A brief report on Chamber Activities from the President/CEO Every new year is a re-birth of sorts. We make resolutions, and sometimes we keep them. We make resolutions we may not be able to keep, but if we fixed everything about ourselves in one year, what good would the next new year be? The New Bedford Area Chamber is no different from the rest of us as individuals. The Chamber also makes resolutions, and all we resolve is designed to make the member experience better and better every day and to place the needs of the member at the core of what we do.

The awards were presented on November 12, 2015 at the Chamber’s 129th Annual Meeting & Business Luncheon at Century House in Acushnet. These businesses, through their investment, have generated economic growth, helped positively impact schools and provided outstanding service throughout the Greater New Bedford Area. The Economic impact awards were presented to four businesses, Joseph Abboud Manufacturing Corporation, HTP (Heat Transfer Products), SouthCoast Behavioral Health and LaFrance Hospitality. Since January 2014 Joseph Abboud Manufacturing Corp. activated 59,000 square feet of underutilized mill space which created 240 new jobs. This new investment in the Upper Harbor district of New Bedford cost approximately $9 million. HTP (Heat Transfer Products): HTP is a recognized innovation leader in the development, manufacturing and distribution of space and water heating products. They recently invested $2.9 million to acquire and refurbish a vacant building in the New Bedford Business Park This expansion retained 178 employees, 69 whom are New Bedford residents, and will create 44 new jobs. SouthCoast Behavioral Health: SouthCoast Behavioral Health is a new 120 bed in-patient facility located in Dartmouth provides improved mental health services including both psychiatric and substance abuse issues. The Outstanding Service awards was presented to Tracey Medeiros of BankFive. Tracey Medeiros is the Banking Officer – Branch Manager at BankFive located in Fairhaven. In her four year career with BankFive, Tracey’s branch ranked #1 in increased customer deposit growth and she has been promoted three times. Tracey is a vivacious member of the Ambassadors Council for the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce. She also sits on the board of the Fairhaven Business Association, is the current Treasurer of the Fairhaven Rotary Club, and has served as President of the Polish Women’s Business Professional Club. She is actively involved in the community and donates her time to the Teach BankFive Literacy Program at Millicent Library as well as educates students at Fairhaven High about finance and banking.

At the Young People’s Concert on February 29, 2016, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra will perform the World Premiere of Adaptations in Motion, where over 4,000 student composers, using various compositional techniques, skillfully create musical adaptations that replicate through music the gradual progression of ancient species who moved from swimming and gliding in water to moving, walking or running on land. The concert will also feature scientific illustrations completed by the students, as well as student video interviews and footage collected from our yearlong exploration.

Many factors have and are contributing to this new frontier such as The Great Recession and ever-changing industry and technology landscapes not to mention the difference in the timelines of how quickly things change today and our present educational models.

This is very helpful especially for youth because many employers are apprehensive about the job readiness of our less experienced workforce. Our Career Center (also operated by New Directions) offers training in Microsoft Office, Career Readiness 101, and other types of training that have recognized credentials. This increases the marketability of the labor force participating in these trainings and their value overall to the employers. The GNBWIB and its partners will continue

to follow WIOA’s guidelines and insist that all training/educational programs and courses lead to marketable skill sets that have been validated by the regional employers of our area. The GNBWIB is focused on creating a workforce system, not only managing workforce programs. The primary difference is a system supports the “collective impact” of many stakeholders coming together and aligning their strategies and resources to reach greater outcomes and objectives. In this manner, a more sustainable workforce can be developed indefinitely verses a series of programs that will lead to limited training but has less impact on the region and its economy.
