Front row seats for eclipse Set your sights on the skies this weekend, as New Zealand is set to have front row seats to a spectacular total lunar eclipse. Although the Earth experiences two lunar eclipses every year, a total lunar eclipse is significantly less common. During a total lunar eclipse the moon passes completely into the Earth’s shadow and, due to the direct sunlight being blocked, the refracted beams make the moon appear red. Only the night side of the planet

will be able to witness this phenomenon, with the moon entering the Earth’s outer shadow at 12.30am NZST on December 11. The most breathtaking views will be between around 3.06am and 3.57am, as it passes through the full shadow, with the moon in the deepest shadow at 3.32am, according to the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand website. The next total lunar eclipse that will be visible in New Zealand will be in 2014.
