NEWS

Planning deadline looms Brisbane City Council has invited residents of Newstead and Bowen Hills to have their say on a draft neighbourhood plan to guide future growth and community infrastructure. As reported last month the latest, and third, public consultation process on the Spring Hill plan is also under way with the same deadline. City Planning chair Cr Julian Simmonds said the plan had been prepared using feedback provided by local residents and property owners and would help guide future growth. The plan area focuses on Newstead North between Waterloo Street and Breakfast Creek, as well as Bowen Hills, outside the State Government’s development area. Cr Simmonds said Newstead North was a northern gateway to the inner city and a valuable inner-city industrial and creative hub, which would be promoted under the draft plan. “Existing creative industries such as art, design and low-impact

manufacturing will be encouraged, along with shops, cafés and offices, in mixed-use developments alongside apartments,” Cr Simmonds said. “Three new properties will be afforded heritage protection, including the Avoca Flats at 18 Breakfast Creek Road, Bowen Hills, built in 1935. “An administration building at 60 Edmonstone Street will also be protected, which was to support a soap and candle manufacturing business that was on the site in 1883. “Additionally, Council will look to preserve the prominence of character housing on Montpelier Hill, with 20m building height restrictions along Breakfast Creek Road. “The northern part of Breakfast Creek Road between Edmund Street and Breakfast Creek will become the main area for future growth, as well as a small redevelopment area in Maud and Austin Streets, both of which will be limited to a maximum building height of eight storeys.” Central Ward’s Cr Vicki Howard said the draft Newstead North Neighbourhood Plan was available to view on Council’s website www. brisbane.qld.gov.au/newsteadnorth until June 2.

Flagship store opens Dello Mano opened its much anticipated flagship store in Merthyr Village in time for Easter. It was perfect timing for the local business renowned for its handcrafted luxury chocolate brownie. The opening marks the return of Dello Mano to New Farm, where it all began 11 years ago. Back then, the fledgling business founded by Deborah Peralta launched gift-boxed brownies at the Jan Powers Farmers’ Market. “Opening at Merthyr Village felt like

coming home,” Ms Peralta said. “We engendered a lot of local support in our early days with our family’s stall at Jan Powers Farmers’ Markets and many of those clients are still with us today.” The Merthyr Village store, open 7 days, offers its signature range of handcrafted brownies and cakes, an all-day light savoury and salad menu, memorable High Tea, gelato and great coffee to dine in and take away. www.dellomano.com.au

Mother of all Booms slated for local hub village comment MIKE O’CONNOR If the Newstead building boom has peaked then no one has bothered to tell property developer Mirvac. The listed company has just submitted a development application to the Brisbane City Council to build a further 333 units in Skyring Terrace. The proposed development would be called Shore and be built on the site between the existing Skyring Gasworks apartments and the northern tower of the Unison at Waterfront complex. If approved it would comprise two towers: one of 21 storeys containing 152 apartments and another of 25 levels with 181 apartments. In total the buildings would contain 416 carpark spaces and 1000sq.m of retail space linking Skyring Terrace with Festival Place. Festival Place already carries traffic from 240 apartments in Unison and

263 in Skyring Apartments with a further 190 due to come on line from the soon-to-be completed Lucent tower being built by Cavcorp. The addition of the new Mirvac development means this narrow side street will be carrying traffic generated by more than 1100 apartments. Speed bumps, anyone? In the meantime, it is to be hoped that Mirvac will landscape the intended site of the Shore development which is presently an eyesore. The company has also flagged its intention to proceed with the development of its Evelyn Street site and its other Skyring Terrace site next to the Energex transmission tower. The latter project is contingent upon the removal of the tower and its twin at Bulimba and the laying of cables under the river at an estimated cost of $20 million so this, for the moment, resides in the “too hard’’ file. What is certain is that the Newstead development cycle has a long way to run before the last crane leaves.

Pizzantica have set up shop in New Farm at the Casa Italia community centre to complement their already packed schedule of catering functions, events as well as delivering quality pizzas at various markets. Co-owner Luca Ferone said that despite his busy hours, he still loved his craft. “The fun is that it’s not like having a restaurant that you’re always in: every time, it’s changing,” Mr Ferone said. “Also, I like making pizzas, so it’s good bringing the food to the street at an affordable price and they don’t have to go to a restaurant. Instead we come to them, which is convenient,” he said. “We started (in Casa Italia) in November, just for a Sunday session and after that we did Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights,” Mr Ferone said. “We no longer just do pizza but also pasta, some entrees, antipasto, salads – we’ve expanded the menu,” he added, pointing to the assortment of dishes displayed on the wall behind him. Before moving to Casa Italia in Grey Street , Pizzantica made a name for itself through its fire-red oven mounted on the back of a Kombi van.

Discovered: silk sari tapestry A collector in New Farm has acquired an incredibly grand silk sari patchwork tapestry, an impressive, antique piece of art. The 2.2m by 2.7m patchwork has been made from traditional Rajasthani wedding saris, some decades old. The collector of the artwork (who requested anonymity) said that she was able to organise a viewing upon negotiation. “It’s a very unique piece – we’re hoping to get feedback from people in the community about the artwork,” she said.

“I feel very privileged to have this piece in my possession. The fact it was sown together by disadvantaged Rajasthani women is very meaningful.” The artwork took a year to stretch, all sown together with silk thread and with the saris themselves encrusted with precious stones. The art comes inside a large, exquisite frame and would be suitable to be hung inside a house with high ceilings or a building with a large foyer. Contact the collector for more details at 0421 740 636.

Local cooks dominate TV shoot-out BY ANNEMARIE WHITE New Farm Spice Queens Valerie and Courtney Ferdinands and Kangaroo Point brother-and-sister team Amy and Tyson Murr are the undispute best home-cooks in Australia after making the grand-final of the popular reality TV show My Kitchen Rules. Although the mother-daughter duo was identified early as the contestants to beat, Valerie says humbly that it was Poppy’s notebook, her father’s handwritten book of traditional Indian recipes that became their inspiration for their success. “It focused us each week throughout the competition. During every challenge we faced, that book inspired us to cook honest and homecooked meals like Poppy’s Indian Anglo lamb pie, his masala beef with lentil and goat curries.” Chatting to the pair it is obvious they are close but it was the opportunity to really discover her

Courtney with a picture of inspirational Poppy.

family history through cooking that has made appearing in the show a life-changing experience for Courtney. “Doing the show with Mum was great but learning about my Poppy, a poor Indian migrant, and our food and cultural traditions evoked so many memories. I am normally not emotional but this has really made me think.” It was equally as poignant for Valerie. “I loved seeing the legacy of my father’s recipe book brought to life throughout the show. It made me delve deeper into my family heritage. “I am humbled by the joy it has brought not only Courtney and me but to hear celebrity judges telling us our Poppy-inspired curries were the best they have tasted, has given me such pride.” It is also Poppy’s inspiration that allowed the pair to create their Sweet Spiced Sauce and take out the prestigious Sauce Challenge a few weeks ago.

This earned them the opportunity to have their sauce bottled and sold commercially in supermarkets. They recognised team work was the key right from the start in the selection auditions when the pair produced a winning lamb garam masala backstrap with Indian flatbread and mint chutney in 15 minutes. “And we were reassured our food was tasty when the crew snapped up our leftovers!” laughs Valerie. MKR began in February with 18 teams. “We saw several standout teams from the start and I’m not surprised that fellow locals Amy and Tyson are standing with us at the end. “They are very good cooks and I was scared to go up against them from the start,” admits Valerie. She then reflects: “The most wonderful thing to come out of this experience is realising that what I thought were our ordinary recipes that we have served to our friends and family for so many years, are actually very flavoursome. “Show judges Pete Evans, Manu Feidel and Colin Fassinidge telling us on many occasions that our food was amazing has really astonished me,” says Valerie. While the TV show is essentially entertaining, interaction between a diverse group of personalities vying for a cooking prize, the popular

Young chamber powers on It’s been a year of growth for the Brisbane Junior Chamber of Commerce (BJCC). President Nathan Schokker said the group had gone from strength to strength this year, drawing big crowds at networking events and maintaining a core membership of around 120. Mr Schokker said the group had a long history of supporting young professionals in the area. “We look to facilitate that through monthly events that are engaging, give our members and our guests skills that they can practice in business,” he said. Mr Schokker said that joining the BJCC had tremendous benefits for succeeding in business. “Personally I’ve seen lots of people who are already high achievers join the chamber and enhance the skills that they have,” Mr Schokker said. “On the flip side, I’ve seen many people join the chamber who are quite reserved and almost introverted but the BJCC has really helped draw their skills out. “Through the chamber people get a lot better at socialising and

Ferdinands consciously avoided any controversy or strategic connections. “Although we enjoyed lovely friendships with many of the contestants, we didn’t want to be involved in the animosity that goes with being politically involved. “We never lost sight of improving our cooking skills and making the most of any culinary opportunities for our future,” says Courtney. “Sometimes in life you have to put yourself out there and take a chance doing something really different and even a bit scary. “Although it was wonderful doing the show with my daughter, the competition for me was all about the food,” says Valerie. Daughter Courtney also embraced the opportunity and would love to explore travel and TV. Maybe Poppy’s Inspirational Cookbook is just the beginning! NOTE: At the time of Village News publication, the My Kitchen Rules grand final had not been aired. Two endings had been filmed so the Spice Queens did not know who won. Valerie and Courtney, surrounded by family and friends watched the result with the rest of Australia saying, “Winning would be a dream beyond belief. But if Amy and Tyson win, we know we have been pipped by two exceptionally creative cooks.”

networking along with building relationships that help their career development.” Vice-president Lana Thomas said the chamber hosted a range of different events monthly, such as breakfasts with speakers and kickstarter events for networking. “They’re great for people to meet others, along with introducing people to the BJCC,” Ms Thomas said. “One of our sponsors is the Commonwealth Bank and we typically hold our Business Insight Series (BIS) events there at Queen Street,” she said. “The BIS events are where we will get in speakers, educators or a panel and make an educational event for attendees, with opportunities for networking afterwards,” she said.

Tea-bag swipe takes the cake village view BETH J LEACH

Photo: Chelsea Sipthorp

We’ve spent the past few days on holiday at Casuarina, New South Wales, and I’ve come away asking that age-old question: “Why is hotel shampoo and conditioner like nailpolish remover on your hair?” Other questions arose too, such as: “When did I first realise that I had a really, terrible, sense of direction?” Seriously, all you’d need to do is spin me around a couple of times in a hotel carpark and I’d be searching for a breadcrumb trail to the car. Hopeless. Hotels bring out strange behaviour in me. I almost always leave having taken the spare tea bags from the caddy with me back home. I don’t even drink tea … really. But it’s free, right? And I could have drunk it but chose not to so it’s going in the suitcase. We found ourselves being very “LA” today: poolside, eating burgers and fries Our youngest children, Kit and Harvey, 12 and 10 respectively, have an

unusual barometer on the success of a place, or their lasting memory based on their favourite currency – food. For them, the vacation is a hit because the IGA at the Salt resort sells an especially hard-to-find array of Hubba Bubba Bubblegum flavours. I asked them on the sun-loungers what they remember from when I had my retail clothing business and they said, gyozas. The neighbour was a Japanese food outlet. I rest my case. I was very grateful that they heated the smaller of the two big pools. This made swimming in April much more enjoyable and in my case, possible at all. The sign next to the only spa in the complex had me a bit perturbed though. It read: “Please consider others and use the spa for 5 minutes per person.” So that’s three or four people for 5 minutes each, 12 times an hour, across about 10 swimming hours a day. How many of those 480 bodies found the temperature change going from pool to spa too much to handle and wee’d in the spa? I know at least one did. So, I’ve topped up my tan, possibly eaten and drunk too much, didn’t turn off the screen enough and it’s back to work. Now, if only I could find my way to the car.

Hundreds turn out at dawn for Teneriffe ANZAC service A large crowd estimated at 800 paid their respects to fallen soldiers on ANZAC Day at the sombre dawn service held on Teneriffe’s Submariner’s Walk Heritage Trail. For the first time this year, the ceremony featured a large LED sign which was installed on the trail, along with silhouettes of six classes of submarines. Attendees of the service were also treated to the first rays of golden morning light hitting the Brisbane River.

Don Currell, Master of Ceremonies for the service, said that he was amazed as to the number of residents whom turned up. “The genuine support, not only from Teneriffe, but also the surrounding suburbs confirms that this service is etched in the calendar for many years to come,” Mr Currell said. Ben Pritchard, president of the Teneriffe Progress Association, said that it was a solemn, appropriate and well attended and organised service. May 2017 I villageNews

Lauren Malone and her daughter Evie live in Wooloowin and frequent the area, with Lauren working out of a coworking space in Newstead.

Taryn Ponte lives in Teneriffe with her 3 boys and said that her life is a lot easier now that they’re older.

Ms Malone said that she finds the peninsula very accessible. “I push the pram around the area a lot, often with two border collies, and don’t have too much trouble!” Ms Malone said. “The boardwalk is a great area to go to clear your head.

“This area is absolutely child friendly,” Ms Ponte said. “It’s got great access to safe and secure play spaces, like New Farm and Teneriffe Parks.” Her boys, Leo, Jack and Oliver attend local New Farm State School and she finds that it has plenty of outdoor space and great amenities.

Anisela McGuigan with her daughter Myah live in Teneriffe.

“We love it because everything’s on foot – we love the walking- It’s very pram friendly!” Ms McGuigan said “This is one of our favourite spots, along with the river walk – it’s one of our favourite things to do! “I’m lucky – Myah can go to childcare connected to my work at the RBWH, so it works well.”

Local dancers kiss-and-tell Expression Dance Company’s latest performance Behind Closed Doors, described as a “poetic kiss-and-tell”. Brought to the stage by Expression’s artistic director, Natalie Weir, the performance will feature local dancers Michelle Barnett and Richard Causer along with jazz trio Trichotomy. Causer and Barnett were eager to share some behind-the-scenes secrets with University of Queensland journalism student Julian Lehnert, exclusively for the Village News. “We start dabbling with characters and ideas and creating movement and then we start creating scenes that are pretty much set, however, they always continue to evolve with each rehearsal,” Richard Causer said. “What’s great about working with Natalie is that she allows that freedom for us all to challenge ourselves frequently and evolve our characters, to play with movement and experiment with different things,” he added. “Nat is a very giving, loving person and it comes through in the way that she works with us,” said Michelle Barnett. “I’ve been really lucky to have had Nat for a few years now.” Richard said: “While I did go away and worked with other people, there’s

nothing like working with Natalie – it’s an experience you want to come back for. “There’s been quite a bit of sharing of ideas because Michelle, Jake McLarnon and myself all represent the same person but just different parts of their being.” Both stars said the “randomness” of Behind Closed Doors would please the audience most. “It’s forever evolving,” said Richard. “Yes, lots to see,” said Michelle. “And, obviously, the collaboration with Trichotomy.” QPAC Playhouse May 19-27. Is Ian ‘that’ Ian? Yes and no PAUL FAIRWEATHER Having a beautifully kept hedge pleases me immensely but the reality of having to care for it pleases me less. My mock orange hedge to the street, now seven years tall, requires ladders and planks to keep it tidy and as a result is constantly unkempt. I often think a better hedge species might have been orange pekoe with which I could have started the New Farm Tea Plantation. The act of harvesting by the plantation worker would have keep it constantly coiffed, with the benefit of free tea for life. While recently trimming this oft unruly hedge, I had a strong recollection of my father who passed away suddenly a year ago.

12

villageNews I May 2017

From 74 Cicada Street Killarney, Ian Fairweather 2006

He visits my thoughts daily, different activities being the catalysts for varying scenes from a lifelong reel of memories. Sitting on top of the ladder, my thoughts wandered from how hard and methodically he worked his gardens, the distinct scent of him, to other acts of trimming. Until his late Fifties Dad was clean-shaven. He found facial hair very irritating, especially on the faces of his sons, so it came as a shock when at the age of 60 on an extended holiday, he grew a beard. His scraggy white growth became part of who he was and he never shaved it off and indeed, rarely trimmed it. My father, Ian, was an engineer,

and on retirement he took up painting, not to be confused with the other Ian Fairweather, the famous abstract painter from Bribie Island. At the time I regularly showed my own paintings at Jan Murphy Gallery. One of the fondest and most enduring memories is a joint show of landscape paintings we held at Jan’s Gallery in 2007. It was a sellout and one of his proudest moments, and I am forever grateful that I could share it with him. Over the years I have been constantly asked whether I am related to Ian Fairweather. Over this time, as an architect I encountered many people who knew Dad as our professions overlapped, though half the time the question was

whether I was related to the famous abstract painter from Bribie. It got particularly confusing when Dad began painting, even more so when he started to look like the other Ian Fairweather with his big bushy white beard. At an Ian Fairweather exhibition cocktail party at the Queensland Art Gallery many years ago, I was repeatedly asked whether I was related. I explained, yes, my father is Ian, but he was an engineer, but now a painter, but no, not this Ian Fairweather. After an hour of extrapolated and unnecessary explanations, I just told the truth. Yes, Ian Fairweather is my father. I felt vindicated when sometime later an article promoting the exhibition in a local newspaper mistakenly included a photo of Dad. For now, the hedge is neat and tidy and by no means a work of art. But it won’t be long before it abstracts itself again and evokes fond memories of Dad and his scraggly beard. PS. It was pointed out to me by an older and wiser reader, that last month I incorrectly referred to the Brush Turkey as the Bush Turkey. I must confess I had not known this and apologise for the oversight but now I wonder whether my connection between bush and brush lead me to this story.

NEWS BY ANNEMARIE WHITE

Happy and says he has dedicated his life to making others smile and laugh. “I know other people see me as a bit crazy because I am always silly – and I agree with them. I am. “But I don’t worry what other people think because I know I am making people happy.” The 60-plus ball of happiness, originally from Canada, came to Australia when he was 19 and worked as a DJ in Sydney. His contagious and effervescent personality caught the attention of radio station 2SM which had relaunched as a Top 40 station featuring Australia’s first team of disc jockeys, known as “The Good Guys”. “I was the bad guy of the group and was known as Mad Mel but I had a zany sense of humour and was a little outrageous which made doing the program such fun. “I also promoted a number of events including the Mad Mel Big Stir, a concert under the Sydney Harbour Bridge that attracted over 100,000 screaming fans.” When The Beatles toured Australia Hap, aka Mad Mel, asked his listeners to contribute to a Beatles gift of a woollen scarf.

Rain or shine, every Saturday morning several hundred people gather in New Farm Park, lace up their runners, stretch and flex and take off for a 5km timed run along the river to Teneriffe Ferry and back again. The free “parkrun” attracts an eclectic community with the very speedy completing the course in around 15 minutes while others like me take a lot longer. But who is the mystery man who high-fives you when you think you can’t go any further? Who is the guy bringing up the tailend of runners crossing the line? Who is the guy yelling “good on ya” when you are struggling to keep going? And who is sometimes the laughing volunteer in the orange vest? It’s always local character Mel “Hap” Happy, who has become an iconic figure at the New Farm park runs, running the free timed 5km run or donning his orange vest and volunteering as a photographer. Hap tells me that from a very young age his goal was to live a happy life so he officially changed his surname to

myself but even more important for me, it’s making sure everyone else has a good time. “It’s the wonderful local people who make the New Farm park run very special. “Just seeing so many people of all ages, the young kids, the families and the oldies, running, pushing prams or walking and having fun makes me smile.” Hap is confident that he will run 500 park runs and volunteer 500 times before he is 100 years old. And no doubt there will be plenty of inspired park runners high-fiving him, shouting “good on ya” and encouraging the centurion over the finish line with a smile.

Thousands contributed and the resulting scarf was more than 5km long. Mel hid at the Sheraton Hotel and surprised Paul McCartney with the gift in the corridor and the singer promptly invited him into their rooms. “And that started a lovely ongoing friendship with the Beatles,” adds Hap. Hap, a restless person in search of contentment, moved to Brisbane “because the weather is much more cheerful with sunshine most of the year and I saw it as an exciting place to live”. In recent years Hap has found his soul and passion in park runs. He runs or volunteers every week, having already run the course 170 times, and trains five days a week. “It’s not about my times now. I once ran the course in 40 minutes and 1 second, but these days I am slower. “Park running is about enjoying

Unfortunately, there are few, if any, legal precedents as the costs of litigation are prohibitive with the outcome uncertain and the plight of these unfortunate victims continues to be swept under the carpet despite work by National Seniors and others. In most cases their only hope is when the children reach 18 at which time they may be able to regain contact through Facebook or another social media platform. After our general meeting on May 3, New Farm Branch plans for the month include: • 9am Monday May 1 and Friday May 19 – Stitch & Bitch at New Farm Library • 10am Thursdays – learn Mah-jong (Eastern style) at Café 63. • 6pm Friday May 19 – dinner at Jakarta Indonesian Restaurant in Brunswick Street. • 9.30am Wednesday June 7 – general meeting at the Merthyr Uniting Church and entertainment by singer Elizabeth Rose.

The producers of Insight screening on SBS on Tuesday nights have just recorded a program about Grandparenting in Australia which will go to air soon. As well as exploring issues concerning grandparents who routinely help care for their grandchildren, coverage will include those who care full-time, those who don’t because of distance/travel or choice and those who cannot because they’ve been denied a relationship with their grandchildren. Of these, by far the smallest group numerically, but in many ways the most emotionally affected, the most overlooked and the most deserving of our sympathy and support are those denied any relationship. In most cases fault lies with the parents, who probably do not appreciate the emotional and mental damage they could be causing their children, and their parents, and that they could be in

Beryl Watson and some very generous New Farm knitters have been “stitching and bitching” their way into support services across Brisbane in the form of rugs, teddies and many more comforting, woollen items. “Stitch and Bitch” (S&B) started when some members of the National Seniors Association, including Ms Watson, were visited by the Australian Cardiovascular Alliance. “They told us we could help in any way possible, so we started making rugs with little love hearts, along with teddy bears,” Ms Watson said. “We sent them over with the staff, doctors and nurses and the folks over at the hospital were getting really excited,” she said. “We then began giving them to Treetops nursing home, we’ve been over to Ozcare and many other services since.” The group has created some remarkable woolly inventions such

as warm sleeves for people who require drips, and turbans and beanies for patients as the winter months rapidly approach. “We don’t do anything unless we can take it directly to the service that benefits,” Ms Watson said. “We’re knitting engineers!” she said. S&B has a core group of around 25 people who come along and bring what Ms Watson calls their “homework” and continue knitting. “I’ve threatened that I’m going to put straws in their cups so they don’t even have to stop and pick up their cups!” Ms Watson said, laughing. “Such dedicated people come along to help us out, giving their time and talents – they’re a great group,” she said. “People are so kind and give us so much wool!”

S&B meets two days each month – the first Monday and the third Friday of each month – at the New Farm Library meeting room.

YOUR TOP THREE DESTINATIONS?

• The Sunshine Coast for its amazing beaches and cool coastal towns. • Scotland for the amazing scenery – lochs, rolling green hills, castles and the ever-friendly Scots. • Spain for the lifestyle, siestas and late nights! A place which celebrates its love of food and wine and just celebrating life.

Q

YOUR FAVOURITE TRAVEL TALE?

When staying with friends in Beijing, Mum and I decided to walk along part of the Great Wall of China, about 1.5 hours’ drive out of town. The traffic in Beijing was wild, to say the least. I travelled there, perhaps unwisely, in the sidecar of my friend’s motorcycle. By the time we arrived, we’d avoided numerous collisions, my knuckles were white and my Mum, who was following behind in a car, was several shades greyer.

AN ‘OFF-THE-BEATEN’ TRACK STORY?

I visited a village called Vitance in Serbia, for Christmas, appox 108km south-east of Belgrade. It has about 200 houses and is definitely not on the tourist trail. We were objects of great curiosity and when it snowed on our first night, a crowd of locals gathered to see whether the visiting Australians could manage to walk on snow. We were made to feel so very welcome being invited from house to house for pork spit roasts and homemade Rakija (plum brandy that’ll knock your socks off). This trip convinced me of the value of venturing away from tourist hot spots to experience the path less travelled and the real culture of a country.

Q

WHAT ARE THREE ‘MUST-TAKE’ ITEMS?

I suggest a good camera plus music via iPod/phone with Bluetooth speaker and the ‘Cards Against Humanity’ card game – a great way to break the ice and have a laugh with new or old friends..

BY EMILY WARBRICK Our Aspen Colorado ski experience opened our eyes to the best ski resort we have ever been to and introduced us to the Aspen Charm. Aspen encompassed the complete experience from the moment we landed at the airport and made the short transfer to our lodging. We experienced the ski-in, ski-out accommodation at Snowmass, the amazing historical town of Aspen, blue-bird skies, powder snow and outstanding service wherever we went. The four mountains of Aspen cater for all skiing and snowboarding abilities and the short lift lines were an absolute bonus. The stats are two people per 2 acres on average! The level of service exceeded our expectations and it is this service that made every moment enjoyable no matter what we were doing: the condo amenities with amazing hot tubs, pools and fireplaces, local people offering to ski with us, and outstanding restaurant service … not to mention the ski concierge to make

transferring equipment between the Aspen four mountains seamless. We didn’t carry our skis more than 100m: extremely handy when travelling with children. Snowscene can tailor a package to suit your requirements from moderate to deluxe accommodation with Kids 12 and under skiing free and 30% off 10+ night stays. Attend the Snowscene Aspen VIP evening. Nicole Weston owns Nicole Weston Architect, a firm that was established in 2003 in New Farm that strives to get results and achieve the best possible architectural outcome. Her business is focused on delivering a building or space for every client that encompasses successful functional design and achieves an enduring architectural solution. Nicole has over 25 years of industry experience, graduating with honours from the University of Queensland in 1995, and hopes to pass on her experience to younger employees by taking on the role of a mentor. “Architecture is a very rewarding profession and although I have dedicated a great deal of my time and energy to my work, I am very proud of my team, my projects and the opportunities that we have created for ourselves,” Ms Weston said. “If I can maintain this I will have achieved what I set out to do.” Nicole has been involved in the local New Farm Soccer Club for many years, with her two sons playing football there and the business being a sponsor of the club. With the running of her own business enabling her to have the flexibility to be around for her own children, Nicole believes it’s also important to give her own employees as much support and flexibility that she can.

Rebel Campbell-Carlson is the outstanding manager in charge of Westpac’s Fortitude Valley branch, Australia’s oldest company and first bank in Australia. In her role, Rebel said she has the privilege of managing the branch to help their customers, the community and people prosper and grow. “I started with Westpac just over a quarter of a century ago out in Lighting Ridge,” Rebel said. “Since those early days the bank has allowed me to travel the country and work in many amazing places, like Darwin and Byron Bay,” she said. “Six years ago I was able to take the reins of the local branch here in Fortitude Valley and I’m happily settled just over the hill in New Farm.” Rebel’s passion for helping community members is illustrated in her work, attending a local notfor-profit and presenting ways to become more financially aware, along with tactics on how to achieve financial goals. Rebel speaks high praises of her husband and said that the reverse is true in their case of the old saying, ‘behind every great man is a greater woman’. “Without him I would never have been able to achieve what I have with both my work and my family,” she said. Shaped by Westpac’s vision to be one of the world’s greatest service companies, Rebel said she is striving to be a great mother and manager to both her families, at home and at the office.

Natasha Bennett runs The Vino Bus Winery Tours, an exciting service that offers front door pick up from Brisbane and the Gold Coast to the Tamborine Mountain wine region. Deciding to put a modern spin on wine tourism, Natasha has created the ideal wine tour she was always searching for – one that is informative and enjoyable experience for all ages and levels of wine knowledge. In doing so, Natasha says she and her team get to share her wine passion, eating lunch, interacting with her passengers and creating a hassle-free wonderful experience. Natasha said that she had no idea at all what she was doing when she started the business, but has confidently and successfully figured it out one step at a time. “I have made plenty of mistakes along the way, but I think that’s the best way to learn. I believe in ‘will’ over ‘wisdom’ any day,” Ms Bennett said. “We have some really amazing wine in Queensland right at our doorstep and I am determined and passionate to get the word out!” Natasha’s a testament to believing in yourself and your ideas, can often be found with her nose in a motivational business book and drives her personal success by witnessing and being spurred on by the results of her own efforts.

Bek Drayton established BeKonstructive Marketing three years ago, a boutique firm that provides many online marketing services. Having scored a break into the industry with a copywriting internship in her last semester of uni, Bek has worked in the in the marketing industry since 2010. Her firm specialises in digital marketing, builds websites, manages social media, creates email marketing campaigns, writes content and much more. “I want to see how far I can take this!” Ms Drayton said. “Owning my own business was never a dream of mine, partly because it just wasn’t something that I realised was an option but now that I am here, every time I sign a new client or branch out into a new service, or hire a new employee, I have to give myself a little pinch because it just wasn’t’ anything that I’d ever imagined myself doing,” she said. “I’m excited to see how big I can grow my business and how far I can take it.” As with most new business owners, Bek does admit that she’s still working on the work/ life balance thing. “I build strong professional relationships with all of my clients so there is a feeling of not wanting to let them down - it is hard to shut that off at the end of the day or on weekends, but I am getting better at it!”

Tarah Jameson is the director of HBJ Architects, a company that is enthusiastic about and devoted to designing user-centric, enjoyable spaces, particularly for educational and aged care facilities. Her passion for the ideas behind these kinds of designs came from her work in Community Architecture in London, where she recognised that these spaces can contribute to positive social change and promote community well-being. “I enjoy problem solving and asking questions, that is what architecture is about - that and designing user-centric architecture creating enjoyable spaces for the end user, in my case, education and aged care facilities,” Ms Jameson said. “I’m also a strong sustainable design advocate and believe that we have a responsibility to consider the impact that development has on society, the environment, and the community,” she said. As Director of HBJ Architects, she’s enthusiastic about involving clients in the design process, along with working closely with other professional consultants to form an experienced and capable project team. The firm has a track record of maintaining and encouraging cooperative consultant teams and client agreements that ensure a smooth design, construction and management process. Tarah, a University of Queensland graduate, wants to continue giving back to the community in the long term by way of designing sustainable and enjoyable spaces.

Calvados + Woolf Lawyers focuses on corporate and commercial law, wills and estates, asset protection, property services, pharmacy law and litigation. “Our clients range from local individuals and businesses to mid-sized enterprises and high net worth clients and entrepreneurs”, Marie says. “We have established ourselves as a cost-effective alternative to larger firms in terms of quality of clients, complexity and quality of advice, and, depth of expertise.” Marie is a member of STEP, the international Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and our firm has a thriving Wills and Estate practice, catering to both individuals wanting either simple Wills and Powers of Attorney, or, more complex testamentary, asset protection and successions structures and strategies. Marie wants to continue building a boutique practice that is highly respected by local individuals, businesses and peers and she is determined to maintain her local connection by continuing her support for local organisations and events and supporting local businesses. “In our firm, at both locations, we strongly believe in the ‘buy local and support local’ mantra and we always make it a priority to be part of the local community, in terms of clients, suppliers, community involvement and sponsorship”.

Family restores iconic café

village food ANNABELLE CHAPPLE

When Robyn Bews popped into a New Farm café with three-month-old daughter Chanel White on her hip in the 1990s, she never expected they would own and operate that same eatery together 24 years later. On a cool autumn day, though, here they sit, mother and daughter united not just by their blood but by their business The Moray, a café on the corner of Merthyr Road and Moray Street which Robyn tells me started out as a deli almost 40 years ago. After redesigning and rebranding the eatery, with the help of husband and dad Jeremy Bews, the duo opened the new-look dining room in September last year. Following months of all-day breakfasts The Moray is entering

a new phase this month, adding evenings to its roster. While Robyn and Chanel were tight-lipped on the new menu, they divulged the star local chef behind it. and the secret to their success.

Robyn: Well we’ve sort of done it before, haven’t we? Chanel: Mum owned a café before for 10 years (The Nest, Fortitude Valley). I started working with her there when I was 13, as the dish pig. Robyn: We were quietly thinking, would we do something else again? When this position became available it just seemed like it was meant to be. Chanel: Mum worked for the original owners of The Moray so it was quite sentimental.

Q

WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO HOSPITALITY?

Robyn: My first job was in a pharmacy, actually it was Mr Conway’s pharmacy down here on Merthyr Road. When I moved to the Gold Coast I got a second job at a hotel and it seemed like a lot of fun: music was playing and people were enjoying themselves, it wasn’t like going to work.

Q

WHAT’S IT LIKE WORKING TOGETHER?

Chanel: Like any family you have

Q

CHANEL, HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO PURSUE ANOTHER CAREER?

Chanel: No, I liked hospitality from the outset. I enjoy meeting new people, serving them and making people happy every day. I liked the idea someone could be having a down day and be turned around when they see my smiling face. Between mum’s café, I also worked at Mario at the Dining Room in Hendra, next door at Vine Restaurant and managed Riverbend Café in Bulimba. I was just starting to think about doing my own business when my mum and Jeremy were looking at doing one themselves, so we decided to do it together.

Q

WAS IT CHALLENGING REBRANDING A LONGSTANDING LOCAL BUSINESS?

Robyn: It’s been positive and negative. There have been a few different operators here so real locals who hadn’t been to the café in a while didn’t realise we had taken over.

The café’s regulars have been very complimentary on what we’ve done, though. Chanel: The community’s been supportive. They come in and know it’s a friendly environment, a home away from home, plus everyone is so excited we’re opening Thursday to Sunday nights.

Q

CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE NEW DINNER MENU?

Chanel: We’re not sticking to any particular style of food, we’re trying to mix it up. Robyn: We have a new chef, Christian Fardel, who’s worked at The Continental Café for more than 10 years. He took over from Philip Johnson there some years ago. Christian has a couple of signature dishes he wants to serve that he said locals will be coming back for. They’re top secret for now.

Q

WHAT’S YOUR SECRET FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAFÉ?

Robyn: I think we say the care factor, that’s what it is. Chanel: Absolutely, and I feel like no matter what your job is, you have to apply a consistent work ethic. If you’re happy, you’ll make someone else happy.

your ups and downs but we’ve done it before so I think mum and I have learned from those mistakes. Robyn: I think we’re pretty good, plus we’ve built a great team. Our goal is for it to never feel like we’re coming to work, to have the café-feel like it’s a second home.

FOOD

Changing of the guard

Bitter Suite Head Chef Josh Tollet

Chanel White with mum Robyn Bews

One-bowl berry + banana loaf ANNABELLE’S NOTES - SERVES 8 This loaf is baked fresh at The Moray most days and is one of Chanel’s favourites for its moistness. I found it so simple to make because there was no butter to beat, no tricky tools needed, just one bowl and a few measuring cups to wash up. I also added a dash of vanilla essence but I do that with everything sweet I bake after once hearing a great New York pastry chef talk about how she usually trebles the vanilla in most recipes because people love it, it reminds us of childhood flavours. With sweet loaves it’s important not to over mix when combining the flour with the wet ingredients or the cake will become dense.

1 cup 1 cup 2 1 cup 2 cups 1 1 cup

Greek yoghurt vegetable oil eggs, at room temperature caster sugar self raising flour banana, mashed* frozen berries

Preheat fan-forced oven to 160°C. Grease and line a loaf tin (22cm x 8cm x 7cm) with baking paper. Place the yoghurt, oil, eggs and sugar in a bowl and whisk to combine. Sift flour and add to mixture, stirring until just combined. Fold through the banana and berries. Spoon mixture into the lined loaf tin and bake for around 1 hour 15 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Dust with icing sugar before serving. The café toasts a slice of the loaf and serves it with mascarpone.

It’s all things new at Bitter Suite, a modern Australian restaurant and bar on Welsby Street, New Farm, with a new menu and a new head chef. Manager Rob Henry said head chef Josh Tollet had made a fantastic influence on the restaurant. “He’s an English chef who’s worked in various fine-dining venues through the UK,” Mr Henry said. “He’s been with us for a few years and worked his way up. “We’re keeping the restaurant on the same trajectory but broadening the appeal.

“It’s good honest cooking that people can relate to,” he said. The restaurant has plenty of Australian-made spirits and wines, with their specialty being Australian craft beers, stocking only independent brewers. The beautiful old red-brick building also has two core function areas, the wine cellar and the bar area, for which they don’t charge room hire. Bitter Suite boasts talented bar and restaurant staff with free parking. “The atmosphere is warm, friendly, inviting and relaxing,” Mr Henry said.

We are unashamedly pro-infrastructure and will continue to be the voice to build smoother streets and tackle traffic congestion for you and your neighbours. Residents will benefit from large infrastructure investment in the coming years. The major upgrade to the Inner City Bypass, including a new onramp at Bowen Bridge Road, which will provide everyone with new direct access to the ICB and relieve congestion, is being built as we speak.

Your new on-ramp to the ICB and Legacy Way will save you time, getting you to where you want to be more quickly.

Emily Chapman + Bec Perry

In the coming weeks we are also upgrading the lights at Ivory and Boundary Streets in the City so residents and visitors to the new Howard Smith Wharves precinct can have easier access to the Ivory Street tunnel, and in June we’ll be resurfacing Boundary Street Spring Hill between Water and Turbot Streets so you can have a smoother ride.

NEW LIFE-SAVING TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNOLOGY Innovative technology that clears the way for emergency vehicles to get to their destination more quickly is being rolled out across Brisbane with a joint BCC and State Government project.

The technology ensures vehicles approaching busy intersections could be met with green lights, saving valuable time and potentially lives. Every second counts in an emergency and this technology will ensure our city’s ambulances and fire and rescue vehicles can move through traffic signals as efficiently and safely as possible. The rollout has so far connected more than 300 intersections across 13 Brisbane road corridors connected to the system in the past year, with the potential to expand the rollout to more than 600 sites in the future.

villageNews I May 2017

Popular New Farm resident Neville Sinclair Clifford, 76, was farewelled on Thursday April 20 at a packed St Patrick’s Church requiem mass celebrated by Fr Ellis Clifford, Neville’s brother. He was born on February 5, 1941, but daughter Jo-Anne told mourners that for half his life he celebrated on the 6th, explaining “that he was always late!” Neville grew up in Gayndah and boarded at Nudgee College for two years in grades 9 and 10. Although a short stay, it started a lifelong relationship with the school. His dedication to the Nudgee Old Boys’ Association brought him well-deserved recognition as he was honoured in 2013 with the “Signum Fidei” award for his services to the Old Boys.

Leaving school to become a banker, he worked in branches across Queensland and northern New South Wales, devoting almost 39 years to the banking industry and surviving five armed holdups in his career. His innate ability to treat everybody with equal respect, his honesty and business acumen ensured his advancement through the bank. Although Neville and his widow Glenda had both worked in banking, it was at Coles New Farm that they first ran into each other. Neville invited Glenda to have a home-cooked meal of steak and spaghetti covered with tomato soup. The dish improved over the years and the rest is history. Neville’s other great love was football. He was a proud foundation member of the Broncos NRL Club, a regular at Crosby Park and Lang Park and never missed watching State of Origin games. Neville’s decency and his gentle, kind and caring nature touched the lives of many while his humour and comradery won him friendships everywhere. He leaves behind wife Glenda and two children Jo-Anne and Michael (whose mother and Neville’s first wife Betty pre-deceased him) and four grandchildren.

Auction under the stars Principal Matt Lancashire

Ray White New Farm and Spring Hill’s sixth Auction Under the Stars is rapidly approaching, with the team aiming to replicate their recipe for success; auctions, great food and drink and the best property line up to date. Principal of Ray White New Farm, Matt Lancashire, said that they’ve had amazing successes at previous events. “This time we’re even more excited than we were for the last event,” Mr Lancashire said. “Our clearance rates have been extraordinarily high and well above industry standard,” he said. Last event Ray White sold 17 out of 21 under the hammer, then secured contracts for 20 out of the 21 in the 48

villageNews I May 2017

next 24 hours. “The quality of the properties under the hammer at this event is the best we’ve had to date,” he said. “If you want a snapshot of the inner city Brisbane market this is the event you’ll want to come to. “There’s New Farm houses, penthouses in the inner-city, big colonials, anything that you can think of that’s in high demand we’ve got on the line up for the night – a vast array of different, good quality properties.” LONgTIME are back on board to handle the catering, along with many other sponsors offering their fantastic services on the night, much to Mr Lancashire’s delight.

“It’s very important we support local business – Tyrone from LONgTIME has put together a specific menu for the night with some of their signature dishes as well,” he said. “We’re blessed to have them on board for the night. “REA and Courier Mail have been amazing with their generousity towards this event. “Conveyancing Connection are also involved, who are our preferred conveyancers and lawyers - they’ll be available to do on site legal advice “The Loan Market are also involved

to help attendees get the best rates on loans. Haesley Cush is also signed up for the night to auctioneer. “He doesn’t need a big introduction – his name is synonomous with auctions all over not only Queensland but the country,” Mr Lancashire said. Those interested in the night can register their interest by contacting Ray White. Ray White New Farm: 3254 1022 Ray White Spring Hill: 3144 5200

I met with a friend from Sydney last week. He’s a real estate guy too and he was amazed that the Reserve Bank had held interest rates. His comments would likely resonate with many Sydneysiders who are spruiking the unaffordability of Australia’s real estate capital. In the same week I spoke to friends in Townsville, Rockhampton and Airlie Beach who were moping up after Debbie blew in to town — It seems that it is adversity season in the far north. Between the market crashing and the water rising it has been a tough couple of years for our hardened brothers and sisters up there. To round out the week I spent a few days in Darwin. The market up there is facing similar struggles to those in many locations from Perth to Gladstone dealing with the hangover of the resources sonic boom. The question is what’s more important, making Sydney affordable or keeping the wheels turning everywhere else? Like beauty, affordability is in the eye of the beholder. While the inner cities were once the cosmopolitan precincts that is also changing. Australia/Brisbane has some incredibly affordable property, but sometimes it’s not in the location that buyers pin as their first choice. So as the city centres start to stretch and young couples are moving further out there are many examples of urban hubs popping up in areas that were previously baron of good coffee, bearded barrista’s and fresh cuisine. While rates are low, getting in to the market is easier and once you’re in the market the benefits of capital growth are shared among the homeowners. Managed wisely these gains can help move property owners back toward the suburbs they initially wanted to buy in, but that’s if they still want to live there. Remember, New Farm once was the place where no one wanted to live.

Newstead North has arrived — introducing the Newstead Series

Newstead Series is the culmination of 25 years working in the residential space. This experience enabled me to conceptualise a unique collection of buildings that provide a contemporary alternative to traditional living spaces.
