The Ride (206 miles): From Battle Mountain, head south on SR 305 (Broad Street) 88 miles to Highway 50. Turn left on Highway 50 for 12.7 miles to the town of Austin. Great place to stop for lunch. Turn right on SR 376 S and go 20 miles to the little community of Kingston. Continue on 40 miles to Round Mountain where they’re still mining for gold. The route follows a one-way paved road past red sandstone peaks and features self-guided trails, picnic areas, and vista pull-outs. The Ride (44 miles): Follow West Charleston Boulevard until it turns into SR 159 near the outskirts of town, about 10 miles from The Strip. Follow SR 159 around the Red Rock Scenic Loop to Blue Diamond, 23 miles. A left on SR 160 will take you back to Las Vegas, 11 miles.

14 VAL L E Y OF F I RE S TATE PA R K This is Nevada’s oldest and largest state park, filled with petrified wood and unusual rock formations. The Ride (128 miles): Take Interstate 15 north from Las Vegas to SR 169 at Exit 93, 51 miles. Turn right onto SR 169 through Logandale and into the park via the Valley of Fire Road and back to I-15, 45 miles. I-15 south will take you the 32 miles back to Las Vegas. If you’re game for a side trip to Mesquite, head north on I-15 for 50 miles. With world-class golf courses and beautiful spas, it’s well worth the detour.

15 MO UNT C HARL E S TO N At 11,915 feet, Charleston Peak is the highest point in southern Nevada. When temperatures soar in Las Vegas, the mountain air will be a pleasant 20 to 25 degrees cooler. The Ride (87 miles): On US 95, head north from Las Vegas to Lee Canyon Road (SR 156), 30 miles. Follow Lee Canyon west up the mountain and turn left on Deer Creek Road (SR 158), 15 miles. Hoover Dam is the highest concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere, and the recently completed Mike O’Callaghan/Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge is the highest concrete-arch bridge in the world. The Ride (70 miles): Take I-15 south to Interstate 215 east. Travel east on I-215 for approximately 10 miles to the junction of I-215 and US 93/US 95. Take US Highway 93 south and continue about 20 miles to Boulder City. In Boulder City, take a left at the second stoplight in town (there are only two of them).
