RALPH FREEMAN

Ralph Freeman is known for paintings and mixed media reliefs inspired by his subconscious response to the natural and built environment. He grounds his work first and foremost in drawing, expressing his ideas through line and composition before exploring them in other materials. Working with the fluidity and happenstance of watercolour, the discipline of oil paint, and the materiality of constructed surfaces, he combines the characteristics of different mediums in order to express the abstract within the spaces and forms around him. As well as being an artist, Ralph is a jazz composer and performer who brings

harmony, rhythm, structure and a degree of improvisation to both his art and his music, often taking titles for his artworks from his jazz compositions, and titles for his jazz compositions from his artwork. Ralph Freeman was born in London and studied at St Martin’s and Harrow Schools of Art. He worked as a graphic designer and musician in London and Europe before committing full time to painting in 1983. He continues to compose and perform as a jazz pianist, and in 1998 he founded St Ives Jazz Club. He has held solo shows at Tate St Ives, and the Freud Museum, and has lectured at University College Falmouth, Central St Martin’s London, and Bournemouth College of Art. He exhibits in the UK, Europe and the USA.
