Nelson man wins tennis crown

Nelson Bay’s tennis Veteran Steve Molnar took out the double at the 2012 Tennis Seniors NZ National Championships that took place in Tauranga over the weekend. Steve, competing in the 65 plus age group category and seeded 4th, cruised through to the final without dropping a set, knocking out second seed Graeme Thompson 6-2, 6-2 in the semi-finals. Steve then met top seed and his doubles partner David Hawkes in the final. Steve took a while to get going and dropped the first set 2-6, but then

found form and took out the remaining two sets 6-4, 6-3 and subsequently, the title. Steve and David seeded number one in the doubles, had a tight semi-final battle against Laurie Greene and Allan Dickey but pulled out a strong performance in the third set to take the match 6-3 6-7 6-3. In the final they met second seeds John Cook and Graeme Thompson and it was to be another tough three set encounter. Steve and David dropped the first set 3-6, but took full control in the next two sets winning 6-1, 6-3. Perched at the top of the Twenty20 ladder, a tight weekend has seen Athletic College Old Boys edge one step closer to their first final spot since returning as a club this season. A one-run loss to Wakatu and a super over victory against Waimea Toi Toi United means ACOB sit equal with Stoke/Nayland, just needing one win this weekend to secure a date at Saxton Oval in two weeks time. Both ACOB and WTTU finished with 127 runs and needing just three off their super over, Marty Kain rocketed the first ball over the

boundary. ACOB have the home field advantage this weekend, and coach Garry MacDonald says making a final in any of the three forms of the game would have been deemed a success since the club’s return. “These [next games] are basically semi finals, that’s what we’re treating it as,” he says. “The two-day campaign we were basically just getting to know each other. But we’ve got it now - well we think we have. One of my goals is that I was hoping to make the final, especially our first year in.”

Visitor boats win local regatta

Nelson boat Blackout leads the pack during the final day of racing outside Nelson Haven last week. Photo: Andrew Board. Yachts from Wellington and Picton pipped local crews to win the Nelson Regatta last week. Thirty two entries were split into two divisions for the regatta, with Mike Vining's Nefertiti winning the first division and Brent Dewhurst's Gucci winning the second division. The best of the local racers were

Robert Greenwood's crew on Wild Oats and Kevin Skelton's Oldsmobile, finishing second and third respectively in the first division. Owen Patterson's Fourth Dimension finished second in the second division. Racing was split into four days, starting with America's Cupstyle racing just on the other side of the Boulder Bank.

Day two saw the fleet race to Torrent Bay in 18 knot sea breezes. The following day was racing from Torrent Bay to Tonga Island and back before heading back to Nelson. The final day of racing emulated the first, with can races just outside Nelson Haven. This was the third time the regatta has been held.
