History of Seaham Red Star

S

eaham Red Star are named after the pub in which they were formed. A Sunday morning side in 1973, they are now widely regarded as one of the Northern League’s leading clubs. Much of the credit for the Club’s early development belongs to Ralph Pigg, the initial Secretary, and Larry Phillips, the Club’s first Manager. The pair, supported by a small committee, entered a side in the Houghton and District League and, after a promising first season, made a successful application to join the Northern Alliance League in 1974. After a further five fairly successful seasons, the Club felt sufficiently confident to join the then highly competitive Wearside League in 1979. This confidence was soon justified, the Club winning the Durham Challenge Cup in 1980 and the League and League Cup “double” in 198182. In 1983, they were elected to the Northern League Second Division and , after some near misses, eventually gained promotion to the First Division in the 1987-88 season. Bryan Mayhew took over as Chairman of the Club in 1986 and, with able support from former Secretaries, Harry Hobson and John McBeth and a small hardworking committee – in particular Reg Atkinson, Dave Copeland, Jim Ferguson and John Smith – the Club enjoyed First Division status for an unbroken fourteen seasons. Notable successes during this period, included finishing third in 1993-4, winning the League Cup in 1992-3 and, after leading the table for most of the season, finishing second in 1999/2000. Mayhew was also a prime mover in getting the League to join the National Pyramid, calling the Special General Meeting of clubs

which eventually led to the historic decision being made. Just two years after finishing runners-up in the First Division, the Club suffered its first ever relegation in its near thirty years history. Even worse was to follow when, as a result of dwindling committee support, officials took the reluctant step of tendering the Club’s resignation from the League. However, following a positive response from a number of local people keen to see the Club continue, a new committee was formed under the chairmanship of John Smith and the resignation was withdrawn. The Club’s re-introduction to Division 2 at the start of 2002/3 got off to an unpromising start but, after bringing in Neil Hixon as Manager, the Star failed by the narrowest of margins to gain an immediate return to Division 1. Unfortunately for the Club, Neil’s achievements resulted in him being snapped up by Durham City shortly after the start of last season, effectively putting our promotion aspirations on hold for at least another year. However, with experienced Northern League manager Peter Mulcaster steadying the ship, the Club finished in a respectable mid-table position. Neil Hixon returned as manager in 2005 and along with Stuart Gooden and former Sunderland & Scotish International George Herd put together a side that won promotion back to the First Division in the 2006/07 season. The following season Hixon & Herd moved to Sunderland RCA and Gooden took over the team which finished in a creditable 8th place in the table. The following season saw yet another

3 change in management with former Darlington player Andy Toman taking over. Another dip in club fortunes saw the side face relegation. The 2010/11 and 2011/12 were two of the worst seasons in the Red Star history with the team involved in relegation battles which could have seen the club relegated to the Wearside League, both battles were successful and the club retained it’s Northern League status. In the summer of 2011/12 the club appointed Mark Collingwood who had achieved great success at Northern Alliance Premier Divison side Hebburn Reyrolle FC, this Season manager Mark Collingwood appointed Chris McCabe as player/assistant manager. Previous managers in the Club’s history include Northern League legend Paul Walker, in conjunction with the long serving Chris Copeland; former Hartlepool Manager, Billy Horner; and ex Burnley player, Harry Wilson. Former players going on to join Football League clubs include Nigel Gleghorn (Ipswich and Manchester City), Bobby Davison (Halifax, Derby and Leeds) and Stephen Harper (currently with Newcastle United). Tommy Henderson remains the Club’s leading goalscorer, netting 211 goals in 276 appearances including a record breaking 62 in 1978-9. Honours: Phillips Floodlighting Competition winners 1978-79; Durham Challenge Cup winners 1979-80; Wearside League champions 1981-82; Wearside League Cup winners 1981-2; Northern League 2nd Div runners up 198788; Northern League Cup winners 1992-93; Northern League 1st Div runners up 1999-2000, Northern League 2nd Div Runners Up 2006-07.

irstly I would like to wish all the players, supporters and club officials from Gateshead FC a very warm welcome to Seaham Town Park this evening, I hope you enjoy your time here and have a safe journey home. Tonight we host Conference Premier side Gateshead FC, a side that narrowly missed out on promotion to the football league after reaching the play off final and narrowly losing to Cambridge United. As a club we are delighted to host such a fantastic club here at Seaham Town Park this evening. As for ourselves we have had a quiet summer in comparison to some other Northern League clubs, four players have left us during the summer and four new players have been added to the squad, Conor Winter, Lewis Wing, Josh Allan have left the club for pastures new, last season’s top goalscorer Adam Johnston has decided to call it a day and has retired at the age of 35. The planning for this season was in place prior to last seasons end, Crook town duo David Gordon who is a left full back and Craig Price who plays in the centre midfield was the first players to join The Star this summer, centre forward Sonny Andrews has been signed from Spennymoor Town to fill the void left by Adam Johnston’s retirement and young striker Grant Pressling has also joined the clubs squad from Wearside League Jarrow FC, our aim as a club is simple - to gain promotion to the EBAC First Division, hopefully these new additions will help us achieve this goal. New club chairman Joe Scollen has been hard at work securing new sponsorship as well as various other tasks, he hasn’t had a day off since

View from the Dugout he joined the club, club volunteer Jim Ferguson has been working around the clock building the new Seaham Red Star FC Supporters Club that should soon be completed, the time, effort, dedication and work that Jim has put in to the project has been unbelievable, he is a true gent and a absolute diamond of a man, one in a million in my opinion. Our pre-season schedule is a tough but necessary one as we look to improve on last season’s fourth place finish, tonight will no doubt be an eye opener for the majority of our squad, hopefully the squad will enjoy the experience and give a good account of themselves. Anyway I hope enjoy this evenings match,

Colly.

Gateshead History

T

he original Gateshead AFC was formed in 1930 when neighbours South Shields, members of the Football League’s old Third Division North, moved to Gateshead because of financial difficulties. The newly formed ‘Tynesiders’ almost capitalised immediately on their good fortune when only Lincoln City’s superior goal average denied them promotion to the second division in just their second season of League football. However, it was to be the FA Cup that was to provide the club with its finest hour when cup fever gripped the Tyneside town in 1953. After accounting for Liverpool in the third round, Gateshead progressed to the quarter-final only for their Wembley aspirations to be denied by a single Nat Lofthouse goal for eventual finalists Bolton Wanderers. A sell-out Redheugh Park crowd of 17,692 had witnessed the spectacle, but within five years the North Easterners were founder members of the newly formed Fourth Division after they missed the cut for the Third Division by just one point. Despite an average placing of 9th in 21 Third Division North campaigns, interrupted by the second world war, two years after the introduction of the Fourth Division came Gateshead’s shock dismissal from the Football League. The club had applied for re-election only once before in a relatively successful 30-year period, but were unceremoniously cast aside in favour of the more geographically favourable Peterborough United in 1960. Gateshead had finished third bottom with both Oldham Athletic and Hartlepools United below them, but polled only 18 votes and were unjustly voted out of the League. An unsuc-

cessful bid to join the Scottish Football League was followed by a brief spell in the Northern Counties League and then six years in North Regional League. In 1968 Gateshead became founder members of the Northern Premier League, but their stay in the new competition lasted only two years.Their place was, ironically, taken by another demoted Football League outfit, Bradford Park Avenue, and Gateshead were forced to replace their own reserve side in the Wearside League. Finishing as runners-up the Tynesiders then had two seasons in the Midland League until in 1973, seven leagues and 43 years after its inception, Gateshead AFC ceased to exist. A new club called Gateshead Town played the following season in the local Northern Combination League but, astonishingly, history was soon to repeat itself. South Shields, then members of the Northern Premier League, sold their Simonside headquarters and moved to a new home at Gateshead Stadium. Renamed Gateshead United the club soon became a force in the Northern Premier League while accounting for Football League clubs Grimsby Town and Crewe Alexandra in the FA Cup. However, in 1977, after only three years of operation, came the shock announcement that United were to disband - the third body blow to hit Gateshead supporters inside two decades. It looked like the end of senior football in the town until another phoenix, this time in the form of the currentGateshead FC, rose from the ashes in

7 1977. Replacing Gateshead United in the Northern Premier League for the 1977-78 season the new club won the Championship in 1983 with a record 100 points and 114 goals. After two years in the Conference, the Tynesiders returned to the Northern Premier League and lifted the title for the second time in 1986. Their second spell in the Conference lasted just one season, though they were quick to bounce back, and reclaimed their place at the top table of non-league football in 1990. The accustomed role of top flight strugglers was transformed with 7th and 5th place finishes in successive campaigns, 1994/95 and 1995/96, as well as three quarter-final appearances in the FA Trophy in four seasons. A productive period ended in 1998 when the club was relegated back to the Northern Premier League after eight consecutive seasons of Conference football. The Heed’s very existence was then threatened early in the new millennium when long-time sponsors Cameron Hall Developments pulled out. Relegation to the Northern Premier League 1st division followed but, after one season, Gateshead were back in the NPL top tier following the introduction of a geographically split 1st division. The future for a club with a proud, if somewhat chequered, past took a turn for the better when wealthy Gateshead-born businessman, Graham Wood, took over in 2006. Gateshead finished third in the UniBond Premier division, NPL, in 2007-8 when they were joint-top goalscorers in the top ten divisions of senior English football, including the Premiership and Football League. Gateshead struck 93 league goals and beat Buxton 2-0 in the play-off

final in front of a four figure crowd at the International Stadium Back-to-back promotions were achieved when the rejuvenated Tynesiders claimed runners-up spot in the Conference North, where they finished joint-top scorers with 81 goals. Gateshead beat AFC Telford United 1-0 in the Conference North play-off final in front of a 4,000 plus crowd on Tyneside to reach the Conference Premier. The first campaign back in non-league’s elite division, 2009/10, proved to be a difficult one with top flight status only retained on the final day of the season on goal difference. Gateshead then marked the 50th anniversary of their harsh expulsion from the Football League by again becoming a full-time professional club in 2010. The following season brought a 14th place finish and a place in the semi-final of the FA Trophy for the first time, the Heed then finishing 8th in 2011/12 while reaching the last eight of the Trophy. The next campaign, however, saw chronic pitch problems at the International Stadium, which resulted in half of their home games being staged at seven different grounds - and 17th place in the table. Last season, however, Gateshead recorded their highest placing in English Football since their Football League days and reached Wembley for the first time in their 84-year history. The Heed finished third and attracted their biggest crowd for a competitive game at the International Stadium, 8,202, for the play-off semi-final second-leg win over Grimsby. They had reached the Conference Premier playoffs for the first time, but hopes of reclaiming League status after more then five decades ended at Wembley in front of a near 20,000 crowd in May. Gateshead lost the Conference Premier Promotion Final 2-1 against Cambridge United - and will now look to go one better in 2014/15.

A Familiar Start to the Season For Red Star’s Darryll Donnelly

S

eaham Red Star boss Mark Collingwood certainly loves a tough preseason schedule. Gateshead, West Auckland, Ashington, Synners, Shildon, & Newcastle Benfield all visit Seaham Town Park. A testing month for all at the club. For Darryll Donnelly however the game tonight has a familiar ring after facing the Heed last preseason for Blyth Spartans. A tough start yes but Darryll wouldn’t have it any other way. QUESTION: Are you looking forward to the game tonight Darryll ? ANSWER: Who wouldn’t be, it’s a chance to test yourself against players who almost made it to the Football League last season. QUESTION: You faced Gateshead last season for Blyth, how was that? ANSWER: It was tough, like any professional side the keep the ball and make you work hard to get it back, but we had lots of possession and matched them for long periods.

in the right areas and we have also brought in some good young players. We are stronger both on and off the park, but I actually think NL2 will be tougher this year so for having tough games preseason puts everyone in the right frame of mind for what is ahead.

QUESTION: You marked James Marwood in that game last season. Are you glad not to be facing him tonight after his move to the SPL? ANSWER: To be fair I had a pretty good game against him last year. I would back myself against anyone. That’s not arrogance; I just don’t think there is no point in playing if you don’t think you are going to get the better of your opponent whoever it is.

QUESTION: How did you find your first season at Seaham Red Star? ANSWER: Obviously I was gutted that we just missed out on promotion. We deserved to go up but didn’t. I had been on loan here after a knee injury 2 seasons ago and enjoyed my time here. First and foremost I needed to start enjoying football again after having t tough 6 months at Blyth so joining Colly and Seaham was an easy decision. I love the club, the committee have been great with me and the management and lads are top class. Seaham are a NL1 club with NL1 players, so hopefully we can achieve NL1 status this year.

QUESTION: The boss has put together a testing pre-season. Do you think that will help you achieve your goals this year? ANSWER: Colly has Tadge have strengthened

ell, here we go again, hope you’ve all had a nice break from the nonleague scene watching the World Cup. I’m still enjoying my vacation and unfortunately will miss tonight’s massive pre-season friendly against Gateshead. A lot of work was done by the management team at the end of last season and prior to my going on holiday, in getting the majority of last season’s players to re-sign for the coming campaign. Three established Northern League players in Craig Price, David Gordon and Sonny Andrews were added as summer signings to give the squad extra quality for the challenge ahead. Whilst away I’m not a hundred per cent certain of any more activity from Mark and Chris but I’m sure they will be working hard, if they feel any more players are required before the start of the season.

Tonight’s fixture is a massive scoop for the Star and we were pleased to accept the fixture when it was put to us in early June. The playing surface at the Star was the main factor in Gateshead wanting to come to Seaham Town Park, and we have to thank the ground staff for their efforts in making this game a possibility so early in the summer. Following tonight’s game we have another five games before the season starts, all against top class opposition from the Northern League First Divison. Ashington, West Auckland, Billingham Synthonia, Shildon and Newcastle Benfield will all be massive tests for the Star but no doubt will be a great spectacle for our supporters.
