He may call himself the funniest Egyptian oneeyed comic, but Wafik Nasralla is more than the line suggests. Whether he is on stage or letting go having a beer with friends, Nasralla is the life of the party. “It was really my brother who encouraged me to get into comedy,” Nasralla said. “I was kind of the class clown.” He took his first jump 15 years ago with a rather shaky performance where he drank too much and probably bombed. Now, after some fine tuning and some experience, Nasralla has a good idea of what material will work and what doesn’t. His dry, self-deprecating humor is an interesting mix of observational jokes and an ability to laugh at himself. One of his signature bits is explaining how he came to be blind in one eye — an accident that happened when he was 11, caused when he was wrestling with a friend and his glasses hit his eye — resulting in instant loss of vision. “It’s kind of ironic to go blind because of glasses,” he said. But whether he is joking about travel or racism, his quick wit guarantees a laugh. The 41-year-old Barrhaven resident is a celebrity in his own right, with regular shows at Yuk Yuk’s and his own special on Comedy Central last May. On Sept. 19, Nasralla was one of the acts to perform for a Help our Homeless benefit at Grace O’Malley’s on Merivale Road and he performed as part of a benefit to help Big Brothers, Big Sisters in August. “I like to give back,” he said. “Comedy has given me a lot.” See “Laughs” on page 3.

in the second period as Alexandre Perron-Fontaine and Matthew Zay scored for Pembroke and Brent Norris and Jeremy McCarthy replying for Nepean. McCarthy’s marker was his first as a Raider as came with 28 second remaining in the frame. However another goal-scoring trade-off – Matt Miller for Pembroke and Grant Telfer for Nepean – sealed the Raiders’ fate. “It was a little sluggish,” Lumber Kings centre Matthew Peca said, who finished the game with an assist. “We didn’t get the effort that we would have liked to, but we came away with the two points and that’s what matters.” With the Lumber Kings perennially being one of the CHL’s best teams, the Raiders seemed content to weather the storm and have a chance to win. Nepean lost all four games decisively to the Lumber Kings by more than three goals last year. “Just to be close against Pembroke is a positive for us,” Kowalew said. “We know we can get them. We were that close.” Raider of the game: Michel Kowalew The six-foot-one, 210-pound puck stopper was under siege during the first half of the game, but came up with many timely saves. His performance gave the red and black a chance to win late in the third.

O’Malley’s benefit doles out laughs for homeless charity From “Laughs” on page 1. Nasralla — who originally lived in the east end when his family came to Canada — loves his new home in Barrhaven. “It reminds me of what it was like when we first came here (to

Canada),” he said. “It’s like a simpler time where you don’t feel like you have to lock your doors.” Whatever he’s doing, Nasralla won’t be standing still. On the horizon is the release of a DVD and some dates on the east coast.

The Nepean Raiders fell to the fourtime defending champion Pembroke Lumber Kings in their home opener despite a never-say-die performance. But the reason they were even in the game to begin with was largely because of their goaltender. Michel Kowalew stood on his head during the first two periods of the Raiders’ 4-3 loss to the Lumber Kings at the Nepean Sportsplex on Sept. 15, facing 31 shots over that time. The Raiders then closed out their week with a 4-2 win against the Kemptville 73’s and a 3-2 overtime loss to the Cumberland Grads on Sept. 19 – both road games – extending their record to 2-1-2. Many of the Kowalew’s stops in the Pembroke game came on quality scoring chances, as the Lumber Kings had a handful of partial breaks and opportunities on the lip of the crease. “We came out a little flatter than we would have liked,” captain Craig Cowie said. From the time Brandon Gagne tapped in a pretty three-way passing play just 2:05 into the game, it looked like the flood gates were going to open. But Kowalew refused to break. “He came in last year and played big for us,” Cowie said. “He’s the reason we went that far in the playoffs. He’s

got to be big for us this year if we’re going to go anywhere.” With the Raiders shorthanded for almost half of the opening frame – thanks in large part to a questionable hitting from behind major penalty levied to forward Tanner Williams – Kowalew was tested early and often. He finished the game with 35 saves. “We have to stay out of the box a bit more,” Kowalew said. “We can’t win the game by staying on the P.K.” But their penalty killing did keep the Raiders close against the Lumber Kings. Led by Cowie and winger Scott Domenico, the Raiders killed off all five of Pembroke’s power-play opportunities. The pair not only prevented the Lumber Kings from scoring with the man advantage, but created few chances of their own. “Our power play was not very good,” Lumber Kings head coach and general manger Sheldon Keefe said. “You have to give credit to Nepean’s penalty kill for doing a good job. “We’re happy with the two points – we’ll take that – but other than that, I wasn’t very happy with our game.” Aside from their power play woes, Keefe thought his team played a sloppy game. That, coupled with Nepean’s determination, got the Raiders back in the game. The teams exchanged a pair of goals

Candidates clash over taxes, leadership at debate BLAIR EDWARDS blair.edwards@metroland.com

Larry O’Brien and Jim Watson clashed over leadership style during a mayoral candidates meeting in Kanata on Wednesday, Sept. 15. O’Brien asked voters to choose their ward councillors wisely when they head to the polls on Oct. 25. O’Brien said he has been able to forge a consensus on most issues over the past four years as mayor of the City of Ottawa. “The only area at city hall that I am looking for a majority party situation is the one that has been most closely connected to your pocketbook, and that is money – that’s the budget,” said O’Brien. “I believe that you should be very careful about the councillor choices you make.” Watson said councillors should be accountable to voters, not the mayor. “I would not want to be signing onto some pledge of allegiance to one candidate running for mayor, not knowing, a) what I am signing onto,” he said. It would be very unhealthy and not good for a democracy to have 23 people all singing from the same hymn book on every issue because they’ve signed up for one person’s party. “That’s what municipal government is all about ladies and gentlemen,” said Watson. “It’s consensus based – it’s not a party system. It’s based on an ability to get along, and that’s what leadership is all about.” More than 250 people attended the

The meeting featured 11 of the 20 candidates running for mayor of the City of Ottawa, including Robert Gauthier, Charlie Taylor, Cesar Bello, Robin Lawrance and Joseph Furtenbacher. Watson said the people of Ottawa are looking for a change in leadership. “After a difficult and often divisive four years, I believe the people of Ottawa are ready to turn the page,” said Watson. “My strength is by nature I am consensus builder, a quality that I believe is needed in the mayor’s office.” O’Brien said, “It’s very easy to reach consensus when you do nothing.” During the past four years taxes have

gone up 14 per cent, more than twice the rate of inflation, said Watson. He promised voters to cap annual tax increases at 2.5 per cent. O’Brien admitted he was unable to keep the “zero means zero” promise he made during the last election. “But I’m no quitter and I want to move forward,” he said. “It’s not like I was in the majority government position where I could have chosen to freeze taxes.” O’Brien said he wants to start each year with a budget that doesn’t call for a tax increase. MEETING Clive Doucet said the greatest problem facing the city is how it will control the costs of its growth.

He said many costs continue to increase every year, such as the cost of gas to power the city’s hundreds of buses. “The more you grow, the more it costs you,” he said. The current transportation plan won’t bring light rail to Kanata until 2031, said Doucet. “I think we need to get that light-rail service out to here in four years,” said Doucet. Watson promised to bring in a hiring freeze for all city employees except emergency services personel. Jane Scharf warned residents that O’Brien and Watson are just two sides of the same coin. “We need a real change, not just two slightly different versions of the same thing.” Andrew Haydon said transit is the main issue of the 2010 mayoral election. He said the city will pay for the $2.1-billion light-rail project using its share of federal gas tax money – leaving nothing for new transit projects over the next decade. The former mayor of Nepean said the city should instead invest in bus rapid transit. “My proposal has not been considered,” he said. If elected mayor, Mike Maguire promised to focus on providing tax relief for voters. “None of you can afford a tax increase,” he said. See “Taxes” on page 5.

QUESTIONS Members of the audience at the candidates meeting were allowed to ask questions, each directed at two candidates. Bill Coleman asked O’Brien and Wat-

son if they would support a wage and hiring freeze at city hall. Watson said his platform calls for a hiring freeze and wage freeze for senior management, councillors and the mayor. The city currently hires 300 to 400 people a year as a result of growth, said Watson. “I believe that figure is non-sustainable. O’Brien said he wants to bring in a minimum two-year wage freeze. Phil Sweetnam, a member of the Kanata Chamber of Commerce, asked

if Watson or O’Brien would commit to reducing the commercial and industrial tax rate. O’Brien and Watson both said they would not agree to reduce the tax rate relative to residential taxpayers. Near the end of the meeting, the Kourier-Standard asked O’Brien and Watson if they would reduce the size of council. Ottawa has the largest number of councillors on a per capita basis of any city with the exception of Montreal, said Watson. “Reducing the number of councillors will save money, will protect the rural

component of wards, because they are protected by the (Ontario Municipal Board), said Watson. Watson said he wanted to introduce a borough system allowing communities to make decisions on local issues. “Let’s take the local decision-making of traffic and community-centred issues and sign bylaws and so on and allow local decisions to be made by the local community, he said. “This will free up time for council to focus on big-ticket items like the budget. O’Brien said he wouldn’t reduce the number of councillors in Ottawa.

Four Schools in Eastern Ontario Profiled by EQAO Merivale High School was one of the 27 schools profiled in the E Education Quality and Accountability Office’s (EQAO’s) provincial reports. “The EQAO assessment is set up on those critical fundamental skills,” Patrick McCarthy, principalof Merivale High School said. “This process is ongoing, embedded in what we do. What we say are priorities and what

identify areas of student learning requiring further attention and support,” said Marguerite Jackson, EQAO’s chief executive officer, said in a press release. “Used together with other classroom data, EQAO results help complete the picture of student achievement and, over the years, have become an essential tool that educators across the province rely on for their improvement planning.” Some of the common factors that schools identify in addressing the literacy and numeracy needs of students are professional learning communities; data-driven decision making; a whole-school approach to literacy, numeracy and student achievement; small-group learning for literacy and numeracy; differentiated instruction; high-quality teaching; early intervention; tracking of all student progress; parental involvement; the coordination of school and board improvement planning; and implementing Ministry of Education initiatives.

EQAO says are priorities are not that different.” The provincial reports were released on Sept. 15 and four of the 27 schools are located in eastern Ontario. These schools are at various stages in their own journey of learning but all are representative of the dedicated school communities that can be found right across Ontario. They are notable for their leadership, data-driven strategies and whole-school approaches to help every child succeed. Based on their unique circumstances, each one of these schools has adopted an action plan to work toward improved student outcomes using provincial assessment results as a guide. “EQAO results allow school communities to celebrate their successes and

SEASON PASS HOLDERS’ BENEFITS

It isn’t very often lightning strikes, but Ottawa Humane Society staff is considering themselves lucky there wasn’t more damage done to the Champagne Ave building after a strike on Sept. 8. Members of the public were evacuated from the building after the lightning struck around 6:45 p.m. on Sept. 8. OHS staff had just finished the evening animal care rounds and were busy with end-ofday cleaning when the power went out, cutting the building’s air conditioning and ventilation to the animal holding wards. Staff did the best they could to ensure animal safety, and an emergency electrician was called in to assist with restoring hydro. A temporary generator was rigged up, and several staff remained on site until well after midnight to troubleshoot the security system. As the phone system was knocked offline, an OHS rescue agent worked with the City of Ottawa to ensure we could still respond to animal-related emergency calls triaged through the city’s call centre. The lightning caused the power to fail and destroyed the buildings heating and ventilation systems, along with computers and phone systems. The outage had no effect on the animals, but communications manager Tara Jackson said the damage could carry a price tag topping over several thousand dollars.

While there may be only one winning candidate, and ultimately one leader responsible for making our community a better place, there are numerous youth who do just as much, if not more, without recognition. So who are these youth and where can we find them? They are all over this community – volunteering with local groups, schools, churches and sports teams. It is just a matter of picking them out of the crowd. This newspaper strongly supports the Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards here in Nepean so we can provide recognition for such outstanding young people who are, and will continue to be, fine examples of leaders in our community. The awards program is co-coordinated by the Ontario Community Newspapers Association (OCNA), of which we are a member. Any Ontario resident aged six to 17 is eligible to receive an Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Award. Please help us by nominating an individual in one of four areas: • A person involved in worthwhile community service. • A special young person contributing to their community while living with a physical or psychological limitation. • Someone who has performed an act of heroism in the past year. • Young people who show a commitment to making life better for others and those who do more than is normally expected of someone their age. Up to 12 nominees will be chosen as the final recipients of the provincial award and will be invited to a ceremony held in Niagara Falls in the spring of 2011. Each nominee will receive a certificate. The nomination deadline for the 2010 Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards is Nov. 30. Nomination forms are available at www.ocna.org or by calling OCNA at 905-639-8720, ext 239.

The long gun registry and the illusion of democracy To the editor: It may come as some surprise, but believe it, you are not living in a democracy. Nothing exemplifies this better than a Bill like C391, an Act to repeal the long gun registry. Time and time again, polls have shown a majority of Canadians support this bill, and want to see the end of this wasteful and inefficient system. People recognize that there is no benefit on public safety and have relayed these facts to their elected representatives. In a normal functioning democracy, the elected MPs would vote as their constituents instruct. But this would never happen in Canada. Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff is so bold as to tell Canadians that their view doesn’t matter, that the only thing that matters is that his MPs vote how he tells them to. Party discipline is a prime example of the anti-democracy at place in Canada. NDP leader Jack Layton isn’t quite as arrogant and unconstitutional as Iggy. However, a number of NDPs have switched their vote on C391 since second reading, one can only imagine what other forms of influence Jack Layton is exerting on them (especially since he openly supports the LG registry). In gets better however. In Canada, it takes more than just three House and Senate votes to get a bill into law. Even after C391 passed second reading (with a major80 Colonnade Rd. ity), it then moved on to the Liberal dominated standing committee on Public Safety and National Security. Can anyone hazard a guess as to what their recommendation was? The official recommendation by the SECU was just as irrational as the lies being spread by Liberal MP Mark Holland, who coincidentally enough, is an active member on that committee. And this is how politics is played in Canada. If a party leader, or MP for that matter, does not like the outcome of a vote which represents the majority of Canadians, they have numerous tools at their disposal to usurp your constitutional power. MPs do not represent their constituents, they represent whatever their party leader tells them to represent. I equate the actions of these political leaders to that of a child who stomps their feet and cries because the other kids voted on a different game to play. The real question is, when will they grow up? When will Canada become ours again? It’s time for people to wake up and realize how bad it is to have a country run by just a few people.

LIbby played at the kitchen station, making a soup and some other plastic edibles on her first day of school. Libby’s mom thinks she is going to be a chef.

by their father. Dalton walks the five minutes to school, end up, it’s easy to see this family will stick together. but Libby will take the bus until she is in Grade 2. She sits about three rows back from the driver and even though view is obscured by the bus number on the window, she seems excited when she heads out to meet Mrs. Oldfield. The kids all line up at the front of the school and Libby is the tallest in the group — even the ones in senior kindergarten. She is decked out in a pink Minnie Mouse shirt her nana bought her, complete with pink hair clip and sweater to make the outfit. Normally Libby is really outgoing, but it is easy to tell that this milestone has made her a little shy. She keeps looking back at her mother and tires of having her photos taken pretty quickly. The two adults on hand were enlisted to hold the door for the train of four and five-year-olds on the way to their class. The kids were all done up in their best outfits, which would probably stay clean for all of five minutes. As an adult, it’s hard not to imagine having a good time in this school, with its blue hallways and murals — complete with a frontfoyer sitting area patterned after Charlotte’s Web. The Marceaus really lucked out with the school; not knowing the area made it hard to pick. “Being in the military you kind of just have to rely on write-ups and stuff because you don’t know the neighbourhood,” Michelle said. She is happy with her choice, and the students look as happy as can be on their way to class. The hallways are a sort of controlled chaos as kids make their way into their respective classrooms. The principal Andrew Canham is right in the mix, hugging one student and opening a water bottle for another. One of the braver kindergarteners walks over to him and says, “My name is Alex.” Libby hangs up her Tinkerbell backpack and Michelle helps her on with her shoes, trading one set of pink for another. She heads into the classroom and sits on the circle. “Pick your favourite colour,” Mrs. Oldfield said. Libby picked purple, she really has two favourite colours pink and purple and when the family moves into their house next week she wants her room painted half and half. Mrs. Oldfield is the perfect kindergarten teacher. It’s easy to tell she’s an old pro when one of the kids wanders away from the circle from time to time and she firmly — but gently — guides him back. The kids sing some songs and learn to identify cards with their name and picture on them. Then comes a story called Don’t Let the Pigeon Ride the Bus. The story is a read along complete with puppet and the children are captivated. “You can’t drive a busm silly penguin,” Libby said. After the book is done, the kids head to their favourite activity centres. Libby chose the kitchen. “She really loves it, I think she is going to be a nurse or a chef,” Michelle said. “Either is fine with me.” Once things wind down, Michelle leaves Libby to her own devices and heads back to the office to turn in her visitors’ badge. For the rest of the school year, Michelle and Eric will say their daily goodbyes to Libby at daycare. Everyone will get used to the new routine until Paige and then the baby will start their own school careers. Michelle and Eric hope to be able to stay in one place, but life in the military means they may have to move the kids. Wherever they 410847

Editors note: Nepean This Week reporter Jennifer McIntosh spent a day learning along with Libby Marceau on her first day of school. The Marceaus, a military family who lives in the Katimavik area, were posted to Ottawa two years ago from the East Coast. Just like one might expect, their house is spotless and their three kids — Dalton, 8, Libby, 4, and Paige, 2, — have solidly-built routines that make morning and evening activities run fairly smoothly throughout the week. Each day has a menu so there is no guesswork at dinner time about what to feed the trio of rambunctious kids, whose blond hair, blue eyes and wide smiles would melt the heart of anyone. Mixed in with this routine is a genuine love of their family and children, something Michelle and Eric will certainly pass on to the newest member of their family, due in January. Sept. 14 was a different day for Libby, who now must get used to a different routine. Libby started her first day of school at Castle Frank Elementary, where she will join Dalton. The day started early, with the kids rising just after 6 a.m. Libby had been getting up with an alarm that played music for a week prior to school to get used to getting ready in time to catch the school bus from the Katimavik Child Care Centre. “She moves like molasses,” Michelle said. On her first day of school, Eric and Michelle were willing to let her stay home a bit later before catching her bus, but after a breakfast of cinnamon and raisin bagels and a banana, she was ready to go to daycare with her brother. Libby obviously looks up to Dalton, a sweet little boy who takes good care of his sisters. He even stopped in the hall at school to give Libby a hug as she hung up her coat and put on her Barbie-patterned “inside shoes.” Drop off in the morning is complicated, with the older kids going to Katimavik Child Care Centre and Paige going to see her babysitter Doreen. The kids are loaded up in the van — complete with three car seats — Paige watches Mickey on the DVD player. Paige has been going to Doreen’s alone since July and is still getting used to the idea of being without Libby. Once Paige is dropped off Michelle heads over to Katimavik to check on the older two, who were dropped off

All-star game means local tourism, hospitality increases

See “all star” on page 15

daniel.bowman@metroland.com

With the NHL all-star game coming to Kanata in 2012, almost $30 million will be pumped into the local economy, the president and CEO of Ottawa Tourism estimates. The league announced on Sept. 15 that the 2012 game will be played at Scotiabank Place as part of the Ottawa Senators’ 20th anniversary celebrations, ending weeks of speculation. While the game will take place on Jan. 29, there will be a host of the other celebrations that begin on Jan. 26. “That’s like a convention of 2,000 people in town for three-and-a-half days,” Noel Buckley said, whose organization teamed with the Senators to help land the event. “That’s a big piece of business.” The official announcement was made at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier Hotel – a strategic location given that more than 7,000 hotel rooms should be occupied across the city during the festivities. Some activities from the traditional Winterlude celebration will be bumped ahead to coincide with the all-star weekend and create a bigger buzz. “It (normally) comes at a time when hotel occupancy and visitation to Ottawa is light,” Ottawa Gatineau Hotel Association executive director Dick Brown said. “I think the hotels in the Kanata area will be booked for sure.” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said the Senators were awarded the game based on a “compelling” bid, backed by the completion of the Convention Centre in 2011. The centre will host various events throughout the weekend. “This is a star-power announcement for the City of Ottawa,” said Steve Desroches, Gloucester-South Nepean councillor and vice-chair of the city’s corporate services committee. “It’s going to have some profound economic spin-offs. “All of this is coming about because of the infrastructure we have in this city and because of the hockey pride we’ve shown over the years.” Both Bettman and Senators owner Eugene Melnyk said the city’s ability to support large hockey

events like the 2005 and 2008 NHL Entry Drafts, the 2009 World Junior Championships, and Bell Capital Cup – an annual New Year’s minor hockey tournament – played a key role in landing the game. Those events have pumped $225 million into the economy. “The timing for hosting this event couldn’t be better,” Melnyk said, noting getting an all-star game was one of his promises he made when he bought the Sens in August 2003. “We may not be a big hockey market, but we know how to put on big hockey events. “It’s just another layer to show our fans how much we care about them. We go the extra mile and go the extra step.”

Sports be behind the bench if the Sens are atop the Eastern Conference standings well into December next season. “Any time you can stand behind the bench with the quality of players, whether it’s in the NHL level or in major junior, it’s an honour,” he said. “If that’s the case, great, but it’s not on my mind right now.” John Paddock was the last Ottawa bench boss to be named head coach at an NHL all-star game in 2008. Now that management has secured the game, they know they have a lot of work ahead. The goal is to show off the city to everyone watching and visiting. “It’ll be here before you know it,” Senators president Cyril Leeder said.

“Planning has already started and we’re very much looking forward to the opportunity to host the NHL and the rest of the hockey world in Ottawa in 2012.” Aside from the questions about the game, Bettman was grilled about the possibility of Quebec City getting an NHL team and the recent penalty levied to the New Jersey Devils for circumventing the salary cap when they signed Ilya Kovalchuk back in July.

Bettman added being a season-ticket holder would be the only way to ensure getting a seat to the game. only way to ensure getting a seat to the game. While the 2012 all-star is over a full season away, members of the Senators were on hand to ponder the possibility of being at the game. A veteran of five all-star games, captain Daniel Alfredsson said he has enjoyed his experiences and would relish a chance to play in the game on home ice. “Unfortunately you don’t get a free card to it,” Alfredsson said, who will be 39 by game day. “I’m sure everybody will give it a good effort to try and be part of it. It’s just going to be an unbelievable weekend.” Head coach Cory Clouston will only

It’s one of the staple events on the Ottawa Flying Club’s calendar, but it’s the one that brings the most joy. The club – which located right off the Ottawa Airport and neighbours Riverside South – is launching its 52nd annual Fly Day on Oct. 2, as a means to raise money for children with physical disabilities. The not-for-profit club has teamed up with the Ottawa Rotary Club since the mid-1990s to provide all of the proceeds of the event to them. “It’s the club’s opportunity to give something back to the community,” said Ottawa Flying Club vice-president Aaron Nichols. Nichols has been a part of the last 10 Fly Days as an organizer, ground controller, and even a pilot. Although days can be a bit hectic with 15 planes in actions like they’re expecting this year, Nichols said the event is worth it. “Seeing the reaction of people who’ve never been on a small plane,” he said when asked what his favourite

Forbes, who teaches grades 1 and 2 French and social studies at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School in Nepean, said she loves using the arts to make history come alive. “I’ve been passionate about Canadian history,” she said. “I love doing it through story telling and the arts.
