Art expo to highlight local talent The Tasman Visual Art Group's annual summer exhibition keeps getting bigger with this weekend's fifth edition at the Richmond Town Hall featuring almost 200 works. Group member Averill Moore says the popular exhibition has been well supported by their 70 members who have entered some amazing works. Although the majority of entries are paintings Averill says there will also be a range of crafts including ceramics, felt work and candle holders. “We have a summer and winter exhibition and each year we are getting more people exhibiting,” Averill says. “This is our fifth summer exhibition and it looks like being our biggest yet.” In addition to the two exhibitions, Averill says group members meet every Wednesday for a “plain air” painting session. Tuesday November 19 The 1080 aerial drop and ground operation around Nelson and Tasman hills that has locals up in arms over their access to local forestry for hunting and walking is due to cease in the next week. Signs will remain at areas that have been baited with the poison but forestry users are reminded that they should be aware of the poisoning risk to their pets from eating baits or scavenging possum carcasses. An additional operation will be baited this Friday in the Old Sow area, near Dart River, the Wangapeka River and Tadmor Valley.

Tuesday November 5 The local man being asked to pay a power bill overlooked by Contact Energy for five years, to the tune of $4952.79, has consulted a lawyer after the power company labelled him a "liability", recommended he raid his Kiwisaver retirement fund and refused to budge on the timeframe in which he can pay it back. He's been inundated with support and feedback, with one local resident ringing Contact up herself to tell them what she thought, and others offering to help him take it further. After a busy year of serving up the best Chinese in town, Bill and Michelle Lam are gearing up for the festive season at their local restaurant Eastern Cuisine. Now is the best time to book your Christmas function or end of year party at Eastern Cuisine, get in ahead of the rush. They have introduced a brand new variety of set menus for Banquet dinners catering for two or more people. And for December only you will save 10% on your total bill when you dine in the restaurant. It’s been an action packed year for Bill, who recently took on two additional chefs to help him keep up with the demand of the busy restaurant. Now open six days, things are getting busier and busier, so having two new team members on board has made a big difference. Having a bigger team on board means that Eastern Cuisine are well equipped to handle large parties within the restaurant. While the revamped Christmas menu has many new tasty items, the old favourites are still there. The dining room fits anywhere between 60 to 80 people comfortably and anything goes when it comes to keeping your guests happy. Whether you are celebrating the end of a busy year at work, having a large number of guests over and don’t want to cook or you need to cater to something more formal like a wedding function, Bill and Michelle can help you plan the perfect party. There are a range of menu options available to
suit any number of people or budget, whether you prefer to do a set menu or order ahead for the entire table, nothing is too hard to cater to. Bill has the full selection of Chinese favourites available including Peking Duck, which is an incredibly popular dish both within the Chinese community and Chinese food lovers. Bill will need a day or twos notice if you wish to order Peking Duck as it is prepared traditionally. There is also a superb selection of local NZ wines, beers and a variety of spirits. The Christmas decorations are up and Bill is now taking bookings for end of year functions or parties, but don’t forget that in addition to sit down dining, Eastern Cuisine offers two different takeaway options. One is a handy self-service smorgasbord for lunches and dinners, a handy option where you can simply choose the dishes you want from the available options at the buffet. The other option is the more than 90 different meal options on the restaurant menu also available to takeaway, so you can still order your old favourites and specialty dishes, but enjoy the convenience of having your meal to-go. Whether you want to dine in with friends or family, or you want the traditionally prepared Chinese takeaway, call in to Eastern Cuisine, open six days Tuesday to Sunday at 275 Queen St. Phone 03 544 3132 to talk to Bill about catering to your crowd.
