New Detroit's 2023 Year in Review

Page 1

2023 In Review New Detroit is a diverse coalition of 50 nonprofit, corporate, and civic leaders working to achieve racial understanding and racial equity in Metropolitan Detroit. We were formed in response to civil unrest in 1967 to identify what went wrong, what needed to change, and how to make that change happen. Today, NDI moves toward its mission by providing thought leadership, advocating for policy change, and offering programs and services to catalyze change through a collective action model.

Race Equity Conference Our second annual, Just Lead: Advancing Racial Equity conference brought together 220 participants representing a cross section of leadership and viewpoints. The conference included an opening plenary on the Business Case for DEI and Racial Equity; a lunchtime chat with Nikole Hannah-Jones; a panel on Understanding our History to Create a Racially Equitable Future, interactive workshops such as White Allyship with David Campt, and a closing plenary with civic leaders on Equity in Action. Watch a reel of images from the conference here and view the digital program book here. Watch interviews with conference participants here to see what they have to say about DEI and racial equity.

Just Institute To change policies and systems, we must first change hearts and minds. New Detroit's Just Institute provides a comprehensive suite of industry specific certificated trainings and customized consulting. Trainings provide interactive pedagogical learning and personalized action plans to provide participants tools and strategies to create racially equitable policies and practices grounded in deep understanding of racialized systems. Consulting services may be offered in conjunction with training or as a standalone service. In 2023 The Just Institute served a total of 140 people in the hospitality industry through Just Place™ (Detroit Parks Coalition), the healthcare industry through Just Care™ (customized programs for Authority Health and on opioid use disorders--externally evaluated by Johns Hopkins), and emerging and seasoned leaders across industries and sectors through Just Lead (including our signature Leadership Series on R.A.C.E. and our Transformational Framework process).
