'T_ GJ\OIK UT ]NGZ _U[ ]U[RJ JU JOLLKXKTZR_% I don’t know that I would do anything differently, but I do have some advice. Create a budget before doing anything else. Be gracious when family and friends are giving advice, but do not feel obligated to use it. It’s alright to break from “tradition.” Consider giving a donation in lieu of favors. We didn’t have a huge budget for favors, so we decided it would be better to give the money to a charity. =NGZ ]GY _U[X =5= SUSKTZ% The most amazing part was marrying the man I love, and seeing how happy he was with the way it all turned out. .U] JOJ _U[ SKKZ% Grant and I were high school sweethearts but broke up when we decided to go to different colleges. Our families were devastated, but we wanted to experience college without the weight of a long-distance relationship. We dated other people but both compared every date to each other. After college, I decided to go to law school in Austin, Texas. Grant likes to say that I chose Austin because he was in Texas. We reconnected and began visiting each other, and one day Grant called and said, “Do you want to be my girlfriend? Again.” And what we didn’t want to begin with—the long-distance relationship—we ended up with anyway. We stayed apart for three years, me in Austin and Grant in Dallas. After law school, I moved to Dallas, moved in with a cousin, and Grant proposed about four months later.

.U] JOJ NK VXUVUYK% After we got together again, everyone knew we would get married. In my family, it became a fun game guessing when he would propose. One random Friday night, he asked what I wanted to do. Luckily for Grant, I am very indecisive. 34 spring/summer weddings 2010

Thus he was able to veil his whole plan under the guise of “I’ll find a restaurant on Urban Spoon. Just come over here at 8.” I was so clueless that I did not even flinch when he told me that we were going to the Mansion, the nicest restaurant in Dallas if not Texas, where we sat in the chef’s tasting room for an amazing three-hour, seven-course, wine-paired meal. For dessert, the waiter brought out a gorgeous ring sitting inside a fresh orchid. Of course, I started crying, Grant came over, whispered that he’d loved me for 10 years and wanted me to be his wife. I said yes. We had a moment. Then outside on the gorgeous open-air patio our friends were waiting with champagne.

.U] JOJ _U[ JKIOJK ]NKXK ZU NURJ ZNK ]KJJOTM GTJ XKIKVZOUT% Our families are in Little Rock and we wanted our Texas friends to get to know the place where we grew up. We chose Christ Episcopal Church because it is my family’s church, where my greatgrandparents married, and the Country Club because it has weddings down pat and we didn’t want to deal with a separate caterer.

=NGZ KRKSKTZ ]GY _U[X YZGXZOTM VUOTZ% My dress. I wanted something flowing and chiffon, Grecian-inspired and elegant, and I eventually found a gorgeous Oscar de la Renta dress with layers of chiffon and a gorgeous ruched bodice. My sister, Grace, suggested adding braided straps. .U] JOJ _U[ OSVRKSKTZ _U[X OJKGY% I didn’t want my wedding to have a theme or signature colors. Instead, I wanted everything to be soft and beautiful, as well as ethereal, elegant, garden- and heirloom-inspired. Centerpieces were filled with flowers and fresh peaches, which my mother used after the wedding to make peach cobbler and “wedding peach jam.” The church aisle was lined with topiaries. Grant wanted pecan pie, which went beautifully with the relaxed Southern vibe. And my three bridesmaids’ dresses were custom-made with soft yellow silk organza.

=NGZ KRKSKTZY JU _U[ LKKR ]KXK SUYZ Y[IIKYYL[R% The invitations, bridesmaids’ dresses and the topiary garden at the church.

.U] JOJ _U[ SKKZ% Michael and I met on match.com in January 2009 and met in person that March for a lunch date. By Memorial Day, we had begun to date exclusively and I told one of my dearest friends that I was going to marry him. Four months later, we wed.

*KYIXOHK ZNK XOTM Michael designed the engagement ring, which is three marquise-cut stones in white gold. We then designed two bands with channel-set diamonds to flank each side of the engagement ring.

.U] JOJ _U[ JKIOJK ]NKXK ZU NURJ ZNK ]KJJOTM GTJ XKIKVZOUT% We wanted something very simple and intimate with only family and close friends, and we hoped to hold it outdoors. Bell Gable seemed ideal since it is serene and beautiful and the chapel was the perfect size if we had to move the wedding inside. =NGZ KRKSKTZ ]GY _U[X YZGXZOTM VUOTZ% I told Michael that for me the perfect wedding would have beautiful flowers, candlelight, and include our families.

.U] JOJ _U[ OSVRKSKTZ ZNGZ OJKG% We decided to have a sunset candlelight ceremony and everything came together from there. Julie, our florist, was instrumental in helping to unify all the elements and was able to suggest different vendors to use to complete the look. Our families were involved and Michael’s brother even performed the ceremony. 'T_ GJ\OIK UT ]NGZ _U[ ]U[RJ JU JOLLKXKTZR_% I would suggest that anyone having an outdoor wedding be well prepared for inclement weather. Although we had a place to have the ceremony in case of rain and had a tent delivered, we didn’t do a run through of transitioning from outside to inside. It began raining about thirty minutes before our wedding and it became chaotic trying to move the ceremony inside the chapel and the reception under tents.

=NGZ ]GY _U[X =5= SUSKTZ% When I started down the aisle and Michael turned around and looked at me…everything else disappeared!

0KXKS_ 9ZGRI[V 3G_ 2OZZRK 8UIQ .U] JOJ _U[ SKKZ% We met through mutual high school friends and started dating when Jeremy began college and I was a high school senior. He left a sweet note on my car one summer day asking to see me. I had a crush on him so we went out. We dated for six years before getting married.

.U] JOJ NK VXUVUYK% I thought we were going to a Razorback football game and that Jeremy was picking me up on the way out of town. When I walked outside, a limousine was waiting. It drove me to an apartment where I used to live, where one of my friends was waiting with a gift and a note from Jeremy stating that I could not ask any questions and that, since we had never celebrated an anniversary, this was a celebration of each one we missed. My friend read me his note and then we climbed into the limo. From there, I was taken to six more places where another friend was waiting with a gift and a letter from Jeremy about the importance of that place. At the final location, the lake where we had our first date, my best friend was waiting with the most important letter, which stated that Jeremy would be giving me the gift. When I turned around, Jeremy was there and he proposed.

.U] JOJ _U[ JKIOJK ]NKXK ZU NURJ ZNK ]KJJOTM GTJ XKIKVZOUT% I grew up attending Park Hill Baptist Church. I chose the Arkansas Arts Center because I love the architecture and the layout in the atrium. My style is modern and it fit my vision perfectly. =NGZ KRKSKTZ ]GY _U[X YZGXZOTM VUOTZ% One of my favorite designers is Emilio Pucci, and I based the color scheme on a Pucci tablecloth I found in a magazine.

.U] JOJ _U[ OSVRKSKTZ ZNGZ OJKG% Simply the Best Catering ordered the tablecloths, which I then used as inspiration for my stationery. My cake, bridesmaids’ dresses and flowers were also inspired by the design, and I wore Pucci shoes in the same print. To not overdo it, only five of the tables at the reception featured the print and the rest were charcoal gray.

*KYIXOHK ZNK RUUQ UL _U[X ]KJJOTM Mod, inspired by some of the best fashion designers. I also tried to think outside the box and do something different. I wore a silvery gray Nicole Miller dress, a birdcage veil and vintage mod earrings. We chose gray tuxes for the guys, and Jeremy wore a cobalt blue tie to stand out. Jeremy and I both like Andy Warhol, so I surprised him with an Andy Warhol-inspired groom’s cake that featured a tier with our engagement photos. 'T_ GJ\OIK UT ]NGZ _U[ ]U[RJ JU JOLLKXKTZR_% I would remind myself to slow down and cherish each moment, remembering that this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. =NGZ ]GY _U[X =5= SUSKTZ% Walking into the reception. Jeremy and I were finally married and I was able to see my vision and months of planning turn into a reality. We spent the night dancing and singing and had an unforgettable experience. 38 spring/summer weddings 2010

3ORROK 0UTKY 2[QK 3GZZNK]Y '[M[YZ 3U[TZ 3GMG`OTK .U] JOJ _U[ SKKZ% Luke and I met at the University of Arkansas. Although we had several classes together, we’d never gotten to know one another. On Valentine’s Day of 2006, I was out with one of my girl friends. We ran into Luke and one of his friends, who happened to know my friend, and the four of us ended up hanging out that evening. The next day, I ran into him and he asked me if I wanted to go see a speaker on campus that evening. I said yes, and as they say, the rest is history.

.U] JOJ NK VXUVUYK% For two summers, Luke worked on his master’s degree at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. I flew up to visit and he showed me around campus and to a favorite spot called the Grotto, a small cave-like structure filled with candles that people have lit. It’s a beautiful, quiet spot where people go to think and pray. As we stood looking at the burning candles, Luke dropped down on one knee and asked me to be his wife.

.U] JOJ _U[ JKIOJK ]NKXK ZU NURJ ZNK ]KJJOTM GTJ XKIKVZOUT% I wanted a destination wedding, but we wanted our closest friends and family to be able to attend and thought that might be difficult. We had been hiking on Mount Magazine and thought it was pretty, and with the majority of our family and friends in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas, it was just a short road trip away.

=NGZ KRKSKTZ ]GY _U[X YZGXZOTM VUOTZ% The first item that we purchased was the dress for the flower girl. My sister saw it online and it was the right size, a pretty color and a great deal. When the dress came, it was a beautiful shade of green. From there, I decided to let the colors of nature be my inspiration.

.U] JOJ _U[ OSVRKSKTZ ZNGZ OJKG% The invitations, which my sister designed, are green and brown and have a branch motif, which we used on the programs and other stationery. We carried through the natural idea to the decorations in the banquet room, using lanterns for centerpieces on some tables while others had arrangements of flowers and greenery. *KYIXOHK ZNK RUUQ UL _U[X ]KJJOTM As we started planning, my sister and I dubbed it “rustic romance.” I wanted it to be very beautiful and classic but not overdone. 'T_ GJ\OIK UT ]NGZ _U[ ]U[RJ JU JOLLKXKTZR_% I wouldn’t change a thing. It was difficult at times planning a wedding in Arkansas while living in Texas. However, it meant that I had an excuse for a weekend road trip with my mom, sister and niece to Mount Magazine to meet vendors and make final decisions. =NGZ ]GY _U[X =5= SUSKTZ% After my dad and I walked down the aisle, my cousin and his wife sang a chorus of “Surely the Presence of the Lord is in this Place.” Hearing the words to that song while being surrounded by friends and family and about to marry the man I love was indescribable. 40 spring/summer weddings 2010

.U] JOJ _U[ SKKZ% Wes and I met at the University of Arkansas. My cousin and Wes are great friends, and after running into each other over the course of about a year, I finally asked him on a date. It was a sorority function six-and-a-half years ago and we’ve been together ever since.

.U] JOJ NK VXUVUYK% Wes knew I wanted to get married on Mount Nebo, and he proposed on a visit to my parents’ cabin there. A family ritual is to watch the sunset every night. Wes and I happened to be the only ones at the cabin, and on our walk to watch the sunset he asked me to show him where I thought we should get married. I stopped to show him, and when I turned around he was on one knee.

=NGZ KRKSKTZ ]GY _U[X YZGXZOTM VUOTZ% The sunset. My colors were coral orange, sky blue and hints of fuchsia. Once I settled on this palette, everything else just fell into place, including my dress. It had copper metal thread in the fabric that created an iridescent apricot sheen.

.U] JOJ _U[ OSVRKSKTZ ZNGZ OJKG% I have always liked to be different, and I wanted my wedding to be unique. My bridesmaids chose their own dresses, with my help of course, and each was different in fabric, shape and style. I had a lot of ideas for the ambiance of the wedding and, because of time, wasn’t able to 42 spring/summer weddings 2010

do everything, but one of my favorite ideas was hanging painted chandeliers from the trees. With the help of my parents and Wes, we painted several chandeliers various colors and hung them above the reception area. My flowers were very whimsical and followed my color scheme with shades of orange and fuchsia.

*KYIXOHK ZNK RUUQ UL _U[X ]KJJOTM The look of my wedding was very whimsical and “Katie”. That may sound strange but everyone who attended the wedding said, “It was exactly as I imagined Katie’s wedding would be.” =NGZ KRKSKTZ JU _U[ LKKR ]GY SUYZ Y[IIKYYL[R% The location. The sunset, the outdoor reception, the band: everything came together perfectly. It was a weekend trip for most of the guests, who came on Friday and stayed until Sunday. Mount Nebo is an amazing place.

'T_ GJ\OIK UT ]NGZ _U[ ]U[RJ JU JOLLKXKTZR_% I would have had everything at the cabin finished before the guests arrived on Friday, so that I could have enjoyed their company to the fullest. Other than that, it was perfect. =NGZ ]GY _U[X =5= SUSKTZ% For me, it was walking down the aisle. Seeing my guests smiling, Wes’ face and how everything had come together as I had imagined since I was a little girl.
