The Northeast Kansas Entrepreneurship Academy was held June 22-25, 2015. The Academy provides high school students with an opportunity to explore starting and managing a business, attend presentations by experts and take tours allowing them to interact with area businesses and community leaders. The week culminates with a business plan competition, over $1,000 was awarded. “One highlight of the week included the opportunity to attend presentations at the Kauffman Foundation for Entrepreneurship” says Teresa McAnerney, NEKEF Facilitator, “we are pleased to offer local high school students this opportunity to further develop their leaderAbove l-r: Lexi Schwalm, Peyton Newby, Haylie Meyer, ship, business management and networking skills with Dillon Thompson, Zach Grier and Phillip Simmonds like-minded peers. Students who attended include: Phillip Simmonds, Doniphan West High School in Doniphan County; Haylie Meyer, RJ Meyer Homeschool in Nemaha County; Dillon Thompson, Lexi Schwalm, Zachary Grier and Peyton Newby all of Hiawatha High School, Brown County.

A Kansas City tour introduced the students to The Kauffman Foundation for Entrepreneurship where they attended One Million Cups. While at the Kauffman they also attended interactive presentations led by Nathan Kurtz, Senior Program Director in Entrepreneurship, Nancie Thomas, Senior Program Officer and Manager of Higher Education and Rachel Carlton, Senior Program Officer for Entrepreneurship.

Certified Gallup Strengths Finder Coach, Dr. Heather Seitz, met with the students to evaluate the results of their individual Strengths Finder surveys. Each student filled out an online test earlier in the week to determine their top five strengths. Dr. Seitz provided navigational tools to help them maximize effectiveness in leadership and team building as well as business and personal relationships through using their specific strengths. “I was impressed with these students, they are serious and came to learn!” commented Dr. Seitz who is a professor at Johnson County Community College.
