Joyful and Nurturing Community

Dear Horizons at NCCS Friends and Family, Each summer we choose a theme to guide and unite us across our six weeks together. This summer’s theme, Purpose, was particularly meaningful for all of us. The theme was inspired by our former Academic Director, Lavone Roberson, who passed away last October. Lavone started each day by reflecting on her own unique purpose, and that ritual helped her to carry on, even during very challenging times. This practice inspired her to help children to discover their purpose through her children’s book, Nia Means Purpose. As we faced our first summer since her loss, it was only natural that we let her guide and inspire us through a focus on purpose. For our students, our focus on purpose meant creating opportunities for them to reflect on who they are, who they want to be, and the difference they want to make at Horizons, in their schools and communities, and in the world. For staff, the theme inspired daily reflection on the “why” of everything we do at Horizons and the rigor to articulate that with each other and with our students. Our eighth graders completed purpose projects in which they researched elements of the program and solicited feedback and recommendations from their peers that will help us ensure that we continue to meet their changing needs. In our Musical Revue, our students’ performances reflected their passion for instilling kindness into the world and for being a source of support and encouragement for each other. These young people are our next generation of leaders and I can tell you, with confidence, we are in very good hands. In our Junior Program art classes, our students made ceramic puzzle piece necklaces to convey that each of us is an important part of the Horizons puzzle. That includes all of you. In just a few short weeks, Horizons at NCCS will enter its 60th year! During those six decades you have helped us to expand our reach and broaden and deepen our programming; in turn, this has provided access to support and resources that have propelled many thousands of young people to realize their enormous potential.

With gratitude,

Nancy von Euler Executive Director

Thank you for making Horizons at NCCS an important part of your unique purpose.

Purpose at Work The summer program theme of “Purpose” served as a springboard for reflection for students and staff, creating a daily opportunity to consider the “why” that guides us in everything that we do. Every part of a student’s day at Horizons is intentional, from the morning bus greeting to their swim instruction. Let’s take a deeper dive into…

Swimming 64%

45%

of Black/African American children and of Hispanic/Latino children have little to no swimming ability, putting them at higher risk of drowning and depriving them of opportunities to safely enjoy water-based activities. Swimming

instruction is a hallmark of our summer program and students learn essential water safety skills, including survival floating, resting strokes, and being prepared for rip currents. Younger students in kindergarten through grade five participate in instructional swim on campus one to two times a week, and all students look forward to recreational swim time in the afternoon in donated neighborhood pools.

horizonskids.org

If a caregiver does not know how to swim, there is only a 19% chance that a child in their household will learn to swim. Horizons provides adult swim classes during the summer that are run by volunteer instructors and lifeguards, giving our caregivers an opportunity to learn a new skill and share in their children’s newfound appreciation of the water.

Senior Program Olympics Each summer, Senior Program students come together in teams throughout the six weeks to prepare to compete in an end-of-summer Olympics event. They brainstorm a team name — one often related to our summer theme — a team costume, and a choreographed routine to be performed during the Opening Ceremony. The Opening Ceremony begins with a silent procession of the teams and Junior Program students and staff, led by a torch bearer and a parade of flags from countries around the globe. Before the day of competition begins in the pool and out on the fields, students exercise their own team-building skills, creativity, and risk-taking together. They realize after all the competition and judging is over that it doesn’t

matter if their team takes the gold, silver, or bronze — they grow as individuals throughout the journey, and that is the prize they take away.

A Life of Purpose and Impact Honoring the Dedication and Life of Tim Rivlin This past August, the Horizons at NCCS community suffered another huge loss as Tim Rivlin, the summer Senior Program Director, who was entering his forty-fifth year with the program, passed away after a brief illness. Tim was a highly valued board member who had served in that capacity since 2004. He was a dedicated educator who had a 34-year career teaching government, economics, and history at Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx, New York. There has been an outpouring of love and gratitude from the many current and former students whose lives he touched. He was well known amongst staff and students for his delightfully corny sense of humor and his ability to perfectly deliver a joke at the right moment. Tim was part of the fabric of Horizons, and he cherished special events and traditions, such as the Senior Program Olympics. He took great pride in bearing the torch alongside an honored recent graduate of the program. He also looked forward each summer to his big reveal of the Broadway show that had been selected for the eighthand ninth-grade students to experience. Tim will remain in all of our hearts and minds as we carry on these traditions with purpose and intent. We are beyond grateful for the many gifts Tim bestowed on everyone in the Horizons community.

Leadership Celebration Recognizing Commitment and Years of Service

A tribute was given to Ginny Pracilio, Horizons Office and Development Manager, who celebrated her 20-year milestone anniversary this past September. Aaron Cooper, the Head of School at New Canaan Country School, said, “Ginny is a true connector who brings people together with her humor, her dedication, and her relationships. The happiest time of year for Ginny is in the summer when the kids arrive.” Together, Amy Stevens, who serves on the Horizons Board of Governors, and Annie Cohen, a long-time Horizons supporter, each shared memories that highlighted Ginny’s unwavering dedication to the program over the last 20 years, her constant positivity, and her role as the glue that has kept the Horizons office running. Horizons is grateful for the many contributions Ginny has made over these two decades.

The Horizons Board Chair, Tiffany Van Elslander, announced the establishment of the Tim Rivlin Excellence in Teaching Award. This annual award in his honor will be given to a lead teacher in the summer program who has taught with the program for a minimum of three years and demonstrates a passion for educational equity, dedication to their students, creative curriculum development, and mentorship amongst colleagues. We will continue to acknowledge the contributions of the next generation of educators in Tim’s honor.

Top: Ginny was joined by two of her three children, Michael and Kimmy Pracilio, who are Horizons alumni. Left: Horizons Executive Director Nancy von Euler, Tiffany Van Elslander, Ginny Pracilio, Annie Cohen, Amy Stevens, and Aaron Cooper. Right: Nancy von Euler, Hunter Geraghty, Irene Rivlin, and Elizabeth Guillen, who is an alumna, a lead teacher at Horizons, and serves on the Horizons Board of Directors.

At the annual Leadership Celebration on October 19, the Horizons Board of Directors, Board of Governors, and special guests gathered to hear program updates, recognize a 20-year staff milestone anniversary, and honor the commitment and life of our Senior Program Director, Tim Rivlin.
