WELCOME

25th FOYLE FILM FESTIVAL Wednesday 21 - Sunday 25 November 2012 The Foyle Film Festival marks its MILESTONE 25th year with a high quality programme of feature films, workshops, competition screenings, outreach and special events. Over the last 25 years the Foyle Film Festival has become renowned for attracting top industry professionals to the city. Past guests have included high profile names such as: Brendan Gleeson, Julie Christie, Neil Jordan, Wim Wenders, Kenneth Branagh, Roddy Doyle, Stephen Frears, Jimmy McGovern - to name but a few. This year is no exception as the festival launches with the Irish Premiere of ASHES the latest film from Director Mat Whitecross (The Road To Guantanamo, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll). The movie stars Ray Winstone (Nil By Mouth, Quadrophenia, Sexy Beast) and Jim Sturgess (One Day, Fifty Dead Men Walking). Director Mat Whitecross and the stars of

the film Ray Winstone and Jim Sturgess will attend the Irish Premiere of ASHES to launch the 25th Foyle Film Festival on Wednesday 21 November at the Brunswick Moviebowl. ASHES was excutive-produced by Coldplay. New Irish Cinema is well represented with Jump. Filmed in and around DerryLondonderry, the film has received rave reviews. Also screening is Good Vibrations, which charts the life of Terri Hooley, the DJ instrumental in bringing the punk movement to Belfast and for releasing The Undertones’ legendary single ‘Teenage Kicks’. The directors Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn will be in attendance. To coincide with this screening, the Undertones will play a special gig in the Nerve Centre as part of this year’s Festival Club. In 1999 the Foyle Film Festival celebrated a milestone phase as it became an Oscar® affiliated festival - one of only a handful of such events to enjoy this honour. While this year’s festival highlights milestone events in politics by taking a digital journey through the peace process, from its earliest days to the recent historic meeting

and handshake between The Queen and Sinn Fein’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness. The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games celebrated the best of human achievement and endeavour. The success of the games inspired millions of people around the world, and provided a lasting legacy for future generations. The example of the London Olympics 2012 serves as an inspiration for our own city as we move towards hosting the City Of Culture 2013. The Foyle Film Festival is the flagship project of the Nerve Centre - Northern Ireland’s leading creative media arts centre spearheading a diverse range of arts events, cutting edge projects, training opportunities, state-of-the-art production facilities, and Creative Learning Centres in Derry~Londonderry and Belfast. The festival acknowledges the talent, expertise, and dedication, of the management and staff of the Nerve Centre as a driving force behind the development and enduring success of the Foyle Film Festival. City of Derry Crystal continue to support the festival through sponsorship of CCEA

of feature films, short films and documentaries, from around the world, being screened at this year’s Foyle Film Festival. Since the opening of our new, state-of-the art, 7 screen cinema back in August 2011, Brunswick Moviebowl has gone onto to establish itself as one of the leading exhibitors in Northern Ireland. It seemed only fitting then, that Northern Ireland’s premier cinema be part of Northern Ireland’s premier film festival – and so the partnership was formed. It is a terrific honour and a privilege to be associated with the Foyle Film Festival and one we hope to build upon long into the future. I would like to also take this opportunity to ask you all to come out and support this wonderful film festival which has a skilfully crafted programme of events to suit absolutely everyone.

Moving Image Arts Student Awards. The festival is also grateful for the continued support of the Tower Hotel. This year the Foyle Film Festival is delighted to announce a new partnership with the Brunswick Moviebowl. Caoimhin McClafferty, operations manager, commented:

“ Firstly I would like to say that Brunswick Moviebowl is absolutely thrilled and delighted to be hosting the 25th Foyle Film Festival on this their ‘MILESTONE’ year. With this being our first year hosting this prestigious event it is indeed a ‘MILESTONE’ for Brunswick Moviebowl too and we will endeavour to maintain the very high standards set by the Foyle Film Festival over the last 24 years. Secondly, I would like to congratulate Bernie Mc Laughlin, Festival Director & Programmer, and all her team, on the fantastic programme

On behalf of myself and everyone here at Brunswick Moviebowl, I would like to wish the Foyle Film Festival every success on their ‘MILESTONE’ 25th year and look forward to welcoming you all to our complex”. The festival is delighted to announce DaVinci’s Hotel as accommodation sponsor for this year’s event. The festival acknowledges the support of its funders Northern Ireland Screen and Derry City Council. Richard Williams, CEO, Northern Ireland Screen said:

“The Foyle Film Festival has reached a significant milestone this year, with its 25th anniversary. Northern Ireland Screen is delighted to see that their flair and enthusiasm remains as vivid and intense as it did back in 1987, with yet another superb and eclectic programme of screenings and educational events. Through our continued core funding, supported by DCAL, Northern Ireland Screen acknowledges the Foyle Film Festival and the Cinema Initiative at the

Nerve Centre as key components in our efforts to achieve our goal of making a significant contribution to film culture, education and training. We send our sincerest good wishes to Pearse, Bernie and the whole team for another successful festival as they mark their quarter century.” Representing Derry City Council, the Mayor, Councillor Kevin Campbell said:

“It gives me great pleasure as Mayor of Derry to welcome the 25th Foyle Film Festival, an event which has secured its position as a major highlight in the City’s annual events calendar. Derry City Council has always been a proud supporter of the festival, in conjunction with funding partners. The event is an excellent showcase for up and coming talent from both home and abroad. The city has welcomed some of the leading lights in the film industry over the years as well as some of the stars of stage and screen, who have been more than impressed by the homegrown talent here. I must congratulate everyone involved in making the festival a resounding success year on year, and an event which has gained recognition at both BAFTA and Oscar® level. May it continue to provide an invaluable platform for local film makers and artists for many more years to come.” In 2012 the Foyle Film Festival celebrates a MILESTONE 25th year by planning for and looking towards the future. ASHES IRISH PREMIERE BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL CONTEMPORARY

UK.2012. Director: Mat Whitecross. Cast: Ray Winstone, Jim Sturgess, Lesley Manville, Luke Evans, Jodie Whittaker. Duration: 1hr.37mins. Distributor: Cinemax Distribution ltd.

Directed by Mat Whitecross and executiveproduced by Coldplay, ASHES is a contemporary film noir that follows the difficult reconciliation between Frank Barron (Ray Winstone) and his son James (Jim Sturgess).

James tracks his estranged father down to a hospital secure unit and discovers he is suffering from memory loss. James is anxious to take his father back to be with his family, but is informed by the doctor that Frank is suffering from Alzheimer’s. Frank is being confined to hospital for his own good as the disease is making him prone to violent outbursts. Touched by the emotional impact of seeing his father in such a state, James breaks him out of hospital, and the two men go on a road trip with a difference. The journey proves difficult for James, who has to cope with Frank’s hallucinations and mood swings, while trying to hide from the police. As they travel, glimpses of the old Frank emerge, and gradually the two begin to bond. But both men are weighed down by the ghosts of the past, and neither is quite how they seem on the surface… Director Mat Whitecross and the stars of ASHES, Ray Winstone and Jim Sturgess, will be in attendance to introduce the film and take part in an after screening discussion.

OPENING NIGHT AFTER PARTY will kick off approximately 10pm in Martha’s Vineyard at The Brunswick Moviebowl. The audience attending the Opening Night Premiere of ASHES are cordially invited to join the festival team afterwards at a special reception in MARTHA’S VINEYARD, Brunswick Moviebowl, to help launch our MILESTONE 25th Foyle Film Festival.

OPENING NIGHT SPECIAL GUESTS

Close-up on MAT WHITECROSS: After working as an editor on 9 Songs and Scott Walker: 30 Century Man, Mat Whitecross codirected the documentary Road to Guantanamo with Michael Winterbottom, winning the Silver Bear at Berlin for Best Director in 2006. He went on to make music videos for various artists, including Coldplay, Take That and Jay-Z. Mat’s feature film Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, a biography of the life of musician Ian Dury, received wide critical acclaim - winning an Evening Standard British Film Award, as well as nominations from BAFTA, the British Independent Film Awards and the London Critics Circle Film Awards. Mat’s latest projects include Spike Island and Going Mad In Hollywood. Responding to the news that ASHES will receive its Irish Premiere when it opens this year’s festival Director Mat Whitecross said:

“I’m over the moon to be invited to screen ASHES at the 25th Foyle Film Festival. The film is a very personal story, with an incredible cast, and I can’t wait to show it to Foyle audiences. We unveiled Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll at Foyle three years ago, and it’s a great privilege to be asked back.”

SIGHTSEERS NORTHERN IRELAND PREMIERE BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL CONTEMPORARY

Sightseers meticulously sets the scene for the killing spree to follow, by allowing the audience a glimpse into the quiet desperation of Tina’s life as she lives with her co-dependant and bullying mother. Chris’s life isn’t going much better as he is constantly unemployed. For a while the pair seem like a match made in heaven, until we realise they’re actually a matchmade in hell.

NORTHERN IRELAND PREMIERE

“Ben Wheatley just keeps making great movies. Furthermore, they keep getting better… Sightseers is Wheatley’s prettiest, funniest, and most mature film yet…”

End of Watch tells the story of Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Pena), two good LA cops who have formed a close and powerful partnership both as friends and work colleagues. Whether it’s arriving as first responders to a homicide scene or attempting to settle a domestic dispute, Taylor and Zavala are as committed to one another as they are to their roles as keepers of the peace.

BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL CONTEMPORARY

USA.2012. Director: David Ayer. Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña, Natalie Martinez. Anna Kendrick. Duration: 1hr.49mins. DISTRIBUTOR: Studio Canal

UK.2012. Director: Ben Wheatley. Cast: Sara Stewart, Tony Way, Monica Dolan, Alice Lowe, Steve oram Duration; 1hr.28mins. DISTRIBUTOR: Studio Canal

Chris (Steve Oram) and Tina (Alice Lowe) are a couple of misfits, who decide to take a cross-country trip in Chris’ caravan. Tina soon realises that Chris is prone to murdering the obnoxious people he considers to be ruining his beloved countryside. However, rather than being repulsed, Tina excitedly joins him and they embark on a murderous rampage around the countryside.

Emmet Duff, Sound On Sight

“Ten minutes into the film I was amused. Twenty minutes in I was involved. Half an hour this film was gripping me by the throat and not letting me go…It’s bloody brilliant.” David James, London City Nights

And while we see the two of them experience life both on and off the job - Mike’s wife Gabby (Natalie Martinez) gives birth to their child, Brian dates and then marries the pretty and intelligent Janet (Anna

Kendrick) - we start to realise that the pair’s professional activities have put them in the crossfire of a very dangerous drug cartel.

“End Of Watch is one of the best police movies in recent years, a virtuoso fusion of performances and often startling action.” Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

“David Ayer returns to cop fiction with another sun-blanched sweep through the hood - and produces his best work yet.” Henry Barnes, The Guardian

“Like a knife in the eye, End of Watch cuts past the cliches of standard police procedurals, serving instead as a visceral ride-along with two thrill-seeking cops (Gyllenhaal and Pena, both terrific) covertly documenting their beat in South Central L.A.” Peter Debruge, Variety

MIDNIGHT MAYHEM

Thursday 22 Nov | 12am 50th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL PREVIEW SCREENING:

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE ? BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL CLASSIC FILM

USA.1962. Director: Robert Aldrich. Cast: Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Victor Buono, Maidie Norman, Marjorie Bennett. Duration: 2hrs.15mins. DISTRIBUTOR: Park Circus.

Davis is the original ‘Baby Jane’ - a young child vaudeville star who is so successful she even has a doll marketed on her. Her shy sister Blanche (Crawford) can only watch on in consuming envy as the sickly Baby Jane gets all the rapturous attention. But as happens in showbiz, Jane does not grow into a successful star, unlike her ugly duckling sister who becomes the toast of Hollywood. But Blanche’s career is brutally cut short as a tragic car accident leaves her crippled. Held responsible for this is the washed up Jane who’s so drunk she can’t even remember what happened that night. It’s the crux of the film and director Robert Aldrich leaves the details deliberately hazy as we move forward in time to the two sisters living in a crumbling mansion. Davis is cruelly made up having lost all her beauty and Crawford is a virtual recluse, upstairs in her wheelchair. Davis is by now so consumed with bitterness, regret and booze that she takes it out on Crawford in

an escalating campaign of terror. Plenty of these twists were later to be duplicated in Misery.

“There’s nothing quite like Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? With towering performances from two of the 20th century’s greatest stars, a mercilessly witty script and direction which pulls no punches, it’s quite simply the greatest melodrama of its era…If you see just one film starring either of these actresses, see this one…This was the apex of both their careers and it’s an unforgettable ride…They don’t make ‘em like this any more.” Jennie Kermode, Eye For Film

THE RISE AND FALL OF THE CLASH NERVE CENTRE 1 DOCUMENTARY

UK.2012 Director: Danny Garcia. Duration: 1hr.30mins

The Director, Danny Garcia, will introduce this special screening and take part in a Q&A afterwards. The Rise And Fall Of The Clash features previously unseen footage of the band at work and play, interviews with the individual band members and with those who knew them well, and traces the downward trajectory of a band who were at one point “the biggest band in the world”. Over 90 minutes the documentary paints the fascinating inside story of rivalry, treachery, betrayal, and the internal band dynamics and managerial interferance that ultimately led The Clash to self-destruct.

www.facebook.com/ theriseandfalloftheclash Closeup on Filmmaker Danny Garcia: Danny Garcia was born and grew up in Barcelona, where he started writing in the Spanish music press in the early nineties after interviewing The Cramps’ Lux Interior and Poison Ivy. He has since contributed to a number of publications, including the US magazine High Times. In the early 2000’s Danny Garcia developed a series of documentaries for BTV (Barcelona’s own TV station) depicting the local Hip Hop scene in chapters: b-boys, graffiti artists, MC’s, DJ’s and producers. It was thanks to this experience that Danny took on producing and directing his own films. The Rise And Fall Of The Clash marks his first major production, a film that deals with the obscure end of one of Danny’s childhood favourite bands, and one that took him on a journey to the core of the band’s camp in West London while searching for the inside story.

THE BOOKSELLER OF BELFAST

No one sleeps. Cigarettes are smoked in bed throughout the night. Everyone has a dream, broken or as yet unfulfilled. “Never take away a man’s dreams”, says John Clancy, because it’s like taking away a part of his soul. Just as he lost a part of his soul the night his shop in Smithfield went up in flames.

NERVE CENTRE 2 DOCUMENTARY NI.2011 Director: Alessandra Celesia Duration: 58 mins

A bookseller without a bookshop, a rapper covered in scars, a dyslexic opera-loving punk, a singer auditioning for X Factor, a mattress too big for a bed, another bomb scare… The staircases of John Clancy’s terraced house are filled with hundreds of unsold volumes like a Noah’s ark of knowledge of a town that has known stormy times. His attic is filled with stacks of letters from around the world thanking him. For John, it’s not a job. It’s a vocation. Postage is always included and the poorest students pay their debts twenty years later. The Bookseller without a bookshop also finds time to initiate his teenage neighbour Robert in the pleasures of reading. Not a simple job because the words don’t come easily to Robert. Robert’s great passion is the ancient times of the Emperors who built and rebuilt Rome. Robert tries, often without much success, to interest his rapper of a brother

“It’s a beautifully shot film, that warmly portrays four wonderful open and warm Belfast characters. An amazing film that shouldn’t be missed if you spot it popping up at a cinema or a festival near you.” Alan in Belfast blog Alessandra Celesia McIlduff is from Italy. She trained at École de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris and has continued working as an actress in theatre in both Italy and Ireland. She has directed a number of films including, ’89 Avenue de Flandre’ for France 2, ‘Luntano’ for Arte and is currently in post-production for her feature length documentary, ‘An Italian Mirage’. Alessandra first came to Belfast 15 years ago and her daughter was born in the city. She had been fascinated by the city for many years but it wasn’t until a chance meeting with John Clancy that she found the subject for the film she had been wanting to make for many years.

GOOD VIBRATIONS BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL CONTEMPORARY

UK/Ireland.2012. Director(s: Lisa Barros D’Sa & Glenn Leyburn. Cast: Jodie Whittaker, Dylan Moran, Richard Dormer, Adrian Dunbar, Andrew Simpson, Mark Ryder. Duration: 1hr 50 mins Distributor: Eclipse Pictures

The Directors Lisa Barros D’Sa & Glenn Leyburn will introduce the screening and take part in Q&A afterwards. “Seasons come and go and the music is constantly changing, but when punk rock ruled over Ulster nobody ever had more excitement and fun. Between the bombings and shootings, the religious hatred and the settling of old scores, punk gave everybody a chance to LIVE for one glorious burning moment. Let it provide inspiration.” Joe Strummer, November 2002 Good Vibrations charts the life story of Terri Hooley, the DJ and record store owner who was instrumental in bringing the punk movement to Belfast. Terri grew up in Belfast and decided to open his shop, Good Vibrations, during the

1970s when Belfast was a war zone. As well as being a haven for music buffs, Good Vibrations was also home to a record label that was responsible for launching the careers of legendary bands such as The Undertones, Rudi, and The Outcasts. The music is iconic, the story inspirational and the man unique.

“Saw a terrific new Irish Indie based on true story called Good Vibrations. Inspiring, funny, great music and character moments. Look for it.” Ron Howard, Director

“The story is so brilliant and so inspiring you have tears welling up in your eyes, especially at the moment when the great John Peel plays Teenage Kicks on his show and then gets to the end and plays it again…This is one of the great rock n roll films. There is none of the scrubbed up bullshit… This is a film that should be shown to anyone who wants to play, release or make music…A totally brilliant piece of work about a brilliant moment in time.” John Robb, Louder Than War THE UNDERTONES @ THE NERVE CENTRE: In conjunction with the screening of GOOD VIBRATIONS, the UNDERTONES will be playing a special gig later tonight in the NERVE CENTRE. Tickets for the gig cost £15, plus booking fee, and are available from www. wegottickets.com

PING PONG NERVE CENTRE 2 DOCUMENTARY

UK.2012. Director: Hugh Hartford. Cast: Les D’Arcy, Dorothy deLow, Lisa Modlich. Duration: 1hr.20mins. Distributor: Channel 4 Britdoc Foundation

Les D’Arcy is a living legend. At 89 years old, he’s obviously not received the memo about slowing down, and is going for gold, literally. He’s headed to China to compete in the over 80s Table Tennis Championships in Inner Mongolia. A seven time world champion, he still lifts weights to train – something he’s been doing for decades, after surviving a sickly childhood. Of course, compared to some, Les is a spring chicken.

Australian legend Dorothy deLow is 100, and finds herself a mega celebrity in this rarefied world. She’d better watch out though - Texan Lisa Modlich is fifteen years her junior and is determined to do what it takes to win her first gold. Director/Producer team Hugh and Anson Hartford follow eight players from five countries, as they prepare to compete in this extraordinary sporting event that is as much about the tenacity of the human spirit as it is about taking home the title.

“Brilliant and deserves to be the hit of the year – 10 stars is not enough for this.” Geoff Wytcherley, Film-News. co.uk

PORTRAIT OF A ZOMBIE BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL CONTEMPORARY

Ireland.2012. Director: Bing Bailey. Cast: Patrick Murphy, Geraldine McAlinden, Rory Mullen. Duration: 1hr.27mins. C Distributor: One Eyed Films

A working class family in Dublin is caught up in a zombie invasion. When son Billy becomes a zombie the family chooses to take care of him in the home much to the

chagrin of the neighbours and local crime boss. Meanwhile, they have invited an American documentary filmmaker to film their situation and the crew is caught up in the mayhem. Will the family prove that blood is thicker than water or will their love lead to their eventual doom? One thing is clear, for the zombies in Ireland, the famine is definitely over.

“An absorbing piece of filmmaking… It strives to blend a documentary styled spoof along with a more conventional horror movie narrative. The result (is) rather impressive…” Marc Lissenburg, SexGore Mutants

STELLA DAYS BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL CONTEMPORARY

Ireland.2012. Director: Thaddeus O’Sullivan. Cast: Martin Sheen, Stephen Rea, Trystan Gravelle, Marcella Plunkett, Tom Hickey, Amy Huberman, Joey O’Sullivan. Duration: 1hr.40 mins. Distributor: Eclipse Pictures

Set in the rural community of mid 1950s Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary is on the cusp of the modern era with the introduction of rural electrification, and young people leaving to find work in England. As a result, the Bishops are becoming worried about the position and power of the Church in this changing world. Bishop Hegerty wants to build new, bigger churches across the diocese that will be the focus of community

life. Father Barry, played by Martin Sheen, is in favour of modernisation, but doesn’t see the need for a new church. Encouraged by the new schoolteacher, Tim McCarthy, he decides to follow his passion by establishing the Stella Cinema to bring fun and entertainment to the town and, at the same time, raise funds for the new church. But he faces plenty of opposition: from the Bishop and a number of influential parishioners who see film as a source of moral corruption, and from locals who doubt they can transform a church hall into a proper cinema in a few weeks. He also faces his own crisis of conscience when he discovers that Tim has fallen in love with Molly Phelan, a married woman. Stella Days encapsulates the dilemma of Ireland in the mid-1950s - on the cusp of the modern but still clinging to the traditions of church and a cultural identity forged in very different times. The film has echoes of Cinema Paradiso, and a truly captivating performance from the sublime Martin Sheen.

“The great Martin Sheen in one of his most beautifully judged performances.” Esther McCarthy, Sunday World

“…a gem of a film.” The Irish Times

GREAT EXPECTATIONS IRISH PREMIERE

BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL CONTEMPORARY

UK/USA.2012. Director: Mike Newell. Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, Jason Flemyng, Robbie Coltrane. Duration: 2hrs.9mins. Distributor: Lionsgate

Based on the Charles Dickens classic. Orphan Pip rises from humble circumstances thanks to a mysterious benefactor. Moving through London’s class-conscious world as a gentleman, Pip uses his new status to pursue Estella, a beautiful, heartless heiress

he has always loved. The shocking truth behind his fortune will have devastating consequences to everyone he cares about. Directed by Mike Newell and scripted by ‘One Day’ author David Nicholls, the film features Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham and Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch. Of his new take on a classic tale, Newell explains “I’ve tried to make a film that is true to the theatrical vividness, energetic characters and high colour that (Dickens) is loved for.” Nicholls revealed last year that he had written a new ending for his “thriller” version of the film. “Dickens came up with two endings - one which is incredibly bleak and one which is unrealistically romantic and sentimental,” he said last November. “Neither are quite satisfactory and we’ve come up with an ending that is somewhere in between.” He also said the film would give a glimpse of Miss Havisham’s wedding, an event that has not been seen in previous movie versions.

JUMP BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL CONTEMPORARY

UK/Ireland.2012. Director: Kieron J. Walsh. Cast: Nichola Burley, Martin McCann, Ciaran McMenamin, Richard Dormer, Charlene McKenna, Valene Kane, Lalor Roddy. Duration: 1hr.24mins. Cert: TBC SALES AGENT: AV PICTURES LTD.

Schedule permitting, Martin McCann and Ciaran McMenamin will introduce this screening. Jump follows the lives of four twentysomething’s whose lives collide one fateful New Year’s Eve, amidst the ancient walls of Derry, in a night of fast talk, accidents and intrigue. Crime boss daughter Greta is rescued from suicide by drifter Pearse who’s on a mission to avenge his brother’s mysterious death. Johnny, a small time crook, and Marie, a frustrated shop assistant, are both looking for a fresh start. As the clock approaches midnight and events fall into place, Jump

weaves an existential portrait of our character’s lives as their hopes, fears and secrets are revealed. One of the most refreshing elements of Jump is that, while it certainly can be appreciated by any demographic, it is particularly suited for teens and young adults, in a way that Layer Cake, Snatch and Trainspotting were not. Since adolescence is the time of life when relationships are the most confused and tumultuous, this film seems perfectly crafted for that age group’s sensibilities.

“The story may have started out as a play, but what filmmaker Kieron J. Walsh has put on the screen is pure cinema.” scottsmovies.com

“Jump will provide a fun escape in every festival that programmes it. Very much like Doug Liman’s Go with a nod to Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Jump is a highenergy crime comedy set in the Irish town of Derry on New Year’s Eve… Full of youthful energy and good cheer…” Cinemablographer @ TIFF 2012

RUST & BONE (De rouille et d’os) BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL FOREIGN LANGUAGE

France/Belgium.2012. Director: Jacques Audiard. Cast: Marion Cotillard, Matthias Schoenaerts, Fabien Baïardi. Duration: 2hrs. Language: French with English subtitles. DISTRIBUTOR: Studio Canal

Rust & Bone, Jacques Audiard’s heartrending and audacious follow-up to 2009′s A Prophet, focuses on two inherently damaged individuals - Ali, a single father with a five-year-old son, and Stephanie, an eccentric loose cannon and whale trainer at a local aquatic zoo. The two meet one night outside of a busy nightclub, a fateful exchange between them marking the beginning of an initially uneasy if increasingly important friendship that brings a discernible sense of normalcy to their respective lives. Following a tragic accident at Stephanie’s place of employment, the stage is set rather early on as we quickly get a feel for what each central character struggles with on a day-to-day basis, each of their predicaments growing more dire until they receive their requisite daily dose of, well, each other. Nominated for a Palme d’Or at Cannes this year.

“Jacques Audiard’s moving love story, which surges out of the screen like a flood tide, deserves to be awash with awards.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

“An edgy, fearlessly emotional romance.” Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

“The movie worked me over, then won me over.” Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

THE IMPOSTER

BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL DOCUMENTARY

UK.2012. Director: Bart Layton. Cast: Frederic Bourdin, Adam O’Brian, Carey Gibson. Duration: 1hr.39mins. Distributor: Revolver Entertainment

A gripping thriller straight out of real life, The Imposter is an original film experience that walks the razor’s edge between true-crime documentary and stylish noir mystery. It’s 1994: a 13-yearold boy disappears from his home in San Antonio, Texas. Three and a half years later, he is found alive, thousands of miles away, in Spain. Disoriented and quivering with fear, he divulges his shocking story of kidnap and torture. His family is overjoyed to bring him home. But all is not what it seems. Sure, he has the same tattoos, but he looks decidedly different, and he now speaks with a strange accent. Why doesn’t the family seem to notice these glaring inconsistencies? It’s only when an investigator starts asking questions that this astounding true story takes an even stranger turn.

“Creepier than CATFISH and as cinematic as MAN ON WIRE, this is an unnerving story immaculately told and a strong contender for doc of the year.” Matt Glasby, Total Film

“A mesmerizing, path-breaking tour de force.” The Telegraph

“This outstanding documentary about a French conman is pure suspense from start to finish.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

CLOSING NIGHT GALA

THE HUNT (JAGTEN) IRISH PREMIERE BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Denmark.2012. Director: Thomas Vinterberg. Cast: Mads Middelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Annika Wedderkopp. Duration: 1hr.51mins. Distributor: Verve Pictures.

Thomas Vinterberg’s critically-acclaimed THE HUNT is a powerful and disturbing depiction of how quickly a lie can become the truth when gossip, doubt and malice are allowed to flourish. Following a tough divorce, 40-year-old Lucas is starting to pull his life back together again. He has a new girlfriend, a new job, and is in the process of reestablishing his relationship with his

teenage son Marcus. However one passing remark threatens Lucas’s newfound stability. One of the children he looks after at the nursery where he works, a little girl with a vivid imagination, tells a random lie which is impossible to ignore. Her allegation spreads like a virus, quickly acquiring the veneer of truth the more it is told. As shock turns to mistrust and then malice, it doesn’t take long before this small community is in a collective state of hysteria, igniting a witch-hunt that threatens to destroy an innocent man’s life. Winner of Best Actor (and 2 other awards @ Cannes this year), and nominated for the Palme d’Or.

“Thomas Vinterberg’s best film since Festen is an unsettling psychological drama built around a harrowing performance from Mads Mikkelsen.” David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

“The Hunt offers us, in two hours, a look at the world we exist in, and the equally dangerous world inside our heads. And how the two are both very different and very, very similar.”

Dan Mecca, Cannes 2012 Review

“The Hunt has hints of Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs and Von Trier’s Dogville in its portrayal of group hysteria, with its remorseless antilogic… Mikkelsen’s performance is entirely convincing and all too plausible; and with him at its centre, The Hunt becomes an unbearably tense drama-thriller… There really isn’t ounce of fat on this picture, and the cinematography by Charlotte Bruus Cristensen is ravishingly good. Mikkelsen…shows just how excellent a performer he is.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

WHAT DO YOU SEE? ABOUT AMANDA WARING:

Starring Virginia Mckenna, this powerful ten minute short film takes a journey through a day in the life of stroke victim Elsie. Elsie craves compassion and understanding of the person she is inside, rather than the useless “carcass” she may appear on the outside. Elsie makes a silent but heartfelt plea for her carers to “look closer...see... me”. What Do You See? has been acknowledged as one of the most valuable tools to highlight dignity and respect for the elderly. The film has been used around the world to re-enforce person centered care and the expectation of treating others as you would wish to be treated no matter what age, race, colour, creed or disability. The film was made by Amanda Waring when her mother, the acclaimed actress Dame Dorothy Tutin, was being treated for leukaemia and Amanda witnessed the devastating effect that the lack of compassionate care had on her mind, body, and spirit. The creation of the award winning film What Do You See? has since paved the way for a series

Amanda is an English actress, film director, producer, highly respected speaker and passionate campaigner for improving care. Amanda is on the Governments Dignity Board, as well as being an advisor to many groups on how to improve care. Recently she was the Dignity Presenter for Aged care TV. In 2006, Amanda, with the greater London forum, held her own dignity conference. In 2009, Amanda launched the government’s dignity in care awards and the elder abuse help line for Southern Cross Carehomes. With this special Foyle Film Festival Event, combined with her ongoing work with the government and all relevant health authorities, Amanda hopes to raise awareness around respect for older people. Amanda is passionate in her belief that by educating people to value the life experiences and wisdom of the older generation, then we can help create a more compassionate society for everyone. Copies of Amanda’s book ‘ The heart of Love’ and a selection of her films are on sale on the day. amandawaring.com

A representative from the Alzheimer’s Society of Northern Ireland will take part in an after screening discussion on the themes and issues explored in this documentary. Alzheimer’s and dementia are a reality for an increasing and often unseen population. Though well intentioned, many nursing homes are not equipped to fully meet the needs of these residents. We are left with several questions without any real or comforting answers: How do I want to age? What can we do for our loved ones? Can we do better? ALIVE INSIDE investigates these questions and the power music has to awaken deeply locked memories. The film follows Dan Cohen, a social worker, who decides on a whim to bring iPods to a nursing home. To his and the staff’s surprise many residents suffering from memory loss seem to “awaken” when they are able to listen to music from their past. With great excitement, Dan turns to renowned neurologist Dr. Oliver Sacks, and the film follows both men as they explore the mysterious way music functions inside our brains and our lives. Alive Inside also asks important questions about how we see our elderly, and how we are going to treat an epidemic of these degenerative diseases. Web: www.ximotionmedia.com

THE ENIGMA OF FRANK RYAN NERVE CENTRE 2 Ireland.2012. Director: Desmond Bell. Duration: 1hr.30mins

A sympathetic but searching portrait of Frank Ryan (1902-1944), IRA activist in Ireland, International Brigade Volunteer in Spain and Nazi collaborator in Berlin. Ryan enters a Faustian pact with a Nazi regime he believes will assist in forging a united Ireland. His collaboration is

justified by the republican motto: “My enemy’s enemy is my friend.” But the former radical and internationalist pays a heavy price for this pact. The film raises important questions about the collaboration between the IRA and the Nazis in World War II. It opens up a long suppressed debate about Irish neutrality in that war. Drawing upon Ryan’s correspondence and using a rich mix of period archive combined with live action – with a striking portrayal of Frank Ryan by Dara Devaney - the film makers tell a story of tragic proportions and probes the enigma that was Frank Ryan.

The screening will be introduced by the Director Desmond Bell and followed by a Panel Discussion.

For many viewers, Denis Murray was the face of the Peace Process in Ireland. As the BBC’s Ireland correspondent from 1988 until his retirement in 2008, Murray reported on the pivotal moments on the path to an agreed settlement here. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Foyle Film Festival Denis Murray will take us on an illustrated TV tour of the Peace Process, presenting its iconic moments and giving an insight into the stories behind the stories as we saw them presented on the news. Through this tour we will get an insight into the challenges and realities of reporting contentious history as it happens in the age of 24 hour news. The talk will conclude with a Q & A. Friday 23 Nov | 2pm FOYLE FILM SCHOOL 2012 NERVE CENTRE 1 The very first Foyle Film School took place over five days in September 2012, offering masterclasses by some of Ireland’s leading filmmakers. This initiative, a partnership between the University of Ulster and the Nerve Centre was free to the public, and aimed at both the budding filmmaker and the curious cinema goer. From directing to editing, from producing to sound recording, there was something for everyone interested in the journey from idea to screen. The Masterclasses were delivered by local talent working on the international stage in Broadcast Television and Film Production. Director Brian Henry Martin, producer Margo Harkin, cinematographer Mark McCauley, sound recordist Liz Green, and editor John Martin, described how their roles separately and together combine to bring compelling stories to the screen. Following the week of Masterclasses a group of selected students set out to produce two short documentaries on the theme of ‘Milestones’, which will be premiered during this year’s 25th Foyle Film Festival. Funded by the Garfield Weston Trust and organised by the School of Media, Film & Journalism at the University of Ulster in partnership with the Nerve Centre, the Foyle Film School allowed young people with limited experience of film-making to produce and publicly exhibit their films.

STEVE JOBS: ONE LAST THING

NERVE CENTRE 2 DOCUMENTARY

USA.2011. Director: Mimi O’Connor. Cast: Robert X. Cringely, Bill Fernandez, Demetri Goritsas, Dean Hovey, Steve Jobs, Robert Palladino, Steve Wozniak, Ross Perot, Will I Am. Duration: 1hour

Steve Jobs was a business man and a technological innovator whose resume seems beyond comprehension: co-creator of the personal computer. Co-founder of Apple. Co-founder of Pixar. iPod and iPad developer. This documentary takes on the daunting challenge of summarising his life and work. In brief chapters titled “Misfit,” “Whiz Kid,” “Innovator,” “Buddhist,” “Tyrant,” “Savior,” and

“Genius,” the filmmakers reveal the many different sides of this complicated man. We take a walk down memory lane with his close childhood friend Bill Fernandez and meet Steve Wozniak, who designed the first Apple computer under Jobs’ supervision. Steve Jobs: One Last Thing gets upclose and personal with this creative technological innovator in two segments where he is interviewed. The one which really clicks is done with Bill Gates seated next to him. They talk about their respect for each other and about the contributions they have made to the lives of computer users around the world. Designer Dean Harvey recounts how Jobs put together a model of the Apple Mouse from cans of roll-on deodorant and a plastic butter dish. Steve Jobs re-invented entire industries. He invented the personal computer. He re-invented the movie industry, the mobile phone industry, he changed the way we buy and listen to music, and finally, he re-invented the tablet market. Think of Jobs and his creations the PC, the iPod, iPhone, and iPad, not to mention the influence he had on the world of filmmaking through his innovations at Pixar, and you’ll see the global impact of his work. He is without a doubt, the most important visionary of our generation.

The Nerve Centre’s Fab Lab is a partnership with the world-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is one of the first to open in Ireland. It joins a network of similar labs around the world in exploring the possibilities of exciting new fabrication technology. The 25th Foyle Film Festival is offering the public a unique opportunity to engage with Fab Lab through this innovative workshop. There will be a short break for refreshments. PLACES AVAILABLE: 20

This is a call to shorts filmmakers in how to utilize your skills, ideas and short films in finding your audience. Opportunities for the filmmaker working in short form are expanding with the plethora of platforms available as well as the current appetite for cross platform output by the terrestrial and digital broadcasters. The festival circuit is not the only place to show your work as a shorts filmmaker and the short drama is not the only form of short film. But how do we utilize these opportunities? Using the work she made in fine art; art video; as a producer and writer/director of short films; and as a filmmaker currently making drama, music videos and fashion films, Carol Murphy will use this 2 and a half hour workshop to look at how the filmmaker can find their audience - from the festival circuit to television strands (like Random Acts on Channel 4).

Subject matter covered will include: elements of script writing; the fine art or punk aesthetic; visibility; presentation; researching; marketing on a low budget; teamwork; pitching; making applications; funding; planning your festival run; attending

YOU’VE BEEN TRUMPED NERVE CENTRE 2 DOCUMENTARY

UK.2011. Director: Anthony Baxter. Cast: Donald Trump, Anthony Baxter. Duration: 1hr.35mins.

The Director Anthony Baxter will introduce this screening and take part in a Q&A afterwards. In this David and Goliath story for the 21st century, a group of proud Scottish homeowners take on a celebrity tycoon. At stake is one of Britain’s very last stretches of wilderness. American billionaire Donald Trump has bought up hundreds of acres on the northeast coast of Scotland, best known to movie-lovers as the setting for the 1983 classic film Local Hero. And like the American oil tycoon played by Burt Lancaster, he needs to buy out a few more locals to make the deal come true. In a land swimming with golf courses, Trump

is going to build two more – alongside a 450-room hotel and 1,500 luxury homes. The trouble is, the land he has purchased occupies one of Europe’s most environmentally sensitive stretches of coast, described by one leading scientist as Scotland’s Amazon rain forest. And the handful of local residents don’t want it destroyed. After the Scottish Government overturns its own environmental laws to give Trump the green light, the stage is set for an extraordinary summer of discontent, as the bulldozers spring into action. Water and power is cut off, land disputes erupt, and some residents have thousands of tonnes of earth piled up next to their homes. Complaints go ignored by the police, who instead arrest the film’s director, Anthony Baxter. Local exasperation comes to a surreal head as the now “Dr” Trump scoops up an honorary doctorate from a local university, even as his tractors turn wild, untouched dunes into fairways. Told entirely without narration, You’ve Been Trumped captures the cultural chasm between the glamorous, jet-setting and media savvy Donald Trump and a deeply rooted Scottish community. What begins as an often amusing clash of world views grows increasingly bitter and disturbing. For the tycoon, the golf course is just another deal, with a possible billion dollar payoff. For the residents, it represents the

destruction of a globally unique landscape that has been the backdrop for their lives. Funny, inspiring and heartbreaking in turns, You’ve Been Trumped is both an entertaining, can’t-believe-it’s-true tale and an environmental parable for our celebrity driven times. A moving score features music from jónsi, the internationally acclaimed musician and frontman of Sigur Ros. The film also offers a rare and revealing glimpse of the unfiltered Donald Trump, as he considers standing as a candidate for President of the United States.

LET FURY HAVE THE HOUR NERVE CENTRE 2 DOCUMENTARY

USA.2011. Director: Antonino D’Ambrosio. Cast: John Sayles, Eve Ensler, Chuck D of Public Enemy, Billy Bragg, Lewis Black. Duration: 1hr.40mins.

The Director Antonino D’Ambrosio will introduce the documentary and take part in a post-screening discussion. In his feature directorial debut, acclaimed author, visual artist, and filmmaker Antonino D’Ambrosio has fashioned a lively social history that chronicles how a generation of artists, thinkers, and activists used their creativity - and their creations - as a response to the reactionary politics that came to define our culture

in the 1980s. This thrillingly articulate wallop of ’80s-era rage is a mixed media collage that includes graphic art, music, animation, and spoken word. The film spans three decades of change - from the cynical heyday of Reagan and Thatcher through today and includes some choice new interviews: Chuck D, John Sayles, Eve Ensler, Billy Bragg and more. This refreshing documentary also brings together over 50 writers, playwrights,

“An thrilling, explosive film that’s bold, courageous for this time and all time.” Filmmaker, Michael Moore

“It is alive in a way that I feel is essential for artists, for society, for human beings.” COOL Magazine

“A fantastic film that excites, engages, and entertains. A piece of cinema that is vital for our times.” Federic Boyer, Tribeca Film Festival

Closeup on ANTONINO D’AMBROSIO: Antonino D’Ambrosio is an author, filmmaker, visual artist, and the author of the critically acclaimed ‘A Heartbeat and A Guitar: Johnny Cash and the Making of Bitter Tears’. Legendary musician Pete Seeger described the book as “a rare work that is beautiful and inspiring”; acclaimed historian Howard Zinn calls the book an “important contribution to the cultural history of our time”; and visionary filmmaker Jim Jarmusch lauds the book as “a truly fascinating journey.” D’Ambrosio’s current book is ‘Let Fury Have the Hour: Joe Strummer, Punk and the Movement that Shook the World’. D’Ambrosio’s essays from the book inspired the film Let Fury Have the Hour. Musically, D’Ambrosio is working with Chuck D of Public Enemy, Wayne Kramer of the MC5, and Martin Perna of Antibalas on a new project. Sun 25 Nov | 10am-4pm INTRODUCTORY ‘STEREO-3D-IN-A-DAY’ WORKSHOP with Neil Richards from The Digital Film Company NERVE CENTRE Venue The 25th Foyle Film Festival has joined forces with The Digital Film Company to provide an introductory workshop in what’s set to be one of the biggest growth areas in TV and film production over the next few years. According to Neil Richards, “Up to now, stereo 3D has been the realm of big budget feature films and blue-chip TV productions, but all that is changing with the move to internet delivery and widespread use of mobile platforms for viewing. The demand for 3D content looks set to explode now that 3D TVs cost no more than conventional sets and “glasses-free” tablets, laptops and computers are becoming widespread. The technology is changing at the production and post-production end too, with the arrival of inexpensive 3D cameras, rigs,

and stereoscopic software editing now possible on Mac and PC computers. Production costs have fallen as equipment becomes cheaper and experience has been gained within the industry.” This introductory 3D workshop covers basic stereo 3D principles, terminology and human physiological constraints leading to an explanation of the factors which produce good and bad 3D viewing experiences. Stereo 3D technology, standards, cameras, displays and 3D cinema are then explained. Emphasis in the last half of the workshop is on hands-on filming with the footage reviewed live on 3D TVs. If you want to record your masterpiece, then bring a pen drive.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Industry professionals such as independent producers and directors, camera operators, DOP’s, Independent film makers and documentary TV makers. This one day workshop will also be accessible for anyone with a general interest in this rapidly emerging technology.

Sunday 25 Nov | 5pm SIDE BY SIDE The Science, Art And Impact Of Digital Film NERVE CENTRE 1 DOCUMENTARY

USA.2012 Director: Chris Kenneally. Cast: Keanu Reeves, Steven Soderbergh, James Cameron, David Lynch, Martin Scorsese, Geoffrey Gilmore, Lars von Trier, George Lucas, David Fincher, Christopher Nolan. Duration: 1hr.38mins

This screening will be introduced by Neil Richards from The Digital Film Company. For almost one hundred years there was only one way to make a movie – with film. But over the last two decades a digital process has emerged to challenge photochemical filmmaking. Keanu Reeves interviews directors, cinematographers, film students, producers, technologies, editors, and

exhibitors, as Side By Side examines all aspects of filmmaking. At this moment when digital and photochemical filmmaking co-exist, Side By Side explores what has been gained, what is lost, and what the future might bring.

“There are quarrels that are certain to be provoked by Chris Kenneally’s new documentary…which explores the impact of digital technology on 21stcentury moviemaking, but one thing is beyond argument. For a gilm geek this movie is absolute heaven…It is worth a year of film school…” A.O. Scott, New York Times

CCEA MOVING IMAGE ARTS: SCREENING & AWARDS SHOWCASE

Tues 27 Nov 10 am - 12 noon

EDWARD SCISORHANDS TOWER HOTEL CLASSIC FILM

USA.1990. Director: Tim Burton. Cast: Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest. Duration: 1hr.45mins.

Filmmaker & Lecturer, Carol Murphy will provide a special introduction to this screening, and take part in a Q&A afterwards. Edward Scissorhands tells the story of Edward; a boy discovered living alone in a dark mansion on the top of a mountain. Edward is the creation of an elderly inventor who dies before he can replace Edward’s scissorhands with conventional hands. The nurturing Peg is protective of Edward and invites him to come live with her family. One of the film’s jokes is that Peg’s job as an Avon lady makes her an outsider like Edward. Although her life on the surface resembles the rest of the town’s, she is the one who

embraces Edward and accepts his difference. The world in which Edward finds himself is a model of dull conformity and although he is initially accepted by the community, as an entertaining oddball, they cruelly reject him when things go wrong. Edward’s experience mirrors director Tim Burton’s own struggle to survive the bland, conformist world of his youth. Burton felt isolated and misunderstood, and Edward emerged as a character: “who wants to touch but can’t, who was both creative and destructive… It was the feeling that your image and how people perceive you are at odds with what is inside you.” - Tim Burton

“Depp artfully expresses the fierce longing in gentle Edward; it’s a terrific performance… Edward Scissorhands isn’t perfect. It’s something better: pure magic.” Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Tues 27 Nov 12.30pm - 2.30pm CITY OF DERRY CRYSTAL AWARDS FOR CCEA MOVING IMAGE ARTS 2012 TOWER HOTEL The 25th Foyle Film Festival continues its support for the annual CCEA showcase of the best short films from Moving Image Arts students. The Foyle Film Festival established this unique award a number of years ago with the support and sponsorship of Michael Bond from City of Derry Crystal, and this annual event has gone from strength to strength. The Foyle Film Festival presents these unique awards to students during the annual Festival in Derry/Londonderry, and also during the Cinemagic Festival in Belfast. CCEA’s Moving Image Arts is a modern and dynamic GCSE and A-Level subject that gives students the opportunity to explore and develop their creativity and digital literacy through the production of their own films and animations. The festival is delighted to once again celebrate and highlight the talent, imagination, and creativity of the MIA students by awarding the beautiful City

of Derry Crystal Awards for the best films of the year. The 2012 event will also showcase a competitive GCSE entry for the first time since the introduction of the new course in 2009. It is with a great deal of pride and pleasure that the Foyle Film Festival provides a platform for the work of these budding young filmmakers from all over Northern Ireland. The festival hopes to be accepting the work of MIA students into the Light In Motion (LIM) Competition - which is Oscar® affiliated - in the not too distant future.

NERVE CENTRE 1

THE UNDERTONES NERVE CENTRE Venue Music lover and DJ extraordinaire John Peel, who died in 2004, had one pop song that he regarded above all others. That song ‘Teenage Kicks’, the first single released by the Undertones, was played at his funeral, and its opening line - ‘Teenage dreams, so hard to beat’ - is inscribed on his gravestone. But what made John Peel - and thousands of others - think they were so special? Was it that no one would ever believe that a band from Derry could sound like they did? Influenced by the New York Dolls, the Ramones (especially), 1960s girl groups like the Shangri-Las and psychedelic outfits like the Chocolate Watch Band, was it that they were powered by the two guitars and song writing acumen of the O’Neill brothers or was it that they were a wonderful paradox: a brilliant and apparently apolitical band from one of the most political places in the seventies. A recent BBC documentary strived to answer these questions and also managed to unearth “cousin Kevin”. But the simple answer to why The Undertones have managed to maintain their

musical relevance is simply to be found on the set list from any for their live shows. Song after brilliant song hits home and reminds us why we started to listen to music in the first place. The Undertones return to the Nerve Centre on the 23rd of November to mark the 25th Foyle Film Festival on the same night as we screen the movie GOOD VIBRATIONS which charts the life story of Terri Hooley, the DJ and record store owner who was instrumental in bringing the punk movement to Belfast and launching the careers of legendary bands such as The Undertones, Rudi, and The Outcasts.
