he months are flying by and already Newell’s TRAVEL is gearing itself up for a hectic year. I am sure that many of you will have joined us at our annual Travel Show held in the centre of Truro on 12th March. Why is Florence a city I have returned to five times?

I’ll let you into my secret...

Kathie Ellis, manager of Falmouth visiting one of her favourite cities.

T

o wake up in Florence early morning and to discuss over Italian pastries, ham, cheese and, of course, coffee “shall we see “The David” today and perhaps take in the views atop Brunelleschi’s Dome? Perhaps if time permits with all those queues we could go to Piazza Michelangelo to take the iconic picture of the Florence cityscape?” Of course, we don’t actually queue anywhere as we have already purchased a combo ticket which allows us to jump the extraordinarily long queue at The Academia and also at other sights’ around the city. Nothing prepares you for the sight of “David”, tall and strong with his never ending gaze into the distance even though there are many replicas of him dotted around the city. The view from the Duomo is one not to be missed with the expanse of terracotta roof tiles like a jigsaw puzzle stretching out in all directions, it’s just the small matter of 463 steps that might get in your way! 4

NEWS

After a well-earned lunch break to rest those legs we take a slow meander through the streets where designer stores sit cheek by jowl with local artisan shops selling hand-made crafts, pottery and scents. We sit for a while in the Piazza del Signoria which is like an open air museum of sculpture and people watch while sipping Tuscan wine. From here the Uffizi Gallery and the Palazzo Vechio are but a few steps away. I know that in there is the secret door which leads into the Vasari Corridor and weaves its way through buildings and over the top of the Ponte Vecchio ending in the Pitti Palace on the opposite bank of the Arno. If time permits it is well worth viewing as this is where all the self-portraits of the ‘Masters’ hang, however today we walk on, another view is calling us. After wandering over the Ponte Vecchio with its gold shops tightly packed together and people jockeying for the best position to view the sparkling delights just inches from their noses, we eventually reach the Piazza Michelangelo. This charming Piazza has commanding views of Florence, and is the place to take in the image that you will automatically recall whenever you think of this wonderful city. Luckily for us we have timed it right and while sat with another glass of Tuscan Red the sun sets turning this Florentine vista into an even deeper shade of red. Fly from Bristol direct into Florence a new route for summer 2017. Kathie Ellis – Manager, Falmouth

Few places can compare with Italy’s art, architecture, music, design, scenery, food or wine, Tuscany’s striking countryside, the influence of the Renaissance and the world’s greatest ancient civilisation.

Mini Cruise TA S T E R

Rebecca Tuck (left) from our Kingsbridge branch and Tamsyn Goad from Bodmin onboard Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas

N

ewell’s TRAVEL runs a healthy training programme to keep their travel consultants fully abreast with what is on offer in the travel sector. They also have an outstanding relationship with the country’s leading tour operators who invite members of their staff to join familiarisation (FAM) trips where they enjoy first-hand experience of their product and destinations and, they in turn, report back to their colleagues who then impart this knowledge to their customers. A win, win situation! “Imagine our surprise and delight when Tamsyn, my colleague from Bodmin, and I were invited by Royal Caribbean Cruises to join their FAM mini-taster cruise to Bruges & Rotterdam. As we boarded the ship, it was hard to contain our excitement. Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas is an all singing, all dancing ship, with plenty to do for everybody. Quizzes and bingo ran throughout the day whilst films were played on the large outdoor movie screen. For the energetic amongst us, the rock climbing was terrific fun and we even had a go at ice skating and a game of mini golf – all at sea- amazing! Entertainment varied across the ship, from quiet piano bars to “West End” style shows. We thoroughly enjoyed the production of Grease and also watched ‘Strings’, a show on ice. The ice skaters were extremely talented and we were impressed with their skating ability whilst the ship was at sea! Everybody was soon clapping along to the songs and engaged in the daring stunts. There was also a karaoke bar, and the chance to record your own songs in the studio (as good as we think our singing is, we didn’t get around to trying this one out!) Independence of the Seas caters for families and couples alike. On deck 14 we found a lovely bar with panoramic views of the whole ship and sea scape – just beautiful. The ‘Promenade’ on board the ship has plenty of shops, food stops, bars and even an old vintage car. Throughout the Page 3 Answer: It is actually Royal Caribbean’s cruise ship, “Harmony of the Seas”.

cruise they put on themed street parties where people joined in with the entertainment, the atmosphere was electric and such fun! There was food available 24 hours a day, with a wide selection of dishes from all over the world. A great way to try food you wouldn’t normally opt for! Our cruise allowed us to take a day trip to Bruges. The city was beautiful, typical buildings, wonderful scenery, plenty of shops and many bikes and horse drawn carriages. It was lovely and small, but still had more than 70 chocolate shops, 40 bridges over the canals and every building looked different. The next day we found ourselves with a

quick stop in Rotterdam, which will appeal to people who love architecture – here we managed to see the modern market hall and famous cubed houses. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed this cruise, but the biggest plus for this ship is its crew and their high level of service. There was nothing they wouldn’t do to make our cruise more enjoyable and were extremely friendly and welcoming. At no point did we feel the ship was too big or overwhelming, and there is plenty to do all the time – you can do as much or as little as you like!” Rebecca Tuck – Travel Consultant, Kingsbridge

• Make a reservation for ‘Giovanis’ restaurant – taste the amazing flavours of Italy. The food is delicious and you can order as much as you like! • Have a cocktail in the Schooners Bar – our personal favourite. • The live production shows just can’t be missed! • Wander down the ‘Promenade’ - make sure you give yourself plenty of time to stop in every shop/ bar and cafe. • Give the Flow-Rider a go, a surfing simulator.

Complimentary hot beverages are served 24 hours a day in the foyer from a selfservice machine. The ship also has a small gym and Sauna. Cabins are over three decks, the top two offer French Balconies which are of a good size and simply furnished, all have a separate bath and shower with amenities provided. Cabins on the lower deck are a similar layout but have half height non-opening windows. The dining is on a full board basis and the food served was to a high standard with a wide variety of choices, special dietary requests are well met. The itineraries offered vary with the seasons and cover the main river areas of the Rhine, Danube and Maine. In 2012 I travelled to India to visit the cities of the Golden Triangle and Amritsar, they say it should be on everyone’s bucket list and I wholeheartedly agree. Old Delhi is an experience that everyone should take by local tuk tuk, the drivers are a font of knowledge and the narrow streets are famous, look at the wires above the streets – it’s like a ball of wool that’s come apart. The Medieval city of Agra is home to the magnificent Taj Mahal. A must is to see this with the Blue Moon at night and also at sunrise where the colour difference is astonishing. From here we travelled to Jaipur, “The Pink City” and saw the Palace of Winds with its 1,043 windows, built for the royal ladies to watch what was going on in the streets and for the return of their battle weary husbands, without being observed themselves. The Amber Fort, 130m high in the Arevalli Hills is reached by colourfully painted elephants or truck. It transports you back to the glory days of the Mughals, as the guides relay the lives of this period it makes you realise how class played a huge part in those times. Although this is now abolished the system still exists in some forms today. A train journey took us to Amritsar, the spiritual centre of Sikh religion and the glorious Golden Temple sitting majestically in a rectangular pool of water, the golden colour dazzles and should be seen by day and night. Goosebumps ran up and down my body at the Palki ceremony of the holy book. This temple can feed 150 thousand worshippers of every faith daily, you can even get involved with washing the dishes; every pair of hands is greatly appreciated! If you are inspired, then go to India and you will find it is a diverse, colourful, cultural country that leaves your life enriched and humbled at the same time. Debbie Rundle – Manager, Newquay

was lucky enough to be able to experience what Sandals and Beaches have to offer on the beautiful Caribbean Island of Jamaica! Jamaica is the home of Bob Marley and has a very relaxed vibe. Sandals is the world’s leading all-inclusive resorts tour operator and has so many quality inclusions. I visited Jamaica in mid-December so the weather was hot and humid, even at night the temperature was around 20 degrees. Sandals and Beaches have so many beautiful hotels to choose from in Jamaica, with a range of different styles of rooms there really is something for everyone! The sandals product caters for adults only and Beaches are family friendly resorts, which include ‘Sesame Street’ characters interacting with children around the complex. The rooms that you can choose to stay in vary from Caribbean deluxe doubles or luxury club level rooms, right up to Beachfront Walkout Butler Junior Suites! These styles of rooms include your very own butler to look after you throughout your stay. It would be hard to pick my favourite hotel on Jamaica but the two I enjoyed the most were Sandals Negril and the Sandals Royal Caribbean. The Negril because their rooms were really modern and had beautiful views of the gorgeous beach (where I enjoyed breakfast in my hotel room one morning) and the Royal Caribbean as this resort has it’s very own private island which has a Thai restaurant on it. 16

You don’t go hungry on a Sandals holiday! All resorts are all-inclusive so I made sure I made the most of it! The food is really yummy and you have a variety of restaurants in all hotels. These restaurants include International, Pizzeria, Caribbean and Italian cuisine. Drinks are obviously included and the resorts stock all major brands, you have plenty of lush cocktails to try, including rum cocktails made with Jamaican rum from the Appleton Estate. There are so many activities that you can do whilst visiting Jamaica. I visited YS Falls, this is a nature-based attraction offering the opportunity to experience the beauty of the untouched, unspoiled magnificence of the waterfalls on the South Coast of Jamaica. With seven waterfalls, several of

which cascade into natural pools and lush gardens, this is an opportunity to experience a one-of-a-kind wonder. You can also enjoy the exhilarating canopy rides available at YS Falls, where you glide from the top of the falls across the forest to its base. These aren’t the only waterfalls in Jamaica and on my next visit I intend to visit the Dunn’s River Falls. This is one of Jamaica’s most magnificent natural treasures, a 600 foot waterfall, one of the few in the world that empties directly into the sea. You can soak in lagoons filled with pure waters cascading from high in the mountains above Ocho Rios. Yes, I will definitely be returning to Jamaica. Megan Beland – Travel Consultant, Falmouth/Hayle

U nwin d & CRUI S E L ast December I was lucky enough to experience a FAM cruise courtesy of Saga on board MS Saga Sapphire. I joined the ship on the second week of her cruise at Gran Canaria with Agadir, Casablanca and El Ferrol in Spain still to look forward to. The ship can take 720 passengers and all of the cabins are extremely spacious, Sapphire is the biggest of all the ships that I have visited with a full bathroom. My cabin had a picture window although some had portholes and balconies. 24 hour room service is available to all cabins as well as little extras, like a bath robe and a daily fruit basket. The staff on board can’t do enough for you and after speaking to several customers, who have travelled several times with the company, they all said that the staff are wonderful and will do anything to help. There are several bars and restaurants on board, so plenty of choice to suit everyone. The food was absolutely amazing and the Chef on board actually lives in Camborne!! I had a tour of the galley and the bridge as part of my ‘familiarisation cruise’ but the same was offered to all guests as well. The Chef held a cake decorating competition for us on one of the days at sea which was really good fun. I also had the opportunity to have an afternoon in the Spa and was offered a treatment of my choice, what a treat! The excursions were very enjoyable and well organized. At Agadir I watched a cultural show which was fascinating. The next excursion was a trip to the city of Casablanca which again was very informative. 18

My final excursion was to El Ferrol in Spain where I saw a nativity within the church and then explored this very pretty little town. All excursions are bookable to all passengers before they travel or when they are on board and a full excursion booklet is given to everyone. Should you prefer to stay on board there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained; from crosswords to learning to play a musical instrument, they also had a varied range of guest speakers from experts on gardening to historians. Evening entertainment is so important on board and Sapphire offers the Piano Lounge for a more relaxed evening to the full-on Show Lounge. You can even learn to dance – no partner required!

On the final night those that had chosen to learn to play an instrument or to sing in the choir performed a concert for everyone which was very much enjoyed by all. The cruise offered very good value for money and many customers enjoyed a door to door transfer as well. In my opinion a successful product and much loved by all. isiting the Iguazu Falls, on the border between Argentina and Brazil, was the high-light of our holiday. We stayed two nights at the Sheraton International Hotel where we caught our first glimpse of the Falls from the hotel reception! We up-graded to a Falls View Room and were lucky enough to be allocated a third floor room and could have spent the whole time in our room transfixed by the view and sound! Dining one night at the Sheraton is a must. The set threecourse meal including wine was the best value at less than £25 per person. If staying two nights at the Sheraton make the most of your last day and book a late flight out. Check-out is 10am but you can store your luggage, enjoy free use of the hotel’s facilities, including pool, showers, towel, hairdryer, cosmetics and WiFi. Taking the advice of the local guide we enjoyed a siesta before acclimatizing ourselves with a 500 metre walk to the train station and travelling to the start of the trail to Devil’s Throat. Our afternoon visit was stupendous as the rainbows were dancing in and out of the waterfalls and the soaking from the spray dried rapidly in 30° heat as we walked back, gazing down at the alligators on the rocks below and turtles taking air on the walkway supports. At 8am the following morning our guide arrived to take us across the border bridge. On the Argentinian side we simply passed our passports through the vehicle window but at the Brazilian check-in we alighted and queued for our passports to be stamped. Once in the National Park we boarded an 20

open sided bus and travelled through the jungle to the start of the 1km viewing walkways. Only take drinking water and not food as the coatis and raccoons soon smell food and are happy to plunder your backpack! A morning visit is ideal as the sun is in the perfect position to view all 275 waterfalls in glorious panorama. Be warned there are a lot of steps although the majority are downhill and are well built with yellow edge and handrails. At the lowest level it is worth getting soaked in the spray of the upper falls and stand above the drop of the lower! The bonus is you don’t have to walk back to the bus but travel via a lift. The start of the lower trail is only 5 metres from the hotel garden and goes via a café serving Subway food. Although the morning light afforded fewer rainbows it was fascinating watching the intrepid “go-in” boats race into the full spray at the plunge pool of the Falls. Mr & Mrs A from Newquay

M Y L I F E i n T rav el We thought you would like a little insight into a travel agents life so we asked our staff a few questions Do you remember the first booking you made? Yes, I had 2 adults and 2 children in a motorhome travelling around Australia and New Zealand – it was a fantastic first booking. What’s the most memorable booking you’ve ever made and why? I love the bookings where you can get your teeth into the enquiries and learn about new destinations. A recent booking was a really lovely couple who worked so hard to save up for their Honeymoon and decided on a trip around New Zealand and Australia. Another would be a couple who were travelling around the USA starting in Los Angeles, Monterey, San Francisco, Yosemite National Park, Las Vegas then New York and Florida. I feel these itineraries gave me such enjoyment to put together and the experience the clients have is next to none. What’s been your favourite familiarisation trip and why was it so good? There have been a few including Florida and Vietnam but my favourite has to be Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans as I am a massive Elvis fan. This was an incredible trip for me and also quite rare because we actually stayed in the hotels that were on the tour rather than having to make separate hotel visits. The best part, however, was singing (however badly) an Elvis song at Studio B! We met and had a private music session with Johnny Cash’s Granddaughter and a trip around Graceland. If that wasn’t enough, we also enjoyed an extra special concert in Nashville. Mind blowing! Who is your favourite customer? We have so many loyal and friendly customers, but I have one family who I have been booking holidays for since the children were tiny and they travel about 3/4 times a year. We are extremely lucky to have such a loyal customer base and everyone is our favourite client in their own way. What’s the best gift you’ve ever been given by a customer and what did you do to earn it? I had a couple who went on a USA road trip to visit family and, in general conversation, I mentioned a particular chocolate only available in Nashville. Unbelievably on their return they had stopped off in Nashville and bought me a selection of those chocolates - I was so delighted. What has been the most embarrassing moment in your career in travel? When I first started in travel, over 10 years ago, a client came in and asked for brochures on the French Polynesia. Scratching my head I asked a colleague who picked up the Australia brochure and gave it to the client and in my naivety I remarked, “I thought the French Polynesia was in FRANCE!” Queue red faces all around, however, I am still here 10 years later. If you could be a celebrity for a day, who would you be and why? I love movies and especially super heroes so I would be Scarlett Johnson as Black Widow and spend the whole day in a room with Captain America and Iron Man (not a bad life). Where would you like your career to be in 10 years’ time? I love what I do so it will most certainly be in travel but I would still hope it is with Newell’s TRAVEL. What advice would you give to somebody thinking about a career as a travel agent? If you have a passion for travel and enjoy making people smile then the travel industry is perfect. There are so many rewards and opportunities to visit places I would never have dreamt of. I am lucky and happy to be doing what I am doing and if you have the passion and commitment the rewards are there for you. Carley Gower, Helston branch manager

Do you remember the first booking you made? I’ve worked for Newell’s TRAVEL for 11 years so my recollection is a little hazy! I think my first booking was one to Mallorca for a little family. I just remember being thrilled that someone had booked! What’s the most memorable booking you’ve ever made and why? My most memorable booking was a lovely couple who spent approximately £35,000! I booked a few different tours for them as well as staying with their family. I not only learned a lot about the various tours and areas, but kept in touch with them whilst they were on their travels and heard all their stories. They booked other holidays with me afterwards and stayed in touch. What’s been your favourite familiarisation trip and why was it so good? My favourite FAM trip was probably a cruise on the Van Gogh to the Canaries. I loved it because, not only did I see so many new places, but I met some wonderful people and it was the first time I’d hosted a cocktail party and sat at the Captain’s table!! I had a wonderful time!! Who is your favourite customer? I can’t name a favourite customer.... we have so many wonderful customers! Lots have become friends and many just come in to say “hello” between bookings. I think we are so lucky to work in such a wonderful atmosphere. What’s the best gift you’ve ever been given by a customer and what did you do to earn it? The more memorable gift was when one of our customers went to visit his son in Japan and he sent us (by post) the most beautiful huge box of individually wrapped speciality sweet treats. They were really pretty and tasted delicious. What has been the most embarrassing moment in your career in travel? I told someone they were booking a ‘Tinkle and Curtsey’ holiday instead of ‘Tinsel and Turkey’ and another was when I had to take a group of people on a tour of the caves in Mallorca. Never having visited them before, I said “firstly we all turn to the right...” and it was just a big rock and we all went round in a circle!! So I quickly followed that with “and now we turn to the left!!” If you could be a celebrity for a day, who would you be and why? I would like to be someone like Jacques Cousteau and be able to go to the bottom of the deepest seas and see all the strange creatures that live there! Where would you like your career to be in 10 years’ time? In 10 years’ time I will probably be retired.... but you never know, I might still be pottering around doing some part time work!! I think by then I would be experienced enough to just go and try out all the different cabins on the various cruise ships on all their different cruises - just for research purposes for the company, of course!! What advice would you give to somebody thinking about a career as a travel agent? DO IT!! The world is such an amazing place and to learn about it, whilst meeting lovely people, is a real privilege. You also get the chance to see some of it for free too!! Jules Amis – Assistant Manager, Saltash 23
