Boutique hotel for the sage guest to open in James St By Mike O’Connor A $35 million, 94 room boutique hotel will be built adjacent to the Queens Arms Hotel in James Street. The four and a half star property will be named Sage and be operated by the Singapore-based Silver Needle Hospitality group which also operates the NEXT hotel in the Queen Street Mall. The managing director of Pacifica Developments, Russell McCart, who is representing the developers said it was planned to have the hotel operating by early 2017. Mr McCart said the existing heritage listed Queens Arms Hotel would remain as it is. “It’s undergone a significant refurbishment and there are further renovations planned for this year so the two properties will complement and flow into other each,” he said. The hotel will target both the corporate market and leisure travellers. “There are a lot of apartments being built in the area but if you’re a business traveller - and I travel a lot - you prefer a hotel. “I don’t want an apartment. I don’t want a kitchen. I want a quality hotel room with a comfortable bed. “And on the weekends, it will be a great place for people to stay when they come to town for the football or other special events. “If you’re going to stay in Brisbane you want to be in a place like James Street with its restaurants, shops and markets. It’s got a great level of excitement and energy.“The finishes on Sage are going to be pretty groovy. I’ve done a lot of developments over the years and this will be pretty special,” he said. Silver Needle Hospitality Group operates hotels under the NEXT, Sage, Chifley, Country Comfort, Australia Hotels and Sundowner Inns brands.

Teneriffe Festival website design competition opens

THE Teneriffe Festival is about to head into its seventh year and organisers think it is time to give the popular event’s website a major facelift. In previous years organisers have collaborated with locals and design students to help shape the festival’s branding and this year the initiative is being extended to inviting designers to work with the festival board to redesign the website. Attractive prize money will be offered, as well as the opportunity to add a major Brisbane festival website design to the portfolio of the successful applicant. Interested designers can express interest in receiving a design brief and a list of key milestones by emailing Jillian at media@teneriffefestival.org Registrations for expressions of interest close on Friday, 26 February.

No point parking the blame for car space squeeze fiasco on decisions from past decades

CENTRAL Ward Councillor Vicki Howard was on the money when, in the January issue of Village News, she described parking for the James Street shopping precinct as “woefully inadequate.”

the comment By Mike O’Connor

Cr Howard said the blame for this lay with the Soorley city council administration which had failed to provide sufficient parking when the original development was approved. Whatever the historical origins of the problem, the reality is that Jim Soorley departed the lord mayor’s office in 2003 and since then, the parking crisis has deepened. The opening last year of the huge Pottery Barn retail outlet in the precinct, approved without the addition of a single extra car parking space has, predictably, exacerbated this. As Cr Howard pointed out, an upcoming and adjoining development will provide more parking, as it should,

but it will also attract more vehicles. Meanwhile, I sit in my car in the James Street car park with the engine idling while I wait for someone to vacate a parking space so that I can shop. A young woman emerges holding an ice cream and gets into her car. My hopes soar. She starts the engine, the brake lights flare – and she sits there for the next 10 minutes eating and staring at her phone. In the end I give up. The ice cream wins and I drive down to Gasworks Plaza to do my shopping where I have at least a fighting chance of getting a park. I can only imagine the frustration of James Street merchants who stand and watch as intending customers tire of waiting for a park and take their dollars elsewhere. Parking in the area will always be an issue but to open a retail outlet the size of Pottery Barn without providing any additional parking makes no sense at all.

Grace faces fiery media baptism and heavy workload in new portfolio By Mike O’Connor GRACE Grace, newly appointed Minister for Employment, Industrial Relations, Racing and Multicultural Affairs, has survived her media baptism by fire. Quoted in one report as saying there was little that could be done about youth unemployment, the newly minted minister endured a barrage of criticism. “It was unfair and taken out of context. It’s absolute nonsense to say I would ever walk away from youth unemployment. I’ve fought for jobs all my life,’’ she says in an interview in her Spring Hill electorate office. “The economic slowdown makes job harder to find. The mining industry has slowed down but there’s a lot we can do, particularly with the dollar being a bit down which means there’s potential for export growth. “The Queen’s Wharf project will be a huge development for young people. There’s a lot of youth who will be picked up for long term sustainable jobs,” she says. State member for Brisbane Central encompassing Fortitude Valley, New

Farm, Newstead, Bowen Hills and Windsor, Grace is keenly aware that development has become a political issue in the area “These are very old, beautiful suburbs that I represent and there’s the strongest community sentiment out there that I’ve ever known and I’ve lived in the electorate all my life,’’ she says. “I think we have to get the balance right when it comes to development and there’s a feeling out there in the community that it’s shifted too much in the developers’ favor.” She says the state government is looking at a bill that will restore that balance. She cites parking as another issue. “Is there enough parking and traffic management around these developments? Have they got good access to their car parks?’’ she asks. Grace says the proposal to construct a 47 storey building beside the Customs House showed a lack of awareness of the surrounding environment. “There seems to be a lack of looking at the environment around these projects. I guess this is the issue with

State member for Brisbane Central Grace Grace. the proposed 47 storeys beside Customs House. “To ignore the surrounds is like saying you’ve got the right to build 47 storeys no matter what you are near and what you do to the aspect. I think that’s incorrect and I think that’s where the balance is getting out of kilter,’’ she says. Grace concedes that Fortitude Valley after dark is now marred by alcohol fuelled violence and backs lockout plans. “The ethos that I have is that the safest place for patrons to be is in the actual establishments. Most of this stuff happens when they’re walking the streets. “That’s part of this lockout after 1am. You decide where you want to go in the Valley and if you want to stay there until five am if it’s licensed for that or 3am then go right ahead. “If you leave you’ve got two options – get a coffee or something to eat because you’re not going to get a drink or go home,” she says. “A lot of this is happening between certain times and out on the street and for the government to do nothing isn’t an option. There’ll be an opportunity for everyone to have input but the police are saying they think these proposals will work.” Given Grace’s background of as a former general secretary of the Queensland Council of Unions, her appointment as Minister for Industrial Relations raised the ire of some employer groups with a Chamber of Commerce spokesperson saying she would have to “bend over backwards to demonstrate impartiality.” She remains unfazed by the criticism. “I don’t think at any time in my career I’ve had an employer organization come out fiercely against me. They understand we’re the Labor Party and where our policies come from. We understand they’re employers but like anything, it’s about a balanced approach. “Trade unions have a role to represent their members, employers have got a role to represent their members,’’ she

says. As Minister for Racing, she is responsible for overseeing an industry that has been wracked by scandal, chief among them the use of live baiting for greyhounds. She says the forthcoming appointment of a full time integrity commissioner and a seven member board will address the issues. “The new structure comes under the bill that’s before the house at the moment following a commission of inquiry, separating integrity from the commercial arm of Racing Queensland. “Currently the integrity commissioner is Jim O’Sullivan, a part time commissioner who has no staff, no resources and no authority. “We’re moving to a full time commissioner under this bill who will have the authority to run the integrity part of all three codes of racing. A new seven member board will be part of the bill. We’ve advertised and we’re down to short listing,” she says. Grace’s father migrated from Italy in 1952. “Mum came out in 1954. Dad went cane cutting to save enough money to bring her out. We’re very proud ItalianAustralians,” he says. “I think Dad’s very proud of what I’ve achieved but he worries when he sees stuff that is said that doesn’t reflect what his daughter stands for so I’m trying to educate the family and toughen them up. `That’s politics,’ I tell them.’’ Her one regret is that her mother, who died a few years ago, was not able to share her father’s pride. Grace dismisses the suggestion that she has become “The Minister for Everything’’ but admits to a heavy workload. “In politics, family life suffers. I think every politician will tell you that. I didn’t have a holiday over Christmas but in any case I had too much to do and wouldn’t have been able to relax. Maybe over Easter I’ll get a few days off,” she says.

Cyclists ready to burn up Mt Coo-tha Dockside fundraising date for desert driving bash duo

By Ebony Graveur THE steep climb to and lofty vistas of Mt Coot-tha will be crowded with cyclists from amateur to elite helping to raise money for charity on 13 February. The Brisbane Coot-tha Burn 2016 draws cyclists from near and far for a series of races and the opportunity to support two local charities, as well as the chance to win a share of the $40,000 cash prize pool. The event starts with a 2km time trial up the mountain, followed by a sequence of novelty races, including categories such as Fixie, Costume, Unicycle and more. A race that tests cunning and strategy over pace alone will be held in the afternoon, providing elite cyclists with an opportunity to outsmart as well as outpace other competitors. Lord Mayor Graham Quirk says the Burn is “a great opportunity for local and interstate cyclists to experience Mt Coottha at its best”. Professional cyclist Jens Voigt, who boasts a 17 year cycling career, will appear as a guest of honour. “I’m so excited to be offered this opportunity,” said Voigt. “I can’t wait to burn the hill with everyone. It’s going to hurt a lot but be a lot of fun. I’ve seen the hill and I’ll be ready.” Participants who raise $1500 or more are being invited to ride with Voigt

ANITA Jakins and Marsha Strelow have teamed up to take on this year’s annual Variety 4WD Bash to raise money for children’s charity Variety. Every entrant must raise money for Variety and Anita and Marsha are hoping to raise $10, 000 for their run. They will be hosting a ‘Red Dinner’ on 24 February at The Landing @ Dockside. For Anita, who has previously completed the Bash, the people that she meets along the way are the most rewarding aspect of the adventure. “The journey will be the people that take it. The biggest reward that I found the first time I did it was the amazing people that give their time.” Anita spent her childhood on a cattle farm in the Northern Territory and is undaunted by the prospect of navigating the Simpson Desert. “I know how to use a winch, I know where the spotlights are, and I know how to say ‘over’ on a CB radio,” she said. The Bash requires participants to drive through some of Australia’s most remote regions by 4WD, whilst visiting remote country towns and raising money for Variety.

Anita Jakins with Marsha Strelow. The Bash was originally created by businessman and philanthropist Dick Smith, who set out in June 1985 with a group of people, a few old cars and a desire to raise money for charity. Whilst driving from Sydney to Bourketown in Far North Queensland, they raised $250, 000. This year the Bash is running from Charleville in Central Queensland through the Simpson Desert, where contestants will have to navigate over 1000 sand dunes, before finishing up in the renowned wine region of the Barossa Valley in South Australia. New lease on life as Eccleston lodging house recaptures the charm and style of its past

WHILE awaiting the city bus on Merthyr Road in front of the Little Loco Café, some commuters are sure to feel their curiosity piqued about Eccleston, the venerable Queenslander just across the road on the corner with Bailey Street.

historicalsociety by Gerard Benjamin

It was possibly built in the 1880s by carpenter Johannes Lather, who, with his wife Lisette, lived there until the early 1890s. From the verandah, what magnificent water views they must have enjoyed across the green river flats dotted with the odd house and plenty of cows. By 1893, the house had new residents: William Fowler Houston and his wife Eulalie (Lallie). The couple had married in Sydney in 1888, and soon moved to Brisbane where he worked as a commercial traveller for the prominent firm of general merchants, D.L. Brown & Co. On 6 March, 1896, however, Lallie’s life changed forever. That day, William,

aged only 42, died at the house, leaving her with three daughters under the age of seven, and an infant son. The railway inspector’s daughter from Chester in England was thrown on her mettle to keep the house and sustain her children. The obvious solution was to take in lodgers. Weeks after the funeral, she began advertising: “COMFORTABLE Home offered. Married Couple, two Ladies, or two Gentlemen”. It was made easier by sending the two older daughters to Stanthorpe for a convent education. Lallie Houston was clearly a woman not backward in coming forward. In 1912, she wrote to the Brisbane Courier questioning milk’s increase to sixpence per quart, and two years later, she hosted a meeting of the Council of the Merthyr branch of the Queensland Women’s Electoral League. Soon after the declaration of World War I, Mrs Houston’s son Frank, a draper, enlisted. He was wounded on the first day of the Gallipoli landings in 1915. Three months later, Lallie wrote an impassioned letter to Premier T.J. Ryan, querying the hold-up in mail reaching the men overseas. “I and my boy’s sisters have written

Later he became a lieutenant, before coming back to Eccleston after the war. In the early 1930s, lodgers were still being attracted by advertisements which read: “ECCLESTON, Merthyr Road, New Farm Wharf car, bedroom, kitchenette, ladies, every convenience, moderate. Its new owner, Nala Perkins along with her daughter Jacque, instituted a major clean-up. They envisaged that the home’s gracious charm could be restored sufficiently to make it attractive to a new generation of visitors. Within a year, as “Ellie’s Guest House”, Eccleston began a new chapter in its history. “It’s remarkable to think that Lallie Houston owned this house for almost 60 years,” said Nala. “If she were alive today what stories she could tell.” “In fact, had we known earlier about this interesting woman, you never know that we mightn’t have called the home Lallie’s instead of “Ellie’s”.

Andrew Jenkins -- a life well lived

By David Hinchliffe

THE best that can be said of someone is that they leave their community a better place. That certainly can be said for reconstructive surgeon and local philanthropist Dr Andrew Malcolm Jenkins, who died last month. Originally from the UK, Andrew’s parents brought their young family to Australia in 1957 and settled in inner Brisbane. He attended Grammar, made his home and career here and lived the last decades of his life in the Newstead/New Farm community. Andrew conducted his highpressured and complex surgical career reconstructing faces for accident and burns victims working for many years in the public sector as well as having a day surgery located in the Valley. In addition to his role in groundbreaking microsurgery, Andrew found time to help raise and care for his own family, Esther, Clarissa, Toby, Morgan and Mardi, as well as his extended family with his loving partner Erica. He was also a frustrated interior decorator, cook, landscape designer, triathlete, fisherman, vigneron, olive oil producer, traveller, voracious reader and even a poet. Like many high achievers, a busy career, multiple passions and hobbies and family life were still not enough for Andrew. He wanted to contribute to his community. He demonstrated his kindness and

One of his most recent public appearances was at a fundraiser for the centre late last year where he donated back a painting of mine which I’d originally donated to the centre to raise funds. Despite poor health, he showed courage, patience and humanity right to the very end. He was farewelled by a large number of family, friends, patients and community leaders at his service in St John’s Cathedral. He has left our world a better place for his being here. villageview by Beth J Leach From the perspective of human evolution, some researchers believe the typical eating schedule of contemporary western society is abnormal. New evidence suggests that intermittent fasting could not only assist the fight against obesity and diabetes but also heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s. The guinea pig in me decided to take the plunge into the world of intermittent fasting in conjunction with low impact exercise and I must say, the results were surprising. and mentally. Around the 1900s momentum gathered with doctors to use intermittent fasting as a method of treating some diseases. Whilst some may consider this extreme behaviour there is a growing body of research to suggest other. The 5:2 Fast Diet is extremely popular around the world and is based on the premise of eating normally five days a week and then for two days a week eating a quarter of your normal calorie intake. (Of course, the success of any fasting schedule relies on not overeating on your normal days.) Fasting can take any form you like; skipping a meal on particular days or, as I prefer, fasting every other day and eating normally on weekends. From my experience I found that fasting gives me more energy - digesting food is a tiring process, I don’t miss food or feel hungry, my joint inflammation improved and I succumbed to viruses going around the office less. As a concept, fasting challenges the primary structure of our traditional paradigm, how we divide up our days, our belief system and way of life. This experiment becomes extremely interesting (even humorous) when you share with others what you are doing, so be warned if you’re going to try this yourself …“You’re doing what??!!”

Powerhouse goes green We have just completed the largest solar installation to date on the heritage-listed Brisbane Powerhouse. This new 100 kilowatt system is the next step in Council’s vision for a cleaner, greener and sustainable city and will produce renewable energy for use on-site for things like performance lighting, reducing the amount of electricity drawn from the grid by approximately 140,000 kilowatt hours per year. These solar panels build on the Powerhouse’s legacy as a power provider, and will contribute to an environmentallyfriendly future for the New Farm landmark. We made the decision for Council to purchase 100 per cent GreenPower in 2011, so although Brisbane Powerhouse has been powered by a green source for many years, the solar panels will help reduce electricity costs.

COUNCIL CONNECTIONS

COME on Vicki Howard, I know there is a Council election in March, but you don’t have to tell porkies. You blamed me in the last Village News for the absence of parking at Pottery Barn. When the James Street market was approved about 20 years ago, let’s remember that that whole area was a wasteland. A one-story office building was approved with the correct number of car parks. It has recently been replaced by more retail, and that requires many more car parks for shoppers. You approved the development without the required number of car parks, so you are totally responsible for the lack of car parking at Pottery Barn. In fact all over the James St precinct you have allowed parking to be removed. It is your Council’s relaxation of parking requirements, relaxation of developments to the boundary, and your doubling of heights all over New Farm and Teneriffe that is ruining our suburb. I have refrained from making public statements about Council elections since I retired, but I will not have a Councillor blame me for their own poor decisions. Jim Soorley New Farm

Pharmacist advice the best medicine for PBS changes

THE New Year is a time of uncertainty for older residents of New Farm peninsula and surrounds, with major changes to the pharmaceutical benefits scheme (PBS) now in effect. A range of popular paracetamol products such as Panadol Osteo and Panamax were removed from the PBS from 1 January, meaning they are no longer be subsidised and customers are required to pay the full price. A number of other items have also been removed such as some aspirin tablets, chloramphenicol eye products, hydrocortisone skin creams and ointments, iron/folic acid supplements, electrolytes, urine test strips and Vitamin B12 injections. The Valley Discount Drug Store managing pharmacist Chris Owen said the removal of paracetamol products from the PBS would have a significant impact on the area’s retirees and nursing home residents, many of whom rely on it for pain relief. He said in the last 12 months more than 1000 boxes of Panadol Osteo had been sold from The Valley Discount Drug Store alone. “Because it’s such a high-volume product a lot of customers will be worse off,” he said. He is hoping to offset the financial pain by allowing customers to save on other PBS-listed prescriptions. Pharmacies will have the option of paying to discount their patients’ co-payments on PBS prescriptions by up to $1. Mr Owen said The Valley store would be paying the full $1 for concession customers who wished to take advantage of the offer. “We’ll be giving the full discount to try and alleviate the stress of PBS changes ... we’ve got a pretty loyal customer base,” he said. Mr Owen said all customers should discuss their situation with their pharmacist and work out what will be best for them under the new system.

The frontage now features three box containers, all painted black, outfitted as food service outlets, creating a new look and foodie trend for that part of the now celebrated Brisbane street. Yes, the popular James Street is stretching farther up the hill. The trio of ‘Box on James’ outlets include ‘The Shed’ featuring the coffee brand Where’s Marcel (with Phil Di Bella and Michael Drummond as investors), Flourish Superfoods Cafe (by fitness fanatic Rob Van Der Westhuizen), and the Wolfgang Kelke’s The King of Cakes-owned ‘Brezel Co.’ selling bagels, pretzels

and loaves of bread amongst other patisserie offerings. It’s all a refreshing take on quick food choices for breakfast and lunch with alfresco seating. Peter Lynch was born into a Medical Practitioners family with his dad Dr Tony Lynch and his grandfather Dr Alban Lynch both practising in Brunswick Street in different eras, Tony where the Judith Wright Centre now stands, and Alban where the Sushi Station is. age for some years, he was not inspired to follow the family career path. It may have been the postmatch dressing room “carnage” he witnessed, with his Dad “fixing up busted players”, or it may have been the positive vibes he got when he visited the New Farm office of longtime architect Geoffrey Pie. Immediately the young Peter was enthralled with the art, design and creativity features in Geoffrey’s office. Peter stated the effect the noted architect had on him. “Geoffrey Pie had a particular passion for typography, and I have followed that line,” he said. Peter had attended the Holy Spirit School at New Farm to Grade 3, then went to Terrace, which introduced Art as a serious subject in his first Art year right through to Grade 12. “In previous years the Terrace students had to walk down the road to the Art classes at Brisbane Girls Grammar. Coincidentally, I ended up marrying a Grammar girl, Adrienne, after meeting her at Gertie’s restaurant up the road from here,” he said. Despite his attending many Valleys games with his dad, Peter never pursued a rugby league career either, happy enough to enjoy cycling around his suburb. The Lynch family lived in Brunswick Street, opposite New Farm Park. Peter and his four siblings grew up playing in the park like it was their back yard. When he was 15, the Lynch family left New Farm for a bigger house at Auchenflower. Following his Grade 12, Peter attended QUT to achieve his Bachelor of Applied Science – Built Environment, then did post-graduate studies in Industrial Design. “Michael Bryce, of Bryce Design Consultants, employed me and I enjoyed working there under his guidance,” he said. “In 1993 I moved back to New Farm, buying 76 James Street. I was thrilled to be back. My parents (Tony

and Jill) also bought an investment property in the suburb. It was an exciting time in the New Farm/ Valley/Teneriffe district. The Urban Renewal Plan opened up investment opportunities. “I bought this block here, a 688 sq. m area on the corner of Harcourt and James Streets. We live in the house and my office of Entica Design Strategy is on-premises, and the remaining frontage now has the Box-on-James complex as the new eye-catching feature, with the Anton & Blair Hair Salon and corner shop Waterlily (Women’s Beauty Products & Spa) all part of my block. “In 1993 the corner was a hamburger/fish and chip shop, but since then it evolved into a Mexican imported products shop to a hairdressing salon, to jewellery store, to now Waterlily. Before 1993 the house/shop complex was a meeting place with card tables for cabbies as a change-over point. “When the historic Coca Cola buildings were demolished to mark the beginning of the Centro complex I lined up to buy memorabilia, including the two prized original industrial doors which are now mounted onto the rear wall of the house. “I employ a part-time administrator and bookkeeper, and other freelance designers. The path to here at Entica had begun with my first years with Bryce Design Consultants, with experience there in consulting with national and international clients. “I then worked in London, and later returned to work on South Bank. In 1993 I started Peter Lynch Design and in 2002 changed the name to Entica Design Strategy.” Construction is also going on near Peter’s property. Just as the drive-in bottle shop at the Queens Arms Hotel in James Street, New Farm, closed its doors for the last time last month, Peter, from three doors up, and thinking outside the square on a more trivial basis, drove his car through the

Peter arranged a friend to photograph the “momentous” event then posted his photo on Facebook “to commemorate the moment in time”. A construction fence attached to the hotel and surrounding the carpark was quickly put in place, and a 93 room boutique accommodation hotel is being built. The walk-in Bottle Shop within the Queens Arms remains. I researched this hotel redevelopment on the internet, and a report states that a $35 million redevelopment on the site is set to be named a Sage hotel, with four levels, with a 4.5 star rating, basement parking, a restaurant and

boutique, and a wine cellar on the ground level. It is expected to open by June next year. The adjoining pub, the Queens Arms, will be revitalised to make this precinct the most exciting part of the district. Peter and his wife Adrienne, a psychologist, have a son, Soren, 11, who attends Nudgee. “It has been my ambition to complete my own property to maximise its potential for the size of the block,” Peter added. “Some time ago I began to reflect the broader design in maximisation of an area, and this Box on James project has reignited my interest in modular units and prefabricated architecture, such as recycled box containers. I am further exploring financial and environmental outcomes.”

BOWEN Hills resident Charles Werb is in final preparations for his Outer Edge Polar Challenge which will see him attempt to snow sail to the South Pole in a wind powered sled of his own design. Mr Werb, who is raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland, will attempt to challenge the current world record for distance covered by wind power in a 24 hour period in Antarctica. Mr Werb developed the idea for the journey from a love of wind power and the fact that it has never been done before. “They’ve skied it, they’ve hiked it, they’ve biked it, they’ve kited it … no one’s ever sailed it.” The decision to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland came after his father passed away from the disease. “My dad got leukaemia about four years ago, and it turned into Lymphoma, so he fought Lymphoma for about three and a half years, then he passed away; and I saw what a terrible disease it is,” said Mr Werb. “I want the money that we raise to go towards housing for families whose

Deidre’s lifetime love for New Farm never wavered DEIDRE Lillian Fox, who spent many of her 89 years living at New Farm and who had a bond with the suburb going back to her grandmother’s ownership of a boarding house in Terrace Street, passed away on 11 January. Deidre was born at the Private Hospital at Wooloowin on 31 March, 1926, as the first child to William and Lillian Fox. The family lived at Windsor, where her parents and Deidre soon welcomed her brother Bill who was born in December 1928, and later her second brother Rodney born in September 1942. Deidre attended Windsor State School from 1931 to 1939, after which she went to Brisbane Girls Grammar School, where she graduated with her junior certificate in 1941. During her early years, her father worked for Queensland Railways so the family was able to travel around the State, visiting relatives and seeing new places and it was no doubt from these early experiences that Deidre developed her love for travel, which she was able to continue to do later in life. As a child she participated in and was a member of a number of organisations including the Brownies

and later the Girl Guides, which she thoroughly enjoyed. During World War II, and with Brisbane believed to be under threat from the Japanese, in 1942 Deidre joined the Mine Watching organisation, a part of the Women’s National Emergency Legion. With Brisbane housing a number of US and Australian navy vessels, and with large military storehouses located beside the Brisbane River, the fear was that the Japanese would plant explosive mines in the river to destroy these facilities. Once she was old enough to travel on her own she became a regular attendee at the Ann St Church of Christ. There, she played an integral part in the life of church and attended youth group, helped in providing meals for soldiers, taught in the kindergarten and Sunday school and was a member of the church choir. The year after finishing school, Deidre commenced full time work at Trittons Pty Ltd in George Street in 1942, where she worked for six years before moving to Dalgety and Co, where she continued to work until 1956. During this time, she met and later married William Hovard at the Ann St

Vale Deidre Lillian Fox. Church of Christ. They were married on 11 September, 1954, and moved into a house in Everton Park. After 12 months they then bought a block of land at Mitchelton and built a new home together. Deidre and Bill were soon blessed with two wonderful daughters, Wendy who was born on 2 November, 1957, and Andrea born on 6 August, 1959. In 1985 she moved into the Church of Christ retirement units at Glenn Eagles in New Farm. This was opportune as her mother Lillian was also residing at Glenn Eagles, so Deidre was able to help look after her mum in her later years until her death in 2002. Before and after her overseas travels, Deidre filled her time at New

Farm doing volunteer work for a number of organisations including Meals on Wheels, Old Peoples Welfare League, and in particular she loved family history, and spent many hours delving into the past trying to track down details for the family tree. Early in 2015 Deidre moved into the Villa Maria Nursing Home, as she was no longer able to care for herself and it was here that she passed away in the early hours of 11 January, aged 89, with both Wendy and Andrea by her side. Deidre and Wendy had attended St Michael and All Angels on Brunswick St for the past 15 years and her ashes will be interned at the columbarium located in the grounds of St Michael’s church.

$66 million upgrade for Brisbane’s oldest sewer A 5.8km section from James Street in Fortitude Valley to the Eagle Farm Pump Station is part of a Queensland Urban Utilities upgrade to Brisbane’s oldest sewer pipe in one of the most unique sewer projects ever undertaken in Australia. The historic 100-year-old sewer pipe, which carries 60 per cent of the city’s sewage and lies eight storeys below the ground, is being rehabilitated in the $66 million upgrade. Queensland Urban Utilities spokesperson, Michelle Cull, said the total upgrade involved relining 5.8km of sewer main from James Street to the Eagle Farm station in Bunya Street. “With the first stage between Cooksley St and Riverview Terrace completed, work is now being carried out between Amy St and Cooksley St,” she said. “So far we’ve relined 1.7km of pipe with another 4.1km to go. The work will be carried out Sunday to Thursday between 8pm and 5am. “We’re using the latest trenchless technology to avoid digging up the road and disrupting traffic.” The award winning project, which is one of the most unique sewer

rehabilitations ever undertaken in Australia due to the age and depth of the pipe, is due to be completed by 2019. It will extend the operational life of the pipe by at least another 50 years. Queensland Urban Utilities has also assured residents that the S1 main sewer is already big enough to cope with all the large-scale apartment developments underway in the area. In addition, a new sewer pipe will be laid under Fortitude Valley to increase the capacity of the local network, with work expected to begin mid-year. For further information, visit www. urbanutilities.com.au/networkupgrades/projects-current/s1-mainsewer-upgrade or contact the project hotline on 1800 071 230.

Disability service organisation secures bright future from sale ONE of Queensland’s leading disability service organisations, CPL (formerly known as the Cerebral Palsy League), has finalised the sale of its New Farm site. As Queensland transitions to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) this year, CPL is preparing for a bright future and the opportunity to support more people with disabilities and their families than ever, providing them with true choice and control over the services they receive. CPL has been based at the Oxlade Drive address for more than 65 years. It started as a school for children with disabilities and is currently being used as a Head Office while also running creative community support programs. Over time CPL has increasingly delivered services to clients in their own homes, schools, communities and service centres across Queensland, and the New Farm property has become unsuitable for the meeting the needs of a modern disability support organisation. CPL successfully tendered the site, which has been purchased by Brisbane-based investment property company Spyre Group, following its marketing by JLL real estate.

CPL CEO Angela Tillmanns said the site’s sale would provide the organisation with a solid foundation as it makes the transition from being paid in advance to being paid in arrears under the NDIS. “We were very conscious that the New Farm land is special, for its history in the local area through the role CPL and the local community has played for many decades in supporting generations of Queenslanders with disabilities. “We are looking at new premises for our Head Office which can better support our needs in the future; we need better public transport options for our clients and staff, improved building accessibility for our clients, and room to grow into the future plus parking and on-road congestion is an ongoing problem as the density of housing in New Farm increases,” she said. Ms Tillmanns said a farewell on the New Farm site would be held sometime in 2016 as preparations for relocating progresses. “While it will be sad to leave New Farm after all these years it is an exciting time ahead where people with disability will have more choice and control over their supports,” she said.

Rafe Berding now has his place in history. By Ebony Graveur 28-YEAR-OLD Rafe Berding from Teneriffe has been named the 2015 Cleo Media Bachelor after entering the competition as “a bit of fun”. The competition was first run in 2014 by Cleo’s magazine’s owner the Bauer Media Group in partnership with AdNews and is an off-shoot of the annual Cleo Bachelor award which has run since 1985. “It was an industry ad promotion we, Bauer Media, ran in conjunction with the official Cleo Bachelor to get advertisers excited,” said Luke Robinson, Head of Trade Marketing and Communications at Bauer Media. Rafe’s win saw him invited to the Cleo Bachelor of the Year event in November and included flights and accommodation, a photoshoot, and a clothing voucher. “My entry in the competition started as a bit of fun, I heard about it from a close colleague,” he said. Entrants had to outline their dating strategies, recite their life mottos, and articulate why they believed they should be chosen. Rafe’s entry photograph was feelgood, featuring him with a big smile in a pool on a sunny day with a dog close by. The dog, whose name is Mr Frank Collins, belongs to Rafe’s friend. “I borrow him from time to time,” said Rafe. “The dog picture sums up summer for me, poolside antics,’ said Rafe. “By all means, Frank is definitely the goodlooking one.” Rafe worked in customer service while pursuing his education, but the fact that no two days are ever the same in media attracted him to the industry. “I was drawn to it because it is such a fast-paced and multifaceted industry,” he said. “It is our responsibility to ensure that consumers are receiving the right information, in the right format, at the right time.” When he isn’t working as a communications and marketing executive, Rafe spends his time outdoors, with friends, and with family. With Bauer announcing the closure of Cleo last month, he will also occupy a place in media history.

Intergenerational interaction benefits both young and people living with dementia DO you know anyone suffering from dementia? It’s a degenerative disease of the mind which affects more often the elderly, but also others, leading to an inability to function independently and a need for full-time care in specialised aged care facilities. It can strike without warning, develop quickly or slowly and there is no known cure.

seniorsvoice by Tony Townsend

It is very distressing for the family, with some people becoming violent. As it only affects the mind, many people with dementia live long lives. But there is hope of some relief, if not a full recovery, and it comes in the form of interaction with the young. Last year the media covered two instances of pre-schoolers visiting aged care facilities with dementia patients and the benefits to all participants. Network 10 episode screened a show titled The Project in August, while the Sunday Mail in May reported on the Wesley Missions Wheller gardens community where Little Marchants childcare shares the same campus. In both cases the effect on the older generations was astonishing; dementia

sufferers regained their memories and were able to converse while parents reported on the very positive benefits for their children. Special relationships often developed between the two generations. National Seniors is watching these and other developments in aged care with interest and is urging all aged care facilities to consider regular contact with play groups and child care operators. New Farm Branch is back into full swing in February and following our general meeting on Wednesday 3 February, plans include: • Thursday mornings from 11am - Learn Mah-jong (Eastern style) at Café 63. • Friday 19 February - ‘Stitch and Bitch’ meeting from 9am in New Farm Library • Friday 19 February - Dinner from 6pm at Merthyr Bowls in Oxlade Drive when we particularly welcome those interested in National Seniors who cannot attend daytime activities. • Tuesday February 23 - Tour of Queensland Institute of Medical Research We celebrate our 26th birthday at the general meeting at 9.15am for 10am on Wednesday 2 March in the Uniting Church complex, Merthyr Road, with a fashion display from Portofino. Townhouses lure owner occupiers looking for luxury By Mike O’Connor

Twelve luxury townhouses built over three levels priced from $1.55 million to $1.7 million will be completed by midyear on the former site of the Corinya Nursing Home at 216-218 Moray Street. The Point Luxe townhouses, being developed by Pointcorp, range in size from 280m2 to 360m2 and feature individual plunge pools. Sales director Sam Patterson said the townhouse design would provide a pleasing streetscape for the area. Each townhouse has a slightly different floor plan and consists of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, two powder rooms, double garage and large rumpus room with kitchenette, balcony with built-in BBQ and courtyard while some are equipped with lifts. “This development offers excellent value. You would be lucky to get a shack at New Farm for $1.5 million and then you’d have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars renovating for that money. Point Luxe offers a combination quality and value and is definitely high end. The word luxury is used a lot out there to describe properties which are not really luxury but this is definitely a luxury development,’’ Mr Patterson said.

“We’re targeting owner-occupiers, not investors. Everyone out there seems to be targeting investors but with a luxury property such as this, all the interest has been from intending owner occupiers.” He said the market has evolved over the last 12 to 18 months with the re-emergence of upper end of the market and owner-occupiers looking to downsize out of the traditional family home into a quality product close to amenities. Within 2km of Brisbane CBD, Point Luxe New Farm is located on a level, elevated position in Moray Street within walking distance of transport and retail infrastructure. Each townhouse is set over three levels and is being marketed as the perfect house alternative to a house while having no external maintenance requirements. Custom joinery and tailored finishes are being fitted throughout, together with marble kitchens which flow to an outdoor balcony with built-in BBQ, designer marble ensuites and the latest in technology. Properties by Pointcorp include Highgate at Highgate Hill, which is under construction, and Sephora also at Highgate Hill.

Neighbourhood Centre welcomes new coordinator THE New Farm Neighbourhood Centre has welcomed its new coordinator, Michelle McLean, who has made the move from OzCare, where she worked as a Senior Social Worker. Ms McLean has been at the centre for just over two weeks, and said taking on the new position has been “very exciting” and has been made easy by the team of wonderful volunteers. Ms McLean has a rich background in working with local communities and as a teacher and social worker has taken on a variety of roles supporting people with psychiatric, physical and mental disabilities. Before her move to Brisbane in 2012, she worked at OzCare in Mackay with the Mental Health Services, where her initiative gave her the opportunity to develop the OzCare Young Person’s Group. Looking ahead to the coming year, the Neighbourhood Centre has a number of new projects underway, including the development of a therapy room where clients will have access to a visiting GP and a podiatrist. A dental clinic and upgrades to the on-site kitchen are also in the works for 2016. To contact the Neighbourhood Centre, call 33 585 600.

PAUL McLean, the Assistant Concierge at Fortitude Valley’s Emporium Hotel, has been admitted to the world’s most prestigious Concierge Society, Les Clefs d’Or, also known as The Golden Keys. The Emporium Hotel also claimed the title of Australia’s Leading Boutique Hotel at the 2015 World Travel Awards in Hong Kong, Paul is the fifth Golden Keys member the hotel has produced since opening in 2007, reflecting the commitment of the hotel to constant levels of excellence. An organization dedicated to accommodating every guest request and providing guaranteed, quality service, Les Clefs d’Or admits only the most dedicated concierges to their ranks. To achieve the honour, Paul had to complete an arduous admittance program over several months, which included compiling a detailed dossier of his work as the senior member of the hotel’s concierge team, evidence of community service, training and mentoring and detailed interviews with the Australian governing body. “We are extremely proud of what Paul has achieved,” said Emporium Hotel General Manager Peter Savoff, himself a member of the society.

Paul McLean. Mr Savoff said the Leading Boutique Hotel award was a reflection of every team member’s commitment to excelling every day, whatever their role. “Honours like this do not come easily, and we are humbled and thrilled at the same time,” he said. “The win was achieved by every single staff member; it was won by the owners in Tony and Fran John who seven years ago opened the doors to what was a new and exciting tourism offer for the country – a boutique, independently owned and operated luxury hotel, one defined by a very directional design and service commitment. Work has already begun on a second luxury Emporium Hotel, set to feature in the $650 million Southpoint development at South Bank. Like Emporium Hotel, Southpoint will introduce exciting new levels of design, service and luxury to Australia.

Nominations open for Rotary workmanship awards THE Rotary Club of New Farm is inviting the local community to participate in the Pride of Workmanship award program. Each year the Pride of Workmanship award recognises an attitude of pride in personal performance in the workplace and gives employers the opportunity to give recognition to employees where it is due. The awards highlight not only the employee, but the employer, and multiple awards are given each year depending on the quality of the nominations. Successful nominees will receive their awards at a presentation dinner to be held at Eves on the River in Teneriffe on Wednesday, 9 March. The awards are open to employers in the New Farm and Teneriffe areas and the closing date for nominations is the end of February. For more information or to get nomination forms, contact the New Farm Rotary Club President, Denise Buckby, on 0401377144.

Act quickly for Queensland Women’s Week grant CELEBRATIONS of the achievements of women and girls will be recognised through the awarding of grants totalling $75,000 state-wide for the Queensland Government’s inaugural Queensland Women’s Week from 7-13 March. Minister for Women Shannon Fentiman urged community organisations to apply for the grants, which range from $1000 to $5000. “Queensland Women’s Week aims to celebrate the achievements of women and girls and acknowledge the proven benefits for all when women play an equal role in business, leadership and government,” she said. “The theme for the week is ‘Good for her. Great for us. When women achieve, Queensland succeeds,’ and the grant-aided events, activities and projects should reflect this theme.” Applications for the grants close on 14 January, with recipients to be announced later this month. Funded activities or events are expected to occur in or around Queensland Women’s Week. For more information on the grants program and to apply visit www. queenslandwomensweek.com.au February 2016 villagenews

Dreams and aspirations in chalk

BEFORE I die, I would like to … travel to Egypt; … find true happiness; … see the jacarandas flower again next year; … achieve sobriety; … find an employer who does not know me to believe my skills are transferrable. These are just some of the messages that have been written anonymously on the “Before I Die” chalkboard on the front fence of the Merthyr Road Uniting Church. The idea for the board came from a viewing of a TED talk in which American public artist Candy Chang discussed how she turned the wall of a disused house into a giant chalkboard with the words "Before I Die" on it. She learnt it was a way people could be given an opportunity to reflect on what they really wanted out of their life, a way they could understand their neighbourhood, connect with others,

be encouraged and inspired by others. It is seen as an opportunity for people to express their hopes, dreams and aspirations, and might well be the first step in their journey to achieving all or part of that dream. Within 24 hours of the board going up outside the church it was evident that it was meeting a need in the community and that, not only was it a space where people were expressing their dreams, it was also being used to encourage others in reaching for them. It is a way in which Merthyr Road Uniting Church members have sought to provide a service to the community, and it is hoped that it might also provide insights for us into ways we might be of even further service. Once the board is full it is cleaned to make space for new “Before I Die” dreams.

New menu at Lamberts

By Alisa Cork • alisa@newfarmvillagenews.com.au

The refined unrefined

LAMBERTS Restaurant Head Chef Marcus Turner has turned to ocean-fresh seafood such as tenderly seared scallops with cauliflower panna cotta and seasonal fruits like mango, cherries and figs to create a delicious new summer menu. Superb grain fed beef cooked to order on the grill and house-made pasta dishes such as Lambert’s signature seafood fettuccini with ocean-fresh fish, prawns, mussels and squid are on the new menu while new arrivals for summer include a delicious Mango Financier of raspberry gel, passionfruit bavaroise, and coconut sorbet. Lambert’s also popular for sunset drinks, with an enticing menu of signature cocktails ranging from a classic Basil and Mint Mojito to a Frangelico and Vanilla Mule. Keep your eye out for the re-launch of their rooftop ‘Eagles Nest’ in mid-February. Lamberts Restaurant, The Point Hotel, Kangaroo Point p 1800 088 388 www.lambertsrestaurant.com.au

Viva Las Vegan

AFTER countless requests over the past twelve months, Doughnut Time has expanded into the vegan realm with the introduction of the Viva Las Vegan. The doughnut features a coconut and raspberry glaze and is topped with a pistachio crumb. It is available at the Fortitude Valley store and nationwide, and priced at $6. A vegan offering will remain on the Doughnut Time menu indefinitely in 2016, adding to the diversity of the product line at all stores. THE bar menu at the Pig n Whistle in Brunswick Street has some delicious quick lunch choices on their bar menu. Try the smoked beef brisket tacos with brown rice and chipotle mayo or the salt and pepper calamari with Japanese mayo and burnt lime. If you want something more substantial, opt for the restaurant menu which features some hearty dishes like slow cooked lamb shoulder to share or a mixed grill featuring Yorkshire pudding. IT was when Nicola Inger and Jessica Frank were approached by a Brisbane café asking them to create a granola recipe for their menu that they had a light bulb moment and realised there was a gap in the market for sugar free, gluten free, healthy granola that didn’t taste like cardboard. From developing the product and becoming addicted to their own genius over the course of a week, to now stocking to more than 20 stores across Queensland, The Unrefined based in New Farm, established just one year ago, and has to date generated a following of more than 27,000 on Instagram, released a granola product which is now available in 25 stores nationally and online, has released an eBook focused on cutting out sugar and earlier this month launched a swimwear label. Stockists of The Unrefined Granola include View Hotels, Raw Juicery, Hawthorne Garage, Synergy Pharmacy, The Produce Bulk Wholefoods, Blackbird Espresso, The Morning After café, Corbett & Claude and Vue Restaurant, with many more in the pipeline. Paleo acai bowls at yoflo

YoFlo has joined the move toward paleo introducing their acai bowl with a paleo muesli. I must admit I was a little hesitant but really enjoyed the fresh thick yogurt-like texture of the acai topped with bananas and strawberries. Their other options include yogurt of course and regular muesli and other toppings like fruit juice pearls. YoFlo, Gasworksplaza Newstead www.yoflo.com.au

Summer wine

DELATITE is a 5 Star winery situated on the rolling hills at the base of Mt Buller. Their approach to winemaking has been forged from the family’s history of working the land in Victoria for over 170 years and a commitment to producing outstanding wines using biodynamic principles. Delatite Pinot Gris was hand-picked in mid and late March 2014 and was then whole bunch pressed, undergoing wild fermentation. 30 per cent of the wine was fermented in-barrel to give the wine texture. This wine displays aromatics of ripe pear and floral characters, the palate follows up with these flavours and shows some subtle oak toastiness, with some spicy notes. Match this beautiful wine with oily fleshed fish such as flathead or salmon or with spicy chilli prawns, marinated octopus or even crispy pork belly. Available from Wine emporium, Malt Traders and Craft

Tenor singing sensation to open Queensland Pops TENOR singing sensation Mark Vincent will launch the dynamic new 2016 concert season of the Queensland Pops Orchestra at the QPAC concert hall on 5 March. Mark Vincent has carved out an impressive career on the concert stage since winning the third series of Australia’s Got Talent in 2009, aged just 16. His commanding stature and powerful voice earned him a contract with Sony Music, which resulted in no less than five albums making the ARIA Classical Top 20 music charts, with the Compass and The Great Tenor Songbook both certified gold in Australia. Mark debuted at the Queensland Pops in the 2014 Best of British concerts, and next month will showcase his biggest hits in his own “Best Of” show, drawing from a broad repertoire of the most memorable songs of all time. “Music is in me. You know, when you’re born with something inherently in you? I think we are all born with a voice capable of singing, but not everyone has it in them to use it. I grew up listening to all the beautiful

or the

Queensland Pops. arias, and I feel that when I sing, I really am the happiest guy on earth,” Mark said. “All my troubles are gone. And you know, many people have a great voice, an exceptional voice even, but what’s missing is the storytelling. It’s not just about singing notes, it’s always, always about telling a story.” Mark’s amazing tenor voice, which has a depth and clarity that belies his years, together with the genuine affinity he enjoys with his audience, will ensure the warmest afterglow long after the concert is over. His most recent album is entitled Best So Far, and he is sure to deliver above and beyond that pledge, accompanied by the Queensland Pops Orchestra.

Beth was without a doubt the perfect agent for me. I literally had an afternoon to look at property as I was visiting from abroad. Beth was friendly, attentive and had great local knowledge. We had a connection immediately and I felt very relaxed and at ease with her and her recommendations. So much so I put an offer on the flat we now own within an hour of seeing the property. I was recommended to Ray White New Farm and this was definitely the best recommendation for me. I am still looking for an other property and will 100% be contacting Beth to help us moving forward.” M and T.W (Buyers New Farm)

TALKING PROPERTY It has been an interesting start here in our local property market. The traffic is slowly coming back to the streets but most agencies in property management were back to full steam on the 4th January. After a tough 12 months with low attendance rates at open homes for rentals, January has brought its seasonal wave of tenants eager to secure a place before their year starts. This influx in activity has genuinely been like drought breaking rain with some inspections seeing over 30 people walk through the door. I’m not sure if this is just ‘January’ or a sign of things to come, but either way it’s here and it’s a welcome change. In sales, I have already knocked through a couple of Brisbane auctions, while the majority of my January auction work has been on the Gold Coast. Of the Brisbane auctions that I’ve conducted and from the many agents I’ve spoken too, January has seen a slight increase when compared to December (last month). Another excellent sign. If this continues then the market should perform in the same direction as it was indicating last year. The $2million+ prestige market should start to increase, lifestyle apartments 3bedroom+ etc in boutique buildings will be very popular and the unrenovated houses will still see the bulk of the action for the first quarter. 4 weeks in and I am already optimistic. We have not seen any indication of a drop off in interest, the prices from the sales that have occurred locally are in line with the strong 2015 prices and with the low interest rates this is all great news for local property!! Woolstores inspire design of development

NEWSTEAD based developer DevCorp is planning to build a 13-storey luxury apartment tower called Lume on a unique piece of land at Kangaroo Point. DevCorp Managing Director Murray Thornton is confident that the luxury apartments, which are designed for owner-occupiers, will prove popular. “We’ll be sold out by June. It’ll be well and truly gone by then,” he said. The location and shape of the future apartments - a corner site between two roads - is an amalgamation of

three properties. The challenging location of the site, along with the natural beauty and city-wide views of Kangaroo Point, were all factors that attracted Mr Thornton to the area. “From its position on the intersection of Shafston Ave and Main St, Lume is a beacon for Kangaroo Point,” Mr Thornton said. Lume will command views of Story Bridge, the CBD, Southbank and the cliffs below New Farm. For more information, or to arrange an inspection, call 1800 478 477 or go to lume.com.au.

Glen Boyle's new place. Brick Lane on Florence interior. LOCATED in the popular woolshed area of Teneriffe, local architect Joe Adsett’s new design, Brick Lane on Florence, is set to begin construction in early 2016. The location of the new site is set over three current house blocks, and is an area that Mr Adsett has had his eye on for a while. “I’ve always loved this site,” said Mr Adsett, “and I originally wanted to build an architectural office [there]. “I loved the idea of nestling a building between the grand timber Queenslanders perched up high and the iconic brick woolstores and character filled laneways winding back from the river’s edge.” Brick Lane on Florence will feature 18 corner apartments, designed to let in an abundant amount of light and cross ventilation. The historic woolstores that make up the landscape of the waterline in Teneriffe were something that Mr

Adsett wanted to replicate in the design of the building. “We wanted to create a building that was respectful to its context. The challenge in designing the corner apartments was retaining the vast quantities of exposed glass whilst also providing a degree of control to the external elements,” he said. “We started to explore perforated screens and developed a perforation in the form of a brickwork motif, which we actually created by taking rubbings of the brickwork patterns from the surrounding wool stores.” Mr Adsett’s architectural practice, Joe Adsett Architects, is also located on Florence St, Teneriffe. Brick Lane on Florence is being marketed by Heath Williams at Stack Projects on 0403976115 or Ryan Leddicoat on 0422132222. www.bricklaneonflorence.com.au
