Their responses range from caring for their patients to discovering a cure for life-threatening illnesses to holding national leadership roles to serving their communities. But they shared a path to pursuing their passion that led them all to Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). Established in 1973, NEOMED is a community-based, public university that provides interprofessional training of health professionals. The University is home to a College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy and College of Graduate Studies. ACCREDITATION Northeast Ohio Medical University, a public institution established in 1973, is fully accredited through the North Central Association (NCA). The Doctor of Medicine degree offered by the College of Medicine is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), which is a joint committee of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Medical Association (AMA). EDUCATION All lecture halls offer state-of-the-art lecture capture systems that record the instructor and all visuals associated with the lecture, which are then available to students for study purposes.

RESEARCH FACILITIES

Through the William G. Wasson, M.D., Center for Clinical Skills Training, Assessment and Scholarship, students have the opportunity to develop clinical and communication skills through simulated activities. A 130-station Multidisciplinary Lab is fully automated and allows students from all three colleges to meet as one, learning side-by-side. RESEARCH The four story, 100,000-square-foot Research and Graduate Education Building includes state-of-the-art open biomedical laboratories to support collaborative research along with sophisticated core facilities. NEOMED CAMPUS NEOMED EDUCATION AND WELLNESS CENTER The NEOMED Education and Wellness (NEW) Center, opening fall 2014, will offer NEOMED students, faculty, staff and the surrounding community the opportunity to pursue holistic wellness goals at their convenience through fitness facilities, healthy eatery and café services, retail pharmacy, physician offices and more. The Center will be home to Sequoia Wellness, a 25,000square-foot wellness center for campus complete with: • spacious fitness floor • lap and warm-water therapy pools • multi-use basketball court • free weight areas • group exercise classes • rock climbing wall • steam rooms, saunas and whirlpool In addition to wellness facilities, the Center will house the University’s new auditorium, student lounge and student space, the University’s Conference & Event Center, and Bio-Med Science Academy, the rural, public STEM+M high school on NEOMED’s campus.

STUDENT LIFE If you thought you knew what campus life was like at NEOMED, think again. The University boasts more than 70 student organizations, ranging from student government to honor societies to interest groups to social groups. Service learning is an integral part of both curricular and extra-curricular activities. Student organizations fulfill their annual service requirement by participating in a number of fundraisers and events each year. NEOMED’s newly renovated courtyard offers students a beautiful commons area to gather, study, exercise and relax in between classes. Students can find spaces for individual or group study all around campus. The Giant Eagle Commons includes individual study carrels with whiteboards, desks, overhead lighting and comfortable chairs in addition to rooms built for group collaboration. COLLEGE OF MEDICINE Northeast Ohio Medical University’s Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree curriculum is designed to develop the characteristics that people want to see in their physicians: competence, communication, caring, curiosity, character and a commitment to community. The four-year curriculum fuses the behavioral, biological, clinical, community health and social sciences with the humanities. Students are grounded in the complex interplay of these disciplines as they pertain to patient care and health outcomes. FIRST YEAR (M1) Students concentrate on the basic courses essential to the understanding of the science of medicine. Students will have their first encounter with patients through preceptor experiences and learn how to conduct effective medical interviews in the longitudinal Doctoring course. SECOND YEAR (M2) Students spend their second year bridging from the classroom and laboratory to clinical settings. A study of body system modules will allow you to concentrate on basic pathophysiology processes and the mechanisms underlying clinical signs and disease.

THIRD YEAR (M3) Students complete a traditional clerkship year that includes six core required clinical rotations in family medicine, psychiatry, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, internal medicine and surgery. FOURTH YEAR (M4) Students design their own curricula based upon personal educational and career priorities. Over the year, you will take at least six electives, each one month in length, as well as Clinical Epilogue and Capstone, which is the synthesis of four years of education. CLINICAL FACILITIES Northeast Ohio Medical University’s clinical teaching facilities include 24 associated hospitals (providing approximately 7,000 teaching beds and staffing more than 2,500 clinical faculty members), a range of private and corporate pharmacies and five health departments. WHAT IS PRIMARY CARE ? Primary care is the health care given by a health care provider, usually as the initial point of consultation. These individuals (physician, pharmacist, physicians assistant or nurse) often refer the patient to other specialists that are needed. Primary care physicians focus on comprehensive and continuous care for the patient’s physical and mental well-being. When additional treatments or diagnoses are needed, it is the primary care physician who coordinates with consulting physicians in order to improve and maintain the patient’s care and understanding of his or her illness.

ACCELERATED B.S./M.D. DEGREE PROGRAM The College of Medicine has the oldest accelerated combined degree program in the state of Ohio and one of only 18 accelerated programs in the nation. Students apply to the program during their senior year of high school and, upon admission, enjoy the benefits of having a reserved seat in the College of Medicine when they begin their college program. They earn a combined Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine (B.S./M.D.) degree in only six or seven years.

During the undergraduate portion of the pathway, students take premedical course work at an accelerated pace of two or three years at one of three university partners: The University of Akron, Kent State University or Youngstown State University. NEOMED’s main campus is centrally located to all three universities, less than 35 miles from each.

Only those students who will complete high school, but have not yet earned college credit after graduating from high school, may be considered for the combined B.S./M.D. degree program. Students who earn college credits while in high school are eligible.

Classes are attended full time on one of these campuses, including summers, during undergraduate education. Students have vacations between semesters, in the spring and during the winter holidays. To see the specific courses that each school requires BACCALAUREATE/M.D. DEGREE PROGRAMS In order to meet the ever-growing primary health care needs of the region, NEOMED has developed partnerships with Cleveland State University (CSU) and Hiram College to establish baccalaureate to M.D. pathway programs. The focus of these pathways is strategically aligned with the mission of all institutions, including NEOMED’s commitment to primary care, medically underserved populations and diversity in health care. There will be five seats reserved in the College of Medicine for the Hiram partnership and up to 35 reserved seats for the CSU partnership, in conjunction with the PostBaccalaureate/M.D. degree program. Students in the CSU pathway will complete an undergraduate curriculum that will include

POST-BACCALAUREATE/M.D. DEGREE PROGRAM Most post-baccalaureate programs offer courses that prepare individuals for entrance to a medical school or strengthen the student’s transcript. The NEOMED-CSU Partnership offers students in the PostBaccalaureate/M.D. program the necessary pre-medical courses and a reserved seat in the College of Medicine at NEOMED. Students will complete a Bachelor of Science degree in health sciences with an urban health concentration at CSU prior to matriculating to NEOMED. The two-year postbaccalaureate curriculum at CSU will also include urban health courses and seminars.

ELIGIBILITY In order to be eligible for the PostBaccalaureate/M.D. pathway, students must hold a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. accredited college or university upon entry into the program. Academically, students must have a 3.00 college GPA or 300 GRE score (minimum 150 in each section) or 21 MCAT total score (minimum of 7 in each section).

COLLEGE OF PHARMACY The College of Pharmacy offers an original and progressive curriculum that blends classroom and practice experiences to give graduates the knowledge, skills and professionalism that is necessary to succeed as a pharmacist. Student-centered learning is a critical component; at least 30 percent of pharmacy courses are offered through active learning exercises. The pharmacy curriculum emphasizes the University’s core values of competence, communication, caring, curiosity, character and community, and uniquely offers an education that optimizes interprofessional learning experiences. Pharmacy and medicine students learn together in a blend of classes, which results in extensive contact between the two student bodies. The curriculum is organized to give each year a central theme that serves as a foundation for each successive year. Courses are developed and integrated to establish the annual theme to allow students to learn information in the classroom, apply that knowledge and practice pharmacy skills in experiential sites.

YEAR 1 THEME: DOSAGE FORMS The year one theme of dosage forms provides you with knowledge and experience to: 1) select appropriate dosage forms for a given situation, 2) research the availability of dosage forms and 3) compound individualized dosage forms. A series of foundational science courses during the year will provide a strong base on which to build your pharmacy knowledge.You will also be exposed to various pharmacy practice settings (chain pharmacy, independent pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, specialty settings, etc.).

YEAR 3 THEME: PATIENT SAFETY The year three theme of patient safety provides students an understanding of existing federal laws and their application in the practice setting and further develops knowledge and skills needed to design the optimal therapeutic regimen for a disease or situation and to monitor and report less than optimal outcomes (adverse events, medication errors, noncompliance, etc.) based on the best available evidence. Experiences in class and in practice settings in year three will prepare you to enter full-time patient contact in year four where you will share in the care of and decisions concerning patients.

YEAR 2 THEME: MEDICATION USE SYSTEM The year two theme of medication use systems provides knowledge and insight into managing pharmacy duties and personnel, dispensing medications safely and recognizing the importance of pharmacology, biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics when selecting the correct dosage regimen and formulation for the patient.You will utilize this knowledge during practice site visits.You will also become certified in several skills, including administering immunizations and Medication Therapy Management (MTM) services. Interaction with medicine students will continue with a comprehensive self-directed interprofessional team project.

YEAR 4 THEME: PATIENT-CENTERED CARE The year four theme of patient-centered care provides an extensive exposure to direct patient care at ambulatory care, acute care, community pharmacy and health-system pharmacy settings in which you influence the decisionmaking and outcomes of therapeutic management of disease conditions. The fourth year will end with a Pharmacy Capstone designed to assist you with the transition to becoming a licensed pharmacist and the next stages of your professional lives.

PHARM.D. DEGREE PROGRAM The mission of the College of Pharmacy is to prepare highly skilled pharmacists who play an indispensable role in a team-oriented approach to patient care and medication therapy management services. Our graduates will emerge as competent, curious, caring pharmacists with strong communication skills, character, commitment to the community and dedication to lifelong learning. ELIGIBILITY Academically, at least a 2.50 overall college GPA is required of all applicants. Applicants for admission to the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree program must complete at least two years of pre-professional coursework, earning a minimum of 72 semester hours or 105 quarter hours. A bachelor’s degree is not required, but students with a degree may be considered more competitive in the application process. For more information, visit www.neomed.edu/ admissions/pharmd. APPLICATION PROCESS Students apply by completing the Pharmacy College Application Service (PharmCAS) application as early as June 1 of the year preceding anticipated enrollment in the College of Pharmacy. The student must then also complete the NEOMED-specific supplemental application found at apply.neomed.edu. PCAT scores should be sent directly to PharmCAS. PARTNER UNIVERSITIES The College of Pharmacy has agreements with more than 16 colleges and universities for preferential admissions and interviews and also accepts applicants from other institutions through “at large” application review. Students from the four core partner institutions (The University of Akron, Cleveland State University, Kent State University and Youngstown State University) will receive preferential admission. COLLEGE OF GRADUATE STUDIES The College of Graduate Studies offers master’s and doctoral degree programs and certificate programs through the University and in partnership with NEOMED’s university partners. BIOETHICS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM As medical science and technology continues to advance, there is an increasing concern over professional and ethical responsibilities in providing optimal care to patients and their families, and addressing issues among colleagues and institutions including, but not limited to, effective utilization of scarce or limited resources, disclosure of conflicts of interest, balancing health care delivery with clinical research, and developing therapeutic relationships in light of controversial public health policies and laws. This certificate program is designed for health care professionals and students who have the desire to explore these pragmatic issues through the lenses of ethical theory and narrative-driven humanities. INTEGRATED PHARMACEUTICAL MEDICINE Integrated pharmaceutical medicine is the scientific discipline concerned with the discovery, development, formulation, delivery, pharmacologic and toxicologic evaluation, registration and scientific monitoring of drug | 20

entities for the benefit of the public health. This program will provide graduate students interested in entering careers in the pharmaceutical industry and academia with an excellent, integrated pharmaceutical medicine graduate education at the master’s and doctoral degree levels. The Master of Science (M.S.) degree option requires a total of 45 credit hours (including 10 hours of pharmaceutical medicine research and 10 hours of thesis work) culminating in a written thesis and thesis defense. The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree option requires a total of 90 credit hours culminating in a written dissertation and dissertation defense.

MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH Administered by NEOMED, the Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree is a consortium program with The University of Akron, Cleveland State University, Ohio University and Youngstown State University. This nontraditional program is geared toward working professionals and students who would like to broaden their role in improving community health, especially in this changing health care environment. Courses are delivered through a hybrid of teaching methods: interactive videoconferencing, online asynchronous lectures and face-to-face instruction. Core courses are taught on Saturdays to accommodate working students.

HEALTH-SYSTEM PHARMACY ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM This program is designed for those who wish to build on their clinical competence to develop administrative, ďŹ nancial and leadership skills related to health-system administration, which will enable them to manage complex health-system pharmacy departments at the institutional and department levels. The combined M.S. degree/residency program requires 40 semester hours and must be completed in two years. The M.S. degree only track may be completed in two to four years. The curriculum includes courses provided through the NEOMED College of Pharmacy and courses provided in the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) curriculum through the Cleveland State University Monte Ahuja College of Business. Students may complete a teaching certiďŹ cate program offered by the NEOMED College of Pharmacy.

BIOETHICS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM This nine credit program, which can be acquired in nine months to two years, is ideal for the busy student or health care professional who wishes to combine clinical practice with ethics consultation, education and research. Students take coursework in the areas of ethical, social and legal issues facing professionals in the health sciences. ELIGIBILITY Students who have successfully completed a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of a 3.00 GPA and a strong desire to enroll in ethics and humanities coursework are eligible to apply to the Bioethics CertiďŹ cate Program.

INTEGRATED PHARMACEUTICAL MEDICINE DEGREE PROGRAM The main objective of the integrated pharmaceutical medicine degree program is to educate and develop first-rate scholars and independent investigators within an integrated curriculum. Graduates of this program will have a unique perspective on the linkage of pharmaceutical sciences to medical disciplines, especially with regard to disease mechanisms and targets for therapeutic interventions. ELIGIBILITY Students must hold a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in the majors of chemistry, biochemistry, any of the biological sciences, or related areas, or a combination of majors such as for a pre-pharmacy or pre-medicine baccalaureate. Academically, at least a 3.00 undergraduate GPA and/or a 3.30 graduate GPA is required. MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH DEGREE PROGRAM This program provides graduates with a foundation of public health skills and knowledge, including analytic skills, research strategies, community assessment methods, program implementation, evaluation and

policy development within an ethical and culturally sensitive perspective. ELIGIBILITY Students must hold a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. accredited college or university upon entry into the program. Academically, students must have a 2.75 undergraduate GPA or 3.00 graduate GPA and an acceptable GRE score. HEALTH-SYSTEM PHARMACY ADMINISTRATION DEGREE PROGRAM The health-system pharmacy administration degree program offers two tracks: a combined Master of Science (M.S.) degree/residency or an M.S. degree only. Both tracks are designed for individuals who wish to build on their professional competence and enable them to manage complex health-system pharmacy departments at the institutional and department levels. ELIGIBILITY Students must have a Pharm.D. degree and either be a licensed pharmacist or be eligible for licensure. Three years of practice experience is required for M.S. degree only students. Academically, students must have a 2.75 undergraduate GPA or submit an acceptable GMAT score. | 23


GET STARTED EARLY

High school students who are interested in pursuing a career in health care can become involved in one or more of our educational and enrichment programs: HealthSuccess, MEDCAMP, Pathways to Pharmacy or Health Professions AfďŹ nity Community. These highly competitive programs exist for students in the eighth through twelfth grade and seek to increase diverse representation at the colleges and within health care professions. HealthSuccess is a nine-month program for ninth through eleventh grade students. The program is held monthly throughout the academic year and strives to better prepare prospective medicine or pharmacy students for professional education through their participation in various activities and workshops. MEDCAMP is a three-day intensive summer experience designed for students who are completing the eighth grade and rising into the ninth grade in the fall. This program is coordinated through Area Health Education Center (AHEC). Pathways to Pharmacy is a summer program for high school sophomores and juniors, offering work-based learning experiences, personal development workshops and math and science enrichment activities. The program provides an opportunity to expand student interest in the pharmacy profession and increase the number of students who graduate from high school and pursue pharmacy as a career. The program is generously sponsored by Walgreens. The Health Professions AfďŹ nity Community (HPAC) program is designed to support and guide ninth to twelfth graders who have an interest in extending their connection to, and preparing for, a career in the health professions. HPAC is a partnership amongst schools and community organizations and offers a host of academic and communitybased experiences with the aim of empowering students to take charge of their academic and career development and make a difference in the health of their communities. FINANCIAL AID Many ďŹ nancial aid opportunities are available. The Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy are able to provide institutional funds to students who demonstrate high need. Students who provide parent information on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may be eligible for campusbased aid in the form of institutional loans and grants. Students are also encouraged to use scholarship search engines on the Internet and to contact professional societies, organizations, foundations, unions, companies, religious organizations, sororities, fraternities, etc. about scholarship opportunities. Federal Stafford loans at higher graduate loan limits are available to students. Students are eligible for the unsubsidized loan ($40,500 for medicine students, $33,000 for pharmacy/ M.P.H. students, $20,500 for other graduate programs) in which interest of 6.21 percent begins to accrue when the loan is disbursed. Federal GradPLUS loans are available at a higher interest rate of 7.21 percent if a student has maximized his/her Federal Stafford loan eligibility.
