THE ROVER
Or The Banish’d Cavaliers A darkly comic Restoration comedy by Aphra Behn Lust and violence intermingle in the streets of 17th century Naples as a carnival takes over the city.
Creative Team
Led through an endless string of masquerades and parties, a motley group of exiled English cavaliers dive head first into the steamy underbelly of the festival. As these ‘Rovers’ gradually descend into a hedonistic rampage it is up to three women: a nun, a noblewoman and a courtesan, to save their lovers from themselves.
Performances
In a world where almost anything is for sale, the cavaliers must learn that it can be dangerous to leave your debts unpaid... One of the first truly successful female playwrights Aphra Behn, former spy to Charles II, wrote The Rover in 1677 for the regenerated world of London theatre. This dark Restoration comedy offers an unusually frank account of the true cost of aristocratic indulgence, whilst all the time maintaining a deliciously cruel sense of humour. Join Pell Mell Theatre Company in this brand new production as they recreate the music, mayhem and madness of an Italian Carnival.
