o help with navigation around Ferry Meadows, a RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) Map for All (a map designed to be read by sight and touch) has been installed outside the Discovery Den Education Centre and Lakeside. We hope the map will make a real difference for the visually impaired as we continue our work to make the Park as accessible as possible.

pringtime in Nene Park is always a pleasure - all that colour and freshness. The colours, sounds and smells of spring are captured so well in John Clare’s poem “Early Spring”: The Spring is come, and Spring flowers coming too, The crocus, patty kay, the rich hearts’ ease; The polyanthus peeps with blebs of dew, And daisy flowers; the buds swell on the trees; While oer the odd flowers swim grandfather bees In the old homestead rests the cottage cow; The dogs sit on their haunches near the pail, The least one to the stranger growls ‘bow wow,’ Then hurries to the door and cocks his tail, To knaw the unfinished bone; the placid cow Looks oer the gate; the thresher’s lumping flail Is all the noise the spring encounters now.

John Clare

At the time of writing, there is a feeling of anticipation in the air – the new Badger Play area will be a fabulous addition when it opens in April. The Ranger Team have been incredibly busy working on landscaping for the miniature railway, tree planting and fencing. We are also looking forward to the improvements at Ferry Meadows Café, Lakeside Kitchen & Bar and at Nene Outdoors, where a new team will be offering a fantastic range of water sports and outdoor activities (see pages 4 and 5). As a stand-alone charity responsible for a large area of valuable and increasingly well used green space and facilities, we are entrusted with the difficult task of funding the maintenance and improvements which we all enjoy. To do this the Trust is seeking out and implementing innovative

ways to increase the quantity and quality of the resources it is able to call on. This year we will increase our fundraising activity by applying for more grants and sponsorship and by developing more partnerships. We have also introduced parking charges all day, every day (see page 6) at Ferry Meadows and Orton Meadows – the receipts from which will be reinvested in the Park. We are also looking for more opportunities to work with you, our community. A great example are our brilliant and dedicated volunteers who do an amazing job in supporting our work across the Park. Much of our winter has been spent looking at what Peterborough, the Park and the Trust might look like in the future (see page 11). This exercise is helping us to develop our new ten-year strategy which we hope to complete this year. We have also been looking at our past through a project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, called The Untold Story (see page 12). An incredibly interesting project involving many of the people involved in the creation and development of the Park during the 1970s and 80s. Pick up a leaflet and enjoy the trail in Ferry Meadows and watch the fascinating film which features people instrumental in the development of the Park and Nene Park Trust. It just remains for me to say, have a wonderful spring and I hope you enjoy all the Park has to offer at this special time of year. Matthew Bradbury Chief Executive, Nene Park Trust

Lakeside @ Ferry Meadows

L

akeside opened its doors in April 2014 to provide a hub for activity and relaxation. The centre has really added to the offer available to all visitors.

Nene Outdoors Watersports and Activity Centre, Rutland Cycling cycle hire and Lakeside Kitchen & Bar are all housed at Lakeside, which also provides a base for Sailability, Lakeside Sailing Club, Packers Canoe Club, Nene Bowmen and Vivacity’s adapted cycling scheme. This spring will see some exciting new developments at Lakeside. Nene Outdoors Watersports and Activity Centre Following a temporary closure, Nene Outdoors Watersports and Activity Centre reopened in March with our team taking over the management. We hope to build on the core water sports offered and link this with our existing outdoor education, Forest Schools and events and activities programme. It is a really exciting opportunity to develop Nene Outdoors as a hub for outdoor activities in the region. The centre is already a great place to enjoy water sports and as we look to the future we aim to develop a great range of land based activities to add to the offer. To celebrate the reopening of the centre Nene Outdoors will be holding a Family Fun Day on Sunday 22nd May. There will be plenty of instructors on hand to help you, so why not come along and try out something new. Please check the Nene Park Trust website for further details. Rutland Cycling From Easter, Rutland Cycling’s cycle hire centre opens at weekends and during school holidays and offers a wide range of hire bikes for adults and children, including tandems, kids’ trailers and child seats. This year, Rutland have partnered with local artist, Karen Neale, to produce a Ferry Meadows cycling map. The map will contain two new traffic-free routes for cyclists: the 4-mile Family Trail and a 7.5-mile Boathouse Trail.

Rutland are also working in partnership with Lakeside Kitchen & Bar to offer a cyclists’ picnic (including a basket and blanket) which can be ordered along with cycle hire. Lakeside Kitchen & Bar Lakeside Kitchen & Bar offer freshly cooked and locally sourced food. The fantastic menu has a range of options including a full English breakfast, the Lakeside homemade burger, Club sandwiches, cold snacks and a variety of side dishes and kids’ meals. The stunning venue overlooks Gunwade Lake and has recently undergone a full refurbishment to offer a relaxing, stylish place to eat, drink or enjoy a coffee. Teresa Wood Head of Visitor Services Lakeside Kitchen & Bar is also an ideal location for events and competitive rates are offered for all occasions including weddings, birthday parties and corporate events. To hire this beautiful venue exclusively for your event see www.lakesidekitchenandbar.com or call 01733 233218.

Parking Update

R

evised parking charges came into effect in Ferry Meadows Country Park and Orton Meadows at the beginning of March. Finance Director, Phil Rolfe, explains the new system and the reason for making the changes. Q: Why are you introducing all day, every day parking charges? Visitor numbers to Nene Park have increased by 50% over the past twenty years and the Trust has worked hard to ensure the recreational opportunities on offer in the Park have grown to meet this increased demand. As a charity, with no funding from taxpayers, additional income needs to be secured to continue to invest in the Park. This comes at a time when the requirement for maintaining and renewing the Park’s infrastructure continues to rise. The Trust is looking at many different ways of generating additional revenue. A key component is the introduction of a new system of parking charges at Ferry Meadows and Orton Meadows. Q: How will the additional revenue be spent? The additional revenue that we expect to generate will help fund the costs of maintaining and improving the Park, keeping it clean and tidy and continuing to provide our much appreciated Duty Ranger service. Q: How does the new system work? Whilst the new parking tariffs apply all day, every day, the charge is dependent upon your length of stay, which we think is much fairer than the former flat rate charge

6

at Ferry Meadows. The system is being operated on behalf of the Trust by Park with Ease Limited. You do not need to pay for parking on arrival and no ticket is required. Number plate recognition cameras record your entry time and calculate the fee owed. You have the option to pay by cash or card at one of the pay machines by entering your vehicle registration number when you are ready to leave, or paying online up to 48 hours after your visit at www.parkwithease.co.uk. Full details of the new tariffs are available on our website. Q: Is there a discount for regular visitors? If you visit Ferry Meadows regularly our new Parking Membership provides excellent value for money at £60 per year. If you visit just once a week, that works out at around £1.15 per visit. At Orton Meadows free parking is available for customers of the Orton Meadows Golf and Pitch & Putt, Rutland Cycling and The Granary by providing your vehicle registration details to staff before leaving. For more details on the new parking charge arrangements please pop into Ferry Meadows Visitor Centre or visit our website. Phil Rolfe Finance Director

New Face on the Board Cllr Graham Casey As a local Councillor I was delighted to have been invited to join the Board of Nene Park Trust. Ferry Meadows is virtually on my doorstep and I am looking forward to playing a part in its development as the City continues to grow and move forward. I moved to Peterborough nearly 30 years ago. One of my first memories of the City was the view of the river, the railway, the rowing lake and the green open landscape as viewed from the Nene Parkway. Since then I have had many adventures with my family within the Park and I truly appreciate what a wonderful facility we have.

New Faces at the Trust Kristine Heaton Education & Events Assistant I am very excited to be joining the Education and Events team. I cannot wait to get started in exploring and discovering the Park and getting people involved in interacting with nature and the outdoors. Whatever the weather or season, there’s always something new to find. Coming from a background in outdoor education and bushcraft, I am keen to put my knowledge and skills to use in giving schools and visitors the opportunity to explore the Park in new ways. I am very much looking forward to the time ahead at Nene Park Trust.

Philip Goodley Education & Events Assistant Having just started at the Trust this February, I am looking forward to working in such a beautiful environment. My experiences and background features outdoor education, teaching and customer service. Helping others to learn and doing so in such a great place is something I have wanted to do for some time. I hope to combine my experiences to deliver the best sessions I can in my role as an Education and Events Assistant. Growing up in South Lincolnshire I have fond memories of family day trips to the Park and no doubt I will soon have more to add to those from my childhood.

Emma Wood Visitor Centre Assistant I joined Nene Park Trust in January as a Visitor Centre Assistant. Over the last three years I have gained a vast amount of knowledge about the Park and its visitors through my previous employment within the Park cafés. I have always enjoyed visiting Ferry Meadows from a young age and have fond memories of picnics, long walks and playing on the pirate ship with my sister and grandparents. I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead and making your visit more enjoyable!

Matthew Butler Visitor Centre Assistant I have worked at Nene Park Trust in the Visitor Centre for the past two years as a seasonal member of staff. Recently, this has been made permanent. I have gained a vast amount of knowledge about the Park and enjoy seeing visitors spend time in the Park. I am looking forward to the new challenges ahead and working as part of such a great team. One of the aspects of my job which I really enjoy is assisting with events such as Tree Climbing for Kids and Going on a Bear Hunt which are great fun.

ene Park Trust is shaping the future of the Park for the next thirty years. What would you like to see in your Park in the future?

Peterborough’s population is rapidly expanding and the number of Park visitors is increasing every year. To ensure that the Park can meet this future demand, as well protecting the landscape and wildlife, we are producing a new Park Master Plan. The Master Plan will include the new facilities which will be needed, along with new structures and landscape features. Many features of the Park, such as bridges, paths and buildings are requiring critical repair and improvement in order to provide for the current and future increases in visitor numbers. The Untold Story project on page 12 has been well timed as we have looked back at the Park’s history to help shape its future. This Heritage Lottery Funded project has been inspiring, giving current Trust staff the opportunity to hear the vision of the Park’s creators from the 1970s. Their vision to create a park for the people of Peterborough in the natural landscape of the Nene River Valley is still just as valid today. We now also need to consider issues such as climate change, flood water management and loss of wildlife species and habitats. The Trust recognises what an important job it is to plan the Park for the next thirty years, so SLR Consulting have been assisting the Trust. They have an excellent record of carrying out similar work at other locations. Combining their experience with the local knowledge of Board Trustees and staff has stimulated much discussion and many ideas.

In the spring, sessions will be held with tenants, local organisations and volunteers to gain their comments and ideas on the draft plan. A public session will be held which is open to anyone with an interest in the Park on 14 April at 1pm to 3pm in the John Horrell Room next to the Visitor Centre. You can also keep an eye on the website for updates. Clare Freeman Head of Landscape SPRING SUMMER

id you know that over 50% of Peterborough’s population were not even born when the Park opened to the public in 1978? Many visitors also find it a surprise to learn that the lakes are a result of gravel extraction and were not naturally formed.

The Untold Story project gave us the opportunity to tell many tales from the Park’s past. Read on to find out how we have told these stories. LISTEN: A series of interviews were recorded with people directly involved in both creating and developing the Park. The interviews are available from Peterborough’s Archive Service based in Peterborough Library. SEE: A short film, produced by local film-maker Martyn Moore, is available on our website and YouTube channel. Project partners Vivacity are also kindly hosting a small exhibition in Squire’s Coffee House at Peterborough Museum showing more images from the Park’s past. EXPLORE: Discover how Nene Park has changed through the decades. Memories and photos have been used to create an outdoor trail at Ferry Meadows. Pick up a leaflet at the Visitor Centre which will guide you to the panels. DISCOVER: Historical documents held by Nene Park Trust have been digitally scanned and placed with Peterborough’s Archive Service based in Peterborough Library. LEARN: Packs for schools will soon be available. 12

Partnerships for Wildlife

T

hrough the support of our many different partners, funders and volunteers we have been able to make real improvements to the Park for both people and wildlife. “Peterborough is Buzzing” is a National Lottery funded project led by Buglife, a national charity which champions invertebrates. The project aim is to turn areas across the city, including areas of Nene Park, into species rich wildflower meadows for the benefit of many species of insect. An extra £1000 was also kindly donated by The Chapman Charitable Trust towards creating an additional hectare of wildflower meadow on Oak Meadow in Ferry Meadows. Buglife have also been busy carrying out habitat assessments of Nene Park. These provide us with management advice for making sites better for wildlife and for looking at which additional species the Park could support. In 2014, Froglife, a national reptile and amphibian charity based in the city, undertook a reptile survey of Thorpe Meadows and Orton Staunch. Last year this survey concentrated on Ferry Meadows and next year they will be looking at the rural estate. The survey showed how important the site is for Grass Snakes and also discovered an otherwise unknown population of Common Lizard. Now that we know where these animals live we can manage the habitat to help them. This year we will be continuing to work with Froglife on the Nene Dragon Finder Project which creates habitats for amphibians and reptiles while also benefiting other wildlife. Last year, we hosted the first Wildlife Festival in the Park to celebrate the wildlife of the city. This was a weeklong series of events led by many different partners culminating in a finale event. The event did a great job of raising awareness of the many conservation groups working in the area and the wildlife that they champion. Nene Park Trust has had a long association with the Peterborough Bird Club (PBC). Many of their members have been visiting the Park since before its creation. Besides sponsoring the bird feeders in Ham Mere, PBC members also undertake regular Wetland Bird Surveys in the Park as part of a nationwide survey of water birds. This data helps the Trust understand the importance of the Park for these birds. Cambridgeshire Bat Group led a guided walk as well as a Beginning with Bats Training Workshop. They also recorded several species of bat including the rare migratory Nathusius’ Pipistrelle (only the second record for the Park). Other specialist surveys included the Environment Agency’s Fish Survey of Lynch Lake which highlighted the presence of Spined Loach. A species found in only six river systems in eastern England.

A large part of the survey work that was undertaken was funded by a generous donation from the Jack Paxston Charitable Trust and with a new fundraiser soon to be in post, this will open up new doors and exciting opportunities for making Nene Park an even better place for both people and wildlife. ene Park Trust is delighted to be part of the Nenescape Landscape Partnership which will see exciting projects happening in and around Peterborough over the next six years. Through a series of projects in the Nene Valley, from Northampton to Peterborough, Nenescape will build knowledge and understanding of the landscape and its history. It will also improve the visitor experience through improved access and interpretation to heritage sites, and reduce threats and negative impacts on heritage. Amanda Johnson has been appointed as the Nenescape Project Development Manager. Amanda will be visiting Nene Park in her first month to meet all the community groups and local charities whose ideas have helped to shape the projects. Amanda has been working in Wellingborough and knows the Nene Valley well and is really looking forward to helping partners and community groups to deliver their ideas on the ground. Nenescape is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the Landscape Partnership programme. Funding has been secured for the next 18 months of the development phase in which projects will be further worked up. An earmarked grant of ÂŁ2.8m from the Heritage Lottery Fund will help

achieve a well-managed, understood and appreciated landscape that tells tales of times gone by; inspires a sense of adventure; is easy to explore; rich in wildlife, and resilient to the pressures of on-going population growth. Projects happening in Peterborough this year will include re-enactments at Ferry Meadows and archaeological surveys of the Scheduled Ancient Monument at Ferry Meadows. Keep an eye out in the Park for more information. Over the next few years there will be many opportunities for local people to be involved in shaping the projects and learning new skills. We look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas at future events.
