B Another big notion? Our state’s insatiable quest for what’s next. Where do we go from here? I love that about Texas—and I happen to have some answers.

Big deals Go ahead. Throw every big cliché at us. We can take it — because most of them are true. We live and work and laugh and love in Texas, and I can confidently report that things really are bigger here. Houses, land, dreams, thoughts — you name it. Some eye-openers from our part of it: Just last year, Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty became the proud seller of the largest ranch in the United States of America within a single fence — the legendary W.T. Waggoner estate, at nearly 535,000 acres — listed with us for $725 million and marketed around the world. Also last year, around that same world, Sotheby’s International Realty affiliates achieved approximately $95 billion in sales volume — the highest in the history of the brand. (Maybe you heard that news when it broke on CNBC?) One is Plano. The city just minutes north of Dallas has become the bustling corporate headquarters to Pizza Hut, Frito-Lay, FedEx, Liberty Mutual Insurance and JCPenney. This summer, Toyota opens its cutting-edge North American headquarters there. JPMorgan Chase is coming, and Fannie Mae is, too. In fact, there is tremendous interest in North Texas from all over the globe, especially from such diverse places as Dubai, China and Germany. Drive a few more minutes outside of Dallas and Fort Worth and you will see cranes, contractors and construction equipment — building houses, restaurants, retail stores, office buildings and entire developments, where people are coming to live, work, shop and spend. It’s a big life here, with big ideas — which is precisely why we are bringing you B magazine. THE MISCONCEPTION OF QUALITY Try to capture it, and you can't. Try to contain it, and you won't. What does quality really mean? LEE CULLUM challenges you to define it

Have you ever seen a word as overused, underappreciated or drained of meaning as quality? We’ve had quality circles, quality control, quality of life and — the worst — quality time. We’ve also had elegant explorations of quality as a feature of character in such works as Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice,” with its glorious exhortation that begins, “The quality of mercy is not strained,” or The Man Without Qualities by Austrian novelist Robert Musil, a work of ambiguity, passivity and indecision in the face of World War I. But the word in its truest sense, that means the most to me, appears in this description by historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr. of Jacqueline Kennedy and the importance she had to her husband, the president: “More and more she embodied something of increasing value for him — a surcease from daily business, a standard of excellence, a symbol of privacy, a style of life.” This adds up to quality as something substantive not shallow, deep not superficial, significant not superfluous. To embrace this kind of quality is to reject the trivial and the trendy in favor of the true, though not necessarily of the lasting: Some moments can

We all know when we are in a place with soul—and we know

be evanescent yet illumine life forever because they are everlastingly lovely. Thomas Moore comes close to a high concept of quality in his book, Care of the Soul: A Guide for Cultivating Depth and Sacredness in Everyday Life. The quality of soulfulness, he writes, thrives on tradition, on the accumulation of experience over decades and even centuries. It reveals itself in art, and art reveals us to the world. “Art,” said the architecture critic Ada Louise Huxtable, “is the style of an age. Art never lies. It tells us exactly who we are.” Soulfulness can be found, Moore explains, in “a cultivation of ordinary things.” This to me is his most telling insight: that soul — the highest manifestation of quality — can be found while shopping when we gravitate to images already in our psyche: archetypal, perhaps, or dredged up from memories we thought were lost. The quality of soul, like mercy, is not strained. With surprising ease, it can reside in houses, restaurants, jewelry — heirloom or modern and probably not expensive — and people. We all know when we are in a place with soul and we know when we are not. We can feel the kindred spirit of a soulmate, or the possibility in a new friend who might become one, and we can sense the emptiness, the loneliness, of company that depletes us and drags us down. The search for quality, then, is not a quest for the best. It is neither a race nor a competition nor a measurement of worth. It does not yield its mystery to quantification nor its secrets to surveys. The science of analytics will struggle to uncover it, and always it eludes those who would capture and contain it. The search for quality, after all, is an adventure of the mind, a voyage of the heart into depths unknown because they are our own, never charted before in quite the same way. B

FACING IT Is he a portraitist who happened to be president — or a president who happens to paint? Decide for yourself with the new book and exhibit of George W. Bush’s portraits of American military veterans. In Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors, the former president pairs stories of veterans with his paintings of them, almost 70 in all. The focus is on “warriors,” as Bush calls them, who have served since September 11, 2001. Bush is giving his net proceeds from the project to the George W. Bush Presidential Center, whose Military Service Initiative specializes in veteran wellness, including traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress. The veterans’ portraits are an evolution of what started as a post-presidency hobby: first, portraits of Bush’s pets, then landscapes, then world leaders he had gotten to know. Some of his subjects? FAR BEYOND SOME SATIN AND STITCHING What Iris van Herpen uses in her work reads more like a run to the hardware store than haute couture: glass bubbles, clear silicone, iron filings, resin, polymers, magnets. The Dutch designer has spun all of that and more into clothes that set fashion editors’ heads to spinning — and writers scrambling to try and describe them. She is a pioneer of 3-D printing for dresses, and an artist whose wearable works have landed on Tilda Swinton, Björk and Beyoncé, and in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She calls it all New Couture — and the Dallas Museum of Art concurs. Beginning May 21, it reveals almost 50 of van Herpen’s astounding, confounding creations, made with everything from metal woven into a wispy gauze to the steely tines of an umbrella, cinched tight with leather edging to make a stunning, sculptural dress — and the furthest thing from today’s athleisure wear. “Iris an Herpen: Transforming Fashion,” May 21 through August 20, Dallas Museum of Art; dma.org —R.B. 16

ONE DALLAS MAN’S WET, WILD, 190-MPH WIN Nick Boulle is a little wound up — and not just because he works in the world of mainsprings, movements and crowns. The usually soft-spoken Boulle — he is in marketing and sales at de Boulle, his family’s tony jewelry stores in Dallas and Houston — has reason to be jumping for joy and spraying champagne: In February, he and three teammates co-drove an open-cockpit race car to a first-place finish in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. For the

sophisticated Speed Racer, who has raced all kinds of cars as an amateur and professional, winning the Prototype Challenge class of the prestigious endurance race was “a childhood dream come true.” But it wasn’t all hearts and flowers: Rain pounded down for much of the race’s 24 nonstop hours, right into the car. “They were easily some of the most treacherous conditions I’ve competed in,” says the 27-year-old grad of SMU’s Cox School of Business. Boulle

and his mates, driving in shifts of about 6 hours each, did more than master the challenges of Florida’s famous Daytona International Speedway: They finished 22 laps ahead of the next car in. The spoils? Engraved Rolex Daytona watches for all — fitting, since the Boulles have sold Rolex watches for almost 30 years. goddess, cherries and Marcona almonds), the fresh orecchietti pasta (with San Marzano tomatoes and aged pecorino cheese) and the chicken paillard (with sunchoke, arugula and charred lemon) THE IN-DEMAND DINNERS The grilled lobster, “a cult classic already,” says Joule hotel executive chef Junior Borges, who collaborated on the menu with Mirador executive chef Josh Sutcliff. And while many order it for their main course, Borges is seeing “a lot of lobster shared by the whole table.” Also hot: the eight-course tasting menu, which “really tells the story of Mirador.” THE HOTTEST TABLE Table 19, a corner spot. If you can’t get it, any table on the terrace will keep your social status, as will a seat at the bar in the lounge. THE TOP TIPPLE The Strawberry Word, made with gin, strawberry and passion fruit. The mostordered non-alcohol drink? The house iced tea. MOSTORDERED CHAMPAGNE The Flor prosecco from Veneto, Italy THINGS THEY BLAST THROUGH IN A DAY The Lieu Dit sauvignon blanc, the french fries with garlic aioli and bottles of Ting, a Jamaican grapefruit soda. Oh, and spoons, lots of spoons, for shareable desserts such as the apple-pie praline or the Lemon Pavlova, the latter with champagne berries, citrus mousse and mixedberry sorbet. IT’S COMPLICATED The orecchietti, “one of the most simple-looking dishes,” isn’t, says Borges. The semolina pasta is housemade, but even more complex are the tomatoes. They take three days. They are cured, marinated, strained and then mixed with hot olive oil— and only then are they finished with fried breadcrumbs, for texture. “All pretty simple things,” says Borges, “but ones that create a complexity of flavor.” MOSTORDERED DESSERT The apple-pie praline TOTAL TABLES 42, including the patio. riginal Halston sketches in the couture fitting rooms? A Matisse in the baby-changing room? The new Neiman Marcus in Fort Worth’s Clearfork—the modernist, mixed-use development just outside downtown—is one artful place. Yes, there is high-style fashion, including first-namers Oscar, Carolina and Ralph. Yes, there are high-tech helpers, everything from scroll-and-tap store directories to makeup mirrors that make videos —sent later to phones and computers— so that women may mimic at home what the makeup artist did in the store. But the nearly 95,000-square-foot emporium is rich in the visual arts, as well, hung with works by blue-chip artists and emerging ones, too, including regional standouts Carol Benson, Charlotte Smith, Marcelyn McNeil and the collaborative artists Matt Clark and Jackson Echols. Two artists’ works, though, caught our eye, from two different men — one internationally famous, one from Fort Worth — working in a wildly vibrant vein. FRANK STELLA The Neiman Marcus art collection started, effectively, with Stanley Marcus’ purchase in 1951 for the Prestonwood Town Center store of a monumental mobile by Alexander Calder. (In fact, he purchased it from Calder.) That begat a corporate collecting journey to today’s approximately 2,500 works, by artists for whom last names are enough: Picasso, Lichtenstein, Judd and many more. One of those impressive pieces hangs in the men’s department of the new store in The Shops at Clearfork: a large, graphic work by New York superstar Frank Stella, made of precision-painted bands of color tightly reigned in by thin white borders, executed between 1969 and 1970 for the centennial of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Neiman Marcus was able to purchase it in 1977 for its original Ridgmar Mall store. It is an exuberant, stylized M—for Metropolitan— almost 7 feet square. The M became the symbol of The Met’s centennial, making it onto everything from posters to plaques. Here, amid luxurious clothes by the likes of Cucinelli, Zegna and Balenciaga, the M could well stand for menswear. JOHN HOLT SMITH One floor up, near racks dangling with Carolina Herrera, Zac Posen and Lela Rose, are two works of a different stripe:

the brilliant, bright lines of John Holt Smith. Smith is homegrown, born in Fort Worth. His abstract works hang at the Joule hotel in Dallas and in Terminal D at DFW International Airport. The famous Neiman Marcus Christmas catalog? In 2006, Holt’s stripes got the cover. Here, the company commissioned two pieces, and Holt set to work in his madman method: He takes a digital photograph himself— in these cases, a girl swimming in a pool in Fort Worth and a field of Texas wildflowers—then pinpoints and enlarges a cross-section of the image, digitally stretching the result into striations. “And then, if I like what I see,” he tells us, “I paint it.” Indeed, he hangs an enlargement of the manipulated photo next to a same-sized sheet of aluminum, then painstakingly paints each tiny stripe —some as thin as a human hair —onto it. All by hand. In the predominantly blue work, Vertical Swim Sequence, Holt says there are about 1,000 lines of acrylic paint. Does he ever go batty while working this way? “I do lose track of time,” he says. “I look up and six hours have gone by.” B

Stella’s lines stay to themselves, with thin white borders reigning them in. Smith’s lines blur fuzzily into one another, mixing and mingling, shimmying and shaking.

TEXAS PAGE -TURNERS From a most bookish new bunch, the five books that every good Texan—born here or not—must read.

Nancy Perot has waited a long time for this. The daughter of Margot and Ross Perot — the heads of the Perot dynasty of business and philanthropy — is about to cut the ribbon on a 25-year dream: a full-service, self-supporting bookstore.“Dallas is a city of book lovers,” she says,“who appreciate more than ever the value of what an independent bookstore has to offer.” With Lori Feathers (she’s a book reviewer and a member of the National Book Critics Circle ) as buyer and co-owner and Jeremy Ellis (he’s a seasoned bookseller and a board member of the Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Association ) as manager and operating partner, owner Perot is turning 5,000 square feet at the corner of Preston Road and Royal Lane into bookworm bliss, stocked with some 12,000 titles. They’re calling it Interabang Books, for the quirky 1960s punctuation mark that morphs a question mark with an exclamation point — inquisitiveness and excitement in one. There will be fiction, creative fiction and children’s books. There will be readings, signings and plays. And there will be bibliophiles — lots and lots of bibliophiles. Ahead of its May opening, we asked Interabang’s three head bookworms about their favorite books about a favorite place: Texas. —Rob Brinkley

Watt Matthews of Lambshead, an award-winning book by renowned Dallas photographer Laura Wilson, belongs on the bookshelf of every Texan — and anyone interested in the history of the great cattle-ranching families who shaped the character, history and mystique of our state. Through stunning black-and-white photography and thoughtfully penned text, Wilson chronicles the way of life of Matthews, one of the last great Texas cattlemen. In Wilson’s words, “While the rest of Texas has become part of the late 20th century, Lambshead Ranch has remained its own separate world.” A third edition of the book, first published in 1989, is coming in mid-May and includes new material about the ranch and Wilson’s photography. —Nancy Perot, co-owner

A finalist for the 2016 National Book Award, News of the World, by San Antonio poet and memoirist Paulette Jiles, seems in the opening pages to be a familiar and old-fashioned Western tale. But this beautiful novel takes many unexpected turns as Captain Kidd and his young charge, Johanna, travel across Texas in the 1880s. Exquisitely drawn characters and pitchperfect historic details made this one of my personal favorites of last year. —Jeremy Ellis, general manager, co-owner

What happens when a larger-than-life dealmaker is elected to high office? No, I’m not talking about the guy who currently sits in the Oval Office but Arthur Goddam Fenstemaker, Texas governor in Billy Lee Brammer’s 1961 classic political novel The Gay Place. A Dallas native and former staffer for Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, Brammer joins political satire, colorful characters and writing that dazzles in three related novels-within-a-novel. It’s an enthralling portrait of what 1950s Texas politics might have been had LBJ been governor. —Lori Feathers, book buyer, co-owner

This unflinching look at the troubled history of white settlers and the Comanche Indians centers on the greatest Comanche chief of all time, Quanah Parker — who also happened to be half white. The history is interesting enough, but the real reason this 2010 book, Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History, became a classic is the sublime writing of S.C. Gwynne, the longtime Texas Monthly editor and writer. With color and nuance, it often seems like Gwynne was in the room where it happened. It’s worth reading again and again. —J.E.

In school back east, they taught us the five basic food groups. It didn’t take long after I moved to Dallas to discover that for Texans, four of the five are meat. With The Prophets of Smoked Meat: A Journey Through Texas Barbecue, Daniel Vaughn, Texas Monthly’s first and reigning barbecue editor, takes an epic road trip — some 10,000 Texas miles — to sample the offerings at nearly every meat market, smoke pit, shed, shack and hole-in-the-wall. Accompanying Vaughn is Dallas photographer Nicholas McWhirter, whose images capture the people, the meat and the Texas landscape. Nancy Whitenack [the owner and director] and Deanette Dufilho [the director and Project Room curator] are incredibly knowledgeable and have a really passionate, emotional experience with their artists’ work. SHOPS Leslie Pritchard’s shop, Again & Again, has some of the most special midcentury modern furniture in the city. In addition to beautiful vintage and antique stuff, they also do restoration, in case you need one of your favorite pieces brought back to life.Vagabond Vintage Dallas is a must! They have some of the most amazing vintage rock ’n’ roll T-shirts that are perfectly worn, plus vintage garb. Their prices are insanely cheap. Lula B’s has a little bit of everything: furniture, fixtures, clothes, jewelry, oddities and more. Make sure you have an entire afternoon carved out.

Lots of entrepreneurial types, creatives and small-business owners live and/or work here. SECRETS The Trinity Strand Trail runs behind our live-work property. There is easy access from it to the Katy Trail and to the new and expanding park and lake areas in the new Trinity River Corridor Project between the Trinity River levees. There are extensive hike-and-bike trails that are uncrowded and paved that follow the Trinity River.You can ride under our new bridges over the river, well past downtown, with no car traffic! SERVICES Whole Foods and a flagship Kroger are minutes away. We are blocks away from one of the finest medical complexes in the country: University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Parkland Memorial Hospital. Being an old light-industry area, there are lots of cottage industries like fabrication, bookbinding and woodworking close by. And thank goodness for Elliott’s Hardware. SURPRISES It is like living in the country in many ways, but being five minutes from downtown. Our neighbors found a blueberry patch and when the berries are ripe, we make tarts with them. f you feel an apocalypse is imminent, get to Fannin County, Texas, fast, and hang a left when you see Poseidon. The Greek god — chief operating officer in charge of seas, earthquakes and storms—and his galloping horses, all rendered in blinding white marble, are definitely standouts on a sleepy rural road between Ector and Savoy, some 70 miles northeast of Dallas. The five-story statue is the centerpiece of a gushing fountain, which marks the entrance to a community that is being called everything from a “five-star playground equipped with DEFCON 1 preparedness” to a “luxury underground doomsday village.” It is Trident Lakes, a planned community of about 600 condominiums — which you will barely be able to see. Each of the units will be burrowed into the ground, hidden under 700 acres of undulating farmland, with only a patio and a glass wall onto the outside world. The view out that window? One of three sparkling lagoons. Trident Lakes is preparing for the worst while embracing the best. Up top, there will be shops, restaurants, jogging paths, a spa, a polo field, a hotel, an equestrian center, an athletic center, an 18-hole golf course and 12 helipads. (And if demand dictates, an airplane runway.) Down below, each bunker —the square footages range from 900 to 4,500, with prices estimated at $500,000 to $1.5 million—will have all the usual conveniences, plus a few key extras. “In the event of an emergency,” says tridentlakes.com, “air-lock blast doors close off the patio, securing you inside your unit.” And then? Off-the-grid sources will take care of water, electricity and air while the residents take care of food: Everyone is required to stock at least a year’s worth. Underground tunnels will lead to a community center, complete with meeting areas, exercise rooms and a greenhouse. And then there are the DNA vaults: Store a bit of you to, one day, make another you. Is it all just high-dollar hysteria—or savvy readiness? You decide. Trident Lakes promises protection from “a litany of known dangers,” including nuclear attack, pandemic, weather disasters, government overreach and World War III. Pass muster after a waiting list, questionnaire, interview and vetting and you may— just may —be extended an invitation to live there. There will be one other community feature that could be useful should the end be frightfully near: a chapel. Sometimes, you need all the help you can get. B

BEVERLY HILLS GOES BIG ANNA FIALHO BYERS CHECKS ON THE NEW CALIFORNIA HOTEL THAT JUST MIGHT MAKE A TEXAN MOVE Yes, Texans are famously known for grand gestures — which is precisely why you should be checking in for a week, at least, to the new Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, the hotel brand’s first foray on the West Coast. The Art Deco–inspired masterpiece opens in June on 9 lush acres and, trust us, it makes a sizable statement. Here, five reasons any big-thinking Texan will feel right at home. THE BIG LUXURY OF THE BIG PENTHOUSE. L Pickups give men a chance to look and act rugged in a world that’s not very rugged anymore.

et’s be honest. Unless you are a genuine rancher, it makes no practical sense whatsoever for you to own a pickup truck. The typical pickup measures 6 feet tall, 6 feet wide and nearly 20 feet long, with side-view mirrors the size of oil derricks. It doesn’t fit into most parking spaces, and driving one into a parking garage is an exercise in terror. On the road, it takes up an entire lane. If you drift only a little bit to the left or right, you’re liable to sideswipe another vehicle. And then there’s the bed of the truck, which is designed to hold machinery, lumber, rock piles and the occasional farm animal. It’s not remotely suited to carry out simple tasks, like transporting your children to soccer practice. Yet, in Texas, there is a monolithic reverence for the pickup that matches Texans’ love for football, cowboy boots, snap-button western shirts and longnecks. One out of every five pickups sold in the United States is bought in Texas, far more than any other state. And it’s not just country people who are buying them: In 2015, more pickups were sold in Dallas and Houston than in the entire state of California. Auto manufacturers in Detroit and, yes, Japan, leap through hoops to get us to buy their trucks. They court us with flashy television commercials, in which trucks are seen roaring across golden prairies while an announcer with a voice as deep as God informs us that the trucks are “built Texas tough.” The manufacturers name many of their trucks after Texas. There’s the Chevrolet Silverado Texas Edition and the Dodge Ram Lone Star Edition, both of which feature Texas-themed badges, gleaming 20-inch wheels, wraparound chrome bumpers and beefy running boards. The Nissan Texas Titan gets extra chrome, extra Texas badging and floor mats emblazoned with the shape of guess what. The Ford F-150 King Ranch has its leather seats emblazoned with the ranch’s Running W brand: the ultimate icon of Texas manliness. These trucks, when fully loaded, cost the same as luxury cars, up near $70,000. Think about that. Men — more than 90 percent of pickup owners are male — throw down that kind of money just so they can drive a truck to their job at an office building or zip over to the mall to watch a movie. What is going on? Marketing studies commissioned by auto manufacturers have found that 70 percent of pickup buyers don’t need them the way oilfield roughnecks and ranch hands and building contractors do. They simply want them. In some sort of philosophical way, driving a pickup is a way for them to be tied to Texas’ mythic past — “a part of the myth we can hold on to,” said Ron Tyler, when he was executive director of the Texas State Historical Association. Pickups give men a chance to look and act rugged in a world that’s not very rugged anymore — to be on top of the road, with the country music cranked up and the gas pedal slammed to the floor. They feel better about themselves, more attractive to the opposite sex. In fact, according to one of those marketing studies, most women think that a man who drives a truck is better-looking than a man who drives a car. What’s more, the women say, driving a black pickup makes the man even more appealing. So, gentle readers, if you see a man in a pickup headed home from the grocery store with sacks full of milk and frozen foods in the truck bed, or if you see him sitting on his truck’s tailgate in his suburban driveway, drinking a beer with his dog beside him, please — let him live out his fantasy. He’s getting his chance to be a real Texan — to be the man he wants to be. B

AS TWISTERS IT MAY SAY HILL COUNTRY ON THE OUTSIDE, BUT INSIDE, THIS PRESTON HOLLOW HOUSE — AND ITS PEOPLE — TELLS A DIFFERENT STORY ALTOGETHER

ve Wiley was up against the impossible. She was living with her husband, Blake Wiley, in the place he had called home for 10 years. “I was a late addition to that house,” Eve says, of the New Orleans–style abode in Dallas’ gridded M Streets neighborhood. “I’ll just characterize it as amateur-artcollector-meets-eclectic-bachelor-pad.” The St. Patrick’s Day parties there drew almost 1,000 people. The Texas-OU parties? A 2,000-pound Texas Longhorn steer would be in the front yard. The writing was on the wall: They would eventually need a bigger place. (Hint, hint.) Besides, Eve says, “It’s hard to evolve a home from a pool-table house to a dining-table house.” They found their ultimate upgrade in leafy Preston Hollow, in a clean-lined two-story with a Texas twist, all limestone and stucco and standing-seam roof. Dallas firm Bernbaum-Magadini Architects had designed the house with sliding window walls, large living spaces— indoors and out— even a modernist fireplace at one end of the capacious kitchen. It was perfect for the Wileys, who now number four instead of two. Son Hutton, almost 3, and daughter Scarlett, soon to be 6 months, have certainly upended things — so how to furnish such a place for

a new brood? Their Realtor suggested Alice Cottrell, a Dallas designer known for her mastery of comfortable contemporary. Plywood-plank chairs? Steel settees? Cottrell has always gone for plush and plump, instead. For the young family’s new digs, Cottrell, with collaborator Gary Hatch, had some big ideas. THE PLAN Blake: We had gathered a rather large file of magazine articles, Instagram posts and catalogs that conveyed the direction we wanted to go. From there, Alice did her magic. We never would have paired a 20-million-year-old, petrifiedwood table with a Paul Smith striped bench—but Alice can do it and it looks incredible. BIG CHANGES? Blake: We were lucky and didn’t need to do any major renovations. We added the frequency-pattern wallpaper to the dining room, changed out four chandeliers and two sconces, removed a cabinet in the kitchen, put a fence around the pool and added a special door for our Maltese, Honey. FAVORITE THINGS Eve: The live-edge wooden breakfast table in a crescent shape. It brings an earthy feel to the kitchen. This is where we gather as a family for meals, where some of our most intense game nights take place and where some of our best conversations happen. Blake: The Nazca tunic, which is the first piece you see when you enter the home. The idea that a Peruvian was wearing this robe around the Ica Valley coast a thousand years before Columbus set sail—and that it

has been passed down through so many generations — amazes me. I want to take it out of the frame and wear it, but Eve won’t let me. FAVORITE SPACES Eve: The kitchen. I love to cook, and our kitchen is set up so that I can cook while watching our children play outside. When the kids are older, they will be able to sit on the barstools and do their homework while we catch up on how their day went. There’s also a sitting area by a fireplace that makes a great spot for reading a book — when we’re able to find any free time. Blake: The great room. I love a good fireplace in the winter, and I love the way the sunlight plays through the room in the summer. There is also a Juliet balcony where Hutton likes to hide —or jump out and surprise us. ART BY HEART Blake: We both have to feel a connection to a piece, because it’s a very intimate thing to have something in your home that you see daily and that is such a noticeable and constant visual. We never collect art to fill a blank wall. GOOD MORNING Eve: Our children tend to dictate when our days get started and end. If we’re able to rise before they do, then a little morning meditation to clear the head always leads to a joyful and productive day. HOME SWEET HOME Blake: It’s refined and sophisticated while also being livable and functional. For instance, Alice had the couches re-covered with outdoor fabric to be able to withstand Hutton’s best efforts. We didn’t want the house to be a museum.

hree years of my life, gone.” That pronouncement is followed by a deep laugh, which is followed by a flash of the iciest blue eyes, ever. Charlotte Jones Anderson has been a little busy. Cranes are swinging outside her office window in Frisco, all around The Star, the newly opened, 91-acre headquarters compound of the worldfamous Dallas Cowboys football team. The place gives new meaning to the word multifunctional: It boasts a 12,000-seat indoor football stadium, two outdoor football fields, a cafeteria, corporate offices for the Cowboys and rentable meeting spaces. Soon to come are a luxury gym, a private social club, restaurants, shops, an Omni hotel and a Baylor Scott & White sports-rehab facility. And you thought your to-do list was long. Anderson — her dad is Jerry Jones, the Dallas Cowboys owner, president and general manager — has been on the project every shovelful of dirt along the way. She has worked for the Cowboys since 1989, the year after she graduated from Stanford University, and today she oversees everything from brand marketing and stadium design to community relations and the inimitable Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. The Star has Anderson’s imprint all over it, from the sports facilities to the furnishings to the contemporary art collection, an extension of the one she and her mother, Gene Jones, so brilliantly oversee for AT&T Stadium. “There is nothing,” Anderson says, “that I didn’t sign off on. This was my baby.” Especially her office. Behind a pair of massive, Macassar-ebony pocket doors is Anderson’s inner sanctum, a virtually all-white space cut with more gleaming Macassar ebony at each end, as walls and shelves, and pops of bright blue, a nod to the Cowboys’ signature hue. Anderson’s office walks the line between modernist — clean-lined furnishings, contemporary art — and maximalist, with plush white carpeting and guest chairs upholstered in what looks like metallic white snakeskin. She was inspired, she says, by the office of mercurial magazine editor Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, a surprisingly soft and pretty space for such a hard-nosed character in an intense industry. That isn’t lost on Anderson: “I had to make something feminine out here,” she says — followed by that delicious, deep laugh again.

love the city. Dallas has this air of can-do, this air of infinite possibilities. It has all my life. It has not stopped. A HIGH I have grown up in a city I love, waiting on and serving people that I have since the ’60s, then waiting on their children and now their children’s children. My education was in some of Dallas’ finest dining rooms. That is what I love about Dallas. Great economic expansion and here we go! A LOW A surreal moment in my life — one of them— was in 2009 when someone told me, “You are on the cover of D Magazine.” I read just the first page [of the story inside]. It was essentially like reading my own obituary. But, if you read the story, it is a great story of an American company. Eighty percent of it was true and 20 percent of it was not. DESIRE Cynical people will say that we got extraordinary results from ordinary people. Well, I say we all want to belong and become someone. BOUNCING BACK I always knew I was going to have a restaurant again. My daughter Bianca was in private school and I was content to have a broom in my hand and have a restaurant. Fast-forward to now: We are working on restaurant No. 5 and going on six. Again, the city that I love has embraced us. It is an exciting time. It is a time of gratitude. HIS DAD Even though I have gotten the acclaim and have been embraced by the city and told that I am good at what I do, my mother and I still believe my dad was the best restaurateur. He could just grab a dining room — not because he was demanding attention but because he was a service man. He had charisma, but at the same time he was very humble. THE BIG REGRET Doing alcohol and drugs. Nothing good came from it.

In fact, it almost killed me. If I could give one piece of advice to young people, it would be to stay strong and clean and refuse all drugs, and only drink alcohol if you can control it, in moderation. Constantly pray, rely on God and live in a state of gratitude.There is so much to be grateful for. THE BIG PICTURE To this day, my mother will say things like, “I never had the opportunity to do more than one restaurant.” And I say, “Momma, you have done hundreds. Because not only have you done Mia’s, you have done 25 or 30 Mi Cocinas, Taco Diners, Meseros, Mercurys, Citizens.” That was the culture I grew up in: the restaurant culture. She does not relate to that. But I think both of us know that. WHO IS HE? I am a boss but I am also a brother, a father, a husband. And I am still growing as a person. THAT FAMOUS MARGARITA I think it is one of Dallas’ iconic drinks. There are so many stories connected to the Mambo Taxi. I always said, “Don’t blame it on the Mambo!” There were plenty of people who said, “Mico, we have been married for years, and when we come here and have three Mambos, it’s like we’re high-school sweethearts again.” HUMILITY Here is a piece of advice my dad gave me: Never stop being a waiter. SUCCESS Suddenly, the people who work for you are treating you differently. They expect to see a wad of cash in your hand.
