SIMMENTALS

BULL SALE It has been a trying year in the cattle business, in Nebraska, with the driest summer I can remember. The grass we had was dry and brown, and with some CRP to graze, we made it through the summer without any extra feed. Without creep feed, the bulls were a little small at weaning, but have done well since. The American Simmental Association and the Red Angus Association joined together to do their EPDs and are on a common base. There is an explanation on the next page of the catalog with the old base (spring 2012) and the new base (fall 2013). These bulls have been selected with the focus on calving ease, growth and disposition. If you would like to discuss any of the data on the bull, feel free to call. Also, if you would like to see the bulls or their dams, I would be happy to show them to you. The bulls are fully guaranteed the first breeding season. Explanation Of ASA’s New EPD Evaluations Presenting Fall 2012 EPDs on a NEW BASE: The Fall 2012 ASA Genetic Evaluation marks the first time major breeds have expressed their EPDs on a common base (i.e., the same scale). The common base was a natural evaluation of the RAAA/ASA genetic evaluation partnership. Though forming a common base will initially lead to some confusion, the boards of both organizations unanimously agreed that it was a positive step for the beef industry - a step that allows producers to directly compare genetic predictions from the largest multi-breed database in the world.

SIMMENTALS

BULL SALE Thank you for your interest in our program. Good news is calf prices are, historically, pretty high. Bad news is that costs are going up as well. We feel we have a set of bulls to help you maximize your returns at the sale barn. The 22 ET bulls on the sale are one way to offer you the best quality genetics we have.

As with any progress, there is a change. Breeders and commercial producers will need to adjust to the new base. Much like converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius, it may be a struggle at first, however, over time we will all grow accustomed to the new scale. For example, look at the average EPDs of purebreds shown in the table below.

With our grass situation last year, the bulls come off pasture lighter than normal. We didn’t over react and kept them on a growing ration that limited them to 3.02# a day. Even though we kept the bulls pretty green, they still ultrasound with one of the best IMF averages that you will find at a Simmental sale this year, 4.41%. IMF scores on bulls in the high 3’s will keep your calves grading at your current % choice. IMF scores in the 4’s will help increase the % choice in your calves. IMF scores in the 5’s are very rare and may considerably increase your % choice and we have 5 of those breed changers to pick from.

The changes to the base does not change the evaluation of animals; it just changes the magnitude of the EPD. It has the same impact on all animals. Be sure to use the new percentile tables to develop a “feel” for the new EPD base.

Suggested Guidelines For Using Yearling Bulls.... We are firm believers in the use of yearling bulls and feel it is one of the best years of their lives. It is a time when they are easy to manage and their only concern is breeding cows. We have found that yearling bulls that are managed carefully, during the second year of their lives, not only do well, but they will perform better over time. Below are some suggested guidelines for the care of yearling bulls. Upon delivery to your ranch, keep yearling bulls separate from older bulls and feed them a maintenance ration of 5-8 pounds per head of grain and free choice hay. Reduce the amount of grain fed gradually, so that bulls are on straight hay or grass 2-4 weeks prior to the breeding season.

His receipt cow, last year, wasn’t much and I knew genetically that this is a good bull, so we saved him for this year. Now he looks REAL good. Almost an 18 REA with a lot of stretch and power.

Where possible, try to limit the bulls to 45-60 days of pasture service the first year. At this time or as soon as possible, remove the bulls and put them in separate pastures with plenty of good quality grass. It is best to feed yearling bulls separate from older bulls until after their second breeding season. This allows them to achieve the growth and strength to compete with older bulls for feed and space. You will see the benefit of a little added cost and care of feeding a yearling bull by probably two or three years of service from a well managed and healthy bull.
