Nelson hip-hop’s favourite son, The Kurnel MC, is heading off to the UK so he’s throwing a farewell party at Smith’s Ford this Saturday to celebrate. The Kurnel, or as he is known by his family and friends, Luke Epapara, is well known amongst Nelsonians for his half-time displays at the Nelson Giants games, his career with Master Pilot and more recently, fronting the Kenbe La anthem to fundraise for earthquake-torn Haiti. Luke will be moving to Bournemouth on the South Coast of England with his wife Karen and their two kids. The main reason behind the shift will be meeting his wife’s family. Karen is from England. “She’s been living out here ten years and we’ve got two kids now and there’s a whole other half of the family to go over and meet,” he says. But of course, secondly,

Luke hopes the move will boost his music career. “It’s just time to go out and see the world really. I haven’t done an O.E or anything like that so this is a prime opportunity to do that with the kids. I’ve got some good contacts over there with my music so hopefully I can tap into those.” The owners of the Maitai Valley Motorcamp came up with the idea about throwing the farewell gig. It will feature some of the region’s top artists in the genre. “There’s some dope Nelson acts playing so it’s going to be great playing with the crew I’ve got to know all these years,” says Luke who will also perform. There will be free buses running to the event and there is a bar on site. The concert is R18 and there is B.Y.O although glass is not allowed. Tickets can be purchased from Everyman Records for $20. Door sales will be $30.

• Another navy vessel the HMNZS Manawanui arrived last weekend. The Manawanui is a navy dive ship for research and search and rescue. • A Russian ice breaker arrived for an extended period. Four container vessels, three regular callers and one being 202 metres long kept the stevedores busy along with a big car carrier, the first of the fruit vessels for the season, and a tanker kept the port busy. 13 fishing vessels moving around the port kept the marine operations team busy. • The new by-laws are out for consultation again so if you have an interest in boating and safety of craft in the Nelson region be sure to check them at www.nelsoncitycouncil.govt.nz. Take particular note that this edition of the by-laws includes the penalties we have often spoken about. Council and I are very interested in ensuring education with regard to the possible penalties. So please take the time to review the bylaw and express your thoughts by submission to council by March 30. If in doubt, don’t go out, Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

Volunteers needed for Sri Lanka project After 26 years of civil war the people of Sri Lanka will be getting a hand rebuilding their homes, thanks to a group of Nelsonians. Led by Julian Shields, a Habitat for Humanity team from Nelson will help build homes in parts of Sri Lanka this August, along with other teams from all over the world. But they are looking for more volunteers to join them. Julian says anyone can take part. “I’m looking for 13 companions and one builder to join my team. We will work alongside the family recipients of the house we help to build.” Julian Shields, of Habitat for Humanity, at its current build- To find out more call Julian on ing site in Nelson South.
