Doniphan County Resident Northeast Kansas Enterprise Facilitator Meet Teresa McAnerney, a Wathena resident that serves as the Northeast Kansas Enterprise Facilitator for The Northeast Kansas Enterprise Facilitation (NEKEF). The NEKEF is a nonprofit organization which offers free and confidential business coaching in Northeast Kansas. They are a group of over sixty volunteers from five counties who care passionately about the success and sustainability of our rural Northeast Kansas region. The Facilitation Board was formed in order to assist our rural entrepreneurs in creating or maintaining their small business ventures. Each member of the Northeast Kansas Enterprise Facilitation Board understands his or her role and duties because each has received board training, prior to joining the Board. A select number of the initial board also received more intensive training to further assist in project implementation. This training included how to effectively work with entrepreneurs, how to create an entrepreneurial environment, how to leverage various resources for entrepreneurs and how to properly support the Enterprise Facilitator. As time goes on, the board continues to recruit and train new members. The NEKEF Board usually meets once a month. During the meetings, the Facilitator will ask the board for assistance with specific issues facing clients. The Board spends an hour brainstorming resources and possibilities so that each issue can be successfully resolved by the client. The board also monitors the progress of the project through monthly reports from the Facilitator on client activities, including the number of new or expanded businesses, and new or retained jobs. Once a year the Board conducts random client surveys to assess the project. If you are thinking of starting a business, need assistance or want to just learn more about NEKEF, call Teresa at (785) 364-0583, or email tm@nekef.org

Libraries Aren’t Just Books Anymore Doniphan County Library District #1 has made great progress in the last few years. Big things have happened in the last 37 years since a small group of ladies belonging to SLK (Seekers of Light and Knowledge) had a dream. In 1974 these ladies began to work at establishing a public library for everyone in Doniphan County. The issue went to a vote and passed officially in 1975. Since that time, the library has been growing and striving to meet the needs of the people of Doniphan County by not only providing a wide selection of books, but other materials as well. Visit their website at www.librarydistrict1.org to look at all of the resources and services offered. In order to make some much needed improvements, the Library Board is asking for help with the Doniphan County Library District #1 Central Library Improvement Project. Your tax dollars are used for the everyday cost of running the Library but aren't sufficient enough to pay for renovation projects without raising taxes. The Library Board is not willing to raise your taxes to acquire this money. The projected Goals are as follows: Phase 1: $200,00 by January 1, 2012 -New children’s room with heating/cooling and ADA family restroom, fire safety systems and exits. Phase 2: $100,000 by March 1, 2012-Adult and genealogy area, storage room and back exit hall, front lobby, fiction room, director’s office, improved restroom. Phase 3: $200,000Public meeting rooms, kitchenette, staff workroom, HVAC front of building, entrances and vestibule, doors/ windows and remaining MEP improvements. The Library appreciates donations of all amounts. Your donation can be given directly to the

Library District #1 Doniphan County or you may call 785-985-2597 for more information. All donations are tax deductible and a receipt is available upon request.
