ShuttleCork 2024 Catalog

Page 1

Hello, Friends!

Welcome to ShuttleCork: The Art of the Soirée, 2024!

We have much to celebrate tonight. It doesn’t seem possible we are now beginning our second decade of the museum’s biggest annual fundraiser. The explosive growth of ShuttleCork can be attributed to you and your steadfast support. I thank you for your loyalty to the Nelson-Atkins. It is because of you that we are able to welcome hundreds of schoolchildren to the museum each year to nurture the beginning of their relationship with the arts. Education and community programs are central to the museum’s mission, and your generosity makes them possible.

My deepest gratitude goes to Mary Bloch. Without her tenacity, leadership, and vision, ShuttleCork would be a mere shadow of the glittering event we have before us tonight. She has guided ShuttleCork from the very beginning, founding the event with Paul DeBruce, and we are indebted to her as well as to her co-chair, Mark O’Connell, who is also a member of the museum’s Board of Trustees. Mary, Mark, and the entire committee have spent countless hours planning this incredible fundraiser, and tonight we celebrate their hard work.

We will hear much tonight about pairings, but there is no better pairing than fine wine and fine art. We are fortunate that both are in abundance on this magical evening. There is a reason ShuttleCork has grown to be one of the biggest annual fundraisers in Kansas City. It is a fabulous multi-day event featuring mouth-watering delights created by Kansas City’s top chefs along with uniquely exquisite offerings from superb winemakers. It activates all our senses while bringing together old friends and new. I am extremely grateful to all of you for your support of the museum and its programs.

Now it is time to savor fine wine, sample tasty bites, and raise your paddles high and often as we bid on unique auction items at ShuttleCork: The Art of the Soirée. I toast each of you and look forward to another vibrant year at the Nelson-Atkins.

İSalud!

2 JULIÁN ZUGAZAGOITIA

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 11th annual ShuttleCork: The Art of the Soirée! It hardly seems possible that this amazing fundraiser is now more than a decade old. What began as an evening of savoring fine wine to benefit the Nelson-Atkins has grown into a multi-day powerhouse fundraiser that is consistently named one of the top in Kansas City. During that time, ShuttleCork has raised more than $12 million to further the mission of the Nelson-Atkins through art education and community programs.

This evening of fine wine, sumptuous food, and world-class art would not be possible without the devotion of so many contributors. A special thanks to former co-chair (and co-founder) Paul DeBruce, and former cochair Greg Maday. Their enthusiasm and commitment to the museum is an inspiration.

We express our deep appreciation to our fabulous Corporate Sponsors, particularly Bank of America, which has generously been our Presenting Sponsor since ShuttleCork’s inception. Heartfelt thanks to our many committee members and numerous others who have worked diligently to ensure the success of this two-evening event. We are also grateful to the generous Winemaker Dinner hosts, past and present, who graciously invited guests into their lovely homes.

We hope to pique your interest with the unique auction items described on the following pages. And finally, we thank each and every one of you for your passionate support of ShuttleCork and the Nelson-Atkins.

Cheers,

Meet our Auctioneer

GREG QUIROGA

STELLAR FUNDRAISING AUCTIONS

Greg Quiroga is our auctioneer tonight, and he is excited to be back for his ninth ShuttleCork! Greg’s been with us so long he remembers a time when the Chiefs hadn’t beaten his beloved 49ers in the Super Bowl. Twice.

Based in San Francisco, Greg has been conducting fundraising auctions for non-profit organizations across the United States since 2004. He works with over 50 nonprofits, schools, foundations, arts organizations, and charities to help raise tens of millions of dollars each year.

Known for his passion and wit, Greg brings an exciting rhythm to his fundraising auctions. “Every bid tonight is an act of support for The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art,” says Greg. “I’m honored to be the conduit for that generosity.”

The founder of Stellar Fundraising Auctions (www.StellarSF.com), Greg and his wife live in San Francisco with their son, Ryder, whose favorite baseball player remains Madison Bumgarner (if you recall, Bumgarner was the Giants pitcher who shut out the Royals in the 2014 World Series — the year before the Royals took the crown).

SWEETEN THE DEAL: DESSERT WINE LOT

Win a classic array of some of the wine world’s rarest fare: dessert wines. Their rarity (and high cost) is due to how they’re made. Unlike other wines made from full, ripe berries, dessert wines come from overripe or shriveled grapes, ultimately requiring 50 times more berry weight to produce. The result is an amazing balance of high sugar content and bracing acidity.

Kansas City’s finest cellars have packed this lot with an exquisite selection, including Vintage Port, succulent Sauternes, divine Rieslings, and the extremely rare Tokaji Aszu Essenzia of Hungary. Many of the wines come in an attractive half-bottle format.

ROCK & HAMMER RARITIES: PINOT NOIR LOT

With five NBA championship victories as Head Coach of the San Antonio Spurs and the most wins by an NBA coach ever, Gregg Popovich knows that putting in the daily work is essential to long-term success.

That’s the story behind Rock & Hammer Pinot Noir, the wine created by Coach Popovich and Rex Hill Winery, one of the pioneers of Oregon Pinot. Growing Pinot Noir is exceptionally difficult. Making wine from this fastidious grape requires intense dedication. A lover and collector of fine wine, Coach Popovich has worked with the Rex Hill Winery since 2005 to fashion the very best expression that Oregon can produce.

With this lot, you’ll receive every vintage produced by Rock & Hammer, beginning with their very first from 2005. These wines have never been available commercially, having been offered solely as part of Coach Popovich’s charitable endeavors. To our knowledge, a complete collection of these wines has never been offered — until now. In fact, this lot is so rare that it warranted a scoop on ESPN.com from sportswriter Baxter Holmes.

INCLUDES:

• Rock & Hammer Pinot Noir: 2005-2017, 2019 (several signed by Gregg Popovich)

• Four seats to a San Antonio Spurs game from Coach Popovich’s allocation, on a mutually agreed date

IMPENSATA WINE DINNER IN YOUR HOME

Bring Napa to your next dinner party! Win this lot to host an intimate dinner in your home, featuring wines from Impensata and a menu sourced from acclaimed Kansas City gem Stock Hill. All you have to do is open the door when your guests arrive.

ABOUT IMPENSATA

Mike Laipple, Managing Partner of Impensata will fly into Kansas City to pour wines for a very special dinner, including the Ciminelli Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Ecotone Vineyard Merlot, and Las Posadas & Engelhard Vineyard Proprietary Red wines. Mike will also bring along a surprise wine from his own personal cellar. The winning bidder will receive automatic inclusion on the allocation lists for all future wine releases. Impensata is a family-inspired project with two estate vineyards: the historic Engelhard Vineyard in the western hills of Calistoga and the Ciminelli Vineyard maturing at the summit of Howell Mountain, a project most thought not possible to achieve. In addition to the estate vineyards, Impensata is privileged to source from two legendary vineyards on Howell Mountain: Ecotone (formerly known as Thorevilos) and David Abreu’s Las Posadas.

The vision for Impensata started the way it continues today — around a table laden with wine and brimming with conversation. With a shared passion for Tuscan winemaking. With a daring spirit to build something new.
