would like to introduce and welcome Lester Vaughan who is the newly appointed Alderman of Ward 2. Mr. Vaughan was appointed as Alderman, with unanimous consent of the city council, at the March 19 city council meeting. Alderman Vaughan looks forward to serving the community. May brings about the new fiscal year for the city. The city council approved its budget for the fiscal year May 1, 2018, to April 30, 2019. The budget includes funds to continue all current core services provided by the city. The budget also includes funds for road, storm water, and other neighborhood reinvestment projects. The city did not increase its property tax or water rates as part of the budget. Copies of the budget are available on the city’s web site. The city encourages residents to support local businesses when shopping for goods and services. Through solid economic development practices and planning, the city continues to experience excellent growth among the city’s business community. We continue to benefit from high occupancy rates and a variety of new and existing businesses. A list of Darien businesses can be found on our web. 2018 Street Maintenance Program begins The mayor and city council recently approved the 2018 Street Resurfacing Program. This year’s program includes approximately 5.5 miles of roadways throughout the city. The City of Darien is anticipating that construction will be starting early May. Our goal is to improve the streets with little inconvenience to the residents. Residents living on these streets will receive flyers with information and timelines before the paving occurs. Progress information will also be available through the city’s website, darien.il.us, Direct Connect, Facebook, the cable channel or by contacting Regina at the Municipal Services Department at 630-353-8105.

2018 Concrete Replacement Program
Residents wanting to replace their private driveways (sidewalk to garage) should call Suburban Concrete directly at 847-837-8805, and inform them you are a Darien resident. Suburban Concrete will invoice you for the work. Residents wanting to replace their sidewalk, apron or depress their driveway curb should call Diane at city hall at 630-353-8102. The city will invoice you for this work. The deadline to participate in this year’s program is June 29.
City regulates fire pits The City of Darien regulates the use of fire pits to the hours of 8am to 12pm, Monday through Friday and 8am to 1am on Friday and Saturday. The city allows the burning of logs, non-treated wood or wood products. Yardwaste and treated wood may not be burned. Treated wood releases harmful chemicals into the air. Please practice fire safety and keep all fires at a safe distance from trees and all structures, including decks and fences. It is also a good idea to refrain from having fires on high ozone days.
Please don’t place brush out too early Each year the City of Darien receives numerous calls about branches left in the parkway for brush pickup. While the City of Darien chips branches for residents, if they are put out too early they look unsightly next to the road and if left on the grass could cause damage to the lawn. We ask that you keep your brush away from the street and find an area in the backyard until the next pickup. The brush may be placed at the curb the weekend prior to the pickup date. You may also drop off the brush at the Public Works Facility located at 1041 South Frontage Rd. Your help in keeping Darien “A Nice Place to Live” is greatly appreciated. DuPage County Para-Transit Program Ride DuPage sponsors and offers transportation to county senior residents who meet low-income guidelines. Travel is provided to medical appointments within DuPage County, DuPage County Health Department locations, and DuPage County Community Services at 421 N. County Farm Rd., Wheaton. Proof of eligibility must be provided and applicants must pre-register. There is a charge of $4 each way to 421 and 111 N. County Farm Rd. buildings; all other destinations are $1.50 for the first six miles, then $1.50 each additional mile. To register, seniors should call DuPage County Senior Services at 630-407-6500 or 1-800-942-9412.

Watering restrictions in place Beginning May 15 through Sept. 15 of each year the City of Darien restricts the watering of trees, gardens, lawns, shrubs, or other outdoor plants. Residents may not water between the hours of 11am and 7pm. Watering is not permitted on consecutive days, odd number addresses may water on odd numbered days and even numbered address may water on even numbered days. These restrictions do not prohibit the watering of newly planted seed or sod less than three months old. New/ replacement sprinkler systems shall be equipped with a WaterSense labeled irrigation controller and shall be in compliance with section 2.5(g) of the Illinois plumbing license law. 12

City offers wood chip delivery Wood chip delivery is available from the City of Darien. There is a delivery fee of $35 for a half load, which is approximately three cubic yards of chips, and $55 for a full load, which is approximately eight cubic yards of chips. Wood chips may be picked up at the public works facility at no charge. The wood chips are double ground and are delivered on Fridays. Please call Regina in Municipal Services at 630-353-8105 for more information or to schedule a delivery.

Congratulations to Gail Stocchero, retiring from District #61
Mrs. Stocchero was a graduate of Alma College and began working in District #61 in 1985. Prior to coming to Darien Mrs. Stocchero taught second graders for three years at the Universal American School of Kuwait. Gail began her career at Marion Hills School teaching fifth graders for one year. She continued in the district and has worked at Fairview, Lace and Mark DeLay Schools teaching first graders for the rest of her career. She has also provided experiences for students in college programs conducting student teaching opportunities for those individuals. While working for District #61 she completed numerous professional development activities including earning a Masters degree from National College of Education. We wish Ms. Stocchero well as she moves on to a new chapter of her life in retirement. Thank you for the years of service to the District #61 community.

Darien Public Schools District #61 offers developmental preschool screening to district residents to provide early interventions for children between the ages of three months through five years old that are suspected to have developmental delays or other handicapping conditions. Children are screened in five areas: vision, hearing, language development, fine and gross motor and concept development. Children identified through the screening process are referred for a full evaluation to determine eligibility and program needs. The following dates have been set for preschool screening during the 2018–19 school year: Sept. 21, 2018 Nov. 19, 2018 Jan. 18, 2019 March 15, 2019 If you have concerns regarding your child’s development, contact Mark DeLay School at 630-852-0200 to begin the screening process. Registration is required prior to the screening.
LEND action network advocates for DuPage County schools
Would you like to become more actively involved in the Legislative Education Network of DuPage? Are you a parent, educator, school board or community member? If you answered yes to these questions you can become a part of this group that serves to advocate for educational issues impacting DuPage County Schools. LEND looks at issues from all sides and seeks to work with legislators in beneficial legislation and funding. LEND is monitoring a number of issues such as the property tax freeze and the impact on education; dual credits for high school students; tax increment financing (TIF); and the new Evidence Based Funding model for public schools. On-line registration for 2018–19 opens On-line registration is under way for the 2018–2019 school year. Families that have not yet registered are asked to complete the on-line process by following the steps outlined here: 1. Enter your family login and password on Skyward. (if you need your login and password contact your child’s school) 2. Click on “Open Family Access” 3. You will see: “Start Registration for 2018–19.” Click on the box to begin the process. 16
4. Work through each step of the process and when you finish a step click the “Step has been completed” checkbox for each step. 5. When you have finished all steps click on the “Complete registration” button.

In their ongoing effort to assist those affected by cancer, the Wild Orchid Salon will be sponsoring a St. Balderick’s hairshaving fundraising event on: Sun., June 3 at: Wild Orchid Hair Salon, 7511 S. Lemont Rd., Darien. This event will be cohosted by the Darien Chamber of Women In Business. It promises to be a day of fun and celebration with local Darien celebrities participating, all for a good cause! According to the St. Balderick’s website: • More children are lost to cancer in the U.S. than any other disease, in fact, more than many other childhood diseases combined. • Before they turn 20, about 1 in 285 children in the U.S. will have cancer. • Worldwide, a child is diagnosed every 2 minutes.

Darien Historical Society works to restore historic flag Recently, members of the Darien Historical Society rediscovered a historic artefact: a Civil War era flag made by early area residents. The United States Civil War began in April, 1861. Patriotic fervor was in the air as the fourth of July approached and the young people of Cass, one of two villages that became Darien, decided they wanted an American flag for their Independence Day Parade. Shortly before the fourth, 19 year-old Elijah Bartlett volunteered to ride 20 miles into Chicago to purchase a flag. He returned emptyhanded. Undaunted, on July 3, George Heartt rode into Chicago and bought fabric to make a flag. That night, by light from kerosene lanterns, under the direction of Eliza Smart, the young women of Cass
The flag in 2007. sewed an American flag approximately 11 feet by 6 feet with 34 stars, the number of states in the Union in 1861. Time has taken a toll on the flag and members are working to restore it. Read more about the efforts in the July issue of Neighbors of Darien. 27
