Meet 19 Successful Women Meet 19 Successful Store Owners onWomen the East Store Owners — East Danforth Danforth. The East Danforth is an exciting place to shop, eat and stroll. The DANNY BIA and DECA are working together to make the area fun again. Studies have shown that for every dollar spent supporting a local independent, 48 cents stay in the community versus 13 cents of every dollar spent at chains. Shopping local builds community. Meet 19 women owners, running their own shops to serve East Danforth. These are great women who work hard to earn your support. There is a showcase of Batifole; a favoured French restaurant, Studio We; a clothing favourite for women and men, and North American Award winning stylist and colourist, Adriana Balea, opening Studio B Hair Salon on Danforth & Carlaw.

hat does community mean to you? I believe a community is a collection of people sharing a common concern. People who care about safety and belonging. People who interact in a holistic, energizing way. I hope this article will encourage you to realize your inner visionary, become a partner in decision-making and volunteer in community building. The first time I visited Greenwood Park was in the winter of 1998. My family arrived for an after-school skate. There was access to water, seating, bathrooms and shelter, but it was clear that Greenwood Park was somewhat neglected and undervalued. The entrance and locker area were unwelcoming because of cussing loiterers, nobody appeared to be in charge and there were no other young families to be seen. 8 Neighbourhood Living EAST SIDE

We couldn’t find an ice schedule posting, but the ice rink was clearly devoted to an unorganized shinny game when we arrived and therefore unsafe for a pleasure skate. Sadly, because of our first impression, we rarely returned to that park rink. Five years ago, I learned a group of neighbours were working towards improving Greenwood Park–hoping to bring it back to a more family-oriented and kid-friendly environment. I was invited to their FROG meeting that week. Bring some ideas! Seven neighbours met at a local restaurant with Park staff, a landscape architect, a city planner and our City Councillor. I thought we were going to discuss ways to curtail vandalism and clean up litter but The CJM on Flickr

what was in the works was an entire new playground concept. A community park wish list was presented to the Parks department heads, a frank discussion about the limited budget unfolded, a playground visionary think tank was initiated and just like that I was turned into a FROG: A Friend Of Greenwood Park. In an effort to promote the Park improvement, FROG members and maintenance staff agreed to a second annual Fall FROG gathering. FROG did not have a bank account, but we recognized how important it was for us to be organized and professional, if we hoped to attract more volunteers. Our plan was to keep the event simple but busy. The fire department could bring a truck and so could the police. Kiril Strax on Flickr

“the fun of running my own business” #1

Hi! I am Michelle and Sauce is my baby. I have been an East Ender for 20 years; Gerrard and Greenwood. I love this neighbourhood. My neighbours are friendly, the houses are still affordable and you have access to the entire city. I opened Sauce three years ago. Our focus was the neighbourhood, introducing people, building relationships - an adult play centre. People that didn’t know each other are now friends. Staff policy is to get the person’s name and use it – makes it easier to get to know everyone. I like the fun of running my own business – being my own boss. There are days when it’s frustrating but also the chaos of it and the freedom to be creative. When you purchase a franchise you have to do it their way. I have the freedom to bring my personality into the business and the satisfaction of seeing it work. A bad day is a good day because it is for myself. When you visit Sauce, you can look forward to a good craft beer, good food and a friendly atmosphere. See you soon!

“a space where city time slows down”

Hi!

I am Yuri. I am a Naturopathic Doctor and have been living with my family in the area for 10 years. We opened Yuri’s Village 5-1/2 years ago. We have 9 therapists specializing in different modalities, from Naturopathic medicine, birth supports, art therapy, reflexology, energy healing, Jungian and addiction counseling, (also we have yoga, Tai Chi, and Chi-Gong classes). I like that the Danny has mostly small businesses that support each other and work together. I enjoy giving care to people, helping them get better. Visiting Yuri’s Village is a chance for you to enter a space where city time slows down and you have a chance to focus on your healing journey. I look forward to seeing you.

“vintage begins with an appreciation for quality and craftsmanship” #4

Hi!

My name is Maggie. I’m the newest arrival to the Danny with my shop The Handwork Department; only open since July. I am a jewellery artist with a passion for vintage goods and have been creating unique origami jewellery under the name Neogami Origami Jewellery since 2007, with products being sold in shops all over Toronto. With the help of DECA, I tested the waters with a pop-up shop and the response was fantastic. Since then I have opened our permanent location and added more vintage electronics, furniture, and housewares as well as clothing, hundreds of records sorted by genre, handmade soaps, jewellery and toys. The love of vintage begins with an appreciation for quality and craftsmanship which is missing in many of today’s mass produced items. At The Handwork Department you will find quality vintage pieces arranged right along next to locally crafted goods. It is such a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the big change that’s happening along the Danforth with new small businesses opening all the time, the diversity of the area finally gets to shine.

“sharing family roots with the neighbourhood

Hi!

I am Yolanda Paez Villegas. I was born in the north of Mexico in the indigenous Yaqui Culture. I studied at UNAM & SOGEM Mexico City. With my family I have been running El Sol since 1991. My passion is pre-hispanic tradition, culture and gastronomy and to introduce this style of Mexican food and culture in my little art museum and restaurant. We have developed a neighbourhood following that appreciates this authentic northern Mexican cuisine. El Sol is a family restaurant where kids are welcome to have fun learning about the culture and the food. Singers can rehearse on my baby grand piano. Painters can exhibit their art and designs. Running El Sol has been an opportunity to share my family roots with the neighbourhood. The best reason to visit is the authentic great tasting food. El Sol is a very unique experience to come back to again and again. I look forward to seeing you.

“once you taste - you are mine”

Hi!

You can call me Banchi. I am very proud to have run Rendezvous since 2001. I grew up in a big family of 7 children. Feeding a family of that size is like running a minirestaurant. Being the first Ethiopian restaurant in the neighbourhood was a challenge as people weren’t use to eating this kind of food. But once they taste, they are mine. My greatest passion is seeing clients walk out feeling satisfied by my food. I admire the neighbourhood people and their different cultures. The best reason to visit me is to enjoy the unique experience of authentic Ethiopian food. Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, be sure to try our coffee ceremony.

“raised in a family with an entrepreneurial spirit” #7

Hi!

I’m Olga Kiriakou. I grew up in East York and raised my family here. My passion is my family and balancing work and home life is my greatest challenge. I want to be the very best in every facet of my life, both at home and at work. A very dear friend helped me realize that if I strive for “Very good,” as a standard and not “Perfect” I will be way better off. So, that’s what I do. I was raised in a family with a strong entrepreneurial spirit-work hard, value the people who support you, and be proud of what you do- this is what we were taught. Owning Jawny Bakers Restaurant has been an incredible journey and knowing that we are such an integral part of our community motivates me. I love that this neighbourhood is so diverse and is continually evolving. We live amongst so many people that are actively and passionately involved in improving the community for all its residents and business owners. It would be nice to see more businesses consider East York for their new ventures. You must visit Jawny Bakers and bring your family. You will eat great food, enjoy great service and have a greattime!

“people come from miles around”

#8

Hi! My name is Lucie and I have been running North Pole Bakery since 1974. I like to socialize and get to know my customers. I treat everybody as a friend. Its not my nature to act strange to anybody. My customers tell me stories and I get to know what is going on outside my store. The community has changed a lot, more diversity. I believe the way I treat people reflects back to me. Other stores have problems with school kids but I treat them nice, how can they be bad back. When you visit my store, you will find everything you could expect from an Italian Bakery. It’s all hand made with the freshest ingredients. People come from miles around for my cannoli and specialty cakes. Come on by!

“by continuously offering great value we grew”

Hi!

I am Melanie Ferreira. My family and I have lived in the area since 2000 and we opened Melanies Bistro in 2008. When we opened it was a challenge to build a following, but by continuously offering great value we grew. There is a lot gotten from the exchange I have with my clients. They have been very kind and gratious. I like the neighbourhood because the businesses talk with and support each other. We can walk down the street and say hello to people we know. The best reason to visit Melanie’s is the outstanding food resulting from the use of quality ingredients and good techniques, well mastered. Our menu offers enough diversity to accommodate most tastes.

Batifole:

French Delight in the heart of Riverdale!

By Tracey Coveart

26 Neighbourhood Living EAST SIDE

T

hriving inconspicuously on a quiet stretch of Gerrard Street between Little India and Chinatown East is a delightful swatch of France. With its deliciously traditional Gallic cuisine and impeccable but unobtrusive service,

Batifole Restaurant is the closest thing to an intimate Provençale bistro that you will find in the city, both in terms of menu and atmosphere. Batifole is a popular dinner destination for Leslieville and Riverdale residents and anyone who ventures through the door – including food critics aplenty –

thanks to the passionate dedication of owner and chef Pascal Geffroy, who has carefully curated a rare authenticity and ambience in his restaurant. With the food, it’s about the subtleties of taste and staying true to his roots. “We provide real French flavour,” says Pascal, who was classically trained in some of the

Neighbourhood Living EAST SIDE 27

“When you are the cook, your food is your signature. I have to be here all the time to make sure that the food remains consistent.”

28 Neighbourhood Living EAST SIDE

best restaurants in France before moving to Canada in 2006. “The presentation may be new, but the base is classic French cooking. You can’t lie to people – tell them it’s one thing and give them another. I like to interpret, but if your are going to consistently deliver the correct flavour you have to respect the recipe.” And you have to pay homage to your meat, fish and poultry. Canadians, he says, tend to over-flavour their dishes. “If you overpower what you’re cooking you can’t tell what you’re tasting. When you cook lamb, you need to taste the lamb. That flavour has to sit on top. Anything else is a complement.” Pascal, 46, has had more than three decades to hone his culinary skills. He started as an apprentice at 14 in the dining room of an upscale hotel in Provence, but quickly moved into the kitchen, where he found things infinitely more interesting. He soon progressed to

sous chef and, after two years, moved on to a hotel in Nyons. He built his reputation there for eight years, then opened his own restaurant, La Croisee Des Chemins, while operating a French patisserie – another of his passions – for two of those years. After starting a new life in Toronto, Pascal worked as a chef at Didier (St. Clair and Yonge), then Batifole for four years under its previous owner and Papillon on Front Street for two. In the summer of 2013, Batifole came on the market and Pascal jumped at the chance to once again own his own establishment. He takes a very hands on approach at Batifole. “For me it’s the principle,” he says. “When you are the cook, your food is your signature. I have to be here all the time to make sure that the food remains consistent.” There are no ‘signature’ dishes at Batifole, but everything that comes out

Neighbourhood Living EAST SIDE 29

of the kitchen is 100 per cent Pascal – and 100 per cent Pascal approved. “I love everything on the menu because I cook what I like and I like to eat what I cook. If I made something I didn’t like, how would I know if it was good?” House favourites for fall include Duck Confit with Butternut Squash and Onion Compote; Deep fried Croquettes served with almond cream and peaches; smoked salmon – made in-house – served with fresh sour cream; Lobster Jelly with vegetables; and John Dory with Sorrel and Mushroom Sauce. Prices are modest. Appetizers – like Escargot Fricasee and the “triumphant” (Joanne Kates, The Globe and Mail) Crab and Rockfish Soup with Garlic Aoli – are $11, sides

30 Neighbourhood Living EAST SIDE

are $6, mains are $24, and desserts, also made on the premises by Pascal, are $8.50. The menu changes seasonally – according to what is fresh – and daily. “I have very good customers who come back often so I need to change the dishes regularly,” says Pascal. “If I see some nice mussels at the market, I’ll make something with them. I take my inspiration from what is available and build my dishes around what I find.” The wine list, too, carries Pascal’s personal touch. “I like to bring in wines that people have never tried before and give them a chance to discover something new. Most are from the Rhone Region because that’s were I’m from and I know a lot of the vineyards there.”

For Pascal, the restaurant business is a bit of a family affair that skipped a generation. “My grandma has a cafe in Brittany – the Cafe du Centre – and she is a great cook. I think it’s in my genes.” So is the desire to make the business of food pleasurable, both for his himself and his customers. “More than 30 years later, I still love to cook. It’s not just a job. When I stop taking pleasure in what I do, it will be time to do something else.” For his customers, “I like bringing pleasure to the people who come to my restaurant. It’s as if I am inviting them into my home. They are not just my customers. They are my guests.”

Pascal has modelled his restaurant after the cafes of his childhood. “In Marseilles, you find a little cafe on the corner of every street. People congregate there because it makes them feel good. The food is good, the ambience is good. It feels like coming home and it keeps you coming back.” That is the vibe at Batifole, Pascal’s casual, yet classic French bistro. “People feel welcome when they come here. There is no tablecloth; no linen napkins. I keep things very simple because I want people to feel comfortable. This is their neighbourhood and they want to feel comfortable in their neighbourhood.” Everyone at Batifole exudes warmth and

Neighbourhood Living EAST SIDE 31

hospitality. Pascal’s staff have been with him for years and he believes that consistency is the key to great service. “I believe in building a strong team. My staff know our customers and our customers know the people who are serving them. They have a relationship that goes beyond a credit card. They know what wine you like, what food you like.” It is classic food, with classic service. “We don’t pretend to be more than we are,” says Pascal, “but we always give people more than they expect.” Being a chef – owning his own restaurant – is what Pascal was born to do. “The thing I love most about Batifole is that here, I have the freedom to make my own decisions and to treat people the way I think they should be treated. I make the food I love. I do what I believe.” Pascal will always be a restaurateur, but now that he is approaching 50 he is becoming more interested in passing on what he knows to the next generation of chefs. In the near future, he plans to open a bakery in Batifole and run cooking classes out of the kitchen, but his dream is to open a French culinary school. “I know French food. I want to train others to cook in the traditional French way.” One of the things he will be sure to teach is his basic philosophy about cooking. “It’s very simple. “life is too short for cheap wine”

Hi!

#10

My name is Carmen. I have lived in the hood my whole life. I spent my summers at Monarch Park pool and shopped on Danforth Avenue with my Mom every Saturday. I would walk down Greenwood Avenue to Danforth and all the way to Shoppers World at Victoria Park. Great memories; my first Italian leather shoes, prom dress, christening gown, all the best produce, bakery goods and fresh meats were to be had as we made our way across Danforth. My late husband and I started Royal Beef in 1985. We both worked for Dominion Stores (now known as Metro) when one Christmas he came home with a pink slip, he was going to be laid off. Paul had always wanted to start his own butcher shop, and I told him this was the perfect opportunity. Take the lemons and make lemonade. Owning your own business has many challenges. Trying to be a Mom, a Wife, and a business partner is a balancing act. The best advice I ever received was from my lovely daughter, Bridgette; “Mom- life is too short for cheap wine”- so every once in a while I remember to spoil myself. Thanks Bridgie. This neighbourhood is going through a growing spurt with all the young families and new shops opening up. I love our Farmers Market and our pop up shops and music in the park. If you don’t know what to have for dinner - we can inspire you. Our beef, lamb, chicken and pork, is sourced locally and raised without hormones or antibiotics. Drop by and visit. Thank you.

“have a health inspected industrial kitchen for those who do a lot of baking”

Hi!

I’m Noel Yim. I have been open at this location for five years. I like the neighbourhood as there are lots of families; it’s nice and quiet. I am planning to move into the area. I was a pastry chef before but my passion for baking and decorating in the food business led me to open this shop to help others with their baking. Besides selling supplies and providing pastry and cake decorating classes, I have an industrial kitchen (health inspected) for those who want to do a lot of baking or want to establish a food business. The best reason to visit is my range of baking supplies.

“independent businesses are more creative and imaginative” #12

Hi!

I am Shamie and I am Tracey. We have lived here since 2006 and we’re East Enders. We opened our store because we wanted to be part of the community, to make connections, to become a community hub; a play area for kids. Our business turned four September 24. 20 years experience in specialty toy retail has helped in dealing with major challenges, figuring out the internet integration and setting up competitive pricing, The Independent Business sector is more creative and imaginative with product choices. If a toy can be played in many different ways it impacts a child’s creativity. Tracey had specific training for new baby products. What we sell makes a difference. We like that the neighbourhood is really down to earth and everybody wants it to succeed. The best reason to visit us is for the experience. We are a fun place, with classes, special events and a large selection to choose from.

“I love watching kids get their first bike”

Hi!

I am Christina. My partner and I started Cyclepath in September, 1988. I like the diversity of this neighbourhood and the large number of families moving into the area. In the past five years, sales of kids bikes have quadrupled. My passion is my customers; watching them grow. Our place is a neighbourhood talk spot with no coffee. We hire from the neighbourhood-kids that started shopping here. Cyclepath is a full stop bike shop; first or fast bike-we have it all; guarantees; unlimited two year warranty; we stock canadian content as much as possible; and our half back program. I love watching kids get their first bike. It’s such a great experience! Sign up your kid today.

“always great conversation in my store”

#14

Hi!

You can call me Nicki. My family has lived in this area since 1986 and I have been running Ages & Stages for 18 years this past September. I like meeting people, getting to know them and discussing our lives. I love this community and the fact that people know me. There is always great conversation in my store. I like helping parents find things they need. Its great to see people first come in as a baby and now they are a young person. I always try to go the extra mile for my clients, this is more than a job. I know if they are happy, they’ll come back. When it gets difficult I reach out to other people. As I got more experienced I knew most issues get resolved. Most of the time you just have to step back and review your options. I like what’s happening to The Danny these days. There is lots of new business ideas, great groups and the Fairies on the Danforth was a great promotion. DECA has been great. The best reason to visit me is because my store has an eclectic mix of stock to fit your children up to tween and teen. I have dancewear, toys, school uniforms, great books; everything you might need and you can recycle all your baby stuff.

Hi! We’re Moxie and Jane. We are long time residents and pretty busy raising our families. Merrily, merrily started 3 years ago as an online shop then with DECA’s help became a pop up. Both of us have marketing backgrounds and this business exercises our Dzcollective braindz. We met at an ad agency 14 years ago. Our approach is labour intensive. We sku every item for the website. We love handmade items and educating our clients on their value. 20 artisans have their product in our stores and we sell consignment for 330 families. We have 13,000 items. We love that the community was extremely receptive to what we are offering; their desire to shop local. If you see kids here that is our families helping out. The best reason to visit us is to support the environment and your growing family. Your kids grow fast and their clothing needs change just as fast. We supply unique pieces, support local families and artisans and have a great time doing this. Come and visit!

A lesson in dressing at Studio WE! By Tracey Coveart

G

arments have an intriguing way of speaking to Wilson Li, owner of ‘Studio WE!’ fashion boutique in Leslieville on Queen Street East. “I see the potential in a piece of clothing,” says Wilson “not just the piece of clothing itself.” Which has him literally turning fashion on its head. “I’m always thinking of different ways to wear things and having fun with the pieces I bring in to the store.” When Wilson explores a new line, he looks for something unusual in the cut, colour and texture of the fabric – and for ways he can manipulate the pieces on the rack to make them unique for his clients. Sometimes he makes subtle alterations to the pieces when they arrive: taking off some of the details if they’re over-embellished; changing or removing the buttons; or even altering the length. Unless they ask him, his clients never know what ‘Wilson touches’ have been applied. Wilson is more than happy, however, to show his customers the different ways in which to purpose a single garment. “I’ll tie something differently or put it on the mannequin backwards or upside down!” At Studio WE! things are not always what they seem. What looks like a one-piece, might actually be two or three of the same skirt in different sizes, cleverly assembled. What appears to be a skirt could be an ingeniously wrapped infinity scarf. “There are many ways to wear things,” he says. For Wilson, fashion is about having fun; about being creative and pushing boundaries; about letting go of self-consciousness; about confidence. It’s not the clothes that are unique, but how his customers wear them and how they feel when they are in – and out of – them. “When I help customers find something they fall in love with, that is rewarding,” says Wilson. He remembers one client that he fit in a dress for her wedding anniversary candlelight dinner. “She felt so

sexy.” After the occasion she came back to the store and told Wilson that her husband had been so impressed he had whispered that he couldn’t wait for her to take the dress off. “That was the best compliment I could ever hope to receive!” Wilson was born in Hong Kong and came to Canada as a foreign student. He graduated from the Ontario College of Arts in fine art, then continued his studies in graphic design and silk-screen printing at George Brown College and computer graphics at Sheridan

Neighbourhood Living EAST SIDE 47

College before returning home eight years later. At 35, Wilson was back in Canada, this time on the west coast, working retail in Vancouver before moving to Toronto and taking a job in a home furnishing store on the Danforth. He was there for seven years, and was searching for a new opportunity, when the Queen Street East storefront became available. “I never wanted my own company. I grew up in a family business environment, working part time as a youth at my parents’ shop,” Wilson recalls. “I was rarely off on the weekend or during holiday seasons. Working for someone else – with

48 Neighbourhood Living EAST SIDE

my weekends free – was always a career preference.” But something about that vacant retail space was calling to him. Three days later, he signed the lease and opened Studio WE! with a business partner in 2006. At first, the store focused exclusively on custom-made furniture and home décor accessories, but when his business partner left after the first year, Wilson started to bring in women’s clothing. Two years later, after many requests from his customers, he cleared a corner for menswear. Then, when a small gallery space opened up down the street, he

experimented with ME! Studio, a second store exclusively for men. The two stores operated for six years, then consolidated in 2013. Now, Studio WE! Caters to both women’s and men’s fashion apparel and accessories. And Wilson, who once eschewed having his own business has no regrets. “I guess being self employed is in my blood, it’s part of who I am,” he says. “If its time to change up or move on, I would.” With a style that is anchored in the classics of the ‘50s and ‘60s, and an eye for clothing that fits and flatters the body,

Wilson carries the kind of cut and quality that will last a lifetime if it treated well. He buys smaller label exclusively, mostly European lines and some locally designed and made in Canada. While fashion accessories – shoes, hats, handbags and jewelry – are a little more plentiful, Wilson orders only one size of each garment he brings into the store. When it’s gone, it’s gone. Some special pieces – like cocktail party dresses and evening gowns – are singles only. If he sees it and it feels right – if he falls in love with it – he buys it. If it sells, it was meant to be. If it doesn’t, it becomes part of his collection.

Neighbourhood Living EAST SIDE 49

50 Neighbourhood Living EAST SIDE

And a passionately curated collection it is. “I adore every piece in my store,” says Wilson. He expects nothing less of his customers. His prices are affordable – tops range from $50 to $100, dresses from $70 to $200 (more for the exclusive gowns) – but don’t expect any sales. Clothes are priced reasonably according to their value.“ If someone truly falls in love with a piece, I will help them out. I appreciate people who appreciate my clothing.” Wilson dresses a growing number of regular clients – men and women – celebrities, professionals and neighbourhood moms and dads. “People come in looking for an outfit and I can almost always find them something that’s going to be a hit.” But he is blunt. “If I don’t like it on you, I don’t want to sell it to you. And I won’t sell you what you don’t need.” His customers value that directness. They trust his taste and value his opinion. “Shopping has to be fun and wearing clothes should be joyful.” His advice? “Don’t be afraid to try new things, don’t worry too much about what other people think and don’t worry about size. As long as you look good, it doesn’t matter if it’s a 4 or a 14.” At Studio WE! Wilson operated on the ‘be yourself ’ philosophy, because he would never want to be anything else. “I am here to support who you are and what you like,” he says. “Shopping for clothing is an exchange. I learn something from you and you learn something from me, and in the end we both walk away feeling more beautiful.”

“a space to recharge or reconnect to your self “

Hi!

I am Isabelle Bouchard. I opened Ankh Yoga two years ago this past November. I chose the East End because of the quieter pace. It is not as congested as the downtown and after eight everything is quiet in the neighbourhoods. I like the learning curve of being a studio owner, having people feel comfortable and establishing rapport with my students. It challenges me to stay creative, adapting and making connections with people. Businesses in the neighbourhood have been welcoming and are very supportive. I hope you visit Ankh Yoga. It is a quiet place to find some quiet space to recharge or reconnect to your self. It can be different for everyone; for some its a place to socialize.

The Perfect Balance: Connect and Let Go

In

a downward dog world where everyone tries to differentiate themselves in order to stand out and be “the” one, ANKH YOGA’s philosophy is “one”. Ankh Yoga is a place where everyone is welcome and they can easily find something that feels familiar or

like home when they enter this intimate little studio. Meeting our teachers feels like seeing an old friend. Taking a class alongside other students, who happen to be someone who lives around the corner from you but maybe you never see creates a deeper connection to yourself

that you’ve missed so very much. That’s special. Isabelle Bouchard is the owner of ANKH YOGA and a Certified Kundalini Yoga Teacher. Her passion for life is what brought her to yoga years ago when she took her first class at the West End YMCA. When the physical demands of her hairstyling career started to hinder her energy levels and hectic lifestyle, Isabelle started doing Kundalini Yoga and was immediately hooked. It improved her health and it also opened her up to “listening” to what was inside. Her dreams, talents and her love for living life everyday as though it was her last is how she unexpectedly and perfectly opened up a studio on Danforth East. Isabelle, a natural singer, songwriter, artist and event planner, followed her heart when she started a family and moved to east Toronto. Being from a small northeastern Ontario town of 1500 people, the sense of community here was so familiar and felt so right. The only thing missing was a place she could be with others to practice Kundalini yoga. Completely appreciating all of the schools of yoga, it was truly important to offer a space where anyone who practices or wishes to try yoga, despite the style, could find that here. An intimate setting and size, ANKH YOGA is an open concept studio with one large space called the Life Room which enters at ground level. The feeling of tradition is subtle within this comfortable space. With up to fifteen people, this is a place to take a break from daily demands and commitments. A community hub where, without any pressure, one may find or meet someone that is there just at the right time. And for those being called by an unexplainable force, the need to dive a bit deeper into the self is most certainly encouraged. It would be easy to call this studio as a

place for well being. As guru Yogi Bhajan, says “We are human beings, not humans doing”. We spend so much of our time doing tasks, rushing to work and so on, that we often miss the moments to simply be. When you come to ANKH YOGA you can be - You! With some new complimentary offerings to our existing schedule which started this past fall, you can choose from creative and authentic styles, such as prenatal, Baby & Me, Family yoga, classes for those looking to increase strength, overall flexibility and include meditation to a stress reducing regiment. Studio B Hair Salon

Adriana Balea

This dream took fifteen years to land on Danforth & Carlaw In 1996 Adriana Balea was working full time as a hairdresser and teaching in her own hair dressing school in Romania when the rest of her family moved to Canada. In 2001 she sold everything to follow her loved ones here. With no English skills, Adriana was forced to start at the bottom and work her way up. She landed a job at a high end Bloor Street West salon one week after arriving in Toronto. Seven months later, when she’d memorized enough words to carry a conversation, the owner took her on as his personal assistant. Adriana was a natural. Quickly moving up the ranks from junior to senior stylist/colourist, she was nominated for four prestigious awards in 2006 and landed two: Ontario Hairdresser of the Year and Canadian Colourist of the Year. In 2007 and 2008 she won backto-back North American Colourist of the Year awards. When Adriana and her husband Miki saw the space at 563 Danforth Ave, she knew it was time to make her dream of having her own salon a reality. Adriana has a passion to create for her clients, to transform the way they see themselves. She is driven by her clients appreciation to seek out the latest styles and techniques. “I love what I do. It’s not a job but a passion. I love the challenge. The transformations,” says Adriana, an honest professional who would rather turn people away than damage their hair. “The most wonderful thing is when a client jumps on my neck and says, ‘I love you. You’re the best.’ I will never take that for granted.” 64 Neighbourhood Living EAST SIDE

When AniZet Designs was launched in 2014, business partners Christine Tatilon and Marc Reppin knew throw pillows were a must for their home decor line. “Pillows are just such a natural fit for Christine’s designs,” says Reppin. “Her images, like the pirates and circus animals, are bold, bright and playful, and they instantly add fun to a bedroom or playroom. The Under the Sea pillow set meanwhile, with their double-sided design, acts as a decorative item and as a mix-and-match game.” What Tatilon and Reppin didn’t know was that the pillows would draw fans both young and old. “We thought these designs were for children. But during the Toronto Bastille 2015 event, one woman bought our circus elephant pillow for her boyfriend, and during the Eastside Pop-Up last month, another woman purchased our Under the Sea set for herself,” says Reppin. “We love the reaction the pillows are getting.”

With winter on its way, AniZet has been ramping up production for the holiday season. “Obviously we think our products would make great gifts, but we’re also firm believers that a colourful mini makeover – easily done by adding throw pillows to your decor – in the middle of winter can really boost your mood.” Shop AniZet Designs’ entire line on AniZet.com and look for the home decor company at local markets in 2016.
