A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRS _____________________________

W

elcome to the amazing Ralph and Ellen Caples Historic home on the Bay!

Jeff and I had tried for many years to get this lovely home to use as a Designers Showhouse… to no avail! It was being used as offices and classrooms for the professors at New College… Until the interior became unhealthy with mold deterioration and the building was closed. New College was awarded a grant to refurbish the interior as well as the windows and the exterior front balcony with the guidance of Hall-Darling Architects who specialize in Historic Preservation. Timing is everything…. We were able to meet with the New College Foundation and explain how doing a Designer Showhouse to raise money for their new Historic Preservation Fund would make the public aware of the importance of saving and preserving these historic structures! We would like to thank the designers who put their creative juices to great use…. This would not happen without you! Then there are the behind the scenes people who donate their time and talent to make this all come together, this includes docents, ticket sellers, industry partners and sponsors. We need each and every one of you for this project to happen! A special thanks to Alice Rothbauer from the New College Foundation who met with us for weeks to make this event go smoothly. Jeff and I hope you enjoy the truly creative… decorated rooms by our talented Sarasota and Tampa Designers!

HISTORY OF

THE FORMER ESTATE OF KEY FIGURES IN SARASOTA HISTORY

The Historic Ralph and Ellen Caples Mansion was constructed in 1921 by architect Alfred Clas. This four-bedroom, four-bathroom mansion was built in the Mediterranean Revival style, characterized by features such as large, symmetrical facades, red clay roof tiles, wrought iron decorative elements, outdoor living spaces, and ornate archways. Mediterranean Revival style is also evident in some of Sarasota’s most prominent buildings, including the Sarasota County Courthouse and Ca’d’zan, the former estate of circus impresario John Ringling. Ralph and Ellen Caples arrived in Sarasota in 1899. Although it was only a village of 200 people at the time, they were among the first who saw the city’s growth potential. A prominent businessman and developer, Mr. Caples was instrumental in bringing the railroad to the Sarasota area in 1903. Reaction to the railroad extension was immediate-- the town began to grow and real estate prices began to rise. As a result, Sarasota began to develop an identity as a winter tourist haven. Mr. Caples is also credited with persuading the Ringlings to make Sarasota the winter home of their famed circus-- another major contribution to the city. Together, the Caples and the Ringlings were arguably the most important promoters and developers of the city of Sarasota, Florida in the first quarter of the 20th century. Reflecting its historical significance, the Caples mansion is listed on The National Register of Historic Places as part of the Caples’-Ringlings’ Estates Historic District. The mansion was gifted to New College in 1971 by Mrs. Ellen Caples, who was also an involved figure in local charities and service clubs and a longtime supporter of New College.

_______________________________ 2 - DINING ROOM In the heart of this 1920s-inspired dining room, opulence and elegance intertwine, creating a setting that transports you to the golden age of glamour. As you enter, your eyes are drawn to the gallery wall adorned with vintage art, from Keffie Lancaster’s personal collection which she has curated over the years from her world travels. The dining table, a masterpiece, is set for six of Sarasota's most prominent guests. The finest Waterford crystal sparkles in the ambient light, casting prismatic reflections across the room. The tableware, a symphony of delicate patterns and intricate designs, also collected over the years by Keffie and her mother Bonnie, promising a dining experience that transcends mere sustenance. Sequined drapery and side panels frame the Gothic-arched windows, adding a touch of mystique and glamour to the room. In this meticulously recreated dining room, time stands still, allowing you to savor the essence of an era that embraced luxury and refinement. The room becomes a portal to a world where elegance was not just a choice but a way of life—a celebration of the artistry and sophistication that defined the era. Lancaster Interior Design is privileged to participate in this extraordinary showcase home Our creative designs are a tribute to Bonnie Lancaster, displaying her love of all things beautiful. Caples HISTORIC TOUR Designer Showcase _______________________________ 8 - SITTING ROOM Inspired by Ralph and Ellen Caples's charisma and visionary foresight to transform and celebrate Sarasota’s culture and beauty, we chose a rich color palette, warm textures, and sophisticated patterns. We envisioned a fluid interpretation of the space where each guest could feel their creativity evoke deeper emotion. Moved by the profound quote from poet Yung Pueblo, “Do the universe a favor, don't hide your magic,” the mural expresses our desire to break away from the ordinary, live authentically, and explore our own imagination. _______________________________ 9 - MASTER BEDROOM A nod to the “Old Florida Style”, Margaret Rohr of Dalton Reed Interiors reimagines a bedroom by using color, a mix of prints, Bamboo inspired furniture and a lacquered piece. Vintage chairs were reupholstered with performance fabrics. All the bedding and window treatments were custom made. Vintage Drexel Heri-tage dresser, sourced by Margaret, was lacquered and new acrylic legs added. Hand painted Italian tole lamp and a Mccoy pottery collection help bring the vison alive. All the above is grounded on a sisal area rug.

_______________________________ 11 - NORTH BEDROOM & ADJOINING BATH LOUNGE: SPEAKEASY VIBE Our Vintage Modern Lounge evokes an atmosphere of timeless elegance and contemporary allure. This spare bedroom turned luxury lounge is immersed in deep, moody hues that stir the senses and offer refined comfort. The room’s design features a curated selection of textures, including cozy ivory upholstery, supple camel leather, and the inviting presence of antique brass and mirrored glass. The incorporation of natural elements adds grounding warmth. Sleek lighting fixtures introduce a modern touch, while eclectic art and decor pieces infuse personality and intrigue. The harmonious fusion of vintage and modern aesthetics will captivate visitors and create an appreciation for the era of the home. ADJOINING BATH: RETRO CHARM We were inspired by the deep blue hues of the finishes in the bathroom just up the steps, so we created a complementary design to let the vintage elements shine. A softer wall paint palette emphasizes the historic floor tiles and moody blue sink and tub. Complementary printed fabrics marry well with the tones and add personality to the space. Pops of antique brass create balance and elegant texture.

Most inspired by old boats, barns, farms and villages, remnants of a world that seems to be disappearing, she prefers painting in plein air and being present with her subjects, of which she has many. “Whether painting in plein air or in the studio, I try to capture the essence of my subjects to express a moment or sense of place,” says Cundiff. “I consider myself to be a ‘shape painter,’ and am drawn to abstract shapes between the light and shadow. I look at a scene as an abstract arrangement of shapes rather than identifying what I see.”
