Zumba instructor carrying extra load

Health Board to restructure

Being six months pregnant hasn’t stopped instructor Valmai Palatchie doing what she loves, Zumba. The only change to her class is a pre-warning to new members that if they think she is getting bigger, it’s not that the class isn’t working, she is in fact pregnant. Valmai teaches Zumba on Monday nights at the Suburban Club and at the Golden Lodge bed and breakfast on Thursday nights. She has always had a love for dancing and music, so the combination of Zumba was something she jumped at. Valmai and her friends were involved in doing Zumba and it became a regular once a week thing, before more people started coming along and she took the role of instructing. “I’ve always loved dancing since I was young. I was just doing it for the fun of it. More people started hearing about it,” Valmai says. Valmai was two months into her pregnancy before she found out and immediately stopped Zumba and went to the doctor. But she was itching to get back on her feet and on the Zumba floor, and after being given the green light from her doctor, Valmai was back instructing. “If you’re already previously fit before you get pregnant then you should be fine. The doctor said just don’t do more of it.” Since carrying on with Zumba, Valmai has not felt any more strain and says it’s actually more fun. The baby has even picked up on the routine. “It stops moving and sits there. But as soon as I turn on the music I feel a few kicks.” She says she will stop when she feels uncomfortable, which she hopes she doesn’t. But otherwise she will only stop when she is in hospital giving birth and the first week of motherhood. Valmai encourages any other women, who are pregnant and being active, to have regular checkups with their doctor. Especially if they are not previously fit. The class has become much closer due to the pregnancy and have enjoyed watching the stages. “It’s like a little community we’ve got going on.” With her mother stressing that the pregnancy could occur in the middle of a Zumba lesson, Valmai is not nervous. WORKING OUT FOR TWO: Zumba instructor Valmai “You get to know the feeling of your body, and nothing Palatchie is still taking Zumba classes despite being six unusual has come up yet. If it does, you have to be responmonths pregnant, Photo: Phillip Rollo. sible and stop.”

Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB) is underway on a significant restructure, intended to improve support for frontline clinical activities, it announced last week. The proposed reorganisation comes from the recent executive leadership team restructure as well as from measures highlighted in recent draft Rutherford Initiative reports. Nelson Marlborough DHB staff can make submissions on a range of recommended changes. Chief executive, John Peters says the proposed changes represent a significant restructure for the way the DHB functions and affect a large number of staff. He says he will consider staff feedback before decisions are made. “I would like to thank all staff for their continued professionalism during this time of change, which in some cases started with the redevelopment of the leadership team last year. “These proposals outline the way these directorates of surgical medical, clinical services support, community based services, and Marlborough Services will be resourced and managed to improve their ability to support front line clinical activities. The process incorporated Rutherford Initiative where it made sense to do so. “The proposals aim to make operational reporting lines clearer and clarify roles and responsibilities giving the service directors and general managers the opportunity to work more strategically.” The Rutherford Initiative began 18 months ago in response to the changing economic climate. The name of the initiative comes from the Lord Rutherford quote: “We haven’t got the money, so we’ve got to think”. Under the initiative, staff, external experts and management are brought together to find smarter ways of working to find $20m worth of savings and efficiencies from annual revenue of $391m. This is the level of savings necessary for the DHB to break even in 2012/13 financial year. The DHB has already identified $7m in savings.
