Dancing to a new shoe-fitting tune

The Harbour Master’s

diary

• Four container ships, a cement carrier, a car carrier, fertiliser, seven large fishing vessel movements, several smaller ones, an American super yacht at the coastal berth, a log ship, and a large oil rig tender all made for a busy week. • There were incidents when some smaller vessels decided to race the larger ship through the cut. This has been identified as a major risk to all vessels. Please avoid entering the cut or getting within 500m of the large vessels as they navigate the port. • The police have confirmed there were two serious incidents last week where they were advised of kayakers in difficulty. Once again I wish to pass on this department’s thanks to them and those involved in the retrieval or rescue. Both incidents could have had very different outcomes. • Tahunanui Beach – Last week a fourth black and white buoy has been placed near Rocks Rd/Magazine Point. The black and white buoys clearly mark the designated area from the shore to the buoys, is for swimmers only. Motorised craft, except surf rescue, are not allowed inside the black buoys. • Non motorised craft (kayaks, ding) are only allowed to exit or enter the area in a straight line access way from the Rocks Rd side of the new buoy to the beach in front of the circular car park. • Last week we were also subject to some very strong winds and big seas. It was with surprise that I saw some smaller vessels approach the cut with the clear intention of “going out”. I was very pleased to see them think better of it. Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

Few people think twice about putting on shoes, so spare a thought for Sonia Malpas who is consistently doing so. Sonia, of Atawhai, has recently completed a bronze level certificate towards a diploma in Pointe Shoe Fitting – a system to fit ballet shoes on dancers’ feet. Little is known about the system in New Zealand but it is popular in Europe and the United Kingdom, where its inventor Esther Juon originates from. Now Esther is joining her Nelson apprentice this week to help spread the word. The system encourages support higher up the foot of dancers, not just around the toes. The system is now used in well known ballet companies including the Bolshoi, the Renaissance, the London Ballet and the New Zealand School of Dance. Sonia says she got into ballet shoe fitting after her daughter became involved in ballet and a chance encounter with Esther, who is now living in New Zealand. “She assessed my daughter’s feet and her old pointe shoes. She educated us in a way that never before had we been able to gain access to such information. It made perfect sense to me with my qualifications in biomechanics and as a parent; and it made perfect sense to my daughter as a

Esther and Sonia are hosting a workshop for parents and dancers this Friday, 11 March from 7pm at the Peta Spooner Academy of Dance.
