f you were a child of the 1980s, chances are songs like Karma Chameleon, Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, I’ll Tumble For Ya and It’s A Miracle featured heavily in your musical upbringing. Well, the architects of those songs Culture Club - led by the gloriously androgynous front man Boy George - will be heading to Hope Estate to headline a show that will also feature some of the best Aussie 80s exports. Guitarist Roy Hay told Newcastle Weekly that, after a successful Oz

tour earlier this year, the decision to return was an easy one to make. “It’s funny, you don’t go somewhere for 15 years and your back twice in a year,” he said. “Our promoter said ‘why don’t you blokes come back and play some wineries’ and we thought that was a brilliant idea." Roy added that while punters could expect a 25+ song set off all the hits, he said there would be more than a few surprises thrown in. “Maybe George might want to

throw a bit more reggae in one night or, you know we’ve been losing great artists at an alarming rate in 2016, so there might be a few little tributes planned for some of those guys as well.” After hitting the stratosphere with their first album Kissing To Be Clever, Culture Club were at the forefront of 80s pop – thanks to a beguiling mix of pop, rock, reggae, Motown, northern soul and, of course Boy George’s larger than life persona.
