Swimmers slash personal bests Ninety-four swimmers from the region competed at the Christmas Ribbon swim meet on Saturday hosted by the Tasman Swim Club at the Nayland Pool. The Tasman Swim Club, formerly the Nelson Swimming Club, has recently changed its name to more accurately reflect that the majority of its swimmers are based and train at the ASB Aquatic Centre in Richmond, and to also remove the confusion that exists with another similarly named club the Nelson South Swimming Club. There were four standout swimmers at the meet who all swim for the host club. David Price, 14, led the way by recording an impressive seven personal best times from all of his races, including slashing a huge 90 seconds off his 1500m freestyle and almost 15 seconds off his 200m breaststroke time. Cassandra Hagan, 12, not to be outdone also recorded seven PBs from seven races and she took an impressive 32 seconds off her 800m freestyle time, and added icing to the cake by making NZ Junior Champs qualifying times in the 100m and 200m freestyle. Kaleb Johnston, 12 recorded four PBs from four races including the biggest PB of the meet as he smashed 93 seconds off his 1500m freestyle time while Xavier Anderson, also 12, rounded off the four stand-out swimmers also recording four PBs, taking a massive 60 seconds off his 400m freestyle time. The Nelson South Swimming Club entered 25 swimmers and the standout swimmer was Joe Banner, 13, who claimed four PBs from five races. Jet Persico, 12, also from Nelson South swam well to record three PBs and knocked four seconds off his 200m breaststroke time. Gabrielle Hannen, 14, was another Nelson South swimmer to impress as she slashed 19 seconds off her 400m freestyle best time. One of Nelson South’s top nationally ranked swimmers, Eddie Neill, 16, broke the Nelson-Marlborough regional record for 16 year old boys in the 400m Medley taking the record off his older brother Fraser. Waimea Swimming Club entered 17 swimmers and the swimmers to impress were Oliver Stark, 11, and RubyLou Stuart, 11, who both swam very well to record four PBs each from six races. Oliver took six seconds off his 200m freestyle best time while RubyLou dropped her 200m Medley best time by seven seconds. Competitors from Motueka and Golden Bay were also in attendance. Overall there were eight Nelson–Marlborough regional age group records broken at the meet, and the host Tas-
man Swim Club scored seven of those records. Sam Mckenzie broke three of the 14 year old records for boys in the 50m, 200m and the 1500m freestyle which has stood since 1993, Talya Harwood broke the 14 year old girls record in the 800m freestyle which has stood since 1994, Madisen Stanley broke the 17 year old girls record in the 800m freestyle, Kaine Ransby broke the 17 year old boys record in the 1500m freestyle while new club member Thomas Heaton, who has recently transferred up from Otago, broke the 15 year old boys record in the 1500m freestyle which has stood since 1994.
