexy, robust. But most of all I love the freedom that driving presents, right now, maybe later, when you want it, it’s there, take it.

I haven’t always driven. I was a late starter and learnt in London at 28. My dad had said that owning a car would keep me poor so I didn’t learn. Ironically, I didn’t get the first job interview I went for as a graduate because I couldn’t drive. I decided that when I had kids I was going to encourage their independence through this rite of passage to adulthood and help them embrace the challenge. Well, that time has come. I’m a patient teacher, calm, empathetic, white-knuckled, tense. The 100 hours learners must spend behind the wheel are accumulating slowly for our 16-year-old. Our morning drive before I go to work is to our son’s school down Sandgate Road: 70km an hour then red lights, brake, find the tipping point, let’s go, orange means stop at the line, ORANGE NOT GREEN. STOP, LINE! I arrive at work these days a little unnerved but grateful and happy to be fulfilling how I wanted to turn out as a parent. And I stare down the barrel at our next two children, fast forward five and seven years, their personalities and what lies ahead and I think to myself, “You’re a good woman, Beth Leach. You’re a good woman.” And I still love to drive.

Sleeves up for new principal

Students (from left) Nico, Pippy, Harrison, Bridget welcome Miss Davis. ONLY two school terms “in” and new Holy Spirit Primary School principal Kim Davis is enjoying her time in the role and supporting community involvement. “One of the amazing things is that parent engagement is really high and it’s a very important component to this school,” said Mrs Davis. “We are an inclusive community, we welcome people from different family situations and I think that one of our jobs is that we make sure nobody fits into one box.” Mrs Davis has previously been in roles as an assistant principal and administration as well as working for the Australian Catholic Bishop’s Conference in Canberra. “I’ve had enough leadership within schools and church that I found that this was my time to apply to be a principal and I feel that I can make a contribution to this community,” she said. Holy Spirit has a new building project on the way to meet extra demands. “I think in the past people have been disappointed because they haven’t been able to enroll their children here but to respond to that demand, we’ve got a building

project this year,” she said. “I think we’re responding to great educational research, we are providing a state-of-the-art educational experience for the children while providing amazing facilities at the same time,” she said. The project will make room for two more classes of every grade level throughout the school along with a new staff room and a new toilet block for children. Work is expected to be complete and ready for Semester 1 next year. The school P&F is currently seeking sponsorship and donations from local businesses in preparation for the annual Holy Spirit Fete that will be on Sunday September 11 this year. “Since my arrival at Holy Spirit School I have heard great things about the fete…or should I say community event of the year!” If you would like to help out at the fete or profile your business to the community, please get in touch with the fete coordinator Karen Searle on 33582344 “We look forward to everyone in the community joining in the fun of this event!”

It’s for the band, dear … not for you AS a child, Teresa Gambaro danced on the bandstand in New Farm Park to the applause of the people who gathered there on Sunday afternoons.

By Mike O’Connor

She was distraught when her mother eventually broke the news to her that they were applauding the band, not her dancing. It did not deter her from pursuing her ambition to demonstrate her talents before a much larger audience by being elected to represent the federal seat of Petrie from 1996 to 2004. She was defeated at the 2007 general election but went on to win the federal seat of Brisbane in 2010 and again in 2013. She recently announced she would not contest the seat in the upcoming election and would retire from politics. I caught up with her over takeaway coffee as she looked back on her career and recalled growing up in New Farm as we sat on a bench in the park where she once danced. “It wasn’t very fashionable when I was a teenager going to school at All Hallows to say to people that you came from New Farm,” she says. “You were almost ashamed of it because all my mates lived at Kenmore and Indooroopilly. “They were the upwardly mobile suburbs where people lived in brick houses. If you lived in New Farm, people felt sorry for you. “I had aspirations of living at Indooroopilly,” she says smiling. “It’s all changed now, of course.” The Gambaro family has long been apart of the fabric of “old” New Farm, opening its first supermarket in the Sixties in Sydney Street. “I’m passionate about this place,” she says. “My mother still lives here and I was working behind the counter in our corner store from the age of 8. “When we had the store, we used to deliver groceries. “Coles and Woolworths now go on as if home delivery is some new invention. “We were doing it in the Sixties. If people were ill, we’d deliver their groceries and give them some TLC. “That’s the way it was then. “I once saw my mother embracing the actor Jack Thompson. She’s hugging him and they looked to be very intimate. “I said to her: `Is there something you haven’t told me here?’ “She told me that when he was a young, struggling actor living in New

Farm she used to let him put his cigarettes on the tick when he didn’t have any money.” Teresa has watched as the suburb has experienced a fundamental shift. “The area has totally changed which is good and bad. “I remember when you could go to the movies at the Village Twin and park your car outside. “The pace of life here has quickened but it still has a good community spirit. “People do help each other and want to be involved in that. “The older residents are trying to adjust to the influx of people and you still have a lot of the older Italian generation living here. “When they made good, they moved out to places like Lutwyche and Carseldine and built the big houses but a lot of them then came back to live in New Farm,” she says. Teresa remembers the work ethic that drove those early migrants. “Dad would go off and work in the tile factory and Mum would work at the Coca-Cola factory. “They grew their own vegetables, they never went on holidays and before too long, they didn’t just own their own house but they’d own two investment properties. “They worked and worked and worked.” She points to the diversity of the suburb’s residents as the essence of its character. “There’s the boarding houses, the community centre, the cottages and people living in the high-rise apartments on the river. “It’s still got a sense of community and people like that diversity and the fact that anyone can live here,” she says. In the course of her political career, Teresa served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministers for Defence, Foreign Affairs and Immigration and Citizenship and was Assistant Minister for Immigration and Citizenship. They were positions that gave her the opportunity to engage with the wider Australian community. “When we had the Lebanese-Israeli war break out there were a lot of Australians stuck in the war zone. “Getting out and working with our DFAT people was uplifting and helping people when they come to Australia is something I’ve always been passionate about. “I know what it’s like not to speak English. I couldn’t speak English very well when I started school so I know how difficult that can be,” she recalls. “I’ve done a lot of work with the homeless and worked with the Broncos who do a lot with indigenous players. “The day-to-day stuff that doesn’t

go in the media is what it’s about, like getting a life-saving drug for someone and as a federal member you can do this and ring a pharmaceutical company on behalf of your constituent.” Asked about her plans for the future, she says that at the moment, she has none. “I am going to have a break for a few months and I will do something down the track. “Whatever it is, the first criteria will be that I help people, the second that there’s no politics and the third is that it has to be something I’m passionate about so I’ll probably do something in the not-for-profit sector. “It’s lovely to go of your own choosing,” she says of her decision to retire. “My husband hasn’t stopped smiling since I announced my retirement and he has already told me he will be weaning me off the news and current affairs programs which are my addiction.

Teresa Gambaro. “I’m looking forward to being with my friends, some of whom have put up with me for 30 years. “It’s now time for a new beginning and I think that I can honestly look back and say that it’s been a wonderful career. “Somebody once described politics as a career of highs and lows and tears and cheers, and that pretty much sums it up,” she says.

BAYSIDE was “playside” when these stars of Shakespeare’s The Tempest hit the shores of Margate on Moreton Bay last month. The actors, accompanied by their director and several photographers, were hoping for a few location shots for their production which starts this month at Merthyr Road Uniting Church, New Farm. There were a few strange looks from passersby as they strode along Marine Parade in character for their roles: Prospero in his flowing magic cloak, Ariel in a shining silver suit and Trinculo in his jester’s cap and bells. The sun shone and there was not a cloud in the sky (let alone a tempest) but they bore the heat bravely. The Tempest opens on at 7.30pm on Saturday May 14 at Merthyr Road Uniting Church New Farm and is also part of Anywhere Festival. Further information visit www.nashtheatre.com

New Farm playwright, vibrant and articulate FOR 19 years, playwright Lorna Bol and her husband Rudy called New Farm home. They arrived in Brisbane at Christmas of 1973, having spent four years running a motel in Byron Bay.

historicalsociety by Gerard Benjamin

They were looking for a house that wasn’t in a hollow so they settled on a cottage with some elevation at 49 Kingsholme Street. This was within sight of the Hawthorne Ferry and the Macquarie Street wharves. It was a prescient choice. When the city flooded to record levels weeks later, the Bols stayed dry. Not so lucky was their Sicilian neighbour whose backyard, fully planted with vegetables, was inundated. The couple had met in Sydney during World War II. Rudy, from Dutch-Indonesia, had been a fighter pilot in the Dutch Air Force but the war required him to switch to the Royal Netherlands Navy. His duties involved shipping supplies and troops to New Guinea. Lorna, on the other hand, grew up

in the back stages of Sydney theatres, though she also did a stint as a top model. Her mother, Ursula Anderson, was a well-known concert singer who had performed with the Opera Theatre in London and her father had aspired to opera singing. “In those days, New Farm was very Italian,” said Lorna. “There were so many foreigners and that’s what we liked most. “The area was very cosmopolitan and I relished this. “We shopped in the Valley especially to buy Indonesian food.” Neighbours told Lorna that the home’s previous owners were an elderly couple, Joseph Francis and his wife Nora. The house had been in their name for 54 years. Mr Francis’s father and two of his sisters lived nearby during the 1930s at “Dalveen”, hardly a block away on the corner of Kingsholme and Annie Streets (See Village News, November last year). Now 92 years old and living in her granny flat at the back of her daughter’s house at The Gap, Lorna has been involved in theatre all of her life. She acted, directed, and worked backstage at the La Boite Theatre, as well as assisting front-of-house and baking cakes. “La Boite always offered wine and fruit cake at interval,” she said.

Room at the top for new blood The CEO of National Seniors, Michael O’Neill, has decided to move on after 10 very productive years at the helm.

seniorsvoice by Tony Townsend

He has been able to exploit his personal contacts with politicians, business and the media to advance the cause of all seniors and leaves a large pair of shoes to fill. In an age dominated by the internet and social media, it is difficult sometimes to remember the importance of regular face-toface conversation. How often does one see couples at cafés around New Farm where both parties are more engrossed in their mobile devices than each other? Personal contact has all the advantages of the observation of body language and feelings as we talk and it is difficult to replicate the depths of emotion in the spontaneous smile of a loved one by an image. We humans are pack animals and we need that personal contact with both friends and strangers at work or during recreation if we are to play our part in our community. This is particularly important for those at risk of social isolation through inability or lack of motivation to converse with others.

At New Farm Branch, we use technology to help attract those who might be interested in what we do, but our focus is social activity. Here are our plans for May: • Thursdays from 10am: Learn Mah-jong (Eastern style) at Café 63. • Wednesday May 18: Community bus visit to Cat Cuddle Café, Red Hill (supports Pussies Galore Cat Rescue). • Friday May 20 from 9am: “Stitch and Bitch” meeting in New Farm Library. As well as local retirement centres, the group supports the development of a much-needed neo-natal clinic in Uganda. • Friday May 20 from 6pm: Dinner at the Jakarta Indonesian Restaurant in Brunswick Street when we particularly welcome those interested in National Seniors who cannot attend day-time activities. • Wednesday May 25 from 10am: BBQ in the courtyard of the Uniting Church complex in Merthyr Road. • Wednesday June 1, 9:30am for 10am: A general meeting at the Uniting Church complex in Merthyr Road to meet Melissa McArgill from Hearing Australia. This will be followed by lunch at Miss Claude’s Crepes and French Café in Brunswick Street. For all enquiries, please call Val Murphy on 0403 713 040 or read the newsletter published on the website www.nsanewfarmbranch.com.

Three ‘Ps’ on show, and a toy at the door THE Chiropractic Association Australia (CAA) puts on its annual Spinal Health Week this month with the theme of “Back Your Inner Athlete”. From May 23-29 the CAA is encouraging people to make sure they have the “three Ps” of chiropractic care tended to: reducing pain, improving posture and active performance. The CAA said World Health Organisation (WHO) research suggested about 31 per cent of adults across the globe Dr Mark Abreu. were insufficiently active in 2008. And about 3.2 million deaths each year were down to insufficient physical activity, they said. Dr Mark Abreu, of the Queensland Chiropractic Group, said that he had noticed an increase in back and neck problems. “Many people are suffering needlessly with back issues, believing there’s nothing out there that can help,” he said. “I encouraging people to have their spines checked by a health-care professional during Spinal Health Week.” This month the Queensland Chiropractic Group will run a Toy Drive for the Children’s Hospital Foundation. For new patients only the cost of the initial consultation is to bring a new toy that the group can donate.

THE Smoke BBQ’s Texas beef short ribs are nothing short of genius, plain and simple. The ribs are rubbed with a delicious seasoning before being hickory smoked for 12 hours, then finished on the char grill and mopped with the Smoke’s own special Texas BBQ sauce – a recipe developed from a clever concoction of ingredients handed down through the generations to owners Stephen Johnson and Philip Mullen. The friends brought their delicious concept from the Deep South US to Australia and luckily for us, settled here in New Farm in 2006. They have just announced a huge new menu to go with their recent expansion into the space next door: Thick-cut pork ribs, brisket sandwiches, blackened salmon and charcoal chicken just to name a few of the hearty dishes from the menu. Oh – and the cornbread is the best! The Smoke BBQ is proudly American owned and operated and is the only smokehouse open on July 4. On Mondays kids eat free and on Wednesdays buy as many $1 Buffalo wings as you like when you dine in. A must try – dine in or take away. Stay tuned for more of the finer details but I can assure you the brand new five-course tasting menu is nothing short of sensational – and like nothing you’ve tasted before. e’cco bistro, 100 Boundary St, Brisbane p 3831 8344 www.eccobistro.com

The Triffid’s urban beer garden gets closer to the sky

THIS autumn sees a whole lot of changes at the Triffid including a new line-up of food offers, cocktails and entertainment. The Triffid’s renovated beer garden has been taken up a notch with a deck and roof area. The menu has been given a makeover with the newly dubbed “dude food with a street edge”, featuring the new falafel burger, bird on the run fried chicken wings served with maple syrup, blue cheese and BBQ sauce, a grilled chicken salad topped with a chickpea and herb salsa verde and nacho fries. Saturdays at the Triffid haven’t been forgotten with the launch of afternoon DJ NOW sessions and Sundays are sounding even better with the autumn re-launch of “Triffid Roots” presented by Triple J’s Sarah Howells. Lots to do and see! The Triffid, 7-9 Stratton St, Newstead p 3171 3001 www.thetriffid.com.au

The Brunswick … Take 2

THE Brunswick Hotel has long been known as a local favourite and reliable watering hole. But over the past 12 months, it’s taken a whole new shape and direction and locals are finally noticing the hotel’s surrounds and contemporary menus. The bistro renovations have imparted a completely new style and the deck beer garden gives the hotel a new vibe. As far as food goes, the new menu features dishes such as a hearty spicy seafood gumbo, brimming with deliciously fresh ocean fruits. The tapas platters are a great option for sharing with a stack of tasty choices to fill the board – the truffle risotto balls were a real hit! If you thought the Brunswick was the same old pub it always was, pop in for a look. Also, keep an eye out for their exclusive whisky and wine degustation dinners but be quick as seats are limited to 12. STREET-FOOD from Old Country kitchens will be the accent of the second annual Brisbane Italian Street Food and Wine Festival in New Farm Park on May 29. Festival organisers aim to promote Italian culture in Australia and around the world, highlighting the influence of Italian culture as a result of immigration and integration. “We really want to bring an Italian-style street festival to Brisbane that gives festival goers a chance to try some real Italian street food,” said Alessandro Sorbello, festival producer. “Our intention is to offer a chance to try things our grandmothers made.” Organisers are promising fine Italian street food and regional Italian wines accompanied by live music. Italian Week has been celebrated in Brisbane since 2007 and the food and wine festival in New Farm Park marks its 10th anniversary. It will sit on the riverfront and street vendors will serve wood-fired pizza, pasta and delicious gelato, with Italian wines coming from several regions around Italy. www.italianweek.com.au

THE LAWYER WHOSE TAPS LEAKED We’ve all heard of the Plumber with the leaky taps and the electrician with the dud light bulbs. Well I am the Lawyer who recently had occasion to experience that panicked feeling when the surgeon said “we have to do this now – you don’t have time”. 24 hours before I had been living a normal life, wife, two kids, a dog and a home in the suburbs 24 hours later I was in intensive care with a plethora of wires and tubes connected to me and I HURT !! Yes I do have a Will and an EPOA (Enduring Power of Attorney) In fact I also have a testamentary trust which ensures tax effective income for my wife and those 2 kids but I must confess that there were still things that I had not counted on. You see until then I had been bullet proof. I was the one who advised others to have their affairs in order. It was that last bit that had me worried. I knew I had it all but with the panic I couldn’t remember whether the documents were at work or at home. I also had the chance to talk to my wife before going under the Knife (chainsaw). Some people are not often so lucky. So remember, life is not something you make an appointment for. It is NOW. If I have a lesson for you, dear reader, it is please check your Wills and Powers of Attorney, check your business can run without you and where that Insurance Policy is kept. Have an emergency drawer where you keep important “stuff”. I have an Estate Directory which lists all the things you have and who to contact. If anyone wants a copy it’s free. Just email me, Myles Murphy on mgm@lawstore.com.au Of course If any of you don’t have Wills or can’t find them, or having found them don’t like the person you left things to any more, it goes without saying, call and let’s get it fixed. P. S. Thank you to all the locals that sent me best wishes and I am now fixed and back at the coal face!!

TALKING PROPERTY With all this talk about foreign investment I wanted to see if we ‘get’ any easier than we ‘give’. We live in a time when global real estate investments are reasonably common. There’s talk of many Australian’s buying overseas and I wonder if they’re complaining “these bloody Aussies are buying all of our land!”. I contacted a mate of mine Andrew Bell. Andrew has owned Ray White Surfers Paradise for over 25yrs so subsequently has dealt with many incoming international investors. More recently Andrew opened Ray White Atlanta in the USA. When I asked him about his experiences with foreign investment he said Australia had some of the strictest safeguarding restrictions in the world. He went on to say that in Atlanta there was no restrictions for international investors. He said there were some processes to follow, but effectively any Aussie could buy real estate there. I quizzed him about the prices. He said you could buy homes from below $100k. But a 4 bedroom home in a good area on over 1000m2 would be $250k. There is no stamp duty on the purchase which played a further role in keeping prices down. The cynic in me quizzed “what’s the catch?!”. Was there no capital growth? Were vacancy rates through the roof? Andrew explained rents for the $250k property would be roughly $1600per month and like most regions prices rise and fall cyclically. History shows that for 200 years Australia has had a significant number of international visitors and investors decide to stay or buy. So why all the fuss? I heard a wise man once say ‘Everyone questions international investors, until they’re selling their place and then it’s ‘no worries at all mate’.

Community meeting wants development reined in LOCAL residents voiced their concerns at a community meeting last week over a proposed residential development on Oxlade Drive. Councillor Vicki Howard, for Central Ward, said she did not support the current proposal for the site. “The developer has been told by Council officers to make significant changes for their designs to comply with City Plan requirements,” she said. “I’ve let our planning assessment team know about my concerns and residents’ concerns.” The site at 55 Oxlade Drive houses the head office of the Cerebral Palsy League but has been sold for residential development. Scott McPherson, a New Farm resident, said that the proposed development far exceeded the council plan. “My major concern is that we are dealing with an application that overdevelops the site, where the developer is proposing a building that exceeds the town plan in height, physical size, and gross floor area coverage,” Mr McPherson said. “We are happy for the site to be developed but it must be in accordance with the Council’s town plans and codes.” Much of the building is above the

PLACE LEAD AGENT

“Over the last 50 Years we have dealt with numerous Real Estate Agents in NSW & QLD. Aaron Woolard, in our opinion is the most open and honest agent we have ever dealt with. Every query we had was answered without hesitation and all our suggestions were listened to. Aaron’s attention to detail was commendable. Aaron did not hesitate to give us feedback (good and bad) on prospective buyers and ensured everyone was followed through. We would highly recommend Aaron to anyone looking to sell a property.” Greg & Noela - Teneriffe Sellers 2016
