mission to serve the interests of member businesses while advocating business advancement, economic growth and job creation for the benefit of New Bedford and the SouthCoast. Our thirty member board is elected from and by the members of the Chamber and they meet regularly to address policies and issues of concern. In other news, the Chamber is continuing its efforts around tourism and destination marketing. We are currently in the process of hiring a full-time tourism marketing coordinator to support the Convention & Visitor Bureau (CVB). The Chamber and Southeastern Massachusetts CVB are also conducting an RFP process to select an advertising agency to assist with the development and execution of a comprehensive marketing plan for the region. Our goal is to attract more visitors and increase the economic impact of tourism to the area. In the public policy area, we are pleased with the recent vote by the New Bedford City Council to reduce the commercial tax rate for local businesses. Although not the reduction that we had requested, the new rate represents continued progress in narrowing the gap between residential and businesses and provides some modest relief to the business community. Taxes will still go up for both residents and businesses, but the average business owner will see a much smaller increase. This is the third year that the council has voted to reduce the tax classification rate. In closing, I would like to thank you all for your continued support and commitment. A busy and exciting year is ahead of us in 2014!

The Greater New Bedford Connecting Activities Partnership The Greater New Bedford Connecting Activities Partnership is proud to announce that it will be bringing the very successful CHOICES Dropout Prevention Workshop back into the New Bedford Public School System this up-coming spring. Thanks to a $50,000 grant received from the UPS Foundation last July, CHOICES Executive Director Leo Muller was able to help fund this year’s program in the New Bedford community free of charge. “CHOICES is an essential message for teens at a pivotal point in their lives. When it is delivered by committed business volunteers who are credible, positive adult role models, it becomes

very real to those teens,” he explained. “The commitment that the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce has made to this initiative is exemplary, with service to more than 1,000 teens over a three-year period. We are honored to make the workshop available to them free of charge this school year due to a generous grant from the UPS Foundation. We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership with the Chamber to benefit teens throughout the New Bedford community.” This spring will mark the third straight year in which the GNBCAP has been able to bring this very successful program back into the New Bedford Public School System. In 2012, the program debuted at New Bedford High School and was presented to participating 9th grade students. Last spring, the workshop was delivered to 6th grade students at Roosevelt Middle School in New Bedford, and was met with high praise from school officials.

Saint Anne’s Hospital, a Steward Family Hospital in Fall River, MA, broke ground for the new Urgent Care Center at Riverside Landing, on Coggeshall Street in New Bedford. Scheduled to open in fall 2014, the new 10,000-square-foot urgent care center will provide walk-in outpatient care for the treatment of non-life-threatening illness or injuries when a patient’s primary care physician is not available, or when more expensive emergency room care is not required. “Urgent care centers provide a prompt and cost-effective alternative to emergency room visits for treatment of illnesses or injuries when a patient’s primary care physician is not available,” said John Jurczyk, FACHE, chief operating officer at Saint Anne’s Hospital. Some of the conditions that can be treated at an urgent care center include sore throats, ear

Located adjacent to exit 17 on Interstate 195 in a popular new complex also occupied by Market Basket and other retailers, the hospital’s new outpatient service will feature 12 private exam rooms, a diagnostic laboratory, and diagnostic imaging that includes all-digital X-ray, ultrasound, CT scan, and EKG services. It will be staffed by urgent care physicians and other clinicians associated with Hawthorn Medical Associates and Saint Anne’s Hospital. It is scheduled to be open seven days a week, 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. James Gularek, chief executive officer of Hawthorn Medical Associates, notes, “Urgent care does not replace primary care, and it is not a substitute for a hospital emergency room, but it does fill a special need.” For example, if a patient develops a routine illness or injury that requires care when the primary care physician’s office is closed, but is not serious enough to require a more expensive visit to the emergency room, “urgent care providers can help,” said Gularek. Urgent care services also are covered by most insurances. Architect for the project is Steffian Bradley Architects, Boston. The general contractor is Charles Construction Co., of North Andover, with project management by Dickinson Development Corp., of Quincy, and D.W. White, of Acushnet.
