SPORT Nelson teams progress in Chatham Cup Phillip Rollo The party invitations said to meet at the Wakefield Recreation Ground, but FC Nelson was the only team celebrating on Saturday, sealing a 2-0 victory in the first round of the ASB Chatham Cup. The beauty of England’s FA Cup is pitting lower league minnows against some of the world’s powerhouses. While New Zealand doesn’t have the same footballing riches as the UK, a team featuring the bulk of the Nelson Pine Industries division one leaders FC Nelson Sprig & Fern squaring off against a group of battlers from the Nelson Pine Industries division two was the biggest gulf you’d see in these parts of the world. But any difference on paper was purely that, as a vocal Wakefield side sniffed an upset in New Zealand’s oldest football competition. It was the first time in the Chatham Cup’s 85 year history that a team from Wakefield was entered. FC Nelson, combining the best of FC Nelson Sprig & Fern and FC Nelson Fuji Xerox, were in just their second year together as a merged club. Team Wellington striker Henry Fa’arado sat out this match, unable to play any of the knockout football until he has played at least twice in the league. But it was his partner in crime, Solomon Island Under-23 international Moffat Kilifa that

opened the scoring in the first half. Wakefield played well in patches, defended their hearts out, but didn’t offer much on attack. FC Nelson, on the other hand, squandered a handful of chances, the majority of them created by pacy winger Davi Maciel. Wakefield entered the Chatham Cup to prove it could match it with the sides in the division above, and during the entire 90 minutes it did exactly that. Even when Neil Connell scored FC Nelson’s second, buoyed on by a bumper crowd Wakefield created two key chances that could have seen it peg level late in the second half. Sean Parkes saw his second half penalty attempt saved; a chance that could have killed off the match. But it was the rock-solid defence from Ant Sonnemann and Sam Miller, combined with some key saves from shot stopper Jan Kovac that sealed qualification into the next round. FC Nelson coach Steve Bignall will now get his second chance in as many years to unlock the defence of AMI Nelson Suburbs in the second round, after the Mainland Premier League crushed eightman Richmond Athletic 8-0 at Saxton Field on Sunday in the round’s other local derby. The next round will be held on Queen’s Birthday Weekend. The venue is yet to be announced.
